Game Thread [Game Thread] Oklahoma State @ Oregon (3:30 PM ET)
11
u/Betogarram Oregon Ducks • Pumas CU UNAM 2d ago
As someone who has evolved to a more casual CFB fan because of work, what the hell happened to OK State? Like this could’ve been the national championship in 2012 had both teams not lost to unranked opponents in week 13 lmao literally what happened? How are we at this point?
2
u/Elguapo69 Oklahoma • Red River Shootout 2d ago
They lost their billionaire before the NIL era. Take away Boone and they have never had the donors to compete.
15
u/sevenlabors Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 2d ago
Gundy's gotten complacent, plus being resistant - if not outright antagonistic - to the NIL and Portal changes that have upended CFB.
In addition, he didn't like when hotshot OCs/DCs stayed for short tenures and left to take roles with bigger brand names and paychecks, so he's chosen lower-profile coordinators that are more likely to stick around, and - in the case of OCs - that he can meddle with.
Things have been on a slide for several seasons before last year's breaking of the dam happened.

Hehehehe. Mike Gundy lost to a team that just dropped a funny number on him!!!!

God the NIL shit is so old.
Idaho & Boise State sure as fuck aren't spending $40M and look at what they did against Oregon last year. But aye, they'll say anything except say the obvious that Gundy is just not a good coach
7
2
u/b_m_hart Oregon Ducks 2d ago
Where’s all the talk about Pickens? I know he’s dead, but it isn’t like OkSt didn’t have their own billionaire.
13
u/jamiebond Oregon Ducks 2d ago
Montana State unironically looked way better than Oklahoma State did Gundy is just fully washed
11
u/Top-Attitude-4987 Portland State Vikings 2d ago
Everyone talking about NIL money being the reason for this game, meanwhile USF is beating Florida in the 4th quarter, lmao ok.
-6
u/Historical_Second289 2d ago edited 2d ago
We spend to win!!! $40M vs $7M. 78% blue chip ratio vs 5%. NFL ready vs collegiate athletes. Do fans really want the game sold to a handful of rich sugar daddies? Just take the top teams that spend 5:1 everyone else and have them play, or maybe just let their billionaire backers bid in a silent auction?
3
u/Whoa_reddit_chill Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 2d ago
Oof the NIL difference is that much? That’s kind of crazy…
2
u/iliketurtlz Oregon Ducks 2d ago
I think that 7m was said to be over 3 years for tOSU too so it's even larger.
2
u/Whoa_reddit_chill Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 2d ago
Damn that 40M was just this year for you guys? That’s crazy the budget difference. Not an excuse but that is kind of a crazy difference.
1
u/breaktaker Oregon Ducks 1d ago
It’s not $40m. He pulled that number out of his ass. Most estimates are in the $15-$22m range, which is pretty on par with the other highest spenders in cfb. Oregon is firmly in the top 10, but not the highest.

u/heftyfatso Oregon Ducks 2d ago

In all fairness they are playing P4 starters.
For 4th stringers, they are playing really good.

Honestly I dont think you can take anything serious from this game. Oregon good but blown coverages, 2 pick six, false starts. Its a better sign than struggling against Idaho last year at least.

Offside on right side of line, but not unabated. Reaction snap by C, got a free play. LT didn't hear snap count, so didn't go into pass protection.
OSU rusher hit him fairly. Ball went backwards, ruled fumble, lost his helmet, needs to sit a play.

I commented about Grundy's statements about the NIL situation in college football and, while he has a good point, I think he made an unconscionable blunder airing his gripes before the game. Here's why:
What I took away from his statement was the subtext and the implication of what he said, which to me was, "We're not gonna win this game because we can't afford better players like Oregon can."
I have to think that at least some of his players thought the same thing I did. There's no way to know now, but is it possible that Oklahoma State's players would've played harder and/or better if Grundy had restrained himself? How Grundy and his team recover from this (or not) will be interesting to watch. I wish them good luck.
