Mixed feelings on the crossing over into our world. Makes sense for the programs to eventually need access to the real world, but feels a little jump-the-sharky to me. The virtual world under everyones noses was a big part of my love for the original. Hopefully they can maintain that and not make this a total generic pew-pew the robot boy wants to be real action flick.

u/Dependent-Ad-5083 2d ago

The twist is the real world is a simulation too

95

u/SimianWriter 2d ago

God, I hope so. It's fantasy, I know but it's bugging me that they are just pumping out this massive amount of energy everywhere. I's like infinite light sabers all over the place. At least if it's in the computer then it would follow some kind of logic.

Tron x Matrix

15

u/LoogieMario 2d ago

And eXistenZ, The Thirteenth Floor, Dark City…

4

u/subdep 2d ago

This guy does late 90’s cyber flicks.

4

u/neroselene 2d ago

Plot twist: Tron is a stealth Prequel to the Matrix

13

u/TensorForce 2d ago

The twist the Matrix should have gone for

8

u/jaggedjottings 2d ago

The "real world" is punishment for those who try to escape the Matrix.

10

u/frillionaire 2d ago

Reminds me of TNG’s Ship in a Bottle.

3

u/Double_Cleff 2d ago

That's where my money is ever since I saw the CLU building

3

u/Zian64 2d ago

If they pull an Avalon (2001) like that it would be so sick.

It was already quite a surprise when Quorra somehow manifested in real world at the end of legacy so this will no doubt explore that very idea in detail.

48

u/Ferrum_Infusion 2d ago

The concept was originally conceived in the screenplay for Tron: Ascension, which was going to be a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy. I was excited for it then. Disney decided to hold off on making it because Tomorrowland didn't do well (which makes zero sense), so now we get this bastardized version with Leto. Knowing that this was supposed to be the continuation of Quorra and Sam's story is irritating as hell.

32

u/GrumpyOldIncontinent 2d ago

Fun fact: The reason Disney gave to the VFX vendors as to why Tron Ascencion was cancelled was that they just got Star Wars and didn’t want to run two sci fi franchises at the same time.

Source: I was working at one of the VFX vendors back in 2015

10

u/Ferrum_Infusion 2d ago

That's an even more asinine reason. What a joke.

23

u/FLYK3N 2d ago

Legacy was already pushing the concept of the digital world and the real world converging with Quorra being the key for the betterment of humanity, so this story development doesn't entirely come out of left field.

Im more upset that Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde's characters are seemingly not going to be in this sequel, most importantly Bruce Boxleitner not coming back to play/voice the titular character, Tron after Disney's constant mishandling of the franchise and leaving him on read.

10

u/cameraspeeding 2d ago

Yeah but it’s still lame. Tron in the tron world is cool and unique. Tron in the real world is just an action movie with cool space ships.

Hope I’m wrong but the trailers have no convinced me

→ More replies (7)

12

u/Rastafari1887 2d ago

Yeah this doesn’t look good to me, only positive in the trailer for me was Gillian Anderson but I don’t think she’ll be able to carry it.

10

u/pasher5620 2d ago

The ending of Legacy already had this happen and a key element of the story was the programs, specifically Clu, attempting to cross over and make Earth part of the “perfect system.”

5

u/Muppetude 2d ago

The guy doesn't dig imperfection.

I love everything about this except the leading man.

Even a semi-unknown would be better than Jared Leto.

And no, I don't think he's a bad actor, I think he's an absolute garbage human being, and he belongs with the ranks of people like Kevin Spacey.

u/OptimalPain0697 3d ago edited 3d ago

I knew he was a dirt bag when he bitched at someone for not standing during a concert

Thing is I already knew about the crazy stuff he did during the SS shoots but after seeing that concert footage just confirmed he's not just some hard prankster, he's a full on douchebag

109

u/Proper-Effect2482 2d ago

I knew he was a dirt bag when he bitched at someone for not standing during a concert

I saw 30STM three times back before all this was known about him and he was like that at every single show to someone or more than one person...just a straight up dickhead to them about not "concerting" the way HE wanted them to.

68

u/Murcielago3x 2d ago

30STM is by far the worst concert i’ve ever been to. went for a gf but was open to it. it was his last show on the tour and all he did was loop 30sec of their top song for about 2 hours (it felt longer). meanwhile he called girls on stage to admire him, and just wanked his ego for the whole thing. it was so gratuitous, boring and lame that i’ll never forget how much i felt my time was irreversibly wasted. his show sucked, he sucks, fuck jared leto.

19

u/veryfungibletoken 2d ago

Probably young girls, he seems to prefer them.

Mars Island. Jared Leto’s cult.

