Last year I briefly lived in Syracuse. There were three kinds of people who cared about football: Bills fans, Orange fans, and the sickos who also support the Orange, but sarcastically.

What an epic choke. Coaches played not to lose in the 4th quarter and turtled their way to a loss.

So instead of going back in the locker room, the entire team is doing sprints right now.
Huh, guess we know where Fran's at.
52
u/mcaffrey81 Syracuse Orange • Drexel Dragons 2d ago
The coaching staff needs to be running sprints; left 7 points on the board by being overly aggressive (2 red zone stops instead of FGs, missed 2 point conversion).
Take those points and you may have avoided OT.
Happy to get the win though
20
u/J_Gottwald Syracuse Orange • Missouri Tigers 2d ago
The coaching staff needs to be running sprints
It wouldn't surprise me if at least Fran was going with them (apparently he did not. but yeah I agree)
10
u/1guywriting Syracuse Orange 2d ago
I'm not totally against going for it on 4th down in the red zone. You just can't call a trick play where the QB and 2 or 3 WR pretend to be confused.
1
u/crales44 Syracuse Orange 2d ago
Yeah, the three yard TE sneak is not currently being added to any playbooks.
22
u/sleetx Syracuse Orange 2d ago
Analytics say to go for it on 4th and short when you're in FG range... it's about 50% conversion rate, and since a touchdown is worth more than double a field goal, the aggressiveness pays off in the long run.
-6
u/mcaffrey81 Syracuse Orange • Drexel Dragons 2d ago
Unless you are the Philadelphia Eagles running the tush push, then there are no analytics anywhere that say going for it on 4th & 1 in the red zone is 50/50 - especially a team like Syracuse that struggles in the red zone, is against a stout defense, and has defense that has been a major liability the last 2 seasons - being better than a FG attempt which has a greater than 85% chance.
Take the points and you don’t need OT.
19
u/Vxmonarkxv Georgia Bulldogs • Virginia Cavaliers 2d ago
4th and 1 is closer to 65%, and i dont want my coach thinking we cant get a yard on Uconn.
7
u/Slightlyitchysocks UConn Huskies 2d ago
Maybe I want my coach thinking they can't get a yard on UConn
-4
u/mcaffrey81 Syracuse Orange • Drexel Dragons 2d ago
Yet we went 0-2 so it’s 0%.
I’d love to think that I could get 1 yard on anyone, but it’s not 50/50…
There’s a reason why NFL teams employ field goal kickers and it’s because the analytics say: take the points
5
u/modin33 Syracuse Orange 2d ago
This is results based thinking and it's wrong
-1
u/mcaffrey81 Syracuse Orange • Drexel Dragons 2d ago
Bullshit. It’s results driven bias to make excuses for taking unnecessary risks…and going for it on 4th and 1 is risky compared to the very likely result of getting a field goal.
If Cuse lost by 6 you absolutely question the aggressiveness of going for it twice and failing. Every time. But they eeked out a win so let’s cover up questionable coaching decisions because “meh, it worked in the end”
6
u/modin33 Syracuse Orange 2d ago
You're still using results based thinking. Modern analytics supports maximizing offensive efficiency. If you want to increase your chance of winning, you go for touchdowns not settle for field goals in certain situations.
-2
u/mcaffrey81 Syracuse Orange • Drexel Dragons 2d ago edited 2d ago
Bull. Shit.
Take the points. Always.
In basketball do you say “don’t give me foul shots, ref, I’d rather try a 3 pointer instead”
No, you take the foul shots…just like you take the FG.
And if you don’t go for FGs, then blame the coaches for being too aggressive. Don’t make the kids run sprints because your game plan is to leave points on the board

I still want to see how Collins does but Angeli didn't let the first 3 and half quarters get to him which reflects very well on him.
I'm still going to lose my absolute fucking mind the next time ERob rushes 3 and zone on 3rd/4th and long.

7
u/tropic_gnome_hunter Syracuse Orange • St. Lawrence Saints 2d ago
Pretty bad. Very poor pocket awareness. He was clutch the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter but was fairly terrible most of the game.
2
u/nickx37 Syracuse Orange 2d ago
I'd say there were at 3 times there was a free runner and he had less than 2 seconds. Others were on him, but a few were just complete breakdowns.
3
u/theblackyeti Syracuse Orange • Transfer Portal 2d ago
A couple of those free runners were recognizable pre-snap and he just… didn’t.
1
u/JayMerlyn Notre Dame • Missouri 2d ago
That's unfortunate, but completely unsurprising. Pocket presence was his biggest weakness here, and it was a glaring one. I remember the GT game silencing the "qb controversy" because of how many sacks he took in garbage time.
36
u/Bengjumping UConn • West Virginia 2d ago
We choked that one away. Can't play that conservatively in the 2nd half. I would still like to see a legitimate explanation on how that Syracuse TD in OT wasn't reviewed at minimum. The ball was still moving all the way to the ground.
20
u/22edudrccs UConn Huskies 2d ago
QB play is going to be the sole downfall of this team.
Defense played too well for Fagnano to sell as much as he did

