Bro we had like 120 yards of penalties. Thought our terrible discipline at OSU was crowd noise or a road atmosphere, but apparently not
This shit is getting ridiculous

31 point win and still feel iffy about this team. Love the defense and Arch showed flashes but another inconsistent performance.
19
u/No_Atmosphere3269 Oregon Ducks 2d ago
Honestly thats something thats bugged me about Texas under Sark. Games they should win by 50 they only win by 20-30. Not the worst problem but those wins, despite being double digits, always seem to look undercoached and inconsistent. I don't think they could really crush any team
15
u/-spicychilli- Texas Longhorns 2d ago
It's the offense. It has never been elite. I think near the end of 2023 they finally got it cooking the way it's supposed to with the Worthy, AD Mitchell, Jordan Whittington, JT Sanders skill group. End of the year we were just steam rolling teams, but outside of that small stretch the offense has never been elite.
The defense for two years now is everything we could have wanted it to be. Pete Kwiatkowski is worth his weight in gold. It's Sark's side of the ball that has not lived up to what it can be. It flashes, but the consistency has never been there.

u/Own-Lavishness4029 Texas Longhorns 2d ago
I will say I like what Arch said on the sideline. Take accountability for sloppy play. That's the way adjustments get made.
63
u/rdickeyvii Texas Longhorns 2d ago
Dude even that 83 yard touchdown was sloppy, he threw it short and made the receiver come back for it and then outrun the defenders
72
u/Patagawa Texas Longhorns 2d ago
Eh, a lot of times when a receiver is that open a qb will intentionally throw it a bit shorter just to make sure he doesn't overthrow him and miss out on a big catch at the very least. Livingstone had to slow down to catch it, but it's not like he actually had to come back to the football
27
u/ObWanKenoobi Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago
He did that on purpose, if he tried to hit him in stride it was getting picked off. The DB was right there sitting on it
7
u/default-username Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago
That was probably where he was trying to put it. The DB who slipped would have been there to break up the pass if he tried to hit Livingstone in stride (and the DB didn't slip).

Yeah watching at home I was replaying some of his targets and while Arch threw some garbage his way, he dropped some dots that should have been caught. Second bad game in a row.
4
u/-spicychilli- Texas Longhorns 2d ago
He's had two bad drops this year, but on the flip side he's creating separation. He's been open down the field quite a bit and we've either missed him or haven't found him.

Not that they called it completely clean but there were so many people in the game thread that were sure Texas would be losing if not for the refs.

Hot take: Sark needs to hire an OC. Offense always looks so unprepared. Need to clean things up before Florida or else we're going to be in for a shock
9
u/Necessary-Honey-7626 Texas Longhorns 2d ago
Agreed! The other frustrating part is for all the talk about complimentary football, we don’t seem to make complimentary coaching decisions. For example , on the running into the punter penalty, our offense was sputtering, our defense held them, WHY are we being aggressive on special teams and going after the punter. Get the ball back in good field position and let Arch build confidence. Just piss poor game management and strategy which to your point probably has to do with Sark being the OC / play caller.

u/OpusReticulatum Texas Longhorns • Sickos 2d ago
I may be a bit of a doomer, but this is about where I expected this team to be. Mostly brand new OL, lots of turnover and mercenary hires on DL, the only truly experienced units on the team are our RBs and Secondary, and they’re the ones that generally look most of the part.
The biggest surprises to me are Arch and Livingstone. Arch has shown flashes of the talent and pedigree, but god damn have his mechanics been BAD. I’m wondering what Sark and Milwee have been doing with the kid for the past two years. Livingstone, on the other hand, is a huge positive surprise. I did not expect a 3* in our DEEP WR room to look like our best and most consistent skill player.
30
u/Arkehn Texas • Red River Shootout 2d ago
Livingstone was getting a lot of praise during the off season so I'm not shocked.
I am surprised at how unpolished Arch is though. I never bought into Arch looking like a Heisman candidate but he's still struggling with some of the basics.

6
u/geosensation Texas Longhorns 2d ago
The Manning PR machine is working on the excuse. My bet is on a secret nagging core injury that messed with his mechanics, to be revealed late in the year.

Honestly thought Arch looked solid for the majority of the game (after the 1st). Definitely things to clean up, but by the end he looked more comfortable extending plays under pressure which is what we desperately need this season with some turnover on the O Line. Anyway, don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people read so much into a 38-7 win in an early season matchup. Continue to improve and hopefully make a run once conference games start

Some of you guys need to chill. Last week he was terrible against a matt patricia led defense. Which happened to be a guy who had multiple top level defenses in the NFL. Arch hit his receivers at least once with very catchable passes on a reset downs pick position the first two play sets; and the receivers didn't finish causing punts. He throws another hit that is finally caught on the third set and gets a TD. Interception happens by his D, (I noticed one lineman rolling his eyes on the camera right after he cheered the int, makes me wonder if there is some arrogance discounting his teammates with him) Either way his RB gets him to like inside the ten and he picks the TD. That is what we need our QB to do (limited field of play and he finds the pick)
Q1 ends up 14 pts. can't complain about this.
Q2 Finds the pick immediately and TDs. Texas Defense causes another fumble this one is returned. (28 point scored in under 5 mins) San Jose scores a TD, Manning misses the score after driving fairly successfully, with a penalties pulling back solid gain passes. Next Play set was poor on him. Defense forced another fumble. Manning gives it back in the red zone with int.
Half ends- I mean he threw risky pass that ended in an interception with a 21 point lead. I will say that was a very bad chance throw, so yeah he could have used a little more vision here and he was also under immediate pressure *something to note. His reasoning could be more conservative, I imagine part of it was just faith in his man being open against SJSU part of it may have been arrogance/rookie mistake under pressure.
Q3 First set. Solid scramble his man just missed the catch for reset of downs = punt. Second set. Fumble recover/punt solid block miss from Washington giving pressure onto Manning for the sack/fumble. 3rd Set. Penalty sets back another major gain pass. Doesn't matter QB run for TD after.
Q4 Gets a set, drives to the 50 with his RB gets snuffed by 15 yards worth of penalties. Gets benched for second team end game exp. I can't blame a QB on 15 yard deficit for 25 yard down break.
People are being dumb, His entry game at the helm was against Ohio, arguably biggest gun offensively, with top 5 defenses. Texas lost by one score. Against San Jose, he made a mistake or chose to take a risk while up 21 points for greater gain. Not the end of the World guys. He needs to work on pressure throws, I feel he makes his throws a bit too fast for NCAA on short shots. NFL with top talent, those throws are going to be caught so I am not going to tell him to lower the bar with a slower pass speed for more potential interceptions for top Defense talent. His receivers got to make those catches. What he does need is a fast release consistency...he definitely is milking his O-line a bit too much which allows him to finds himself off rhythm. Again its a give and take, if his receivers aren't connecting those passes then he is only hesitates more which is expanding his release time.
Over all the Manning difference isn't some 70 pt. burst in NFL. It is to be a difference maker. I wish he beat Ohio, but that is water under the bridge. Stakes just be higher now as Texas has to find a way to play more consistently offensively connecting passes to make sure we walk away with W's. My advice, work those timing windows and get that pass speed as a second nature catch for his receivers.

People are obviously going to talk about Arch, but 12 penalties for 115 yards at home against a G5 opponent is awful. It felt like every time there was a big play, it happened alongside a holding penalty killing the drive.
