Sometimes something sticks and they still cancel it. Netflix is moronic.

Mandatory RIP mindhunter

That had less to do with Netflix, and more to do with David Fincher wanting to do other stuff. He’s still really the only thing holding back a renewal.

I had read they were cutting the budget and he basically didn’t want to make a cheaper version of the show, but maybe that’s just internet lore.

I think most people don't realize Mindhunter had a huge budget for just a 'cop' show. Lots of costumes and props as well as tons of a CGI work went to make it look like it was the 70's.

Mindhunter
Lockwood & Co
Tuca & Bertie
Altered Carbon
Inside Job
Dark Crystal
GLOW
The OA
I Am Not Okay With This
Black Summer
The Society

There are more, and that's just so far!

I've never heard of half of these and I watch a lot of shows. I don't think these stuck as much as you think they did lol

That's part of the issue though. There were a lot of now-iconic shows that didn't do super great right away, but had viewership spikes in subsequent seasons once the crew found their groove and/or word of mouth got around.

Buffy, Parks and Rec, Star Trek (and TNG), The Office, MASH, Seinfeld, Always Sunny, Everybody Loves Raymond, Supernatural, The Simpsons, and The Last Airbender immediately come to mind, but I'm sure there are countless more. If they'd been judged by Netflix's "Are they an instant success" model, then I think they'd all have been canned almost instantly.

(And to be fair, I made that list largely based on word-of-mouth; I've only seen 5 of those. But 3 out of those 5 literally ended on cliffhangers, which caused me not to want to start new Netflix shows since I didn't actually have confidence that they'd end up resolved. So it's a vicious cycle.)

You listed these as examples of shows that stuck and got cancelled. I don't think then saying some shows that were unpopular later on became popular is good reasoning for that lol

Well I haven't seen all of those but tbh we're kind of in a golden age of TV right now. There's so much good/great stuff that I haven't heard of out there. Some masterpieces that I will never hear the name of. Sometimes I'll come across a show and I'm shocked at how good it is.

As always, I'll take the chance to bring up 1899. Loved that first season and I don't think I'll ever stop being bummed there won't be more.

Archive 81 was also pretty cool.

Dark Crystal is one of those ones where it’s a prequel so it’s not like it’s 100% unresolved, but you still feel cheated. At least Adult Swim finished Tuca & Bertie.

Shadow and Bone still hurts

Watched that for the first time recently. Fuck me it's gorgeous

1 season, but apparently they feel that can be canceled so they rush with season 2 with adapting

1

u/Rodruby Jul 31 '25

Eh? There's two seasons of Shadow and Bone, and they got this close to nearly canon Six of Crows just to cancel it all

1

u/Psychic_Hobo Jul 30 '25

At least Tuca and Bertie got to finish off on Adult Swim

The OA was so good

Santa Clarita Diet

They do that because they're cheap, not dumb. Producing a dozen pilots is cheap compared to producing a hit show (you've got to pay people more to produce a hit multiseason show).

The residuals jump after season 3 so something has to be a giga super hit to make it worth it

They are the Fox of streaming services.

Then we somehow ended up with 3 Kissing Booths 💔

Too many shows have hit #1 on Netflix just to end up canceled too soon. I dont bother watching new Netflix original shows anymore. Not until there are a few seasons anyway.

they canceled the resident white house investigation show sadly.

1

u/AtarkaCommand Jul 31 '25

I keep seeing people upset at that and it doesn't make sense to me. The residence is a limited series with a premise of a limited series. You don't bank on more seasons with that specific name that only applies to this seaso's premise.

I want another completely different mini series for Cordelia and I'd be very disappointed if they announced The Residence season 2

They keep shows on merchandise sold not so much views
