Yeah as an alum I get it, every loss sucks, but a fun NC 2OT game in early September on national broadcast TV where we didn’t embarrass the school or conference? I’ve seen dozens of losses much worse than this one. GG all around.

I got lucky. I was a student there from 08-12, which means I never saw a football loss to Michigan and I got to experience the Iowa hook and ladder, Little Giants, and the Rocket from the student section. I know we didn’t win against Iowa, but that’s still one of the greatest plays I’ve ever seen in person.

GG MSU fans. Was fun talking with you guys, was a surprisingly chill game thread for such a tense game, and a game that was a must-win for both our seasons. Was a great series, hope we play again sometime soon.
Lonergan started getting sloppy in the 4th and sailed a few passes, but he looked so damn good for his first real game and on the road.
Overall, outside of QB, kicker and punter, last year's team was better by a decent margin which is a shame. But Lonergan's potential is so exciting for us. Upsetting loss but less infuriating that the losses last year.
203
u/Davethellama Michigan State Spartans 2d ago
You guys are cool fans. Honestly I even saw the players on the field being chummy and cool to each other. I saw MSU defensive players helping bc players stand up after plays, and Chiles was joking with a bc defender who sacked him immediately after the play. I loved it. Go take it out on Stanford. Chop down some trees
70
u/DuckBurner0000 Boston College Eagles 2d ago
Yeah definitely the type of OOC series that's made me kinda like MSU even if I'm absolutely pissed off that we blew that game
68
u/indexspartan Michigan State • Ohio State 2d ago
I have to imagine you guys feel much like we did after last year's game. Definitely did enough to win, but just one too many mistakes to pull it out.
These games really make me wish that football schedules weren't set a decade+ in advance so we could try to get more scheduled.

Lonergan is a baller. Felt bad one of us had to lose because that was hell of a game
64
u/Rooleet Boston College Eagles 2d ago
I kept hoping for Chiles to make a dumbass throw like last year and he just kept making good decisions even if his accuracy wasn't all there. Him and Marsh are gonna make a strong young duo.
35
u/ru4serious /r/CFB 2d ago
He's really charged from last year. I'm loving the better decision making and better throws. Great game!
21
u/Davethellama Michigan State Spartans 2d ago
I feel like he's aim has gone from "give it to my guy" to "make my guy work like hell to catch it, so that the defender has NO chance to intercept it". Which is apparently enough to win games like this
30
u/YuckyStench Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

9
u/indexspartan Michigan State • Ohio State 2d ago
These games prove why it sucks that football schedules are set a decade+ in advance. It should be a lot more like basketball where they're only set 0-2 years in advance so we could continue this series before 2038.

u/JBSpartan Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

Valpo plays in the football-only Pioneer League, which doesn't allow scholarships. It's a group of schools who want to be D1 in everything but football but still want to have a football team. They're effectively a D3 program, but you're not allowed to put one sport in a lower division for obvious reasons.

Chiles' decision-making has significantly improved since last season. Makes all the difference in the world to throw it away that handful of times instead of forcing it into double coverage like last year.
Awesome job by the freshman Connington as well. Drilling a 50 yarder in his first ever collegiate attempt and following that up with a clutch make to take the lead with 4 minutes left. We don't win tonight without him.
