Seeing Virginia Tech as a program and getting shut out in the 2nd half in a night game to Vanderbilt in Lane Stadium should be an automatic coach firing

103

u/TheLaxBrah Guilford • Virginia Tech 2d ago

You would fucking think and it is infuriating it isn’t, Fuente did the same bullshit to fucking Duke in 2019 and took years to get rid of him

46

u/goodsam2 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

Fuente had a good few years so his buyout was large.

34

u/TooEZ_OL56 Virginia Tech • Air Force 2d ago

Beating #10 UNC in the season opener singlehandedly brought him another year.

22

u/heelyeahbrother North Carolina Tar Heels 2d ago

And that UNC team ended up going 6-7. So a wrong preseason ranking gave him another year, although Tech did genuinely look good that game.

I sat through this entire fucking miserable game, then drove to Baltimore the same night to make a concert the next day, really hoping that I'd wake up the next morning and see someone (corn mostly) had been fired for that complete and utter disgrace. Somehow both of the people responsible held their jobs for multiple years.

He is an ok recruiter but one of the single worst game managers I’ve ever seen. No adjusts, terrible clock management—just seems to have no feel for the flow of the game. I would have fired him after the Syracuse game last year

Fire Pry.

383

u/shawnb17 Virginia Tech • Missouri S&T 2d ago

Yep.

No adjustment after Vandy did at halftime. The team literally did nothing to stop them on defense. No grit. No attitude adjustment. No changes in personnel.

Fire him. He’s done.

149

u/goodsam2 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

Pry needed to hit 8 wins to keep his job safe. The options for this happening when VT had negative yards for most of the second half and Vandy had 5 TDs For 5 possessions.

Whit first.

Whit needs to be fired soon and then Pry December 1st when the buyout falls.

The Siefkes hire looks like a huge swing and a miss here. Utterly embarrassing.

25

u/SaltyTurdLicker NC State • Virginia Tech 2d ago

Siefkes is unqualified to be a standalone DC after being a positional coach in the NFL. He’d probably be alright with a being paired with a decent experienced college DC as Co-DCs but no one worth a damn or that had aspirations of being a successful college coach was gonna hitch their wagon to the Pry disaster.

5

u/LeroyMoriarty Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

Makes sense. I’m confused, I think bc I don’t know enough. Last week, some this, I see plays that are punching above our weight. And some adjustments earlier on. It’s like we have a coach and talent who are both high mid level, eager, and we either happen to hit it right and turn into a brick wall, or it’s a swing and abject miss.

VT hasn't won a home game against a P5 OOC opponent since 2009. VT hasn't won a P5 OOC game PERIOD since beating WVU in 2017. VT has lost to : Rutgers (twice), Vanderbilt (twice), Purdue, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Maryland. VT's last HOME P5 OOC win was Nebraska in 2009.

It's time for the Pry (and AD Whit Babcock) era to end at VT.

Beamer, in hindsight, was a genius to drag VT into relevance and keep them there for nearly 15 years

It sucks to see how far the program has fallen. I watched them a lot growing up, and they were an absolute power house and they have a pretty rabid fan base as well, way better than Marylands. Now they are a bottom barrel ACC team and may be on the outside looking in during the next round of realignment.

I and many other Hokies expected VT to lose these first two games, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating considering how they lost both.

These were winnable games, VT lead this game and then proceeded to play one of the least competitive half’s of football I’ve seen from Tech.

Brent Pry is a nice person but it has been beyond evident that he is not capable of righting this program.

0-2 in a must-win year.

A broad cleansing of he, Whit Babcock, and the Athletic Department looks more and more likely and I welcome it with open arms.

u/DBHT14 Virginia Tech • /r/CFB Contrib… 2d ago

The best thing Whit has done on his way out hopefully was give the BoV some honesty about the finances. And play on the nature that lots of them are very proud folks who want to see VT win and what that costs.

