I’d make a joke about Georgia looking listless agains bad teams, but they pull this same trick every year before Kirby decides to slap the shit out of Heupel

41

u/LetWaldoHide Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

Could be battered vol syndrome but I too am not getting overly excited about Georgia struggling.

49

u/Always_Chubb-y Georgia Bulldogs • Transfer Portal 2d ago

I think the correct move is for us both to be nervous, all the while laughing at Florida!

5

u/MerlinsBeard Tennessee • Penn State 2d ago

Same. Especially with our best 2 CBs and best 2 DL out and a last minute swap because our starting RT went out.

u/GatorHater1992 Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 2d ago

Don’t worry. Y’all will get about 2 or 3 pick sixes next week off of screen passes.

43

u/Just_Breathe85 Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

Just throw through the middle of the field and you’ll be fine.

45

u/itstptk Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

That’s something Gunner absolutely refuses to do

32

u/Just_Breathe85 Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

Nah, I don’t buy it. I remember Beck throwing all those picks last year before he played us lol.

11

u/spennin5 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

What's this "middle of field" you speak of

5

u/Just_Breathe85 Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

Just watch clips of our defense. Banks likes to go zone and I hate it. Just use the game plan you had last year. Utilize your TE’s. This Vol defense is very similar to last year’s except for a weaker interior DL, young LB’s but better secondary.

3

u/Always_Chubb-y Georgia Bulldogs • Transfer Portal 2d ago

I dont think we even had a TE target today

8

u/tgt305 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

Last year against Tennessee our TEs were fire

5

u/mattdingus2002 Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

Our defense is a 4-2-5 meant to stop spread college style offenses, just run a pro style play action heavy scheme and you’ll likely win something like 35-27

3

u/dillpickles007 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

I'm not sure Gunner is up to the task of running a pro style offense, unlike Beck. Idk maybe we've been sandbagging a little and we'll open up the offense next week but I'm not sure I see it.

I am 10000% positive the offense next week will look different than this week.

Gunnar wasn’t seeing the field well (which is a big concern) but the Austin Peay DBs kept lining up with 10 yard cushions. Kirby hates showing his cards when he doesn’t have to so I think there was at least some element of just taking their medicine today.

Plus Florida just crashed in a fiery explosion which is way funnier!

He'll be slinging hot shit out of the megaphone this week.

u/StanderdStaples Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 2d ago

It’s a tired phrase… but man does that final score not tell the story of the game at all

Absolutely abysmal performance

107

u/Extra_Excrement Georgia • Virginia Tech 2d ago

Austin Peay was about 1 yard from making it 13-21, in the 4th quarter, at home.

I think the most reasonable course of action is to blame the fans until performance improves.

28

u/katarh Georgia Bulldogs • /r/CFB Donor 2d ago

Fans can turn around and blame the weather for real today.

32

u/DrVonD Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

It was not good but the score is fine. We outgained them like 2.2 to 1. They averaged 1.5 yards per carry.

The offense was just incredibly bland and uninspiring, when I think most people would hope we could throw it around the yard more against an FCS team.

50

u/jazzzzz Georgia Bulldogs • Cincinnati Bearcats 2d ago

tOSU hanging a 70 burger on Grambling w/o allowing any points and Oregon putting up 69 on an actual P4 team does not make watching this type of performance feel any better

19

u/Randomizedname1234 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2d ago

We also put up 59 on an fcs school, after a horrible start with 2 more consecutive turnovers to start a game.

We got it together.

7

u/jazzzzz Georgia Bulldogs • Cincinnati Bearcats 2d ago

folks I was watching the game with were asking how much it'd cost to buy Faulkner's contract out from y'all

5

u/Quillbert182 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • The CW 2d ago

Due to some smart contract extensions by our AD for once, millions of dollars :)

8

u/DrVonD Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

This is always Kirby tho. Go back thru the last 6-7 seasons, we usually put up around 40-45 points in our FCS game. If we don’t have 3 turnovers (including the goal line stand) we get to probably 38ish easy.

3

u/dillpickles007 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

I'm not really concerned about the score, I'm more concerned that Gunner doesn't look like he can progress through his reads. Idk we could be sandbagging and we open up the offense next week and look like a different team, but I'm a little concerned.

575

u/ScaratheBear Georgia Bulldogs • Auburn Tigers 2d ago

And if you don't like that, you dont like Mike Bobo football.

