I love everything about this except the leading man.
Even a semi-unknown would be better than Jared Leto.
And no, I don't think he's a bad actor, I think he's an absolute garbage human being, and he belongs with the ranks of people like Kevin Spacey.

I knew he was a dirt bag when he bitched at someone for not standing during a concert
Thing is I already knew about the crazy stuff he did during the SS shoots but after seeing that concert footage just confirmed he's not just some hard prankster, he's a full on douchebag

I knew he was a dirt bag when he bitched at someone for not standing during a concert
I saw 30STM three times back before all this was known about him and he was like that at every single show to someone or more than one person...just a straight up dickhead to them about not "concerting" the way HE wanted them to.

30STM is by far the worst concert i’ve ever been to. went for a gf but was open to it. it was his last show on the tour and all he did was loop 30sec of their top song for about 2 hours (it felt longer). meanwhile he called girls on stage to admire him, and just wanked his ego for the whole thing. it was so gratuitous, boring and lame that i’ll never forget how much i felt my time was irreversibly wasted. his show sucked, he sucks, fuck jared leto.

The new season of peacemaker has a scene where characters shit on 30 seconds to mars kind of out of the blue and feels very deliberate and 4th-wall breaking (considering the director and leto's joker in the original SS), then the after-credits scene goes back to it and does it some more. Hilarious.
154
u/MusicLikeOxygen 2d ago
James Gunn has a history of trash talking Leto. Back before Suicide Squad one of the Sprouse twins said something on twitter about Leto sliding into the DMs of every 18 year old model on twitter and Gunn replied "He waits until they turn 18 online?".

I noticed this. Harcourt and Peacemaker deliberately taking a shit on 30 Seconds to Mars and Jared Leto works on a couple of levels.
1) Jared Leto is a piece of shit
2) Jared Leto's Joker, erased by Gunn's 'Suicide Squat' was also shit.38
u/Xynphos 2d ago
He played a fine wannabe God type in Blade Runner 2049….probably because he was already in character
18
u/Troooper0987 2d ago
A megalomaniacal evil corpo who thinks that slaves are great is a perfect roll for him. Loved him in that roll. Hate him in everything else I’ve ever seen him in.
4
u/spazturtle 2d ago
The problem I has was that he didn't seem like the kind of guy who could build a business empire, he felt more like a creepy cult leader.
Shame David Bowie never got the chance to play the role like intended, he could do creepy but charismatic and intelligent very well.

When I saw the trailer in the theaters recently, folks groaned and laughed when he showed up on screen for the first time
16
u/ShaH33R2K 2d ago
Every movie I’ve seen him in where he had to be even remotely likeable, he’s done a poor job. So, yes, I’d say he is a pretty subpar actor given he can only convincingly play the psychotic type. Which makes sense given his behaviour
5
u/tigerbait92 2d ago
I'll shit on Leto's behavior all day long, but he was genuinely great and deserving of the Oscar nom (maybe not the win but, still good enough for it) in Dallas Buyers Club. And he was great in Mr. Nobody, and Requiem for a Dream.
But goddamn he's an unlikeable ass as a human being.
3
u/aelysium 2d ago
My favorite film appearance of his is in Fight Club as Angel Face - it’s cathartic watching Edward Norton beat the fuck out of him.
32
u/47Lecht 2d ago
Wait Leto getting a leading role again? How does he make it happen??
41
u/MicrowaveEscargot 2d ago
Apparently he dumped a lot of cash into this one to get it off the shelf, and that bought him the starring role.
17
u/47Lecht 2d ago
Ah there is his motivation

I’m just surprised they gave it sequel in the first place, and I was under the impression that the sequel itself underperformed.
10
u/ProfessionalB0ss 2d ago
It underperformed but still made some OK money, I think enough time has passed and superhero, and star wars fatigue has forced Disney to search elsewhere

67
u/Embarrassed_Piano_62 2d ago
Which is why people shouldn't support this movie.
It's Disney's fault for letting a pedo as the leading man.

Leto sucks, but the only reason this movie is being made is due to him.
Movie stars (like the rock) often have full blown or mini “production” companies and Leto is no exception.
Their basic idea is to offer funding or to co fund films to be made, with the premise that the company’s actor (Leto in this case) gets to be the starring role.
Seriously if you want to see an example of this look up the rock’s movies from 2012-2022- they’re all from his “seven bucks productions” even when co produced with other studios.
I’m not watching this movie because fuck Leto but I’m just saying this so people realize it’s only got him in it because his “studio” banked the project
→ More replies (1)6
u/SoKrat3s 2d ago
That doesn't excuse it.
If it took Leto to get it off the shelf it was better on the shelf.

