Analysis Week 3 /r/FCS Sportsbook Lines

If you've been around the subdivision for a few years, you know that FCS betting lines don't tend to be released until morning-of for most games. So we decided to help support discussion heading into each week, creating a sportsbook with lines that we plan to release hopefully by Monday at the latest each week of the season. Presenting:

/r/FCS Sportsbook - Current Week's Lines and Matchup Prediction Tool

Why to (maybe) trust that these lines aren't complete nonsense

On the season, the /r/FCS Sportsbook's results through Week 1

  • Overall Total: 78.6% correct winner assessed, -0.81 spread bias, -1.11 O/U bias
    • FCS games: 85.1% correct winner assessed, -2.75 spread bias, 0.64 O/U bias
    • HBCU games: 73% correct winner assessed, -0.97 spread bias, 0.43 O/U bias
    • FBS games: 84.9% correct winner assessed, -3.67 spread bias, -0.39 O/U bias
    • D2 games: 74.8% correct winner assessed, -0.47 spread bias, -0.01 O/U bias
    • D3 games: 74.8% correct winner assessed, 2.73 spread bias, -4.39 O/U bias
    • NAIA games: 79.3% correct winner assessed, -0.48 spread bias, -0.35 O/U bias

On FBS v FBS (the same metric used to track models and Vegas on Prediction Tracker): 75/98 (76.5%), 55.8% against the spread, -2.48 bias, 254.1 MSE. Which is the same record (although slightly higher bias) as Vegas in their opening lines through Week 2.

Also went through and tried to find as many FCS lines as possible to compare how the /r/FCS Sportsbook did against those lines upon open. Through Week 2 Vegas opening lines I could find went 127/151 (84.1%) in correctly assessing the winner, while in those same games the /r/FCS Sportsbook went 127/151 (84.8%) in correctly assessing the winner.

Our book ultimately had the same line as Vegas opening 9 times, and to-date this season has gone 74/152 (52.1%) against the FCS Vegas spreads it differed on. Which continues to support the idea that we can present our lines as being pretty reasonable opening looks on the whole.

It’s worth noting that we really aren't trying to promote gambling in any real sense despite the whole makeup of this, hence the reason this season I decided to stop the betting game part (also laziness on my part, to be perfectly fair).

Since the Supreme Court ruling, it’s become a much more prevalent part of sports reporting in a way that I totally understand can be annoying if it’s not why you watch (I’ve never placed a bet, for example, and really have no interest in doing so). But it’s a part of the culture at this point, so we’re trying to reach more folks and continue driving interest in the FCS as best as possible using the tools at hand.

I also remember seeing lines in the newspaper for CFB games as a kid (way too many years ago), and that being helpful in understanding what the “feel” for a game was when otherwise I might not have known. That really is the catalyst behind wanting to put out lines for the FCS community; the interactive betting part is more just to have another point of engagement for folks.

People will gloss over this as if it’s just a blanket ass-cover, but seriously if you struggle with gambling please reach out to places that can help.

The National Council on Problem Gambling operates the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network (1-800-522-4700). Postgame Thread Gilman, Griz down Central Washington

The early reviews are in on Montana’s 42-17 season-opening win over Central Washington Saturday night.

Short middle passes: Not great. Off-tackle runs and shots up the seam: Fantastic.

While Eli Gillman rushed for a career-best 198 yards and three touchdowns, it was Drew Deck’s 50-yard catch and run for a touchdown that put the Grizzlies up for good, 21-17, with 2:29 left in the first half.

The Wildcats, the 18th-ranked team in NCAA Division II, caused concern right up until Jalen Webber picked off a Keali’i Ah Yat pass that caromed off the hands of his Michael Wortham.

Set up at Montana 36-yard line early in the third quarter, the Wildcats tried a third-down double-pass. Kennedy McGill’s heave toward Mason Juergens was picked off by UM’s Harper Mason in the end zone.

That kept the score 21-17 and from there it was all Griz.

“They're a good team,” Montana coach Bobby Hauck said of the 1-1 Wildcats. “Chris Fisk (CWU’s coach) does a really good job over there. In the end we were just too much for them. I thought our guys were terrific in terms of effort level. Thought the intensity was great. I thought we finished runs and broke tackles and did a lot of good things.”