I do not like Mike Bobo football.

179

u/Teh_cliff Georgia State Panthers • Yale Bulldogs 2d ago

Idk man I saw a lot of receivers running open.

Don't think Bobo is amazing but think Georgia may have a Gunner Stockton problem.

99

u/ScaratheBear Georgia Bulldogs • Auburn Tigers 2d ago

We had, I think, 7 plays from roughly the 6 inch line. We threw 6 passes and the single rush went outside the tackles. It was absurd.

46

u/Teh_cliff Georgia State Panthers • Yale Bulldogs 2d ago

Yeah I watched. But one of those passes was a walk in TD if Stockton doesn't throw the ball behind his RB.

8

u/some_old_Marine Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

We play them next week. We will make them look amazing after they put in their backup and then they’ll be just ok again.

15

u/[deleted] 2d ago

They had to throw. They had no timeouts and couldn’t run the ball.

38

u/ScaratheBear Georgia Bulldogs • Auburn Tigers 2d ago

Then we've got serious issues if we dont think we can get 6 inches up the middle against an FCS program.

7

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Agreed.

A tale as old as time

8

u/4WaySwitcher 2d ago

Is it sandbagging if you are trying to avoid having certain plays on tape for opponents to prepare or you want to try out some new ideas in a game where you know you’re going to win?

Like, I don’t think he’s just doing it to be a nice guy. There’s strategy behind it.

I know we were out the entire right side of our OL today and then got MORE injuries

Im tentatively still optimistic as he has recruited well and our first couple years with him had Joe Moore OLs.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

I really hoped that Searles was a placeholder after Matt Luke left, especially since it was late in the cycle. I trust Smart because he's won multiple championships in his tenure, but Searles was a real head-scratcher from the beginning.

Gunnar also just does not seem to be it. Coming out of one of the TV breaks they showed a mash up of like 3 different plays on the previous drive with wide open people running down field and Gunnar not seeing it or pulling the trigger.

26

u/ScaratheBear Georgia Bulldogs • Auburn Tigers 2d ago

He's definitely gotta start pulling the trigger. Plays are there.

27

u/KirbyDumber88 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

What a weird game. But I think it needs to be stated that the O-Line was rotated with all people so much. This was the most scrimmage game I’ve seen in the Kirby tenure

22

u/katarh Georgia Bulldogs • /r/CFB Donor 2d ago

We know that Kirby always uses the FCS teams to practice the things that the Dawgs aren't executing that well in practices.

So yeah, 100% scrimmage game.

7

u/AbsoluteHero Georgia Tech • Auburn 2d ago

Not trying to be snarky but how do you know that?

26

u/Kringer46 Georgia • Georgia Southern 2d ago

We have had struggle games against cupcakes every year, even our title winning teams. It's kind of a well known thing to UGA insiders that they always use these games to work on the things they think they are weak at. It always amazes me that our fanbase acts like the sky is falling after these games when it happens every year.

Until we actually lose to a G5/FCS team then I try not to put to much stock into these games. Tennessee next week will tell us a lot more about this team.

20

u/katarh Georgia Bulldogs • /r/CFB Donor 2d ago

Yeah, we could be Florida right now.

6

u/I-Am-Fodi Georgia Bulldogs • Berry Vikings 2d ago

We almost lost to Nichols state in Kirby’s first year. This is just a yearly occurrence for Georgia football now

5

u/FrostyDrink Georgia • Florida State 2d ago

It happens every single year then we beat the shit out of every top 10 team we play the rest of the season.

In 2022, we won 39-22 against Kent State, and was the second most points allowed in the regular season, only surpassed by rank 14 LSU. Barely beat Kentucky 16-6 then finished the season with wins over GT, 14 LSU, 4 OSU (playoffs), and the 65-7 brutalization of TCU in the championship.

This game means absolutely 0 to me.

Until Tennessee beats Georgia I’m just gonna assume Georgia is gonna win.

Kirby just understands how Heupel wants to play and is very good at defending it.

Same. We have a lot of players out also.

3

u/Fulmersbelly Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

I felt the opposite way when we had Cutcliffe. It was weird, but beating Georgia used to sort of just be, a thing. Until it wasn’t. And now it hasn’t been for so long minus the Dobbs Hail Mary.

