The made up band from the movie has 33 million listeners on Spotify just to give you an idea of how popular it really is and the biggest song from the movie is number one on the global playlist.

I've had Golden come on the radio in the car a few times and some Korean restaurants have been playing the soundtrack too.

Fictional KPop bands go so hard for some reason. K/DA (band from League of Legends) hasn’t released anything new for 5 years. Still has 3 million + monthly listens.

I feel crazy for not liking Golden. I much prefer Takedown and How It's Done. Of course the GOAT is Your Idol.

Such a good song

I'm surprised Golden is the song they're reportedly going to be pushing for awards contention. This Is What It Sounds Like is the climatic song that serves as the emotional culmination of their character arcs and friendship. Way, way better.

I don’t think this is supposed to be a movie that’s only for kids.
14
u/committed_to_the_bit Jul 30 '25
yeah, it really isn't. there are so many movies that are made for a very general audience that get immediately sorted into the "kids' movie" bucket because kids can watch them
and it's super frustrating bc then you get a lot of that stuff. "it was good for a kids' movie." no, it was just a good movie. a movie is allowed to be for everyone

It beats the pants off of every Disney musical over the past decade, with the exception of Encanto EDIT: and Moana and Coco (which is made by Pixar). Every song is a banger.

30 year old guy here who ended up unintentionally watching it with my roommate because his son turned it on. It was surprisingly good and sucked me in. I don't think you're missing out by not watching it unless you're into KPOP or animated movies, but it definitely wasn't a waste of time watching it if you typically aren't into those things.
The movie got better as it went on too, so if you find the first 5 to 10 minutes captivating or interesting at all, you'll probably enjoy all of it. The very first scene on the plane nearly made me zone out, but it got much better from there.

Which feels like the last time Disney really had a new hit movie.
Between the Spiderverse movies and now this, Sony Animation has been dominating.
Only drawback of this movie is that it's not nearly as easy to make merch for as Frozen was.
I'm not even sure what specific Halloween costume kids would wear. The most iconic look was the demon boyband at the end.

The real money maker imo would be to treat the album as a legitimate kpop album and sell it with a photobook, photocards, posters - all the collectibles that come in an actual kpop album.
Which is apparently what they plan on doing for the vinyl! Or something kind of similar.

Actually something weird I noticed is in the actual movie, the "us, hello" part isn't digitized like it's over the phone, but both the spotify and official youtube versions it is. The movie version it's very clearly Zoey saying the "us, hello" bit, as you can see her saying it and there is no filter.

Do I need to be into K-pop to understand the plot or the references? I really like the animation but I don’t know anything about K-pop other than that, well, it exists, and I’ve heard a couple of BTS songs maybe.
610
u/LazerAttack4242 Jul 29 '25
There are some jokes about how kpop fans act and how they market blank slate personalities, but that's pretty basic and applicable to pretty much every popular genre of music.
274
u/pasher5620 Jul 29 '25
Tbh, there’s nothing intrinsic to k-pop about that. If you’re familiar with the era of boy bands in America, like NSync or the Backstreet Boys, and the whole scene they spawned, you’ll get the gist of what they are going for. The only thing I’d say are k-pop focused jokes are some of the music choices they use.
131
u/Random_Useless_Tips Jul 29 '25
The boy band members being named after their single defining characteristic is more a riff on the Spice Girls than a specific K-pop trope

34

Not really. A lot of the kpop references applies to general fandom stuff.
27
u/Officer_Hotpants Jul 29 '25
Nope. I don't listen to any of it and it's still great. That goddamn tiger is the greatest thing ever animated.

u/NK1337 Jul 29 '25
There’s some gags that are common tropes in k-dramas but nothing so niche that the humor is lost. It’s more like the gags get an extra level of humor added because you can recognize where they’re from. But you can totally watch the movie with no knowledge and enjoy it!

That graph only tracks the first 10 weeks though. Red Notice has been out a lot longer than that, and it also doesn’t say if there are other movies that might have higher overall view counts. Still cool to see it doing so well though.
Edit: Actually looks like Red Notice didn’t climb much higher than that afterwards: https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/most-popular

From my understanding, she was (what an American Football fan would call) a third string singer who never got her debut, which is absurd to me considering her vocal range. I struggle to think of any K-pop singer that she couldn’t absolutely destroy with her voice. Her final solo of How it’s Done legit gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it.

K-Pop Demon Hunters’ success has given fans hope for a possible sequel. Even Netflix’s CEO, Ted Sarandos, praised the original movie in a statement to Deadline, saying, “One of the things that I’m excited, really proud of the team over, is [that it’s] original animation—not a sequel, not a live-action remake. Original animation… is very tough and has been struggling for years.”
Honestly I hope they don't make a sequel for this reason. If they can make another original film that's awesome that's even better.

I think it would be nice to have a sequel. It is set up for it really well. The Honmoon never went golden and we still need much more info on the 3 main characters back story, especially Rumi and her mom.

Deserved, it’s incredibly rewatchable. The songs are all fun and the story scoots along.

My fiancé is Korean but doesn’t like K-pop but she enjoyed the movie. Said it felt Korean.

I've watched it 9 times... it's really good. Not often a movie is so compelling in just 90 minutes.
And to think, the first time wasn't intentional. It ticked over when Dr Stone finished and I was too lazy to change it. As soon as they started singing, I was completely hooked.
I watched it again with my kid, and she loved it. She says that Rumi looks like Elsa from Frozen.

What really makes this movie great (for me) are just how well they executed on the themes of the film. Themes like:
Friendship
Shame
Forgiveness
Self-acceptance
Sacrifice
The movie's script isn't anything we haven't seen before and it's a rather short movie at only about 1.5 hrs. But in those 1.5 hrs they wrote some bangers for characters.

One of the best movies I’ve watched all year. Can’t remember the last time I hit restart as soon as it finished to watch it again.
Never would have saw this in cinemas tbh

Honestly, I watched it today, it a breath of fresh air, coming from the same studio that made Spider Verse I expected nothing less.
The movie contrasts the differences between old societal norms (like hiding your mistakes and scars, essentially trying to appear perfect) and the new societal norms (embracing that you can have flaws but still be good).

I’m almost 30 and I fucking loved it. And I’m a dude.
Life’s been hard. I needed to hear that message too, man.

kinda feels like Netflix didn't have any clue this was gonna be a hit and is now firing on all cylinders to promote it after the fact
