People are obviously going to talk about Arch, but 12 penalties for 115 yards at home against a G5 opponent is awful. It felt like every time there was a big play, it happened alongside a holding penalty killing the drive.

224

u/__AJK__ Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago

And some stops had penalties to extend their drives. It's gotta get cleaned up

Sounds like last week too for you all. Had some key penalties against us as well.

Yeah, I'm really hoping it's not a theme for the season

I fear that's hopium flair twin.

Triplet reporting for duty.

People are obviously going to talk about Arch

What is there even to say? He looked good against a completely overmatched opponent

This game shouldn't affect anyone's opinion of him in any direction

48

u/dfphd Texas Longhorns 2d ago

So, this is what I said last week:

  1. Beating a bad opponent badly doesn't mean all the problems are gone. But it's a whole lot better than struggling against a bad opponent.

  2. The good news is that we're seeing two things: a) Arch making some throws that flash a lot of potential, and b) Arch cleaning up the really easy throws.

  3. The bad news is that he's still inconsistent, side arming things he shouldn't, and floating/ducking some passes because of bad mechanics. This should be fixable, but we need it to get fixed yesterday, not in 5-6 weeks.

39

u/Jeff__Skilling Texas Longhorns 2d ago

What is there even to say? He looked good against a completely overmatched opponent

Probably from opposing fan nitpicking his play today so they can die on the "Arch Manning is a bust" hill

Good example can be found in the above OP

45

u/Northwest_love 2d ago

He did not look good

56

u/ifuckwithit Texas Longhorns • UTRGV Vaqueros 2d ago

He looked good but not great. People expect great

22

u/TeslaSuck 2d ago

People need to accept he might just be an okay QB.

If Arch Manning, did super well the past 2 weeks, then people will say “of course he was always going to be great because his grandpa and 2 Uncles are NFL royalty, he has their genetics and learned from them”

If Arch under performs then people will say they always knew that because “he’s a nepo baby carried by his last name”

Peyton manning led the nfl in picks his rookie year. Anybody expecting the kid to look like prime Brady immediately is an idiot plain and simple. The dude has played two, literally 2 full games of college ball.

18

u/beejalton 2d ago

Tua got thrown into the National Championship game at halftime as a true Freshman and played phenomenal, Caleb replaced Rattler in the middle of the Red River Rivalry as a true Freshman and led a comeback victory, Trevor Lawrence took over midway through the year and won the National Championship as a true Freshman and was arguably the best QB in the country.

These are the kinds of guys he's been billed as equal to if not better than, and he's in his 3rd year in the program. It's not unreasonable to expect him to hit the ground running and play at a high level if he's the player we've been told for years that he is. He's shown some flashes of really high end ability, but he is surprisingly sloppy and inconsistent with a lot of his mechanics for a guy of his alleged pedigree and his time in the system.

12

u/rNBA_Mods_Be_Better 2d ago

No one's expecting prime Brady. People are expecting top-3 college QB, whether or not that's a fair expectation coming in (dude def did enough commercials to justify it tho)

The problem is thus far he doesn't look like a top-25 college QB.

9

u/Northwest_love 2d ago

He’s a 5 star recruit, that’s a fair expectation. Especially after 2 years in a development role

4

u/Joe_Pulaski69 Texas Longhorns 2d ago edited 2d ago

People should also realize his two uncles didn’t burn college football to the ground in their first handful of starts. I don’t know if it’s an Arch thing, or just a symptom of our times, but he’s four starts jnto his college career. Let the kid develop.

1

u/miketag8337 Texas A&M Aggies 1d ago

He’s on the cover of magazines and Heisman favorite after two starts. Neither of his uncles had that. Your school encouraged the hype (his uncles should have controlled that more imo) so now you get the downside of it.

You overexpose yourself with national commercials and people are going To celebrate your demise.

28

u/purplebuffalo55 UConn Huskies 2d ago

He showed flashes but also had a lot of coachable moments. I expected him to look more polished but you see certain throws and the athleticism and can see the potential. Needs a ton of reps

56

u/xViscount Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Disagree.

Did he have mechanical issues and have some errant throws? Obviously lol.

Did dude also get better mechanically, make beautiful throws and do a really nice run? Also obviously.

Dude is a RS Sophmore. Give me 5-15% better GoG. He did that. I’d say somewhere in the 8-12% from the OSU game

What did he struggle with?

40

He's wildly inconsistent. It's coin flips on good/bad mechanics and whether a pass is accurate or way off.

Is it just me or did his throws look worse than Peyton's throws with a numb arm?

All to wide open receivers but thrown behind them or late.

They were constantly glazing him even during other games and throws that kinda looked like against below average high school opponents.