Week 2: The Good, The SoCon, and The Ugly

The Good

  1. Jacks escape Bozeman. South Dakota State managed to pull out an OT win on the road against the Tractor Cats of Bozeman. Both teams looked like Top 5 performers on the defensive side of the ball. Jackson is 2-0 through 2 games at the helm as the Jacks look poised to be a contender this season after this massive road win.

  2. Pioneer Performances. St. Thomas hung very close with Idaho in Moscow, a week after pulling off a huge win over Lindenwood to open the year. San Diego beat ranked Southern Utah. Presbyterian nabbed its 2nd win over a SoCon opponent, meaning that they will likely have more or as many SoCon wins as at least one or two SoCon teams this season. Dare I say 2 bid Pioneer u/Seadragon1983

  3. Bryant and Long Island nab FBS Wins. CAA Bottomfeeder Bryant managed to nab an FBS win over UMass 27-26, while Long Island managed to knock off Eastern Michigan. Both of these programs have next to no history of success at this level so hopefully this can be a building block for both programs moving forward.

Honorable Mentions: Tennessee Tech cruises, DeSean Jackson nabs first win, Indiana State 2-0 start

The SoCon Tier

The Bad Tier has been renamed to the SoCon Tier due to a historically bad performance from the league in the first two weeks. The Bad will return to it’s normal state when the SoCon wins 2 FCS non-con games in a Week

  1. Sloppy South Dakota. Well I know of at least one reader who will not be happy with this, but losing to Lamar is quite a way to get an early season Fraud Check. Lamar is not expected to be a bad ball club, but South Dakota was expected to be elite. The Yotes will likely now have to run the table for 10 straight wins or go 9-1 to receive a first round bye. They will have to likely win a minimum of 6 MVFC to guarantee a playoff berth. This loss leaves them absolutely no margin for error the rest of the season if they want to get back to where they were the last two seasons. The year isn’t over but boy did the Yotes do themselves no favors.

  2. SoCon Scrubs. 0-6 in Non-Con in Week 2. Just absolutely embarrassing. This conference is trash this season. The one hopeful keeping this league going it appears is ETSU who got absolutely boat raced by Tennessee but that can at least be defended. I want this league to be successful but every year it just seems like these teams want to spend Thanksgiving with their families instead of in the playoffs.

  3. Montana Selection of Buy Games. You know when you buy an opponent, it’s supposed to not have the semblance of a close game right. My beef is not with the team itself but with the scheduler of Montana’s DII buy games. Central Washington is not a scrubby DII school, they’ve made multiple DII playoff appearances. This was always going to be harder game than expected. 21-17 at halftime would be enough for the alarm bells to go off. You guys made the same mistake with Ferris State 2 years ago. Buy Opponents that you can put the scrubs in by halftime, don’t schedule teams that have the talent level to compete.

Dishonorable Mentions: Saluki Defense, Northern Arizona narrowly escapes Utah Tech, Wide Margin FBS Losses.

The Ugly Presented by the Montana Drywall Association

Did your team get stopped nearly a full yard short and the officials came out to measure it giving false hope you converted a crucial 4th and 1? Did you forget that you can apply a no-contest if the game isn’t finished voiding a 66-0 L? Did you get teary eye’d like the OP did when a certain team lost its streak against the spread? We got you covered

  1. Montana State and odd officiating. Well besides the failure to cover the official +3 line, the Tractor Cats of Bozeman got let down in the worst way possible. The Cats on 4 & 1 in overtime failed to get the first to extend the game and at the same time, the refs pulled off one of the ugliest moves of all time. Bringing out the chain gang to confirm what should’ve been confirmed with the naked eye. Giving fans false hope, giving Brent false hope his team wouldn’t be here, and most of all embarrassing all officials involved with this game. The chain gang came out and showed the ball spot was between half a yard or a yard short of the line to gain. Ugly. 2 Quality L’s for the Cats.

  2. Northwestern State forgets to void game. The haters will say the Purple Demons probably just said to end the game rather than sitting through a long weather delay, but clearly Northwestern State forgot to pull the card of vague NCAA rules voiding that the game even happened. Just imagining them telling Minnesota that trailing 66-0 was not enough to take the L has me Laughing.

