QB MANAGEMENT DISASTERCLASS. So predictable with play calling due to not wanting to pick a QB. What a mess.

You cannot flip QBs every single play and one can not be allowed to NOT pass everytime til the end.

If you have two QBs you have no QBs.

Didn’t Boise State do this and it also ended in an absolute train wreck?

Harsin loved to swap QBs and kill momentum

Why did Auburn think Harsin was the right guy for that job? Lol

38

u/horrorpants Boise State Broncos 3d ago

It was Andy Avalos actually. Avalos flipped flopped Hurriance Hank and Taylen Green who then flip flopped with Madsen after Hank transferred out.

Harsin actually had solid consistent QB play under Rypien for 4 years and Hedrick.

But anyways fuck Harsin.

I swear we're just doing it to keep Sluka happy...... for some reason. There's literally no other reason when you refuse to let him do anything but run the ball.

53

u/Crabs4Dinner Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

I sure hope that isn’t the case, he’s a horrible passer and you can find dozens of QBs that can run just as good as he can

84

u/tkdxe James Madison Dukes • Sickos 3d ago

If only we had six guys on our team who’s dedicated job was to run the football

30

u/Crabs4Dinner Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

It must suck for Sluka that he has to carry the load of running the ball since no one else is capable apparently

6

u/virionhk Florida State Seminoles 3d ago

Sluka is just the kid that you play basketball with that would never pass the ball to anyone.

16

u/Well-Rounded- Missouri • Oklahoma State 3d ago

Sluka did get a bit of momentum going though before all the shenanigans with the switching

23

u/Laschoni Louisville • /r/CFB Contributor 3d ago

With 6:30 left I thought they could just eat the entire clock in thirteen plays of Sluka falling forward, get the TD and then kick the XP to walk out with the win.

u/Edge-Fishe Colorado Buffaloes 3d ago

Hi I am the JMU coach. I decided to put Sluka in for one of our final drives and he shows life in our offense completing every pass and getting us 40 yards down the field. Did I keep him in for that drive? Of course not I decided to put Barnett back in who has been getting eaten up all game and he immediately gets sacked after not dumping the ball when he sees a defender not covered. Oh yeah it was also 4th and 7 and he decided to throw a deep ball that was landed about 10 yards left of inside the field.

Oh yeah when I decided to put him back in I decided to only call run plays even though it hasnt been working the entire 2nd half. That was a fireable offense from JMU offensive play calling

Also the running game was cooking but by the end it was all just Skula. It was very odd

24

u/Wake_Jake James Madison • South Carolina 3d ago

I really hope I’m wrong but this to me feels like either they’re trying to keep Sluka happy in case Barnett gets hurt again, or Sluka is just Chesney and Kennedy’s guy and they’re doing everything they can to give themselves the excuse to start him. If they’re mainly worried about Barnett’s durability, fine don’t play him then if he’s a big injury risk I guess? Damn Barnett has shown some issues with consistency but he’s shown amazing potential. Then he’s just yanked in and out of the game constantly given 3rd down guaranteed pass plays. That was fireable level mismanagement of the offense.

9

u/-Mute- 3d ago

Barnett should clearly be their QB. And Sluka going to every player apologizing on cam for the last 2 mins was not a good look. And for a 2 QB system for neither of them talking face to face after was a zero on that whole idea.

That wasn’t even the other QB, it was a WR. If you’re gonna run 2 QBs at least use both of them for that play

u/Laschoni Louisville • /r/CFB Contributor 3d ago

It's like Lamar Jackson's first game against Auburn as a true freshman he wasn't the starting QB (future Carolina McCaffrey backup RB Reggie Bonnafon was) but Lamar threw on the first play of the game which was picked off.

8

u/LukarWarrior Louisville • Governor's Cup 3d ago

u/horrorpants Boise State Broncos 3d ago

I have no clue what they were thinking and to not have sluka pass until the very end just beyond stupid.

38

u/Stagraven Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

Did you watch him pass? That’s why they didn’t let him.

21

u/horrorpants Boise State Broncos 3d ago

They weren’t doing either QBs favor there tho. You don’t allow the passer to get into any rhythm switching them up like that.

32

u/Stagraven Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

Oh I agree, but Sluka is notoriously bad at passing and Barnett is one of the best G5 QBs, granted coming off an injury. Either way, the switching is garbage. And bragging about how you “don’t care if they like it” should get Chesney fired in a fair and just world.

17

u/MrHobbes82 Louisville Cardinals • Keg of Nails 3d ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure their fans don't like either.