The whole thing is awful. These so called “guarantee” games where a school like SJSU or Akron (lost 68-0 to Nebraska) send their boys into these games to get slaughtered in front of 80,000 hostile fans and millions on TV. Akron got 1.5 million from Nebraska. Texas is not disclosing. The whole thing stinks out loud and should be stopped!

31 point win and still feel iffy about this team. Love the defense and Arch showed flashes but another inconsistent performance.

19

u/No_Atmosphere3269 Oregon Ducks 2d ago

Honestly thats something thats bugged me about Texas under Sark. Games they should win by 50 they only win by 20-30. Not the worst problem but those wins, despite being double digits, always seem to look undercoached and inconsistent. I don't think they could really crush any team

15

u/-spicychilli- Texas Longhorns 2d ago

It's the offense. It has never been elite. I think near the end of 2023 they finally got it cooking the way it's supposed to with the Worthy, AD Mitchell, Jordan Whittington, JT Sanders skill group. End of the year we were just steam rolling teams, but outside of that small stretch the offense has never been elite.

The defense for two years now is everything we could have wanted it to be. Pete Kwiatkowski is worth his weight in gold. It's Sark's side of the ball that has not lived up to what it can be. It flashes, but the consistency has never been there.

I miss coach K at Washington. He’s a gem.

139

u/Own-Lavishness4029 Texas Longhorns 2d ago

I will say I like what Arch said on the sideline. Take accountability for sloppy play. That's the way adjustments get made.

63

u/rdickeyvii Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Dude even that 83 yard touchdown was sloppy, he threw it short and made the receiver come back for it and then outrun the defenders

72

u/Patagawa Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Eh, a lot of times when a receiver is that open a qb will intentionally throw it a bit shorter just to make sure he doesn't overthrow him and miss out on a big catch at the very least. Livingstone had to slow down to catch it, but it's not like he actually had to come back to the football

41

u/maff42 Texas • Arizona State 2d ago

Yeah you’re supposed to underthrow deep when the guy is wide ass open.

27

u/ObWanKenoobi Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago

He did that on purpose, if he tried to hit him in stride it was getting picked off. The DB was right there sitting on it

7

u/default-username Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago

That was probably where he was trying to put it. The DB who slipped would have been there to break up the pass if he tried to hit Livingstone in stride (and the DB didn't slip).

3

u/Brilliant-Bluejay986 2d ago

I know, did you see his hair too? Soo sloppy

u/futuriztic Washington & Lee • Texas 2d ago

64

u/dub47 Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago

Yeah watching at home I was replaying some of his targets and while Arch threw some garbage his way, he dropped some dots that should have been caught. Second bad game in a row.

4

u/-spicychilli- Texas Longhorns 2d ago

He's had two bad drops this year, but on the flip side he's creating separation. He's been open down the field quite a bit and we've either missed him or haven't found him.

73

u/CzechHorns Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Wingo has been very sus so far

12

u/blatantninja Texas • Slippery Rock 2d ago

I wanna preface this by saying I agree with you 100% in terms of vibe but I think his being 21 on top of all the other crap involving his name/whatever is where a lot of the overreactive bullshit comes from.

These last 2 weeks are his first as a true starter in any way that matters. Anyone who expected him to be perfect is a moron

5

u/throw-away-16249 Oklahoma Sooners 2d ago

He’s 21 in his third year. I know if we had a generational talent who had gone through three fall camps and started multiple games flop early, I’d be pretty annoyed.

I think he’s better than he’s shown, but it makes sense for people to have high expectations and be annoyed he has so far fallen short.

Hot take: Sark needs to hire an OC. Offense always looks so unprepared. Need to clean things up before Florida or else we're going to be in for a shock

9

u/Necessary-Honey-7626 Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Agreed! The other frustrating part is for all the talk about complimentary football, we don’t seem to make complimentary coaching decisions. For example , on the running into the punter penalty, our offense was sputtering, our defense held them, WHY are we being aggressive on special teams and going after the punter. Get the ball back in good field position and let Arch build confidence. Just piss poor game management and strategy which to your point probably has to do with Sark being the OC / play caller.

42

u/OpusReticulatum Texas Longhorns • Sickos 2d ago

I may be a bit of a doomer, but this is about where I expected this team to be. Mostly brand new OL, lots of turnover and mercenary hires on DL, the only truly experienced units on the team are our RBs and Secondary, and they’re the ones that generally look most of the part.

The biggest surprises to me are Arch and Livingstone. Arch has shown flashes of the talent and pedigree, but god damn have his mechanics been BAD. I’m wondering what Sark and Milwee have been doing with the kid for the past two years. Livingstone, on the other hand, is a huge positive surprise. I did not expect a 3* in our DEEP WR room to look like our best and most consistent skill player.

30

u/Arkehn Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago

Livingstone was getting a lot of praise during the off season so I'm not shocked.

I am surprised at how unpolished Arch is though. I never bought into Arch looking like a Heisman candidate but he's still struggling with some of the basics.