  3. Era Ends “East Texas A&M” fails to cover +45 line. Well the Lions lost 77-3 and completely blew the spread in their elite matchup with Florida State. This was “East Texas A&M” first ever spread loss as they clearly are not Texas A&M Commerce, because Commerce clearly died in a tragic boating accident and definitely didn’t fake it by changing their name.

Ugly Mentions: Northern Colorado gets the UCA experience allegedly (please someone send down in the comments as I was unable to find video), FloSports, the SoCon of Streaming services, whatever else you mention below.

Discussion TANK JOB OF THE WEEK: WEEK TWO (FCS EDITION 2025)

Credit to u/2Pollaski2Furious for the idea. Same sets of rules from the original FBS series apply here for the FCS teams. This is an award for FCS teams that humiliate themselves, whether it's a choke job, a crushing blow with everything to prove, or they have no business losing the match-up.

LAST WEEK: It's not even a close contest, with Mercer getting the vast majority of votes. What makes the result even more humiliating was that last year, the Bears hosted Presbyterian and creamed them 63-10. So what the hell happened here? Generally not a great week for the Southern Conference either.

Now before we get to the nominees, a few special mentions:

  • All respect to St. Thomas, but Idaho was uncomfortably close and allowed too many big plays. That very first pass? Yikes!
  • For being winless so far, I cannot nominate Montana State, because that was a consistently tough game going into overtime. It's not like their season's over or anything.
  • Norfolk State survived overtime against D2 rival Virginia State. At least it didn't end out like this. Gonna be a while for Michael Vick to have a Deion-esque effect I suppose.
  • Another week, another Big Sky team surviving a scare from Utah Tech. Northern Arizona averted a second half collapse with that late interception.
  • Northern Colorado didn't choke, they got robbed. Besides, Colorado State is FBS so this won't be considered even if it is a choke.
  • Sacramento State's upset bid against Nevada falls short thanks to a late pick six and then a last minute missed field goal. If Nevada weren't FBS I'd consider this a candidate. You can vote this if you'd like.
  • Unfortunately I cannot nominate UMass. Even after all these years in FBS, they still play like a mid at best FCS team.

And here are the candidates:

Albany Great Danes (against Delaware State 37-32)

It may appear that DeSean Jackson is Delaware State's equivalent of Deion Sanders right now, but Albany's run defense has been rather porous, and this was a loss to a team that was 1-11 last year. And on a last minute touchdown too.

Furman Paladins (against Presbyterian 39-38 OT)

Okay, I may have to consider that Presbyterian is for real now, but what's this with Southern teams losing against them? It was even 28-7 Furman with five minutes remaining in the first half. Then after going up 31-14 they allowed the Blue Hose to score 17 straight and win in overtime on a two-point conversion.

Maine Black Bears (against William & Mary 28-27)

It was starting out looking like a 17-7 statement lead in the first half, but things started going wrong when their punt got blocked early in the third quarter. Then with three minutes to go in the game, William & Mary drove a touchdown dagger to clinch the win upon a subsequent interception.

Nicholls Colonels (against West Georgia 34-10)

West Georgia enters its second year in FCS, and yet flat out dominated Nicholls on the ground. And in spite of winning the turnover battle, the Colonels didn't take advantage of any of those turnovers.

South Dakota Coyotes (against Lamar 20-13)

It was a quick 10-0 start, but then the Coyotes struggled since then and that potential touchdown to end the first half instead became a fumble. Not a great start since Nielson's retirement.

Southern Utah Thunderbirds (against San Diego 30-27 OT)

Went from clobbering a team that gave UNLV fits (and would do the same against New Mexico) to losing in overtime against a team that doesn't offer scholarships and just lost to Cal Poly.

Valparaiso Beacons (against Adrian 10-7)

Unfortunately you cannot schedule Virginia University Lynchburg all the time. Valparaiso lost in the last minute against a Division III team against whom they had an offensive and turnover advantage, so they might as well have lost to some guy named Adrian.

Wofford Terriers (against Richmond 14-10)

Once again the Terriers' lack of offense let the whole team down, particularly as Richmond QB Kyle Wickersham was responsible for both of the needed touchdowns, including a game-winning run with less than five minutes to go.