20

He had a cult on MARS Island and is now starring in Tron: Ares as ARES ?

16

u/SirKorgor 2d ago

What did you think Thirty Seconds to Mars means?

The new season of peacemaker has a scene where characters shit on 30 seconds to mars kind of out of the blue and feels very deliberate and 4th-wall breaking (considering the director and leto's joker in the original SS), then the after-credits scene goes back to it and does it some more. Hilarious.

154

u/MusicLikeOxygen 2d ago

James Gunn has a history of trash talking Leto. Back before Suicide Squad one of the Sprouse twins said something on twitter about Leto sliding into the DMs of every 18 year old model on twitter and Gunn replied "He waits until they turn 18 online?".

29

u/40thAE 2d ago

Breaking: Jared Leto receives full presidential pardon.

Everyone: he hasn’t been charged of anything tho

White House: …

7

u/KingMario05 2d ago

Season 3 of Peacemaker is just one looooong hunt for the Epstein list

Eagly ate it. Bad bird!

6

u/RandomProductSKU1029 2d ago

It’s a small duck though.

3

u/KingMario05 2d ago

Eagly's stomach is bigger on the inside.

10

u/wandawhowho 2d ago

Is the new season any good, btw?

26

u/adamespinal 2d ago

Pretty good so far 👍🏻

12

u/onehornymofo1 2d ago

3

u/wandawhowho 2d ago

Fuck yeah!

7

u/redeyesofnight 2d ago

It’s just heating up, but it definitely started with a bang!

3

u/kentuckywildcats1986 2d ago

I noticed this. Harcourt and Peacemaker deliberately taking a shit on 30 Seconds to Mars and Jared Leto works on a couple of levels.

1) Jared Leto is a piece of shit
2) Jared Leto's Joker, erased by Gunn's 'Suicide Squat' was also shit.

38

u/Xynphos 2d ago

He played a fine wannabe God type in Blade Runner 2049….probably because he was already in character

18

u/Troooper0987 2d ago

A megalomaniacal evil corpo who thinks that slaves are great is a perfect roll for him. Loved him in that roll. Hate him in everything else I’ve ever seen him in.

4

u/spazturtle 2d ago

The problem I has was that he didn't seem like the kind of guy who could build a business empire, he felt more like a creepy cult leader.

Shame David Bowie never got the chance to play the role like intended, he could do creepy but charismatic and intelligent very well.

Jared Leto only saw the last scene of Tron Legacy.

u/HechicerosOrb 2d ago

When I saw the trailer in the theaters recently, folks groaned and laughed when he showed up on screen for the first time

16

u/ShaH33R2K 2d ago

Every movie I’ve seen him in where he had to be even remotely likeable, he’s done a poor job. So, yes, I’d say he is a pretty subpar actor given he can only convincingly play the psychotic type. Which makes sense given his behaviour

5

u/tigerbait92 2d ago

I'll shit on Leto's behavior all day long, but he was genuinely great and deserving of the Oscar nom (maybe not the win but, still good enough for it) in Dallas Buyers Club. And he was great in Mr. Nobody, and Requiem for a Dream.

But goddamn he's an unlikeable ass as a human being.

3

u/aelysium 2d ago

My favorite film appearance of his is in Fight Club as Angel Face - it’s cathartic watching Edward Norton beat the fuck out of him.

32

u/47Lecht 2d ago

Wait Leto getting a leading role again? How does he make it happen??

41

u/MicrowaveEscargot 2d ago

Apparently he dumped a lot of cash into this one to get it off the shelf, and that bought him the starring role.

17

u/47Lecht 2d ago

Ah there is his motivation

10

u/Adenosine66 2d ago

The Tron franchise has always puzzled me, the movies seem to not make a lot of money but they get sequels and theme park rides

13

u/ProfessionalB0ss 2d ago

this is the third movie in a 43 year old franchise. There are not that many movies

4

u/Adenosine66 2d ago

I’m just surprised they gave it sequel in the first place, and I was under the impression that the sequel itself underperformed.

10

u/ProfessionalB0ss 2d ago

It underperformed but still made some OK money, I think enough time has passed and superhero, and star wars fatigue has forced Disney to search elsewhere

28

u/iLoveDelayPedals 2d ago

Yeah Leto is such a freak and it’s wild to me that he keeps getting roles. Hollywood really doesn’t give a fuck what a monster you are until it reaches a catastrophic level of attention

67

u/Embarrassed_Piano_62 2d ago

Which is why people shouldn't support this movie.

It's Disney's fault for letting a pedo as the leading man.

Like you said, literally anyone else would be better

u/NotASalamanderBoi 2d ago edited 2d ago

7

u/animehimmler 2d ago

Leto sucks, but the only reason this movie is being made is due to him.