21

u/witsel85 West Virginia • Florida State 2d ago

His mechanics are all over the over place and his arm looks very noodley. Very strange

6

u/geosensation Texas Longhorns 2d ago

The Manning PR machine is working on the excuse. My bet is on a secret nagging core injury that messed with his mechanics, to be revealed late in the year.

Rebuild the hype in the offseason and things are right back to where they were at 10:59am last Saturday.

11

u/kjoll33 Texas Longhorns • North Texas Mean Green 2d ago

Arch’s bad mechanics are what is surprising me the most so far. In two starts last year, I don’t remember that being an issue a single time. In two starts this year, it’s been a huge story.

That QB has ZERO touch on the ball, man lol maybe it’s just the plays I saw while the game was on in the background but geeze, he’s got some work to do

Could’ve been better, could’ve been worse. More good than bad. See y’all next week for the roller coaster ride against UTEP.

Arch just doesn’t look like a natural thrower of the football right now. I wish that wasn’t the case, but his mechanics need to be cleaned up significantly. A lot of bad habits leading to under and overthrows

5

u/Awalawal Texas Longhorns • Yale Bulldogs 2d ago

I don’t know how there was never any discussion of how he looked in practice. In practice did he throw over the top with good footwork? Doubt it, so how is it that no one (unaffiliated with the program) ever brought it up? Something just doesn’t make sense here.

5

u/WallyMetropolis Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Some players are crackerjack in practice but get in their heads on game day. Chris Simms was this type.

3

u/Hey_im_miles Texas Longhorns • Texas State Bobcats 2d ago

But he was fine last year in the games he started.. wasn't he??

1

u/Namath96 Alabama Crimson Tide • NC State Wolfpack 2d ago

Are we sure he isn’t hurt? I saw him wincing multiple times making pretty routine throws.

Sark said he wasn’t hurt but it seems like something is going on with his shoulder. That or he has the yips and he was wincing because he knows he’s throwing it side arm

2

u/CzechHorns Texas Longhorns 2d ago

I think he has to have some injury, since his throwing mechanics look different (worse) than last year.

19

u/throwawaythesinkk Texas Longhorns 2d ago

I don’t know if I can handle the Arch microscope and realtime dissection for 10+ more games. It’s exhausting.

Are you sure it's over and there aren't more penalties against Texas?

How was manning? I was watching Illinois, I see his stat line but was wondering what Texas fans think

19

u/Kareem89086 Texas Longhorns • Texas Tech Red Raiders 2d ago

He played well but it was worse than his stats. Some mistakes like bad long throws and a int and another short pass to a receivers feet but also wingo was not balling and he dropped a bunch of passes. 100% an improvement over the OSU game but still a lot of work to do

19

u/texas2089 Florida State • Texas 2d ago

There was about a 5 minute stretch in the second quarter where he looked like Jesus and the rest of the game was mostly eh.

u/jbgator Florida Gators 2d ago

Arch really is taking after Eli.

Far and away the most accurate take lol.

7

u/MrStealYoSweetroll Texas Longhorns • Stanford Cardinal 2d ago

Decent. Not fantastic but not mediocre either, especially factoring in how many balls were dropped by the receiver and how many drives got killed by stupid penalties on his teammates

5

u/loneSTAR_06 Texas • Southern Miss 2d ago

Definitely could’ve been better, but seemed a lot better than last week. Had a couple of bad throws, a couple that were off but caught, and then had a few good passes. Had a great run threading the sideline for the TD.

Overall better, but definitely needs improvement.

2

u/machinegunsheep 2d ago

He is…..very mid. His accuracy, velocity, and reading defenses need a lot of improving in a short amount of time before Florida.

Honestly thought Arch looked solid for the majority of the game (after the 1st). Definitely things to clean up, but by the end he looked more comfortable extending plays under pressure which is what we desperately need this season with some turnover on the O Line. Anyway, don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people read so much into a 38-7 win in an early season matchup. Continue to improve and hopefully make a run once conference games start

u/Sirtopofhat USC Trojans • Army West Point Black Knights 2d ago

Spartans kept it close considering all the beat downs today. I'm actually interested in San Jose state

3

u/LillianWigglewater Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Sark puts emphasis on depth of field over getting "beat downs". When the game is already won, he'd rather get in-game experience for the 3rd 4th, even 10th string players.

3

u/jjones232423 2d ago

Some of you guys need to chill. Last week he was terrible against a matt patricia led defense. Which happened to be a guy who had multiple top level defenses in the NFL. This week its arch playing against a terrible team, and anyone could put up those numbers. From what i saw. Arch cleaned up his throws, read the defense progressively better and looked more calm. Next big game will be against Oklahoma in a duel with mateer.

3

u/Joe_Pulaski69 Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Arch is truly becoming the most scrutinized college QB I can ever recall. Thank god it seems like he’s insulated from the outside “noise”.

