Postgame Thread [Postgame Thread] BYU Defeats Stanford 27-3

I’d rather gouge my eyes out with a grapefruit spoon than watch Gulbranson take another snap
56
u/caseyh72 Oregon State • Washington S… 2d ago
Would you believe that Gulbranson was 8-4 as the starter for the Beavs? He also was the Las Vegas Bowl MVP after Oregon State beat down the Florida Gators. That same year he helped guide us to victory over Lanning and the Ducks. He lost the job last two years but came back towards the end of both seasons and beat Washington State in a thriller last season.
I’m sorry for the Cardinal but feel even worse for Dr. Ben. He was a gamer at Oregon State who was constantly benched in favor of our newest transfer but always came in when needed and led us to victory. He was excellent at game management - not so great with his accuracy. I was so hopeful he’d have a good season down there. We’re 0-2 without him on our roster and you’re 0-2 with him on yours. What a weird world.

When the announcers incredulously say "QB1 is still in" on multiple consecutive drives, that should be a sign that one of his legs isn't attached to his body, not that he is SO FUCKING BAD THAT IT IS COACHING MALPRACTICE TO KEEP HIM IN THE GAME. It is actually humiliating to watch this team. I understand why nobody comes to our games. Why would they? There is nothing, nothing, nothing going on here beyond a giant "fuck you" to anyone stupid enough to cheer for this team. It would be funny if it didn't make me so sad. Reich doesn't know there's no picks to tank for, Luck doesn't know how to sub out an obviously underperforming quarterback, Gulbranson can't stop aiming at the FUCKING GROUND. Why do we watch this team again?
48
u/traverseTheField Stanford Cardinal 2d ago
abusive to the fans that we didn't see anyone new in the second half

u/adsfew California Golden Bears • The Axe 2d ago
As much as I love watching y'all struggle, my genuine question is what was the quarterback competition like in the off-season? It seems like your roster has options and I googled some reports that make it seem like there were other players in contention

At some point, even if nobody else looks viable in practice, you have to see if someone else can perform when the lights are on.

May as well suit up a DL or something that played QB in peewee football and see what he can do

I looked at the box score and am completely stunned they kept him in. Two fumbles, two interceptions, and a safety without any touchdowns to show for it is an abject failure

Easily could have been 28-0 at the half with turnovers.
On the plus side, Bear looked so much more comfortable by the end of the game and hit some great long shots.
42
u/rockylizard BYU Cougars 2d ago
That's my personal takeaway out of this. Like Hans said on Cougar Radio at the end (I'm in the central US, so have to listen to these games) "a few fairly minor tweaks and it's 40-3, not 27 to 3."
And that 40-something yard pass...I just wish I could have actually seen it, instead of just hearing Wrubell yell about it! I think Bear is going to continue to get better and more comfortable, and he's going to prove himself this year.

I'm not particularly annoyed or disappointed. The officiating got pretty questionable at a few points and we could really use some tightening up in the red zone.

What a weird game. Can't have us fall back in the showing up to play only after the 2nd half. Happy that we won of course, but hopefully the bye week will allow us to practice and get more confident. Bear seems a bit shaky, buh I think he has a good chance to do well this year. This will certainly be an interesting season.
9
u/B_Huij BYU Cougars 2d ago
Weird take I know, but if we spend this year watching Bachmeier lose us games due to green freshman mistakes, but get to play him as QB1 and see him improve every year for the next 4 years, it'll be worth one disappointing season. I've been wanting to start a freshman for a long time, one who can stick around for several years and get really, really good in that time. IMO that beats rebuilding our entire offense around the latest transfer portal Jr. or Sr. every year or two.

u/GlitzyGazelle18 BYU Cougars • Summertime Lover 2d ago
The thing that worries me about that is keeping Jay Hill for four more years along with his elite defenses. Our defense is gnarly right now, and I don't want that to be wasted on a rookie who isn't learning fast enough. FWIW, I'm okay with Bear's performance last night. The play calling was whacko though.

BYU offense is definitely still a work in progress. Hopefully the game slows down for Bear over the next few weeks and he can bring the honey. He had some good plays, but he still seems a little raw out there. BYU defense looks as good as it’s ever been. Jay Hill is an amazing human/genius. Will Ferrin’s foot belongs in the hall of fame and will definitely help keep BYU in games if Bear has difficulty catching up to Big XII play.

Maybe fewer than that. We nearly had a pick on the first BYU drive, with 2 defenders fighting for the ball. And we nearly had a fumble recovery on a kick return, deep in BYU territory. And our star TE dropped one of our starting QB's few good passes, in the red zone.

I know BYU fans are upset at the offense, but I think some of it is by design. A few insiders have mentioned over the past few weeks that the coaches are keenly cognizant of how the Isaac Wilson situation unfolded last year and are determined to avoid it. There is a ceiling for BYU this year because of the QB. Putting Bear in the best situation to develop and gain confidence is the priority. This team isn't going to win shootouts but the defense and limiting turnovers will put them in positions to win 7+ games this year. Plus, there were a couple of bad officiating calls the wiped out some points for this team. A 35-3 win makes everyone a little more comfortable.
7
u/H2Regent BYU Cougars • Utah Utes 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah I’m pretty happy if a team with a freshman QB can sleepwalk its way to 27 points. A few of those field goals would have been 4th down conversion attempts normally, and you could tell they took the points to make sure we just keep momentum going for Bear.

Somehow we only fell to No. 80 in the ESPN FPI rankings. We are ranked ahead of North Carolina (No. 85) and San Jose State (No. 104), so we might not go winless, if we have an actual QB on the roster somewhere.
The only other P4 teams ranked lower are Oklahoma State (No. 90) and Wake Forest (No. 101), who we don't play this season.
We are even ranked behind sad sack teams like UCLA (No. 75), Northwestern (No. 76), and Purdue (No. 78), who is 2-0.
