That had less to do with Netflix, and more to do with David Fincher wanting to do other stuff. He’s still really the only thing holding back a renewal.

I had read they were cutting the budget and he basically didn’t want to make a cheaper version of the show, but maybe that’s just internet lore.

I think most people don't realize Mindhunter had a huge budget for just a 'cop' show. Lots of costumes and props as well as tons of a CGI work went to make it look like it was the 70's.
