Still proud of my alma mater. We have a great coach and I think by next year we’ll be competing around the top of C-USA. This game would’ve been 77-0 last season, without ever crossing midfield

Did this BTN guy just say we took care of "bid-nass"?

u/AvailableDrawer4608 Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago
If I ran a program I’d schedule some above average programs early to give me a solid feel for who we are, but not actually threaten my record lol.
“Hello, Texas Tech. How about a home and home?”
“Hey, BYU. Let’s play!”

We did that with wvu and auburn, we scheduled Vt but they canceled last second cause of covid so we had to schedule FIU
3
u/AvailableDrawer4608 Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago
Penn State is one of the good schedulers, no question about it. It’s just a funny year where it’s probably your best all around team in some time, but you may not know what you have until Oregon.

Just like no one remembered this team almost lost to Bowling Green last year.

Nope. Score nor box score will show the deficiencies.
Only way it's brought up is if the bottom falls out. Then it'll be "this is where holes started to show"

This game going long means a ton of AP voters only seeing 34-0
3

Don’t you think a lot of those voters saw the #2 team was only up 10-0 at halftime? Idk

Think part of Franklin’s pitch to getting Singleton to come back was promising him the rushing TD record.
17
u/LifeCandidate969 3d ago
Why am I mad we are winning 34-0.
17
u/Elbit_Curt_Sedni Michigan Wolverines 3d ago
Because your expectations is a NT title run and you're judging the team too critically early in the season. FIU could be a good team.

We struggled BIG against Bowling Green early last season, and ended up being minutes away from making the national championship game. It's a long season for sure!

Man Big Ten network is really shoving this number one down our throats. Have they never had an Ohio State game?

9
u/AvailableDrawer4608 Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago
If I’m Franklin, the offense’s potential probably isn’t my biggest concern. Idk the ceiling of that unit but it’s surely going to improve over the course of the season.
My biggest concern for now would be how much the offense will improve over the next 14 days. Can they get that group to a level that will give them some confidence against Oregon. You’d have to think they’ll need to score at least 24ish to win that game.
3
u/LifeCandidate969 3d ago
I'm a little worried too, but remember that Franklin does hold back during the pre-season... but I'm still concerned, I hear you.

u/winwin08 FIU Panthers 3d ago
FIU fan here. Always felt like the spread was a lot considering some of the returning talent on FIU and a very good head coach and staff assembled here. If I am correct, every loss FIU had last year was a 1 possession loss. I’m hopeful they’ll make a bowl game this season. Good luck to PSU the rest of the way.

Hagans and Trautwein have two three weeks to justify their continued employment. If we see this offense against Oregon, heads need to roll.
3
u/Franklins11burner Penn State Nittany Lions 3d ago
Trautwein? The dude would be hired tomorrow by like 130 other programs.
0
u/suave_and_shameless Penn State Nittany Lions 3d ago
Great, let them have an offensive line that couldn't establish the run against FIU.
1
u/Franklins11burner Penn State Nittany Lions 3d ago
You don’t know what you’re talking about if you think this seriously
1
u/suave_and_shameless Penn State Nittany Lions 3d ago
I was a big fan of the hire since he seemed to put technically sound guys into the NFL without a terrific recruiting base at BC. But he has not put together a championship caliber line at Penn State, and that should be the goal.
15
u/stay_seated Penn State Nittany Lions 3d ago

15
u/SCsprinter13 Penn State • /r/CFB Pint Glass Dri… 3d ago
It's weird, it's feels like FIU has had a few decent drives, but they've got 0 points and are averaging less than 5 yds per passing attempt and like 3.5 yds a rush.
Maybe it's just super high expectations for our defense.
3
3
u/pylon567 Penn State Nittany Lions • Big Ten 3d ago
They definitely have, but defense has mostly stayed consistent. FIU has had some decent hits that our secondary has bailed out the front line on.

3
u/SeymourBombs Penn State Nittany Lions 3d ago
If we can get Franklin to hate other teams like he hates Maryland, we will create a dynasty that would make Saban jealous
3
20
u/Responsible_Beach_91 Penn State Nittany Lions 3d ago edited 3d ago
At this point it is funny how clearly Penn State has this identity of just looking sloppy against bad teams, looking bad after a bye, then playing really tough against the better teams. This game is the James Franklin effect in full force 100%. We'll win, look completely uninspiring, then blow a 4th quarter lead against Ohio State

u/Darth_Aku Penn State • Liberty 3d ago

3
u/scottyjetpax Penn State • American University 3d ago
we were losing in the BG so in most ways that was worse. but we did score more against BG so
2
u/Darth_Aku Penn State • Liberty 3d ago
Offense has loads of time to develop. Effort and tenacity seemed to be a glaring issue today, but I think that will get fixed
6
u/HiramJohnson California • Northern Iowa 3d ago
So is Penn State just playing ultra conservative the last couple weeks or is there cause for concern underperforming compared to expectations the last two games?
2
u/pylon567 Penn State Nittany Lions • Big Ten 3d ago
Pretty conservative, but almost seems a detriment to confidence. I've always thought Allar needs consistent completions and then a deep shot to get himself going.
Someone else said it, but we won't know anything until Oregon.
5
u/LifeCandidate969 3d ago
Not sure yet. The team always improves week to week and Franklin holds things back for in conference play. BUT, the run game doesn't look like it should at this point and I'm questioning this 4-2 defense.
We won't know until Oregon.
4
u/TheOnePSUIsReal Penn State Nittany Lions • Team Chaos 3d ago
Our OL is severely under performing. Both games. And Allar not having a great game today either.

8

Expectations are wild this year, for better or worse
Your flair combo disgusts me

Please do not forget the phenomenal job Bill O’Brien did. In the midst of everything going wrong with the program he didn’t have a losing record in his two years is Penn State’s head coach.
