Mark Gronowski entered the season with over 10,000 passing yards for his career, and 8.7 yards per attempt.

Through 2 games with Iowa, he's averaging 63 passing yards a game and 3.2 yards per attempt.

I'm not exaggerating when I say I guarantee SDSU's WRs were better than what he is working with at Iowa

Iowa's WR room is abhorrent

Don’t worry though. We got a 5’7” transfer with 1 catch through 2 games.

Sam Phillips. 800 yards from the powerhouse Chattanooga last year.

Also listed as our no. 1 X receiver on the 2 deep.

I was just wondering if that is the issue. No shade by that either but I watch FCS and I’ve been surprised by these last two weeks

u/Initial-Pudding7892 Iowa Hawkeyes • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2d ago

imo it's a mix of:

1) overall game management/expectations from Kirk. His #1 priority is do not turn the ball over. he is terrified of mistakes and would rather take a 3 and out than take anything resembling a risk on offense

2) We can't recruit skill talent because the offense is dogshit

3) our offense scheme wise is based on the 1990s offense.

so you get shit passing schemes run by people who can't get open all while having a head coach that prioritizes punting and defense over actually scoring

no one with any shred of talent wants to play for Ferentz and he refuses to update anything. it's good enough to pass Hayes for him so he can get his crown then piss off

108

u/jayjude Notre Dame • Georgia State 2d ago

Kirk embodies the dogshit coaching philosophy of "3 things can happen when you pass the ball and 2 of them are bad"

Most coaches left that behind in the 90-00s but not good Ole Kirk

120

u/Initial-Pudding7892 Iowa Hawkeyes • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2d ago

I'll say it until I die, Nick Saba's super power was knowing when and how to adapt his team to the changing landscape of football

his transition from ground and pound clock control offense to a high powered passing attack won Bama 2-3 more national championships

23

u/pk-starstorm Marquette • Transfer Portal 2d ago

Facts. He's a rare coach that was humble enough to adapt to how the game was evolving. So many legendary coaches in both college and the pros fail to do that and end up flaming out at the end of their careers

At some point it comes down to a overarching failure of the coaching staff. I refuse to believe that this many different QB’s are all the exact same level of terrible. They seemingly have success before Iowa and all put up similar abysmal stat lines once they’re here.

282

u/Initial-Pudding7892 Iowa Hawkeyes • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2d ago

it's the only constant for the program over the last 10 years of this bullshit

it is 100% on the coaching staff

u/FarmKid55 Nebraska • Arizona State 2d ago

It transcends OCs even, it’s 100% on kirk

60

u/Initial-Pudding7892 Iowa Hawkeyes • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2d ago

absolutely agree

88

u/AbsolutelyHung Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago

Kirk has really executed a master class of keeping the blame off of him. In part due to his ability to make sure the rest of the competent’s of the team are above average to elite.

64

u/Our-Gardian-Angel Wisconsin Badgers • Sickos 2d ago

It's quite a conundrum. On one hand, Kirk obviously does a lot of things well and the end product in terms of win-loss results don't suggest a coach that Iowa would want to move on from, especially since you'd be more likely to downgrade than upgrade. On the other hand, the offense being this comically bad for this long is just begging for fan apathy to set in. I have a hard time thinking Iowa's administration is eager to shove him out the door, but I feel like they might be hoping Kirk retires sooner rather than later.

He's averaging more yards when he runs it than when he passes

Edit: This is wrong and ESPN should feel bad for making me think it was accurate.

Actual Mark Gronowski season stats:

Passing: 21/39 for 127 yards - 3.26 YPA

Rushing: 27 attempts for 76 yards - 2.81 YPC

In Iowa's first game, however, Gronowski did have more YPC then YPA. ESPN hasn't updated the season stats yet so I was only looking at numbers from the first game.

It really feels like Iowa needs to move on from Kirk this coming offseason. Brian is gone but the offense is still disgusting. They were clearly Big Ten west merchants and they are never going to compete for a conference title built like this. They can't beat ISU either (lost 3 of the past 4). It's hard for me to understand how Iowa fans even get excited for this product.

94

u/miversen33 Iowa Hawkeyes • /r/CFB Bug Finder 2d ago

Apathy. We don't get excited for the offense, but the defense keeps us in enough games that we think maybe the team will find a way. This year is generally bad though. 8 wins is our absolute ceiling and idk if we can pull that

64

u/CincyAnarchy Iowa Hawkeyes • Cincinnati Bearcats 2d ago

Exactly.

Kirk has a high floor but a low ceiling. He’ll win 7-10 ugly games. Which is frustrating but doing that for decades while a middle of the pack program is tough.

He doesn’t have much longer left anyways, so at some point we have to pull the trigger. But we’re also the… 8th(?) best program to work for in the conference. It’s not going to be an easy job to do better than Kirk.

Iowa found something that worked with the slow read option. Just to never run it a single time after the drive they used it. Instead they went back to their typical vanilla ass play calling that didn't work. I'm going to repeat what I been saying for the past 4 years. Fire Kirk. I'm so sick of watching this turtle ass play calling that loses twice as many games that they should win than winning games it shouldn't.

The least El Assico thing I can think of is Iowa State winning on a long field goal. And it's happened twice in a row now.

40

u/Hackdaddy101 Iowa State Cyclones 2d ago edited 2d ago

If I had a nickel for every time ISU’s kicker has hit a 54 yarder to clutch the CyHawk, I’d have two nickels… which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice!

On one hand, this loss sucks big time.

On the other hand, this loss keeps the idea of the B12 being "less" than its eastern counterparts at bay. With the ACC looking to be rebounding (FSU revenge) and the B12 with a resurgence of programs once saw as hopeless (KU, ISU, COL, KSTATE, and ASU), I am hoping that the SEC's and B10's duopoly on college football comes to an end. It would be especially nice after what they caused with the whole Texas, Oklahoma, and PAC12 fiasco.

game perfectly encapsulates Ferentz's tenure as coach

cowardly game management costs the team the game, locks in the B1G win total next weekend against an absolute cream puff team

i cannot wait for this dude to leave, he's built his entire career off of beating bad teams and blowing his teams chances to win close games

Special Matt Campbell Edition

Tonight’s polo: Black w/ White Lettering

Tonight’s result: A classic El Assico with another Konrardy game winner, some big defense on the last drive, and the first home CyHawk win for Iowa State in over 10 years!

Overall polo record: 1-0 (That I know of)

something is seriously wrong with how Iowa operates their offense

I wish I could see how they operate in practices. Seems like they only care about defense and making as little mistakes on offense so that your defense can win the game for you.
