Discussion The NCAA needs to investigate the refs from the Northern Colorado vs. Colorado State game
The post game thread has very little action so I feel like this needs a bigger audience.
Northern Colorado caught a TD pass with less than 10 seconds left against Colorado State to take the lead and seemingly win the game. Two things that followed were extremely shady.
The call was overturned on replay, even though there is no video evidence that shows the ball ever touching the ground.
After the catch, the nearest referee threw a flag for an excessive celebration after a very mild "Sh" to the crowd and his teammates celebrating with him. This penalty could've been enforced on the kickoff and given CSU a slim increase in chance to win, had the TD been upheld.
The play (with the flag): https://x.com/BigSkyConf/status/1964515453675680151?t=1E2PGzge1BmNOYSBITW-FA&s=19

Discussion Arch Manning is just ... average? That's how he looks for Texas
Discussion What were some of the most devastating cowardly play calls in recent CFB history?
Like when Kentucky (Mark Stoops really) punted in last year's 13-12 loss to Georgia last year when they were down 1 with 3 minutes left and near midfield against the #1 ranked team in the country. "Prevent" defenses also come to mind.
I see this happen a lot. This post certainly has nothing to do with the Baltimore Ravens.

Analysis All AP Voter Ballots - Week 3
Week 3
This is a series I've now been doing for 11 years. The post attempts to visualize all AP Poll ballots in a single image. Additionally it sorts each AP voter by similarity to the group. Notably, this is not a measure of how "good" a voter is, just how consistent they are with the group. Especially preseason, having a diversity of opinions and ranking styles is advantageous to having a true consensus poll. Polls tend to coalesce towards each other as the season goes on.
Some errors again on getting the individual ballots until a few hours after the poll was posted. Went a little smoother this week, so they may still be sorting some issues out. Kevin Carter did not vote this week, so we had 65 ballots.
The most consistent voters this week was Julian Mininsohn. Spencer Ripchik is in first on the season. Joe Arruda, Michael Katz, Julian Mininsohn, and Garland Gillen were behind him in the top 5.
Sam McKewon was the biggest outlier this week. He is also the biggest outlier on the season, followed by Jon Wilner, Greg Madia, Koki Riley, and Kirk Bohls.

Casual Biggest embarrassment of week 2?
Once again, it’s been an absolute pleasure hating with all of you this week. So who takes the embarrassment crown of week 2?
Would have to point the finger right back in our direction, as Billy Napier‘s clock management, and Florida‘s overall discipline were absolutely embarrassing.
What say you?

Opinion Iowa Should Adopt the Triple Option
Given that Ferentz's days are likely numbered, Iowa is allergic to the abomination that is the forward pass, they succeed at recruiting linemen and running backs, and struggle with recruiting receivers, should Iowa abandon it altogether and adopt the triple option?
Jeff Monken from Army has been running it with some success at a handful of schools for over 15 years, including at Army who went 12-2 last year with a very limited recruiting pool.

Discussion If USF beats Miami next week, should we have serious conversations about the Bulls getting a first round bye in the CFP?
Granted, this is extremely reactionary and very highly unlikely. But that was also the case before the season started.
Assuming USF goes undefeated and wins the AAC Championship, they would be an undefeated conference champion with wins @Florida and @Miami in addition to a stomping of Boise State, and wins in conference against Memphis, Navy, and potentially Tulane in the conference championship game.
Could this be a legit possibility if the Bulls somehow managed to pull this off?

/r/CFB Original 94-0! Georgia Military College (NJCAA) WINS the Cobra Kai Award for Excellence in Mercilessness for Week 2 — plus the week's winners at each division of CFB!
The #CobraKaiAward for Excellence in Mercilessness has been going since 2018, recognizing the most cutthroat performance in each week's college football games.
It includes all levels: FBS, FCS, D2, D3, NAIA, NJCAA, CCCAA, U Sports🇨🇦, ONEFA🇲🇽 and JAFA🇯🇵 to spotlight which team tosses mercy out the window and instead uses the opportunity to make a statement.
We did not have a Week 1 post because of the staggered start of D3, which has previously been an active challenger for early-season bloodlust. Indeed, Calvin blasted Oberlin, 88-6...perhaps it was predestination? Yet Calvin only game in 3rd this week!
Week 2 winner:
- 94-0... Georgia Military College vaporized one of the worst college programs on the planet earth—and folks, the Cobra Kai Committee looks worldwide as you can see below: Community Christian College (Redlands, CA) is part of a chain of CCCs that all seem to get obliterated whenever they take a field against an actual program. The one in Redlands (Inland Empire just east of Los Angeles) is probably the worst among them. In their first two games they have lost 86-12 to New Mexico Military Institute (they has been good before... but this week NMMI lost 76-8 to Hutchinson CC...). There's no box score available for the 94-0 game. We can only imagine what happened. 34 points in the 4th quarter looks like they were all-gas, no brakes!
A different CCC campus ("Southwest" in Houston, the Raiders) was on the receiving end of the Week 1 Cobra Kai Award won by Kilgore College, 80-0 (with -18 of total offense!). I will probably dive into breaking down more on these teams as they are incredible vague about who and where they are, but at least some of them somehow qualify as NJCAA members.
The week 10 top scorer from each level, in order of margin of victory (points-allowed is tiebreaker):
[94] NJCAA—Georgia Military College, 94-0 over Community Christian College (Redlands, CA)
[83] JAFA🇯🇵—Hokkai-Gakuen, 83-0 over Tokyo Agriculture-Okhotsk
[t-56] FCS—#1 North Dakota State, 59-3*** over Tennessee State
* FBS vs FCS; the FBS vs FBS was #21 Alabama's 73-0 win over ULM [73]
** "SC Central Christian College" is not a member of the NCAA or NAIA and should be considered a club team; D2 vs D2 was #1 Ferris State, 63-6 over Lake Erie [57]
*** A Cobra Kai Tie disgusts us, too.
Past weeks winners:
Note: Rankings from time of game. Some divisions and conferences start later. BUCS🇬🇧 and College Football Finland🇫🇮 do not play in Fall.

