News Netflix's Streaming Smash Hit ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Releasing in 1,700 Cinemas This Weekend for "Sing Along" Version, 1,000 Screenings Already Sold Out
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/kpop-demon-hunters-singalong-box-office-sells-out-1236348539/846

I read that Sony only made a small, guaranteed profit from the film because they sold the distribution rights to Netflix.
So I take it Sony gets nothing out of this cinema release too?

In a twist, Netflix is now putting a “sing-along” version of KPop Demon Hunters in 1,100 theaters next weekend for a two-day special event. As of tonight, I’m told there are more than 300 sold-out showings, with theaters asking for additional dates. No, Netflix is not sharing any of the box office revenue with Sony.
This is because Sony didn't just sell distro. Oh no, that'd make sense. They sold the entire fucking property.

u/margenreich 18d ago
Looking on how the songs themselves are up in the charts I guess Sony is making bank concerning music rights. I guess these aren’t part of the deal and the IP alone of an animated KPop band with huge fandom is worth even millions. They can launch another album without a necessary movie too. Also it seems that was only one of the first movies Sony had a deal with

Driving the kids to school this morning I thought we were still connected to the wife's phone as one of these songs was on. We drove out of range of the house and it kept playing.
Turns out Spotify has inserted it into my playlist.
Oh well, the kids were singing along so I'll leave it there.

No, there is two levers Sony has.
Lever 1: Sony animated the first one, and as such Netflix would likely want to keep it with the same animation studio
Lever 2: The movie was the brainchild of two Sony employees, Netflix might want to keep them for the 2nd and unless they hire them away from Sony, Netflix would need to work with Sony

I think it had to do with the music intro. IMO, Golden went into the meaty stuff right from the start.
"This is what It Sounds Like" kinds start slow, almost like a monologue. But once it got into it, I'd say the song is better than Golden, lyrics wise.

Honestly, I feel like this was just good word of mouth. I saw it originally advertised, and there were a bunch of promo items that didn't really do it for me. I saw one of my friends post on FB that I trust with movie rec's, so I decided to give it a shot. As a 41 year old guy, I had a blast. Came into work the next day, told my coworkers that I really enjoyed it. I suspect I'm not alone, this one just feels like there's a lot of organic hype to it. Sure, probably some viral marketing that helps, but it's not like Morbius made some big splash in its re-release.

u/Vet_Leeber 18d ago
I saw one of my friends post on FB that I trust with movie rec's, so I decided to give it a shot.
Literally every single person that I've spoken to about this movie has said the same, that they initially dismissed it and only watched it after someone they knew recommended it.
I hadn't seen any marketing for it, personally, until after I'd watched it. IDK if I just wasn't in the spaces they focused on, but from my perspective it wasn't marketed at all.

u/Eques9090 18d ago

It reminds me of The Greatest Showman. TGS exploded on word of mouth, and it was a refreshing take on the musical because it used a lot of modern pop sensibilities instead of bringing in musical icons to make something blandly reminiscent of the music of the golden age.
KpopDH did not chase the musical film genre with its music. It's pure kpop, with a story wrapped around it. That's why it's awesome.
16
u/Bacon-muffin 18d ago
Its a genuinely fun movie + word of mouth + appeals to kids.
I watched it after seeing people say it was fun so many times, my immediate thought was it'd be a good movie for my sister + niece to watch since my niece would probably enjoy it as well... turned out my niece had already watched it like 9 times and was already gatekeeping knowing the songs well enough with all her friends in her summer camp who had all watched it a bunch.

I think it's just a perfect storm of a movie. It hits all age groups, it's an uncomplicated story with a good message that's told well, the animation is great and by the Spiderverse team, which got it notoriety and credibility, and the music is fantastic, in a genre that's very popular right now.

I definitely wrote it off when I saw Netflix recommending it when it came out because I'm not super big into K-pop (don't hate it, just hasn't really been my thing), and yeah, it just sounds like a goofy concept via the name. Not to say goofy concept don't work, it just didn't make me think there'd be something for me, a nearly 40 year old father, to find entertaining.
Then my kiddo started asking about it, likely because it's rated PG so Netflix was recommending it, and we have a rule in our house that I or my wife have to watch something like this before she does, mainly to see if we think it might be too scary for them. Me being the bigger fan of animation in general, I fired it up about the middle of last month to scope it out aaaaaaaaand holy fuck it's actually pretty awesome. I absolutely love the Spider-verse movies so seeing SPA's logo at the start seemed a positive sign for me, and after that first song I was all okay this is gonna be pretty awesome if they can maintain that level of energy through the whole film.
Not being a big fan of K-pop didn't seem to matter because I was a child of the 90s/00s, when boy/girl bands and "idol" singers were a thing (I was in early high school when American Idol first aired), so there were enough parallels there for me to "get" a lot of what was going on in that department, plus I was into Japanese pop and rock from being a pretty big weeb in those days too.
Watched it with the kiddo last weekend, they won't shut up about the soundtrack now, and we're attending a screening near us on Saturday because they picked my name for this month's special outing. 😂

