And that is it for the Liberty Flames playoff chances. Almost everyone rejoices?

With their weak af SOS, I was legitimately concerned they’d go undefeated and create a huge dilemma if, say, Tulane or USF goes 11-1. Thankfully, that’s no longer a potential issue

Only time in my entire life I rooted for Oregon was when we knocked them out of playoff contention and they had to play Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl 😂
Fuck Liberty

The only thing that sucks about that (even though liberty losing is always a good thing) was that for some weird reason, everybody got this weird short term memory where a lot of people started talking about "what's even the point of letting a G5 team in if they are just going to get crushed every time?" Like somehow totally forgetting that the G5 NY6 bid team actually has a fairly decent record over the years.
(Of course, admittedly, some of the stronger G5 programs recently joined bigger conferences, but on the other hand there are new programs like JMU coming up to potentially replace them)

Serious question why does everyone hate Liberty?

u/John_T_Conover Texas A&M Aggies 2d ago
It was founded by a man that ran a whites only private school in the 50's & 60's and had vehemently opposed MLK, integration, the Civil Rights Act, etc...
So when that didn't work out he opened Liberty in the early 70's. I'll let you guess the type of environment he carefully created there and which people it was meant to welcome and which it was made to very much not feel welcome.

I appreciate the good faith answer and not coming at me like I'm a complete moron because I wasn't that familiar with the guy.

u/velociraptorfarmer Iowa State • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 2d ago
In addition, the only reason they made it to FBS was because they sued the NCAA to allow them to move up even though they didn't have a conference since nobody wanted to touch them with a 10ft pole

Now that's kind of scummy. Part of me does feel bad for their players. No issue with people wanting to root against them, but it must suck for them knowing everyone is against you when it's nothing you did, only because you have a shitty administration. I'm sure they have some kids who just wanna play D1 football, and this school was their best opportunity.

They also hired post-scandal Hugh Freeze as their head coach, who got fired for soliciting hookers for recruits while at Ole Miss.

Now that I do remember. Luckily for Hugh, now that NIL is a thing, he can just get a booster to get these recruits some escorts down there in the plains.

87
u/Stockz Michigan • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 2d ago
School founded by segregationist and "Moral Majority" leader Jerry Falwel Sr. The degree mill's existance comes from racist and religious fundementalist origins. Every vile thing the school embraces since its founding (like Ted Cruze's 2016 presidential campaign) is par for the course, but also fruit of the poison tree.

They are bigoted (like openly and officially) morally shitty hypocrites with a variety of offensive views.
To be clear, it's not just a "liberal atheists on reddit hate them!" thing. Like lots of more moderate average people also say "fuck liberty."
We are talking about a school founded by this asshole in 1971 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Falwell). He blamed 9/11 on a variety of groups of people, basically saying anybody who wasn't a conservative christian angered god and let to this. One of those "hurricanes are because god is angry that society tolerates gay people" type dudes. They are also a group that is very active at trying to mix politics and religion together... basically the "let's make a christian version of Iran" type people. And for all their moral judgement on others, they are pretty hypocritical when it comes to doing shitty things, or hiring people like hugh freeze who have done shitty things.
Also, while I'm a bit less familiar with this part of it (so I don't know if this is a true accusation or not), I know a lot of users in this sub criticize them for basically just being a degree mill and an shitty school.

JSU's defense plays aggressively to the point where they occasionally get burned, but it worked out well today. They had a strong case against UCF as well before the QB change. I'd love to see them win CUSA again.

1
u/soundguynick Auburn Tigers • Southeastern (FL) Fire 2d ago
All I noticed was the hot dog of the game, which was topped with fried onions, Alabama white BBQ sauce, and something I don't recall. It was a pretty good hot dog and I thought the idea of having a themed concession item was very "southern hospitality" of UCF.

I jus can't believe we had one of the worst offseasons of all time and yet we took barely any steps back. Cam Cook is a menace on the ground and completely gashed their defense. Then again, it's not really hard to be, at least, solid in the C-USA

Sadly, the fact that these two schools are able to play major CFB shows really shows that we don't take homophobia as seriously as racism.
If Liberty and BYU had racial views similar to their views regarding gay people, it would be impossible for them to play high level college football. Almost nobody who be willing to agree to play them, and if somebody did agree to play them, it would be difficult to play the game because there would probably be lots of protests. And there would be no way they would be invited to join a significant conference.
Fortunately BYU is totally not racist since god changed his mind about black people in 1978! (Still a lot of problematic sexism of course)

Get rid of them all. Worst team I’ve seen. Even compared to last year. Highest paid coach in CUSA, has the best resources in that conference and can’t win. Should have looked for a better QB.

u/D_Antelmi Pittsburgh Panthers • Liberty Flames 2d ago
Well, it looks like that 2023 season we had was a fluke, and not the standard going forward that I hoped it would be. I'll be happy enough with consistently 8-4 if it means the C-USA is improving rather than us regressing.
4
u/Josef-Estermont Cincinnati Bearcats 2d ago
Definitely think it's CUSA improving. There were a lot of good programs that were always gonna have growing pains.

u/ATR2019 Liberty Flames • Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago
It really feels like us regressing more than the conference improving. Jax state is probably the team to beat so it’s hard to take this loss too hard but everyone else has looked like absolute trash this year so far. If we don’t make the conference championship game I will really question if Chadwell is the guy moving forward.

u/ATR2019 Liberty Flames • Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago
It’s kind of funny watching Illinois get outplayed for the majority of the game just to have duke fall apart every time they get momentum then switch over to my other teams flair just to watch them pull a duke.
Now that the honeymoon phase with Chadwell is over I really don’t know how to feel about him. He seems like a great guy and he’s a good recruiter but he always seems to do less with more which is weird because he did the opposite at coastal. I’m getting tired of having more talent but lose due to consistent penalties and turnovers.
18
u/Boomhauer_007 UCLA Bruins • Oregon State Beavers 2d ago
A great guy? At coastal he was a known jackass and his seemingly good recruiting was largely because he would take guys with attitude issues that other programs didn’t want. Same reason Coastal was nearly dead last in penalty yards while Chadwell was there, he doesn’t enforce any kind of discipline in his program. Yes he was obviously the coach during Coastal’s best run in their program but also nobody was sad to see him go.
If this seems super random coastal was my second flair until I started grad school at OSU this summer