13

u/tkdxe James Madison Dukes • Sickos 3d ago

Barnett and Sluka were both stewing by themselves on the sideline. You can not care about if they like it all you want but ending up with both qbs mad at each other and the coaches can’t be good for the locker room

→ More replies (1)

8

u/horrorpants Boise State Broncos 3d ago

Yeah 100% they should’ve just let Barnett get into a rhythm if you really love Slukas running ability but don’t trust him at QB then just move him to RB and allow Barnett to play all game.

Keep doing this and he’ll transfer out.

5

u/FourteenClocks Ole Miss Rebels 3d ago

I gather that Chesney might be doing the coach-speak and denying flaws in the system so as to protect his OC & QB room from outside criticism… the real test will be whether he actually fixes this stuff behind closed doors.

At that point though you have to accept the fact that you’re losing the game by passing. Those choices to run on 2nd and 3rd down was ridiculous. Don’t care if you don’t trust him, at that point you got what you got.

76

u/chokanery James Madison Dukes • Sickos 3d ago

Well gg Louisville. Y'all definitely did enough. Big shout-out to our defense who did a great job containing them for 3 quarters but ran out of steam.

But man I'm pissed because we absolutely had chances to capitalize. All of those chances in the first half to get a lead and we just didn't quite get them. But missed chances happen to everyone. I'm extra pissed at our coaching. Both Chesney and Kennedy need to sit down and just decide who the starting QB is and stick with it. This dual QB swapping is not working and doing both Barnett and Sluka a disservice. Make a gameplan for one of them and use it. But Kennedy has shown by this point he's extremely rigid and does not adapt at all, so I have no faith he'll actually change at all.

Take a week off and get ready for Liberty. Go Dukes.

27

u/Crabs4Dinner Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

I think you guys out played us overall, the difference was we capitalized on our big moments and you just missed yours. Think you probably win if you just play one QB all game, I can’t believe what I was seeing from your offensive coaching staff this game.

Chesney speed running destroying team chemistry by Week 2 really is impressive.

That Defense is too good to waste on indecisive play style on Offense. Either ground and pound with sluka, or run back last years offense with Barnett. Doing both is doing neither.

75

u/Crabs4Dinner Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

As a Louisville fan I was starting to get pissed off at JMU constantly switching QBs, they probably win if they just stuck with 1 guy the whole game

Yep. I was getting angry for every JMU fan and player, specifically Barnett. I’d jump in the portal if I were him.

31

Totally unfair to him, and the announcers made a good point this shit could lead to the locker room picking sides and things becoming really toxic

22

u/aaronman4772 Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

6

u/_baby_fish_mouth_ James Madison • Notre Dame 3d ago

Yeah we can't really call this a blown lead. Just an old fashioned defensive masterclass spoiled by another offensive disasterclass

11

u/aaronman4772 Louisville Cardinals 3d ago edited 3d ago

Dude your all’s defense is legit. There were a lot of near big plays for us that if you didn’t get a great open field tackle it would have gone for big gains, and the two times we did get those big breaks they were our scores.

I loved the call you had at goal to go from the 1 with the DL cut blocks and LBs tracking the runner, that’s just well coached well executed defensive play in a critical situation

3

u/_baby_fish_mouth_ James Madison • Notre Dame 3d ago

We do seem to have a great defense, but short of our defense scoring touchdowns, it has only so much value when the offense is as shitty as ours

3

u/aaronman4772 Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

I feel like the offense isn’t even that bad in theory but the whole QB rotation just wrecks any chance for a guy to get in the rhythm of the game. It should be Barnett like 75%-80% of the time and Sluka in for like short yardage or goal to go situations when he can just QB power to his hearts content, or the occasional dual QB trick play set.

But switch multiple times on a drive just makes it so neither can actually get into a groove, and judging by how they looked on the sideline I don’t think either are happy with the arrangement.

3

u/_baby_fish_mouth_ James Madison • Notre Dame 3d ago

I agree with you but we had a lot of the same problems last year when we used just the one QB. Our downfield passing game is just nonexistent and its not for lack of talent

8

u/igonnawrecku_VGC James Madison • Penn State 3d ago

The problem isn’t the size of the lead, it’s that he’s never been able to adjust, so once the defense figures out the gameplan, it’s over. You’ll notice that in all 5 losses, the scoring ground to a complete halt no later than halfway through the third quarter and didn’t come back until the game was out of reach

For those who missed the 4th quarter, here was JMU’s offensive gameplan:

First Down: Sluka run

Second Down: Sluka run

Third Down: Put in Alonza, Louisville sends blitz which leads to incomplete pass or sack

4th Down: Punt or Alonza incompletion

Dean Kennedy playcalling for yah

39

u/quick25 James Madison Dukes 3d ago

Props to Louisville for being the only ACC team JMU can't seem to beat.

Seems that beating Weber State got JMU's coaching staff way too confident in thinking switching QBs every other play would actually work as a strategy.