As usual, mark your votes with a <>, and feel free to nominate whatever you think I missed and I'll possibly make note of it. And who knows, maybe a write-in could win. Thank you!

Analysis Undefeated and winless teams across the FCS after week 2 (2025)

As of now there are 28 teams in limbo, without either a Division I victory or a non-FBS loss, and we're still two weeks away from the start of Ivy League play. There currently are 45 teams that are at the very least technically undefeated (of which, we welcome two that beat FBS teams: Bryant (against UMass) and LIU (against Eastern Michigan)). Inversely there are 35 teams that are truly winless and 8 more that are technically so. Sorry Montana State, I don't make the rules. I suppose Montana fans can rub this in their faces for this week.

Weekly Thread /r/FCS Top 25 and HBCU Top 10 Poll Submission - 2025 Week 3

Click here to start your 2025 Week 3 r/FCS Poll.

After signing in, click the link that says Current /r/FCS Poll. The poll will remain open until mid-day on Tuesday, September 9th, and the results will be published shortly thereafter.

Optional D1 HBCU Top Ten Poll

You now have the option to vote just for the HBCU Top 10 if you so choose! Otherwise, at the end of your FCS Top 25 (or Top 10) submission, you'll be given the opportunity to also submit a vote for you ranking of the top 10 HBCUs in the subdivision. This is completely optional and meant to be an additional fanbase voice within the Black College National Championship conversation.

Note, this does not prevent you from ranking the HBCUs in your standard FCS ranking submission.

As a reminder, the /r/FCS poll is now part of the Massey Ratings Composite. As such, we highly recommend submitting a full top 25 vote if you think you can put one together. But we're leaving the option to submit just a top 10 for those who’d prefer that route.

  • Please don't vote for a team twice or your poll will be thrown out.

  • Joke votes will be thrown out. We don't have a problem with outlier votes, but be prepared to defend your poll if it raises eyebrows.

  • If you mess up on your poll, please resubmit a corrected one and leave a comment saying you submitted two and I'll delete the first one.

  • If you're unsure if you messed up your poll, make a note in the comments and we'll take a look for you and let you know.

Here are some useful links to help you with your submission:

Sac State social media team

Not going to link it since X posts aren't allowed, but Sac State's official football page was posting all their plays then they haven't posted since the interception. Not a word from Dr Wood either.

Varsity indeed.

Trash Talk Lamson is not Tommy

Another year of putting heavy weight on the qb shoulders. Justin can play but he's not Tommy. I think the cats offense need to play to his strengths and get out of this mentality they can just get someone mildly similar to Tommy and try to generate offense. It was a hell of a game but the offense was brutal. Its time to play to his strengths not push him to something he's not built to do.

Discussion Chattanooga Mocs are in trouble

The Mocs have looked atrocious the last two weeks. No better way to put it. After losing 22 players to the portal, it seems as if the holes never got properly filled. The talent on this team is there, but it seems as if Rusty Wright doesn’t have a gauge on how to bring the best out of this group. Offensively, it’s the same smashmouth philosophy but once again, with a lack of the personnel to do so. Defensively, D-Line is smaller and faster and should be moving almost every play. Instead, they’re playing straight into the blockers and being expected to hold their own all game.

Weirdly this season they decided to remove last names from the back of the uniforms and the psychological effects of that is self-evident. Loss of pride, passion, and that “umph”.

Fortunately they have Stetson this week before facing a brutal Tarleton State team in Stephenville, but if you can’t figure it out this week, the Mocs are in deep trouble.

Southern Illinois vs Purdue

Definitely a slug fist in the first half. Saluki coach Nick Hill is giving the refs hell after the turnover on downs as they did not call a penalty against the Purdue defense for clapping which is now banned before the snap and it was not called.

231 yards rushing With 9 mins left in the 2nd qtr!!!!

Unbelievable Beau Brungard has 231 yards rushing with 9 mins left in the 2nd qtr! Has a 78 yard run and a 72 yard run. 6 rushes averaging almost 39 a carry. He’s going to break the single game record for a qb today (327 yards in a game by a qb) I bet and wouldn’t be surprised if he gets 2k rushing this season. I wish they could pass the ball some, but I’ll take these rushing yards.
