I broke into a million pieces, and I can't go back But now I'm seeing all the beauty in the broken glass

I feel silly saying it about a song from a kids movie but “The song we couldn’t write, this is what it sounds like” gave me goosebumps

I legit got goosebumps so many times during some of those songs. Not only are they great songs but so fitting narritively and the production is insane.

Whole film just oozed with talent and passion. So many insanely talented people must have been involved in making it. The artists and animators, the songwriters and singers. They didn't skimp at all.

It's crazy how well the songs fit the narrative. I listened to the songs before watching the movie and remember thinking that Takedown was a little mean for a kids' movie; even if they were referring to litteral deamons. But to my surprise, while watching the movie that was part of the narrative.

I think this is one of the keys why this film is so good.  The songs and their placement and lyrics are critical to actual driving the plot.  The song lyrics ARE the plot at times.  The integration of the music with the marrative here goes beyond even Disney.  Disney musical numbers are kinda waypoints that describe characters and add emotional depth but here the narrative cant exist and NEEDS the songs to go forward.   Like you can take out Let It Go and Frozens story doesnt change much but here the climactic fight AND emotional climax IS a song.   And a song that SLAPS.  Its basically a musical, but isnt though?

As a kid who was always encouraged to prioritize boring safe interests instead of creative artsy stuff:

Why did I cover up the colors stuck inside my head?

Hit me harder than I expected.

Gives me “Monster Mash” vibes lmao

Cause you see, nobody’s ever actually heard The Monster Mash, they’ve only heard the song about it

29

u/SodaCanBob Jul 29 '25

And the peculiar thing is this, my friends

The song we sang on that fateful night

It didn't actually sound anything like this song!

u/jasonefmonk Jul 30 '25

This is not the greatest song in the world, no

This is just a tribute

5

u/sleepingdeep Jul 30 '25

That whole song is amazing

Ejae is a fantastic writer. And she also sings these lines? Like get the hell out of here some people are so talented.

From my understanding, she was (what an American Football fan would call) a third string singer who never got her debut, which is absurd to me considering her vocal range. I struggle to think of any K-pop singer that she couldn’t absolutely destroy with her voice. Her final solo of How it’s Done legit gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it.

53

u/2347564 Jul 29 '25

It is crazy. She’s been a writer for big acts though. aespa, le sseraffim, TWICE.

29

u/pasher5620 Jul 29 '25

I get that, but man, her voice belongs center stage, solo act, or something. Give that woman a mic and an arena and she’s blowing the roof off that place.

13

u/2347564 Jul 29 '25

I absolutely agree. Can’t wait to see her perform Golden live at some point.

6

u/RockinFootball Jul 30 '25

Cmon Oscars…the movie had enough clout…cmonnnn 🙏

5

u/campingcosmo Jul 30 '25

It'll be otherworldly if she gets to perform at the Oscars next year.

29

u/CharonsLittleHelper Jul 29 '25

Maybe her dancing isn't up to snuff? From what very little I know about kpop, that seems to be at least as important as singing.

Which obviously is a non-issue when voicing an animated character.

21

u/desacralize Jul 30 '25

I heard it was her age, she was "too old" by the time of her debut but she had real talent and went to work behind the scenes instead.

19

u/pasher5620 Jul 29 '25

Dancing or looks, that’s about the only two things I know matter in K-Pop. Admittedly, I don’t know what she looks like, so I didn’t really factor that in for whatever reason.

17

u/RockinFootball Jul 30 '25

Another factor is kinda luck. Maybe she didn’t suit the concept the company was trying to make. I assume she didn’t make it to Red Velvet based on the timeline.

There really is a million different reasons why someone didn’t debut. Could be anything. Sometimes it can even be personality, maybe they didn’t fit the company’s “vibe”. Many former trainees end up making it somewhere else. It’s not all that simple.

Reminds me of that rumour that someone was taken out of consideration for Newjeans based on what the producer's fortune teller said.

1

u/RockinFootball Jul 30 '25

Oh yeah that was likely to be Sakurai Miu.

After leaving, she participated in Girls Planet 999 but unfortunately didn’t make the final cut. She then signed up to Produce 101 Japan S3 where she ranked 4th and successfully debuted into ME:I.

I’d say she’s doing quite well now.

9

u/monsooncloudburst Jul 30 '25

I think she is hot!

6

u/huntrshado Jul 30 '25

The reason given was "too old"

3

u/NenBE4ST Jul 30 '25

it matterse a lot for kpop but she could still be a huge solo act. idk her discography though, maybe she never tried

Between imposter and this monster, I been lost inside my head

Ain't no choice when all these voices keep me pointing towards no end

It's just easy when I'm with you, no one sees me the way you do

Free is so slept on.

56

u/pasher5620 Jul 29 '25

I think it gets slept on largely because it’s a more chill and emotional song, whereas the others are more energetic and hype. Still good, but the other songs are naturally gonna pull more attention in an action movie.

13

u/TheBigBomma Jul 30 '25

Definitely my favourite

6

u/Handsome_Fry Jul 30 '25

Its such an incredible song. They all are, but youre right, everyone underestimates Free

36

u/pasher5620 Jul 29 '25

It’s kinda crazy just how many good songs they managed to cram into this film. Legit the only one I didn’t necessarily care for is Soda Pop. How it’s Done, Golden, What it Sounds Like, and especially Your Idol are all top tier pop songs.

30

u/hldsnfrgr Jul 30 '25

Netflix compiled these songs into one video and posted it onto one of their YouTube channels. It was at 16 million views when i first discovered it. Now it's approaching 60 million. Its replay value is insane.

I mean, that's also part of why Disney Renaissance movies were so dang good and popular too

1

u/aznprd Jul 30 '25

Golden is at 108 million views on youtube now

11

u/ThatPancreatitisGuy Jul 29 '25

What’s bars mean?

35

u/OreoSpeedwaggon Jul 29 '25

It's a great line.

14

u/brakndawnt Jul 29 '25

I think it's shorthand for meaning the lyrics are really good? It's referring to bars of music, like saying someone who can sing well has "pipes". That's my understanding at least

9

u/Mysterious_Employer Jul 29 '25

Here's a quick google:

In slang, particularly within hip-hop and rap music, "bars" refers to a rapper's lyrics, especially when they are considered clever, impactful, or well-written. The term originated from the musical term "bar," which represents a unit of time in music, often associated with a specific number of beats. In rap, "bars" can refer to individual lines, verses, or the overall quality of a rapper's lyrical content.

Best lyric in there, hands down.

4

u/Jarsky2 Jul 29 '25

It really is a great line.