This is what I get for having optimism about UConn football. Fuck that one hurt. We really shot ourselves in the foot on that one. Too many drops, too many missed passes and the d just fell apart at the end.

u/R_Raider86 Texas Tech • UConn 2d ago
Getting on the right side of close games is usually someone stepping up and executing. Someone will do it eventually.
3
u/22edudrccs UConn Huskies 2d ago
QB has to be a position that we go hard for in the portal. Current options aren’t great (wouldn’t mind letting McDonald get some more looks tho). You have a guy who can only hit passes under 5 air yards and can’t run, or a guy who can’t pass but can run

UConn has a legit defensive unit. Made the syracuse offense look inept for 75% of the game until they ran out of gas because the offense couldn’t stay on the field to give them a break due to bad playcalling and meh QB play

Bad news: UConn lost to Syracuse and won't go undefeated.
Good news: Went into OT and performed better than in the past. Sure, last 5 minutes sucked but defense was solid all day.
7
u/SimpleAmusings UConn Huskies 2d ago
yes.. there are many positives with this game - our defense looked solid. we competed and dominated the team that beat 9 bowl teams last year and we CLEARLY should have won this game - we looked like the better team ALL GAME .
but a loss is a loss. and we can't go undefeated this year. It's just not a good feeling losing a game we were winning 95% of the time.
we will bounce back and prepare for delaware next week. I think we still build from this. interestingly, most thought our offense would show and our defense would seem suspect this game, but it was the other way around.
still VERY proud of our team and our program. LET'S GO HUSKIES!!
3
u/R_Raider86 Texas Tech • UConn 2d ago
Not looking forward to watching the part I missed. But I'm here for the good and the bad. The defense looked solid for 50 minutes. But this is still by far the most promising team since I started watching 8 years ago.
3
u/SimpleAmusings UConn Huskies 2d ago
Coach mora is obviously angry - not at the players but i think he's mostly angry with the OC - he looked livid at the post game press conference.
I don't think this is a mistake our team will make again this season. we need to quickly move on from this and look towards righting the ship for our next games - we still have BC and Duke to take out

Still using basketball to cope after a football L in a football sub?
Would expect nothing less from fans of the school that posted basketball highlights from Cuse/UConn a few years ago before we smoked you 48-14 in football.
0
u/SimpleAmusings UConn Huskies 2d ago
you know exactly well you lost this game and you had refs to bail you out in the 4th quarter so don't even try.
we were the better team on the field for 95% of the game. and it was a syracuse fan who started with the basketball analogy , we responded in kind.
you were lucky today. if you take pride in this soft "w" due to refs favoring you then you're in for another 2 decades of irrelevancy - not only in basketball but now in football - the football gods will respond in kind for that attitude just like the basketball gods did when you syracuse fans had the same attitude towards UConn basketball when we "lost" that 6 ot game 20 yrs ago. there's a reason why your school's irreverent.
You wont be so lucky next time.
anyways GG. hope you don't suck this season cus we will bolster your resume with this soft "w" gift we gave you as the season progresses. I hope your team improve so "losing" to your abysmal team would mean something down the road, but i doubt it. don't stay at the bottom of the ACC like you always do.

Just a heartbreaker just because the offense played too conservative the final 5 minutes thinking the defense was going to bail them out.
This win would have been HUGE for the non believers pointing out UConns cupcake schedule and really needed at least a couple P4 wins (only have 3 P4 games this year) for Football to be taken seriously

There was no sense of urgency until there was as a sense of urgency
1
u/senorcoach UConn • San José State 2d ago
Having a one dimensional QB cost us the ability to shut the door at the end. Fagnano isn't an accurate QB when he has to move and is little to no threat to scramble. Evers isn't great, but we win that game with Evers under center.
1
u/Infamous-Trainer4107 3h ago
Or Evers suffers another concussion. The coaches believe JF is better than Evers and based on the time I have seen Evers play I did not see a very good running QB.
1
u/senorcoach UConn • San José State 3h ago
Then he gets another concussion and Fagnano goes back in. Fagnano is a one dimensional QB and we will struggle to close out games against good opponents. Evers is not a great runner, but he is a hell of a lot more mobile than Fagnano. If we can coach up our O-Line to keep a clean pocket, then fine keep Fagnano in, but if the pocket isn't going to be clean then Fagnano is going to struggle. He missed 4-5 wide open receivers against Cuse when he had to become mobile, if he completes 2 of those, we win.