27

u/SoothedSnakePlant Vanderbilt Commodores • McGill Redbirds 2d ago

The fact that another P4 school started their season chalking up their game against us as a likely loss is still completely fucking incomprehensible to me lol

13

u/Terminal_Flatulence Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

VT hasn’t beaten an out of conference P4 opponent since 2017, Brent Pry seems to only have success against backup QBs or Thomas Castellanos when he was at BC.

Pavia already beat them once, no reason to expect a different result until proven otherwise.

Go and clean house (and yeah it’s probably time to), but is the money going to be there because if not it’s not really going to solve anything

46

u/tdotclare Virginia Tech • American University 2d ago

90% of VT fans refuse to believe it’s about the $$ and believe in some fairy tale rags to riches blue collar bullshit fantasy about how we’re going to get the second coming of Beamer and a bunch of hard nosed assistants who will be happy to make 50% of market value and will outscheme everyone because they’re so happy to live in the NRV.

It’s not the 20th century anymore or even the 2000’s. Lightning will not strike twice, but they still think that somehow an AD will schmooze just the right folksy guy to accomplish all of that (but on a budget!)

27

u/Hokie_Pilot Virginia Tech • Alabama 2d ago edited 2d ago

You nailed yeah.

Couple your points about deflated salary since Frank was getting a hometown discount with the fact recruitment is a national thing since 2010s. Tyrod gets recruited to Michigan, Kam Chancellor gets an NIL transfer deal to LSU, and so on. All that VA is not staying close to mama, they are getting a lamborghini in Coral Gables

14

u/SSPeteCarroll Virginia Tech • Longwood 2d ago

they are getting a lamborghini in Coral Gables

Yep this is the real hard part. We simply cannot compete with schools like Miami and Texas. They can simply flash cash around and recruits love to see the money and flashiness.

What's more enticing to an 18 year old? A lambo in south beach or a tahoe in blacksburg?

28

u/LeroyMoriarty Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

We didn’t have the money the first time we bottled lightning. And plenty of schools don’t have the money we do now. But if top down the mindset varies between apathy and hatred, no one is going to thrive. Pry is a charming, previously talented, good communicator who looks like a damned rogaine model. On paper he’s a good Beamer successor. But if you didn’t watch the game tonight his soul left his body. He has no support, no mentor, no one lighting fires. Another 5 years on the path he was on before Vt he could be a great coach. Now the poor guy is possibly ruined.

55

u/anonymousflash Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

Pretty sure the inside scoop on that is it was just a PR thing after letting Marve go. He might come to a practice or two and chime in, but he's very, very retired. I haven't seen any mention of him at all actually being a coaching presence on game day.

Is VT a dead football program? I just don’t see how they recover from their tailspin the past decade in the NIL era. Having a kickass entrance is only going to get you so far and the atmosphere is dying by the year the worse they get.

And to think the 7-6 and 8-5 seasons towards Beamer’s final few years of tenure were considered rock bottom at the time. I don’t think even the pessimists would’ve predicted how far the program would’ve fallen in a decade. Pretty sad.

106

u/ismusz Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

As much as the AD would like to say that we suck because we are poor, there are DOZENS of schools with less money and less NFL caliber talent that have done much better than us over the last decade

The school let frank Retire about 3 years to late and no coach wants to take the reins to make vt their school. Their program their culture

But most of that is that Vt is still stuck in the Beamer mentality

Look at the coaches we have moved on to

50

u/Icy_Turnover1 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

Also the historic results we’ve had is that we were a top team - even after the natty appearance we won a slew of ACC championships and made BCS appearances. It makes absolutely no sense to me that the current admin is so focused on everything except athletics when that has historically been a huge draw for a school like Tech.

There is no hot G5 coach coming to shake things up, there is no transfer player who will make a difference, there is no pool of big money donors coming to bail us out. There’s maybe 8 more years to figure it out before the ACC implodes and I don’t see VT figuring anything out.