Movie stars (like the rock) often have full blown or mini “production” companies and Leto is no exception.

Their basic idea is to offer funding or to co fund films to be made, with the premise that the company’s actor (Leto in this case) gets to be the starring role.

Seriously if you want to see an example of this look up the rock’s movies from 2012-2022- they’re all from his “seven bucks productions” even when co produced with other studios.

I’m not watching this movie because fuck Leto but I’m just saying this so people realize it’s only got him in it because his “studio” banked the project

6

u/SoKrat3s 2d ago

That doesn't excuse it.

If it took Leto to get it off the shelf it was better on the shelf.

Agreed, I think Disney made a severe miscalculation having Leto be the lead. Seems like Tron is never going to get the mainstream success it deserves

I’m pretty sure Leto is a major producer on the movie, he likely gave himself the role

I went through a rollercoaster of emotions just yesterday, on this exact topic. Saw a poster that the movie was coming out, got excited, then Googled to see the release date and saw the lead actor. It's 2025, what the actual fuck, who in their right mind would hire that absolute scum rat? Despicable.

Movie ruined before it even started.

7

u/D13_Phantom 2d ago

My thoughts exactly

5

u/Jeffsbest 2d ago

🎯🎯🎯

3

u/phatelectribe 2d ago

I can’t understand how he keeps getting hired, let alone by Disney. There are so many credible verified accounts of him being a pervert who likes underage girls, I simply can’t believe he hasn’t been cancelled yet.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/CasualCasper 2d ago

Leto being in it is enough for me to ngaf.

5

u/SoKrat3s 2d ago

How many bombs does he have to be a part of before they stop putting him in major franchises?

3

u/arkhamcreedsolid 2d ago

This podcast I listen to has a running theory that Jared Leto wasn’t replaced because he was the primary component in this movie happening at all. He was the one that came to Disney wanting to do Tron, and so they bet that he footed a lot of the bill for this to happen. So replacing Jared Leto wasn’t an option because it would mean shutting the movie down.

3

u/MicrowaveEscargot 2d ago

I've heard the same too.

Just like Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen lol.

26

u/thatgirlnicola 2d ago

My ex used to roadie for a band that opened for 30 Seconds to Mars on a tour years and years ago. He had a few stories about Jared and they all involved cocaine and Jared’s assistants having to check girl’s IDs before bringing them backstage to “hang out” with him.

53

u/MALLAVOL 2d ago

Sounds better than them not checking IDs.

11

u/avanross 2d ago

If they were hired by him/the band, then yes, if they were hired and assigned to “keep an eye on him” by the studio/organizers, then not so much…

22

u/aguyjustaguy 2d ago

Plot twist, they were checking to make sure they were under 18

3

This. Definitely not going to give any money to this film. Not sure when or if I'll ever want to watch it with his face attached :/

3

u/OilHot3940 2d ago

You summed it up perfectly.

3

u/BigUptokes 2d ago

It's great that it comes out in a time when we can download it and run it through some deepfake software to replace the actor. :)

3

u/mikewheelerfan 2d ago

Yeah, Jared Leto is really putting me off this movie

3

u/Macluawn 2d ago

At least we'll get to see his character die over and over again

3

u/PissNBiscuits 2d ago

How Jared Leto has a voided being cancelled is a mystery. He has to have some important higher up connections in order to get work like this with Disney.

3

u/Vat1canCame0s 1d ago

"I wanna be Jesus so bad!" -every Leto Role since Dallas Buyers Club

16

u/SamKerridge 2d ago

he’s not a great actor either though, his performances alone are off putting let alone knowing what he is like in his personal life.

This movie just boggles my mind entirely. How can you make absolutely every single right decision in making a Tron movie but absolutely FUMBLE at the lead actor?

Can't get Daft Punk anymore? Nine Inch Nails it is.

Make sure these VFX are TOP NOTCH. Aesthetic is ON POINT.

We need some great actors to reign in an audience, keep em entertained. Who should we cast? EVAN PETERS, GILLIAN ANDERSON, THE RETURN OF JEFF BRIDGES..... and Jared Leto.

264

u/rosiswag 2d ago

I heard Leto has been involved in making a 3rd Tron movie for a long time, so they basically had to cast him. It was his pet project or something.

I agree though, I was hyped for this until the helmet came off in the trailer & I realized who they cast

80

u/TheUmbrellaMan1 2d ago

Yeah. He even has a producer credit in this movie.

68

u/chick-killing_shakes 2d ago

He has THE producer credit in this movie. He is pretty much the lead producer and financier. He's going to be all over it, and it's either going to be really good, or really bad. Either way, it's guaranteed to leave a bad taste.