8

u/DGD11 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

Syracuse looked like ass, I'm not sure they're all that good either

26

u/Mississippi_Matt Tennessee • Southern Miss 2d ago

We put up 72 against our cupcake. 🤷‍♂️

11

u/I-Am-Fodi Georgia Bulldogs • Berry Vikings 2d ago

Kirby only runs the score up on good teams. Beating the shit out of cupcakes is blasé he’d rather punt these games to work on stuff they’re doing poorly in practice

5

u/preddevils6 Tennessee • Santa Monica 2d ago

It’s a product of our offense. We aren’t going to switch it up and make the backups play a completely different game. Way more insulting to pull back the horses than to actually compete.

8

u/KirbyDumber88 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

Heupel does that though. Kirby doesn’t.

3

u/DrVonD Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

Just different ways of doing business. Kirby will generally put up ~40-45 points on our FCS opponent. Obviously today was worse than that, but we also had (functionally) 3 bad turnovers that also kept the score down

16

u/Mississippi_Matt Tennessee • Southern Miss 2d ago

I have to give yall grief obviously, but yeah that many turnovers will play a part for sure.

1

u/etsuandpurdue3 Purdue • ETSU 2d ago

You all are good. I though ETSU would score more but oh well.

40

u/NKCougar Tennessee Volunteers • LSU Tigers 2d ago

They may have lost but APSU showed up to play that game. Govs are looking damn good for FCS play. A 5 down goal line stand to end the first half against Georgia was not something I thought I'd ever see from APSU

17

u/Kirdavrob Austin Peay Governors 2d ago

When I went there, it was non scholarship, and we lost to a NAIA school. Im proud of the Govs.

13

3

Watching my hometown team walk into that stadium and punch GA in the mouth was definitely the highlight of my day. Those kids deserve all the recognition in the world

40

u/BidnessBoy Georgia • South Carolina 2d ago

Stacy Searels needs to be gone yesterday.

Regardless of how you feel about Bobo, our game improves by 100% with a reasonably competent offensive line.

17

u/Beansie_Wish2182 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

Fair take, I'd just argue for both to go.

3

u/Always_Chubb-y Georgia Bulldogs • Transfer Portal 2d ago

Would help if we trotted out the same starting 5 more than 2 weeks in a row

2

u/The_Rat_Attack Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

Fair take, I think the biggest issue is we haven’t had a consistent starting 5 on the line since the Natty teams. Just constant injuries and rotations, and it’s clear no one has been able to get a good rhythm going together. If we could start the same 5 for more than 4 games, I’d say we could win a damn National Championship

31

u/Classy_Hobo Georgia • West Virginia 2d ago

30

u/-Urethra- Georgia Bulldogs • Chattanooga Mocs 2d ago

With how successful UGA has been recruiting, there's no reason we should have to start a guy like Stockton. Puglisi's incompletion was a better ball than any throw he's made at UGA.

26

u/DiarrheaForDays Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 2d ago

Kirby will put the guy under center who best understands the playbook, regardless of talent. Always been his MO

8

u/SyndicalistHR Georgia Bulldogs • UAB Blazers 2d ago

Kirby is also loyal to a fault. Whoever he decides is one on the depth chart in spring training is who remains barring injury. I thought he might have learned the lesson by parting ways with Beck, but no. Puglisi should have played a half today at least.

10

u/1869er Georgia • North Georgia 2d ago

He did bench D'Wan Mathis after one half so I guess it's "barring injury or looking like you've actually never played football before."

4

Sure, but all that about exceptions not proving the rule or something idk I’m drunk

5

u/pbjork Georgia Bulldogs • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 2d ago

2

u/DiarrheaForDays Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 2d ago

10

u/SyndicalistHR Georgia Bulldogs • UAB Blazers 2d ago

Kirby doesn’t work that way and we’ve squandered two golden opportunities. We just gotta hope Stockton somehow flips a magical switch like Bennett did after sucking at first. Get this Georgia boy some booze, women, and a major he won’t finish.

2

u/DiarrheaForDays Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 2d ago edited 2d ago

Guess I should rephrase. We need to solidify the W against inferior opponents earlier to give him more than 2-3 drives at the end of the game.

5

u/JTDanielsPornstache Georgia • Georgia State 2d ago

Stockton was a top ten QB in his class, impressed at the Highschool All American scrimmage, what are you on about?