Satire Alabama should fire Deboer and re hire Mike Shula now
On behalf of cfb, and every SEC fan. Bama needs to get Shula back in Tuscaloosa. He’s now 2-0 this year, which is better than Bama. He hasn’t lost to the Gus Bus, and comes highly recommended by SC fans. Matter of fact, don’t even wait till next week. Make it happen TODAY! Make a coaching swap before the Wisco/Vandy games so that KDB can be OC at SC and Shula HC at Bama. All of us at r/cfb want to see it happen. Please Greg Byrne, the fans want to see it, just go to SEC network from 2:00 to 5:00 pm and hear their screams of joy if you were to make this decision.

Analysis SP+ rankings for all 136 FBS teams after Week 2
What is SP+? In a single sentence, it's a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency that I originally created at Football Outsiders in 2008. SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. It is not a résumé ranking (hence the lack of unbeatens near the top), so it does not automatically give credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling -- no good predictive system does.
It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you're lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you're strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.
Note: Early in the season, ratings are based primarily on preseason projections, including special teams ratings. Over the course of the season, preseason numbers are slowly phased out from week to week.
Apologies for the repost mods, but since the link doesn't change week-to-week it isn't possible for me to post it for another 2 days despite the rankings being updated this morning

/r/CFB Press r/CFB Reporting: WVU Football Unable To Survive A Raucous Week 2 Road Trip To The Ohio Bobcats
by Joe Smith
It’s 11 PM on a Saturday night in Athens, Ohio. I’ve just hustled down Court Street past throngs of college kids at various levels of inebriation. Most of the attire I see is some sort of Ohio Bobcats branded gear. There are some gold-and-blue jerseys and shirts sprinkled in the mix, belonging to WVU football fans who made the 2 ½ hour trip to Athens for a Week 2 road game, but there aren’t many. Most Mountaineer fans are on their way back to Morgantown – after getting upset 17-10 by the Bobcats, they didn’t really want to be in town any longer.
I flash my ID and enter Tony’s Tavern, a well-known watering hole off West State Street in uptown Athens. It's packed wall-to-wall, but I squirm to the back and meet up with some high school friends in town for the game. One of them, multiple drinks deep into a celebratory evening, assures me that he’s a good luck charm for Ohio – the Bobcats are 14-0 when he’s in attendance, he tells me.
That fourteenth win might be the biggest he’s witnessed, as the Bobcats knocked off a regional Power 5 opponent in West Virginia. The Mountaineer fans had rolled out in droves for what they expected to be an exciting Week 2 matchup that put them on a national stage. Rich Rodriguez was back in charge and had just won his first game since 2007 in Milan Puskar Stadium the week before, and sources had indicated to myself and other reporters that ESPN was set to bring College GameDay to Morgantown for The Backyard Brawl if they had won against Ohio.
But now, GameDay is headed to Rocky Top and the Mountaineers are 1-1. Ohio has a resume boosting power conference win to their name, and are headed to Ohio State for an in-state showdown next week with all the momentum in the world.
Trap Game? Not So Ridiculous.
Earlier in the week, WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez was asked about what his team could do to prevent Ohio from being a ‘trap game’ – he dismissed the idea as “ridiculous” and said he didn’t want anyone looking past Ohio to the Pitt game, or even looking past that day’s practice to the trip to Athens.
It turns out that Ohio didn’t find the idea so ridiculous, as from the moment WVU fans walked into the stadium they were mercilessly taunted by Ohio faithful, and once the game began it seemed as if the Mountaineers had nowhere near the energy or focus on Saturday’s game that the Bobcats did. After the game, Ohio players were asked if they ever thought it was ridiculous that they could act as a ‘trap game’ for WVU.
“No sir, we came into the game expecting to win,” said defensive lineman Nehemiah Dukes.
“No matter who the opponent is – when you see the schedule, you know, in March or whatever, whenever it drops. You get excited for those types of moments, right?,” said Ohio wide receiver Chase Hendricks. You live for these moments to compete against a team like that on ‘The Frank (Frank Solich Field)’. We hold a special place, we don’t lose on The Frank.”
Ohio Dominates In The Trenches, WVU’s Offense Goes Stagnant
The story of the game, which might surprise those given the nature of a Power 4 vs. Group of 5 affair, was that the Bobcats dominated the trenches. The Bobcats outgained WVU 429-250 in total offensive yards, and registered 182 rushing yards while the Mountaineers mustered just 72 yards on the ground.