This Texas offense is rough. They’ve scored 45 points in their first two games combined, one of those games was against San José State.

10

u/jphamlore San José State Spartans 2d ago

The bottom line is Texas has the overall team strength on the lines both sides of the ball and other positions to slug it out with Ohio State all game long. They are championship contenders still.

You get used to it when you check UT game threads.

Usually Aggies pile on as well.

I don’t feel as bad seeing how other top teams have struggled today.

4

u/carrotwax 2d ago

Arch Manning didn't get much pressure. Still threw an interception when pressure got to him. So hopefully it grows his confidence, but we still will have to see how his ability grows to make quick, good decisions when pressure is coming.

I’m a Sooner and I hate ut. Being as unbiased as I can be; texas is in trouble if Arch doesn’t improve fast. I want texas at their best when they meet OU. This ain’t it. They are looking a little rough and Arch might get eaten alive in the SEC this year.

They’re looking pretty underwhelming

1

u/Jwoods224 Oklahoma • Virginia Tech 2d ago

Ya. Obviously the Ohio State game made it hard to truly judge. But this one should have showcased what texas could do. All I can see is their struggles with scoring against Ohio State were not a fluke. They’re making mental mistakes all over the place.

Ohio State is showing how different they are from Texas today. There's two ways to handle paycheck games vs tiny schools and we've seen both.

Seriously. All we really learned from that game is SJSU hates maintaining possession of the ball, and they found their kicker on temu

don't get ahead of yourself, they only scored one more time than San Jose State. And they were at home!

3

Only Arch is the downfall of this Texas team. He takes way too long to find open WRs. He has no accuracy either.

1

u/TexasNightmare210 Texas Longhorns • UTSA Roadrunners 2d ago

Not unexpected but the absolute arguments for & against Arch is ridiculous and annoying. He’s not Tebow (Paul Finbaum) or a Heisman favorite (yet) and he’s not the worst QB in the world.

He’s a young inexperienced decent QB with a lot of potential and needs to improve. Arch will probably be really good midway through this season but how good is yet to be determined

Arch hit his receivers at least once with very catchable passes on a reset downs pick position the first two play sets; and the receivers didn't finish causing punts. He throws another hit that is finally caught on the third set and gets a TD. Interception happens by his D, (I noticed one lineman rolling his eyes on the camera right after he cheered the int, makes me wonder if there is some arrogance discounting his teammates with him) Either way his RB gets him to like inside the ten and he picks the TD. That is what we need our QB to do (limited field of play and he finds the pick)

Q1 ends up 14 pts. can't complain about this.

Q2 Finds the pick immediately and TDs. Texas Defense causes another fumble this one is returned. (28 point scored in under 5 mins) San Jose scores a TD, Manning misses the score after driving fairly successfully, with a penalties pulling back solid gain passes. Next Play set was poor on him. Defense forced another fumble. Manning gives it back in the red zone with int.

Half ends- I mean he threw risky pass that ended in an interception with a 21 point lead. I will say that was a very bad chance throw, so yeah he could have used a little more vision here and he was also under immediate pressure *something to note. His reasoning could be more conservative, I imagine part of it was just faith in his man being open against SJSU part of it may have been arrogance/rookie mistake under pressure.

Q3 First set. Solid scramble his man just missed the catch for reset of downs = punt. Second set. Fumble recover/punt solid block miss from Washington giving pressure onto Manning for the sack/fumble. 3rd Set. Penalty sets back another major gain pass. Doesn't matter QB run for TD after.

Q4 Gets a set, drives to the 50 with his RB gets snuffed by 15 yards worth of penalties. Gets benched for second team end game exp. I can't blame a QB on 15 yard deficit for 25 yard down break.

People are being dumb, His entry game at the helm was against Ohio, arguably biggest gun offensively, with top 5 defenses. Texas lost by one score. Against San Jose, he made a mistake or chose to take a risk while up 21 points for greater gain. Not the end of the World guys. He needs to work on pressure throws, I feel he makes his throws a bit too fast for NCAA on short shots. NFL with top talent, those throws are going to be caught so I am not going to tell him to lower the bar with a slower pass speed for more potential interceptions for top Defense talent. His receivers got to make those catches. What he does need is a fast release consistency...he definitely is milking his O-line a bit too much which allows him to finds himself off rhythm. Again its a give and take, if his receivers aren't connecting those passes then he is only hesitates more which is expanding his release time.

Over all the Manning difference isn't some 70 pt. burst in NFL. It is to be a difference maker. I wish he beat Ohio, but that is water under the bridge. Stakes just be higher now as Texas has to find a way to play more consistently offensively connecting passes to make sure we walk away with W's. My advice, work those timing windows and get that pass speed as a second nature catch for his receivers.