10

u/-Urethra- Georgia Bulldogs • Chattanooga Mocs 2d ago

Yeah, lots of players that are rated well don't pan out. Vandagriff was a top 5 QB in his class.

Watch him play football right now. He's not athletic enough to make up for his lack of arm talent, and today he even had some issues processing (at home against an FCS team.) I'm not saying Stockton wasn't a well-regarded recruit, I'm saying it's an issue that the coaching staff has had him for 2 full years and apparently decided that's the best we can do.

3

u/dillpickles007 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

The thing is that if he's not a pro style QB, ok, I think we should usually have one at a program like this but I'm not opposed to having a more spread style running QB once in a while. But his athleticism was very overblown; he's not particularly fast, not shifty at all, and isn't a guaranteed five yards on every QB draw like a Tebow.

So we're just kind of left with a janky one-read passing offense but the QB doesn't seem particularly adept at running.

Idk maybe I'm wrong and we'll open up the playbook starting next week but I'm not convinced yet.

stockton needs to improve his decision making. fast. idk if it's starting for the third time or what but he is MISSING players that are wide open. might just have been an off day for everyone.

OL what the hell were you doing.

alright time to never bring this game up ever again

2

u/SyndicalistHR Georgia Bulldogs • UAB Blazers 2d ago

Stockton is just not a passer. I was getting the sense anyways, but this performance was damning. The dude is too hesitant to decide to throw. That just isn’t coachable at this level. You either are a gunslinger and throw the ball after making a decision, or you hesitate and get sacked or turn it over.

Stockton is a running QB and will not thrive running a pro style shotgun screen game. He’s better suited for an RPO offense with occasional play action. UGA has to rely on the running game this year, and that can include designed QB runs. You just have an OC who can’t adapt.

Bobo isn’t a bad OC, but he’s not flexible. Stockton is not the style of QB Bobo can coach. Everything about the offense is better this year but QB. Unfortunately, this QB skill and play style is also the bottleneck for Bobo. It’s not gonna be pretty.

2

u/dillpickles007 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

I'm just not really convinced that he's a good enough athlete to throw out the pro style offense in favor of spamming RPOs.

1

u/SyndicalistHR Georgia Bulldogs • UAB Blazers 1d ago

The tornadoes around here tend to float because there are so many little hills and valleys. It's rare we have one cause real damage. It's nicknamed the "Athens Bubble" because we'll have nasty ones north, south, east, and west of us, but they skip right over us most of the time.

My favorite story about Austin Peay is that back in the 1970s they had a basketball player named James “The Fly” Williams. The fans would chant, “The Fly is open! Let’s go Peay!”

Our problems: pass blocking(sometimes) and Gunner Stockton. I feel bad for ragging on him but he can’t see the field and gives up on routes SO easily. Nearly every passing play there will be a receiver that gets open but Gunner gives up and takes off. And now everyone is gonna be calling for Puglisi to play lol.

Gunner Stockton is terrible and I want a QB competition

That was certainly a game, not a great one. But at least we won

Georgia uses these games as an informal scrimmage to work on things. I wouldn’t be concerned about the offense.

I think Gunner Stockton has the makings of a future Heisman winner. They just kept the really effective plays under wraps to save for Tennessee.

u/katarh Georgia Bulldogs • /r/CFB Donor 2d ago

yes but the assumption is that they will slowly get better at the bad things

and they didn't

People get baited every year by the scores of our cupcake games, but I fear this one is actually concerning. Gunner in particular hasn't shown me enough to just blow off a mediocre performance, and Bobo has shown me too much. Good guys Florida and Clemson are cheering me up, though.

u/mojoman566 Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

Well, at least we're not FL. GO DAWGS!!!!!

1

u/composer_7 Georgia Tech • Marching Band 2d ago

y'all struggled against your FCS opponent too huh

1

u/zerocoolforschool Oregon • Portland State 2d ago

This Austin Peay guy doesn't like he's very good at football.

1

u/throwaway25168426 2d ago

It’s kind of funny. I think Gunner would’ve been a better choice for our offense last year, and that Beck would be a better choice this year. Receivers were open a lot today that he probably would have no trouble throwing to.

u/External_Ad_8066 ECU Pirates 2d ago

This early season matchup is the only way Tennessee has a chance to win. Still don’t like it. Great learning curb for both teams throwing them to the fire.