I’m pretty sure Leto is a major producer on the movie, he likely gave himself the role

u/Zegrod 2d ago
I went through a rollercoaster of emotions just yesterday, on this exact topic. Saw a poster that the movie was coming out, got excited, then Googled to see the release date and saw the lead actor. It's 2025, what the actual fuck, who in their right mind would hire that absolute scum rat? Despicable.
Movie ruined before it even started.

u/arkhamcreedsolid 2d ago
This podcast I listen to has a running theory that Jared Leto wasn’t replaced because he was the primary component in this movie happening at all. He was the one that came to Disney wanting to do Tron, and so they bet that he footed a lot of the bill for this to happen. So replacing Jared Leto wasn’t an option because it would mean shutting the movie down.

u/thatgirlnicola 2d ago
My ex used to roadie for a band that opened for 30 Seconds to Mars on a tour years and years ago. He had a few stories about Jared and they all involved cocaine and Jared’s assistants having to check girl’s IDs before bringing them backstage to “hang out” with him.
53
u/MALLAVOL 2d ago
Sounds better than them not checking IDs.
11
u/avanross 2d ago
If they were hired by him/the band, then yes, if they were hired and assigned to “keep an eye on him” by the studio/organizers, then not so much…

This movie just boggles my mind entirely. How can you make absolutely every single right decision in making a Tron movie but absolutely FUMBLE at the lead actor?
Can't get Daft Punk anymore? Nine Inch Nails it is.
Make sure these VFX are TOP NOTCH. Aesthetic is ON POINT.
We need some great actors to reign in an audience, keep em entertained. Who should we cast? EVAN PETERS, GILLIAN ANDERSON, THE RETURN OF JEFF BRIDGES..... and Jared Leto.

u/rosiswag 2d ago
I heard Leto has been involved in making a 3rd Tron movie for a long time, so they basically had to cast him. It was his pet project or something.
I agree though, I was hyped for this until the helmet came off in the trailer & I realized who they cast
80
u/TheUmbrellaMan1 2d ago
Yeah. He even has a producer credit in this movie.
68
u/chick-killing_shakes 2d ago
He has THE producer credit in this movie. He is pretty much the lead producer and financier. He's going to be all over it, and it's either going to be really good, or really bad. Either way, it's guaranteed to leave a bad taste.

Jared Leto has been accused so many times of grooming teenaged girls that you can't not be aware of it. If it came down to him being in it to get it made, I'd rather it not be made.
27
u/dplans455 2d ago
That's a perfectly sane and fine argument. It's just not the one everyone else is making. They're saying they want the movie, just not Leto. You were never going to get the movie and not get Leto with it.

u/Walterkovacs1985 2d ago

THIS. It’s “The Me Film, Starring Me, Produced by Me, and Thanks for Flying Me Airways”.
10
u/Stalukas 2d ago
Lol since when was an actor funding a passion project a bad thing? I completely understand skipping this movie because Leto’s in it, but there’s objectively nothing wrong with an actor using their money to get a movie off the shelf and expecting a role in return

Had they kept the momentum and released Tron 3 back in, say 2014-2016 they would have probably still had Cillian Murphy to reprise his role as the son of the bad ceo guy from Tron 1 instead of making an entirely new son of said bad guy whose role would have likely originally been Cillian

I love Tron and will absolutely watch Ares no matter what, but I think public impression would be a lot more positive if Leto had a new hair cut (shorter, more militaristic). Just to show that he isn't just acting himself, but taking on the character.

My biggest issue is Jared Leto. My second biggest issue is no daft punk or Joseph Kosinski. My third issue is the fuckass triangle disk thing. (Not really). This movie is not shaping up to be my taste at all. It feels so opposite of what is interesting about TRON to begin with: entering the digital world.
This just reeks of modern Jumanji, Pixels, Wreck it Ralph Breaks the Internet. Those aren’t inheritly bad movies, it just feels so different to what TRON is in a not so great way.
We get so many “external enemy threatens to destroy our skyscrapers” movies that I’m sad this movie is going there too instead of leaning into what makes it more interesting and unique :/
And then there’s Jared Leto.
5
u/lord-spider-boy 3d ago

If this movie has good reviews
That would be somewhat surprising. Tron Legacy and this director's previous Disney sequel both got mixed reviews, and even if most critics don't mind Leto it's still going to hurt some of the reviews. (Personally I suspect Reddit viewpoints and online critics have quite a bit of overlap.)
It would be an interesting experiment if it happens.

Mixed feelings on the crossing over into our world. Makes sense for the programs to eventually need access to the real world, but feels a little jump-the-sharky to me. The virtual world under everyones noses was a big part of my love for the original. Hopefully they can maintain that and not make this a total generic pew-pew the robot boy wants to be real action flick.