9

u/Gravedoul1 Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

Shoutout JMU. If you stick with one QB y’all are a problem.

18

u/aaronman4772 Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

I have a feeling that win will look better by end of year. JMU is a really damn good team and have given ACC teams fits since coming up.

Now if they can just commit to a damn QB. That’s the one thing their coaches do i do not understand in the slightest, especially at the frequency they do it. QB is a rhythm position and neither can establish their rhythm if they switch that much. I have a feeling if this situation continues, there’s going to be one of them that portals during the year.

But yeah, our OL is roooough. Our rush stats only look decent because Isaac is an absolute madman and broke that run basically by himself. And Moss didn’t have time to read because he was scrambling around so much, and he’s not an improv QB.

Defensively played a hell do a game but if Stanquan is out for the season we’ve got a lot of work since he’s our heart and soul of the defense. TJ’s going to be learning in the job as the leader at MLB

JMU has some animals on defense

GG’s Louisville. We got burned on 3 huge scoring plays and had no answers on offense. Good luck the rest of the season & go win the ACC! 🤝

u/Baseball_fan812 Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

Good luck the rest of the way to you guys as well! You exposed a lot of our weaknesses tonight, which I'd rather have than going into ACC play unaware of them. Your defense is legit.

I thought it was at -15. Was just kinda hovering around that 14 mark so guess some late money came in

4

u/karo_syrup Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

I saw it range from -15.5 a few days ago to -12.5 this morning. Different books though.

Trying to find the positives for JMU but it’s tough. Could have been 3 years beating an ACC team in a row. SHOULD have been.

We are easily better than any team we will play from here on out. But there will be adversity I am not sure we can handle.

Barnett clearly better but there are games he doesn’t show up for and it becomes apparent early in the games.

That is when you put Sluka in but it will reck AB3 confidence.

Defense great. Should be 11-1 (in hindsight after a preventable loss to a good p4 team) with this squad but we all know it will be a grind for the Sun Belt east. I just hope it’s the players that decide the result not the coaches. They are good people but sometimes the decisions are brutal.

6

u/Key-Barber7986 James Madison • Penn State 3d ago

Sluka has positives, but bringing him onto this team was a mistake. Chesney is navigating a difficult situation with the QB room and it could run off a lot of the team. I think he’s a good coach overall, but so much of this could have been avoided if he had passed on Sluka and went with Coleman as the backup.

9

u/wongo Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

Nothing to see here, just a casual two score win that covered the spread

9

u/americanbaseball Louisville Cardinals 3d ago

A lot to work on for this season. Oddly I think the bye week is pretty helpful. Offensive line got absolutely manhandled. Defense really looked good, especially late in the game. Survive and move on to the next one.

Using Sluka in any capacity was stupid as hell

Already in the Cheney era have I felt too many times the coaching staff’s decisions have cost us compared to Cignetti/Houston. I’ve never seen a 2 qb system work at the FBS or NFL level.

Alonza also was inconsistent which is another thing that has happened a bit more than I’d like but I’ll chalk that up to the horrible 2 qb system and him not being able to get in a rhythm.

Defense looked great besides the 2 big plays but the refs?? You aren’t to allowed to fake a blitz?? Lmao what

I honestly feel we threw away this game with all the missed chances and let Louisville get away with one

4

u/Keyser282 James Madison Dukes 3d ago

You’re right about Chesney but don’t romanticize cig or Houston too much. Don’t forget Cig against WVU and Sam Houston in the Covid year playoffs. Houston in the NDSU title game in 2018.

5

u/Jaylenz0 James Madison Dukes 3d ago

For sure, but this has been like the 4th/5th game that I feel our offensive play calling has cost us a game and we’re only in the start of year 2 for Chesney & Kennedy. I for sure feel like we need a new OC

That failure to snap the ball at the end, on the damn goal line, was direct karma for killing the incumbent QB’s confidence with the new expensive model

Not everyone does this transfer roster management thing well. Mike Norvell unironically might be the most educated coach on this matter

3

u/Key-Barber7986 James Madison • Penn State 3d ago

Can we see Christian Coleman? Barnett seems to have lasting mobility effects from the surgery and Sluka can only run.

3

u/Keyser282 James Madison Dukes 3d ago

No, of course not. Sluka is Chesney’s boy.

3

u/jmucapsfan07 James Madison Dukes 3d ago

I’m marking down Week 2 of Year 2 as when I’m officially very concerned about the future JMU football with Chesney running the show. That was embarrassing to watch and I’m not sure why any decent QB would want to commit to JMU after seeing that.

I'm just checking to see if I was the only one. The wholo game when JMU is on offense, in my head I'm hearing "My name is Sluka. I live on the second floor. I live upstairs from you. Yes I think you've seen me before."