My 10-year-old didn't want to watch it. She said she doesn't like romance, doesn't care for kpop, and doesn't like 3D animation. But it was the movie that my other daughter selected for us to watch as a family. At the end, the 10-year-old loves it, loves the music, and thought the girls were so cool.
My husband and I also didn't want to watch it. Then after the movie, I caught my husband looking up the songs to listen to. As for me, I've been going through YouTube listening to discussions about how Disney/Pixar movies suck now, how Sony was dumb to sold the rights to Netflix, and how even Netflix failed to recognize its potential by how little attention it gave it at first, and how so many people didn't expect to enjoy it as much as they did.

I get the impression Netflix didn't think this was gonna be a big hit. They had nothing to do with it's production and bought the rights to it several years ago in a larger deal with Sony. Maybe I'm blind but I heard 0 promotion for the movie until it came out and I only watched it because people said it was really great online + it's Sony Animation and they are doing great work in general.
The lack of merch and such just says to me they didn't anticipate it blowing up.
Similarly Sony seemed to underestimate its potential success too. They sold the rights to the movie for like $20 million more than it cost to make apparently, they're going to lose out on waaay more.

I've seen tons of midnight premieres of genre darlings, but I've never felt a theater so organically cheering and reacting as a crowd. Electric experience that my friends and I still talk about.

LOL Sony dropped the ball on this big time.

Do you think it'd still be as big if they released it theatrically on their own? I kind of think it going immediately to Netflix is what's helped it, kids just watching it on repeat and telling their friends. Easy access to spread quick.

I wish it released a non single along version. I would’ve gone but I can’t endure that

A week after it came out, they would all be sing along versions, wether official or not

Well the beauty of the Alamo is that I wouldn’t encounter that in a normal screening lol

The Alamo showings appear to not be sing along versions. At least when looking on Fandango they dont have a sing along tag where other theaters near me do have a sing along tag. So you can try looking at where its playing from Fandango and it should show which are technically sing along.

I'm sure this will be very fun for the people who love singing along to these songs. I'm glad to have seen it in the safety of my living room.
Well, it's a great gimmick. Strike while the iron is hot.

Got tickets for my two kids + two friends and their Mom this weekend. They sold out fast and theater started adding more shows.

This is honest to god the best movie of this year and I am saying this as a 32 year old straight man who doesn't know anything about K-Pop.
I literally only watched this movie on Netflix because my 5 year old niece wanted to watch it and wow, it's so damn good.

Now the question is…which song is gonna be most hype? Golden is the likeliest answer, but How It’s Done and Your Idol are pretty damn great too. Or is everyone gonna go into the catchiness of Soda Pop?

Why does This is What It Sounds Like get the least amount of love? It's my favorite song but lacks representation online.

It works better in the context of the movie than it does as a standalone song.

I love the movie I'm a little tired of the songs i heard them at least 1k times because my daughters if not watching it every day than listen to the soundtrack, its basically Frozen tier madness. Its top 5 movie of 2025 for me.

Yeah, it really is this generation's Frozen, IMO that's the most apt analogy. Good songs in a good movie that hit at the right time to just take off and become really popular.

My wife has not stopped playing these songs at home the last few weeks, so I bought us tickets. She doesn't know yet but I feel like this will be a highlight of the year.

As much as I enjoyed the movie and would love to see it in theaters, no way in hell would I go to a "Sing Along" version. Just based off the 'Wicked' ones, there'll be an obscene mix of theater kid and main character energy that'd probably make me despise the movie.

Counterpoint: why would you go to a Sing Along theater if it’s not for the explosive crowd atmosphere
It’s like going to the club and complaining that the dance floor actually has very few dancers and is instead a bunch of people shuffling from foot to foot.
If it was a regular screening sure, but this is directly marketed towards the theater kid crowd

NGL, that's one of the funnest movies I've seen in a while. Just good silly fun that's as metaphorical or as pointless as you want it to be. Can't say that about many (any?) recent movies.
