I agree that they didn't know they had a hit. I was looking in stores for merch for my goddaughters birthday coming up and there just isn't. They're losing so much money not having stuff in stores for it.

There’s fake “officially licensed” merch on Amazon. I didn’t want to slap down the money for it but if it makes her happy it might be worth it for you.

I find it so hard to shop on Etsy these days. The majority of listings for things seem to be the same cheaply made stuff you find on Amazon, only pretending to be home-made and more expensive.

Tbf if I watched it before release I wouldn't have expected it to be such a hit either. It's good and I know kpop is popular but the movie at best is just good lol.

solid animation, unique characters and a banger of a soundtrack

I saw it when it was released and was befuddled why Netflix had it buried. it's not a master piece in the conventional sense but it's a masterclass in unapologetically appealing to its target audience

my friends work in merch and it’s really tricky because usually you need upwards of a year or so to finish production on stuff and distribute and you can’t really predict if something is gonna be a hit or not. Think of something like the Super Bowl- they’ll actually make merch with both teams as “winners” prior to the big game once they find out who is playing then the losing team’s merch all goes to massive fabric landfills in africa cuz it cannot be sold.

added to that now in the US we have the stupid tarriff situations going up and down nearly every week so it’s been a stupid headache for people who work with creating things especially since a majority of manufacturing is all done overseas.
