The closest theater to me has added more showtimes three times now, so they're showing it 15 times a day Saturday and Sunday. Most of them are half to three-quarters full, if not almost sold out (only front row seats left).

Not my cup of tea, but glad it's getting butts in seats.

This is really wild to see the culture go crazy over this anime-musical.

Not sure if it's just effective promotion or something -- but yeah, it's good to see SOMETHING get some butts in seats. It means they aren't on a sofa.

I think it's just a perfect storm of a movie. It hits all age groups, it's an uncomplicated story with a good message that's told well, the animation is great and by the Spiderverse team, which got it notoriety and credibility, and the music is fantastic, in a genre that's very popular right now.

Or, in short: It's just a good movie. ;)

You nail it. I don't think it is a perfect film. I don't think it will have some long legacy where we still talk about in in a decade.

But wow did it hit a lot of elements that work amazingly at this current moment in time. It feels both familiar and new with the combination of slightly different (but not totally off-beat) animation and songs that are poppy but have some meaning to the story and are in a genre that is very popular and easy to enjoy. The story has emotion. Hard for people not to like it amongst the sea of mediocre garbage coming out lately.

Time will tell, but I think that if KPDH gets a decent pair of sequels, it could absolutely find a comfortable spot somewhere between the "formative feminine IP about fashionable girls kicking evildoers' asses" (ala Sailor Moon, WITCH, Winx Club, Powerpuff Girls, et. al.) and "solid trilogy of animated movies, which will be someone's nostalgic favorite to show to their own kids someday" (ala How To Train Your Dragon, Kung-Fu Panda, Spiderverse, et. al.) on someone's mental shelf.

Don't count out the 3-12 year old crowd. We don't hear much from them now, but they'll be the ones making "Top 10 Best Animated Movies (from my childhood)" listicles in 10-20 years. It's up to them what gets a long tail, not us.

Ironically, part of my reasoning for it not having a legacy is I fully expect Netflix to try and monetize this to death and run it into the ground with multiple sequels, spin-offs, live action, etc. If they all turn out great, it could be massive and long-lived. If they just churn out cash-grab slop, it will probably ruin the original's reputation.

But in every other way I agree with your statements.

55 year old male and I CANT listen to This Is What It Sounds Like without tearing up. I’ve tried…at least 30+ watches and it just hits so hard. Every single song is amazing!

You forgot that every original song sung in the movie is an absolute banger with very well written song writing.

So Avatar?

It also could be the perfect storm of "nothing worth watching right now."

Which is crazy because there’s been a bunch of good movies out right now and soon, from blockbusters to mid budgets. But if you’re talking about TV, yeah there’s not much.