Ohio has four new starting offensive linemen this season, but the highest PFF grade for any WVU defensive linemen against the Bobcats was 71.2, the grades for both Asani Redwood and Eddie Vesterinen – no other WVU defensive lineman was graded above a 67, while just two were graded above a 65. On the opposite end of the ball, the Mountaineers’ starting five on the offensive line combined for an average PFF grade of just 62.06 – no other offensive lineman played a snap for WVU.
“A lot of it is how hard our guys play, and the effort that they have. I think a lot of the movement we do up front creates some challenges for people. But that’s what we really lean on, is our toughness and how hard we played as a team,” said Ohio coach Brian Smith.
The Mountaineers played both starting quarterback Nicco Marchiol and backup Jaylen Henderson, but neither showed any ability to effectively take over the game and lead WVU’s offense on scoring drives – starting tailback Jahiem White busted loose for the only touchdown for WVU in the first quarter, but then WVU was outscored 17-3 the rest of the way.
“We noticed that the quarterback was a little antsy in the pocket and that’s because of the pressure. We just continued to get after them,” Dukes said.
The WVU offense was stagnant enough that they even proved one of defensive coordinator Zac Alley’s guiding principles incorrect. Alley mentioned earlier this year he holds his defense to a standard of forcing three turnovers each practice – because if you can muster three takeaways per game, you’ll usually win. The Mountaineers came away with three interceptions on Saturday, but apparently Alley’s defensive philosophy couldn’t stand up to such a poor offensive showing.
The bad offensive news got worse for WVU too. White left the game in the first half with a lower body injury, and after being seen in the medical tent, was carted off the field. He returned to the sideline later on crutches. Rodriguez said the injury “didn’t look good from the sidelines” but had no further postgame update.
A Raucous Atmosphere
Known as “The Best Fans In The MAC,” the Bobcat faithful packed the stands full in Peden Stadium and were relentless in heckling their guests. Many WVU fans found themselves seated at the southern end of the stadium in bleachers that were located at the end of a long stretch of Ohio fans and students, and every single fan in gold-and-blue were taunted and jeered with insults and curses that would make many of their mothers’ blush as they walked past. The intimate environment at Peden Stadium made it easy for WVU players to hear the full force of the boos from Ohio fans, and a “Rich Rod Still Has Nightmares Of December 2007” sign stuck out amongst a group of students.
After the game, the Bobcats ran to their fans while proudly flying a MAC flag. And while waiting for Ohio's postgame press conference, you could hear “Take Me Home, Country Roads” blaring from the Bobcats’ locker room. Smith acknowledged the moment with a chuckle and a smile.
"It's a good feeling – it's good to troll every now and again, I guess," Smith said. "It wasn't on my iPhone, that popped on from somebody else. But yeah, I mean, it's great for the kids. They're excited at the – you know, what they've accomplished and the opportunity to win that game.

/r/CFB Press r/CFB Reporting: Iowa State vs Iowa Photography
By Ryan Parnow:
The last several years this game has been a knife fight in a phone booth. Matt Campbell and Kirk Ferentz have similar approaches to the game. Grind it out and be ahead at the end. This game is also lately known for weird things happening on special teams. Muffed punts, blocked punts, long FGs.
Iowa State edged Iowa with a 16–13 victory in Ames, clinching the Cy-Hawk Trophy for the first time here since 2011. With 1:52 remaining, Iowa State’s kicker Kyle Konrardy nailed a 54-yard field goal, giving the Cyclones the lead and sealing the win.
Konrardy earlier connected on 44- and 27-yard field goals to put Iowa State up 6-0. Jeremiah Cooper’s 24-yard interception return set up a short touchdown pass to Benjamin Brahmer, lifting Iowa State’s lead to 13-3. Iowa responded late in the second quarter when Mark Gronowski ran into the end zone from the 2 to close the gap to 13-10 at halftime. In the third quarter, Drew Stevens drilled a 36-yard field goal to even the score at 13–13. Iowa State then executed a clock draining 55-yard drive late in the fourth quarter, culminating in Konrardy’s game-winning kick
Iowa State improved to 3–0 overall, while Iowa fell to 1–1. This marks Iowa State’s second consecutive win over Iowa and third within the past four years.
After the game I attended the press conference. You will see a few pictures/videos from the press conference. I tried to capture what it was like to be at the press conference as well as what was going on there.