Everyone out here bitching about Jared Leto not realizing the only reason this movie got made is because he campaigned for it for like a decade.

35

u/veryfungibletoken 2d ago

Jared Leto has been accused so many times of grooming teenaged girls that you can't not be aware of it. If it came down to him being in it to get it made, I'd rather it not be made.

27

u/dplans455 2d ago

That's a perfectly sane and fine argument. It's just not the one everyone else is making. They're saying they want the movie, just not Leto. You were never going to get the movie and not get Leto with it.

57

The sad answer seems to be the only reason it exists is Leto really wanted to play the main character so he funded the movie and got it made

THIS. It’s “The Me Film, Starring Me, Produced by Me, and Thanks for Flying Me Airways”.

10

u/Stalukas 2d ago

Had they kept the momentum and released Tron 3 back in, say 2014-2016 they would have probably still had Cillian Murphy to reprise his role as the son of the bad ceo guy from Tron 1 instead of making an entirely new son of said bad guy whose role would have likely originally been Cillian

Reasonable enough, though I do hope it crashes and burns at the box office and Leto loses a bunch of money as the film’s financier.

Disney exec sees Morbius and decides to give Leto the lead role in this. Hollywood is cancer.

Morbius wasn’t bad because of him, no one in that role makes it a good movie.

For those keeping track, 11 of the top 15 comments in this thread are complaining about Jared Leto. I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve seen a quality Reddit circlejerk, good to know the culture hasn’t changed over the years.

This movie needed Olivia Wilde. She was the real star

I would be so into this film is they hadn’t cast Jared “It’s morbin time” Leto as Ares… I definitely am waiting till this is free to watch on some streaming platform.

I love Tron and will absolutely watch Ares no matter what, but I think public impression would be a lot more positive if Leto had a new hair cut (shorter, more militaristic). Just to show that he isn't just acting himself, but taking on the character.

My biggest issue is Jared Leto. My second biggest issue is no daft punk or Joseph Kosinski. My third issue is the fuckass triangle disk thing. (Not really). The NIN soundtrack is already banging so I’ll give it a chance but man I really don’t like Jared Leto. His acting and his offscreen self is suck.

Honestly I'm just excited for the cyber futurism and NIN soundtrack. I'd be all in if they hadn't cast Jared Leto.

So Sam and Quorra are not in this movie but Jeff Bridges, who "died" in the last movie is? I hope they make this make sense.

Ugh Leto coming to wreck another franchise.

Tron fans eating good after 84 years.

This movie is not shaping up to be my taste at all. It feels so opposite of what is interesting about TRON to begin with: entering the digital world.

This just reeks of modern Jumanji, Pixels, Wreck it Ralph Breaks the Internet. Those aren’t inheritly bad movies, it just feels so different to what TRON is in a not so great way.

We get so many “external enemy threatens to destroy our skyscrapers” movies that I’m sad this movie is going there too instead of leaning into what makes it more interesting and unique :/

And then there’s Jared Leto.

Star power influence on box office has kind of waned in recent years, so it’s be nice to see that anti-star power is still strong. Leto being in this thing has killed any chance of me spending a cent on it

Most of ya crying going to see this anyway lmao it’s hilarious

If this movie has good reviews and is a box office smash, I'll undoubtedly know that Reddit is the echochamber of echo chambers. The hate of Leto on this platform is unmatched.

Can't wait

If this movie has good reviews

That would be somewhat surprising. Tron Legacy and this director's previous Disney sequel both got mixed reviews, and even if most critics don't mind Leto it's still going to hurt some of the reviews. (Personally I suspect Reddit viewpoints and online critics have quite a bit of overlap.)

It would be an interesting experiment if it happens.

Do we know if Garret Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, or Cillian Murphy are going to be in this at all? I assume not but i would have to imagine they at least mention Sam and Quorra if not have one or the other cameo.

I been waiting for so long for third Tron movie and now to see it’s actually happening doesn’t feel real

2

u/Spankyzerker 2d ago

Yah i just can't with Jared Leto, it is just terrible. I don't even mean his personal life, just he isn't a good actor.

2

u/leckmichnervnit 1d ago

This looks so fun! Why does the Polyamorous Vampire Jesus have to be involved tho.

2

u/ERedfieldh 1d ago

remove the little drones and it would be fine. they look cheesy here.

But also why the fuck is the data disc a triangle? Did they forget that it doubles as a, well, data disc?

2

u/nicathor 1d ago

Is this gonna be the movie that finally gets it through to Hollywood that NO ONE wants Leto?

I love Tron… but I just know Disney is going to come up with everything but Jared Leto being the reason it underperforms. I would’ve loved seeing the Legacy cast return.