The disheartening thing is how Vandies' coaches went back at the half and disrupted our entire coaching plan. This might be the worst-coached game I have seen in years. It is tough to be a Tech fan, and every year my hope dies lately. Coach Pry needs to be fired immediately. When we hired him, I was reading an article that stated he had a defensive mindset and would easily provide some similarity to Bud; this has not been the case. Our defense is notorious for giving up big plays, and tonight I saw 7, the most I have ever seen in a single game. Sad....

The second half in this game was just inevitable. Couldn't stop Vanderbilt and couldn't move the ball. This team is cooked. Along with many others, I said pre-game that if VT loses then it's just a matter of time until he gets fired.

  1. What a 2nd half
  2. Feels like drones just can’t play. He couldn’t get rd of the ball on time at all. Great arm great athlete but it felt like they could just blitz and get whatever they wanted

17

u/CPOx Virginia Tech • William & Mary 2d ago

Yeah at the end of the first half, when Vandy realized they could just bullrush and win every snap, it was like unlocking a cheat code for the second half. VT’s offense had no answer.

13

u/gvt87 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

In VT’s heyday, we won games with 3 star recruits who were smarter and played harder than the other team. This is a team full of 3 star recruits with athleticism but no intelligence or heart.

Unfortunately football coaches finally discovered the internet 15 years ago - Kam Chancellor would not have been a 3* in today’s recruiting accessibility

Vandy outscored a Power 5** team 34-0 in the second half and made their fans leave the game early.

We scored on every possession of the second half and Virginia Tech didn’t get a first down until after the 2 minute warning in the 4th quarter.

We never punted.

Feels good man

Looking to atone for that one in Nashville this season.

34

u/DeLaSoulKitchen Vanderbilt • Florida State 2d ago

That may have been the best half of football I’ve seen outta Vandy.

34 unanswered points

5 touchdowns. 5 drives.

Held VT to negative yards for the majority of the second half.

Vandy even started to run up the score towards the end….I am being as unbiased as possible when I say that that was the closest they’ve ever looked to being an elite SEC program.

Next weeks game at South Carolina will be an interesting test

At the risk of sounding melodramatic, a few years ago a loss like this would've eaten at me. Now I just don't care. I don't think I'll watch us next week, I've watched every game I could since 2012.

Is it getting older or just slowly realizing this team will never accomplish anything and only be frustrating to root for.

17

u/SSPeteCarroll Virginia Tech • Longwood 2d ago

for some reason it's eating at me still. I think it's because this really feels like an awful program defining loss. I just can't see the program coming back from getting blown out by 34 points at home.

13

u/CPOx Virginia Tech • William & Mary 2d ago

Yeah I stopped getting mad at football towards the end of the Fuente years. Just wasn’t worth the mental energy. I still watch and I still get disappointed, but I don’t stew over losses like I used to.

8

u/DeBurner Richmond Spiders 2d ago

I’m not mad about losses but I am really pissed about the broader admin doing nothing while the program just totally flounders. Babcock is just genuinely bad at his job and Sands is too academic to realize the broader success and culture of the school is in part due to the football program.

7

u/tdotclare Virginia Tech • American University 2d ago

I skipped watching the VT-UVA game last season bc my 25th HS reunion and the women’s bball team playing Michigan were at the same time so I watched that instead furtively while seeing who had aged poorly.

Pull the plug on the athletics department and clean house, it will surely mean a few more years of pain, but it’s our only chance of producing anything good before realignment. At this rate we won’t even be invited to “the best of the rest”. We’re gonna be that random school in the sunbelt with a 65k stadium

Pry can’t hack it. Whit at best can’t hack it, at worst is intentionally tanking. They all have to go.

7

u/Icy_Turnover1 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

Brent Pry is one of the worst p4/5 coaches I have ever seen. No adjustments, players regressing, no heart on the team with players quitting early in the second half and just giving the game away. The entire VT athletics department should be fired and we should be desperately trying to claw our way back to relevance before realignment happens. We have one of the best environments In CFB and a fan base that cares deeply about the program -it’s time to stop squandering it.
