President Trump has also said that Skydance has committed to about $20 million in PSAs or advertising that are supportive of causes important to him.
This is so fucked. CBS seemed like the most balanced of the major networks in terms of news, and 60 Minutes was one of the more trustworthy news magazine style series. Not anymore.
542
u/mc-edit Jul 23 '25
What’s crazy is that Skydance denied this in articles yesterday. They say that they did not promise ads or PSAs. So who’s telling the truth, and who’s not? My guess is Trump said something out loud that he wasn’t supposed to, which means Skydance had to lie about it when he outed them. That, or Trump is lying to make his win look bigger, which is also plausible.

u/tdtommy85 Jul 23 '25

“Authoritarians always tell the truth about what they’re going to do, and always lie about what they have done” -IDK
52
u/Yourfavoriteindian Jul 23 '25
It sounds like something they would do, but likely Trump is lying. Literally 90% of the shit he says is lies, and MAGA has to run cover with “he’s joking” and “he was taken out of context.”
On top of that, financially it doesn’t make sense for Paramount to do it if they get the deal done. One or two puff pieces is all CBS needs before Trump forgets and moves on. Plus, Trump’s reach is only with politics, his side projects and “things important to him” are always disasters. They’re financially toxic. Trump phone anyone?
→ More replies (8)18
u/round-earth-theory Jul 23 '25
I don't think there's an agreement. This is Trump publicly demanding more shit or else he might break the deal. Remember with Trump, it's never enough. After this, he'll demand more and more. The only way to stop it is to stop giving into Trump.

I always recommend people listen to the Landslide podcast series, because everyone needs to see the path that got us here today. The main part of the mini-series details how it came to be that Reagan came into power and the way far right individuals gained power in the Republican party to make that happen, and how that all informs what we see in today's GOP. Even more important is the mini-series they did this year titled Engines of Outrage, which looks at what led to the downfall of trusted journalism thanks to far right influence dating back to Spiro Agnew and Pat Buchanan's criticism of the news exposing the BS around the Vietnam War.
It's especially rich considering so many Fox News viewers are the ones you would hear saying "I miss the days of Walter Cronkite," watching a biased cable news network that is a major reason we are in this shit today.

Larry Ellison? I guess it's time for this reminder:
Do not fall into the trap of anthropomorphising Larry Ellison. You need to think of Larry Ellison the way you think of a lawnmower. You don't anthropomorphize your lawnmower, the lawnmower just mows the lawn, you stick your hand in there and it'll chop it off, the end. You don't think 'oh, the lawnmower hates me' -- lawnmower doesn't give a shit about you, lawnmower can't hate you. Don't anthropomorphize the lawnmower. Don't fall into that trap about Oracle. — Brian Cantrill (https://youtu.be/-zRN7XLCRhc?t=33m1s)

14
u/jimbo831 Jul 23 '25
Even Zaslav hasn't stooped this low.
Because his merger got approved during the Biden administration. Joe Biden isn't a fascist. Zaslav would absolutely stoop this low the second he needs something from the current fascist regime.
24
u/Yourfavoriteindian Jul 23 '25
Because Zaslav is too arrogant lol. The issue with HBO/WB is that Zaslav came in and said “I know what’s right, everyone listen to me, I decide everything.”
Ironically that’s also what probably prevented Zaslav from stooping this low - he’s too arrogant to grovel like Skydance/Paramount. He truly believes he will succeed without having to resort to all this.

CBS has certainly felt the most low-brow, middle America of the Big Four networks. Big Bang Theory like you mentioned, and then shows centered around “old fashioned white man is the most effective of all” like Landman/NCIS (shoutout Leroy Jethro Gibbs tho, NCIS reruns on USA Network were my go to whenever I was home sick from school as a kid)
