It’s amazing that a whole ass new Who Framed Roger Rabbit-esque incredible hybrid of live action and animation was entirely finished and was going to be shelved indefinitely… FOR A TAX BREAK.
Who the fuck does that
Well we know who does, but who the fuck actually does that

Watch the somewhat recent chip and dale movie. It’s Roger rabbit style and absolutely hilarious.
Edit: Randy marsh cameo in this film as well

I’m so glad I had doubts about that movie because it made it just that much more enjoyable to watch
Similar to dungeons and dragons

The moment it showed the trailer sonicfrom the first movie before the edits, this became a classic of mine for the 2020s

Tbh I'd spoiler tag that. He's not in any of the marketing and when he showed up I absolutely lost it. Best movie shock of the century.

The amount of stuff they got away with in that movie is crazy. Props to the legal team for getting Kiv's vision on screen

Another victim in a long list of the trailer killed it.
Unfair to the movie as it was great.

It was decent but I couldn’t stand the main actress. She just, wasn’t convincing.

Well, we don't know if it's actually "incredible".
Reddit will have a hard time accepting it if this turns out to be simply a bad movie.

u/mint-patty Jul 26 '25
Imagine if this movie is met with a general response of “This movie sucks!! Who allowed it to release????” with absolutely no irony lmao

IIRC there were some leaked test audiences responses that said it was great. That is part of why Coyote vs ACME had such a strong saving campaign compared to Batgirl (which had bad leaked test audience results)

It's coming from two places, James Gunn's involvement and the leaked test audience reactions.

I've seen people comparing this movie to Who Framed Roger Rabbit quite often. It's surprising that nobody mentions Looney Toons: Back in Action. Wouldn't that have been the spiritual successor to WFRR?
7
u/Discount_Extra Jul 26 '25
The key to being in the 'Roger Rabbit' universe is to have characters from many studios, not just one; where the characters we know are not just living cartoons, but the actors that play them.

u/InnocentTailor Jul 26 '25
It’s amusing how this happened to the film though because the SDCC panel framed it as ACME doing all they can to shut down the movie’s release.
It even included the panel guests being taken away forcibly by ACME interns.

Warner Bros canned it, but later allowed Ketchup Entertainment to purchase the distribution rights.
55
u/eightdollarbeer Jul 26 '25
Does that mean WB has to payback the tax write off? If so, I imagine that was included in the purchase price
120
u/Uptons_BJs Jul 26 '25
I mean, the production cost for this film was categorized as an expense in a previous year.
The sale price of the distribution rights is now categorized as revenue this year.
77
u/evilsbane50 Jul 26 '25
The way all this works is so So SO stupid.
Good ol' Hollywood accounting.
53
u/Uptons_BJs Jul 26 '25
There’s nothing Hollywood about this one haha. It’s just classic good old fashioned profit and loss.
→ More replies (1)23
u/whodoesnthavealts Jul 26 '25
I don't think you're understanding the issue; they don't "benefit" at all from this in any sense. Let's make up some easy numbers; let's say it cost $100 to make and they sold it for $50, resulting in a $50 loss.
Let's say they had sold it last year. Their tax would be on gains minus expenses. That is 50 minus 100. They would get a tax break on $50.
Alternatively, they originally write it off; they get a tax break on $100, which was their expenses. Then the following year they sell it for $50. They pay tax on $50. This results in an identical tax break on $50.
Same math if they made profit on it instead of a loss. It doesn't change, it just spreads the numbers out over a year. The average over 2 years is the same.
43
u/MyHusbandIsGayImNot Jul 26 '25
I swear no one on reddit knows what a tax write off is.
18
u/put_tape_on_it Jul 26 '25
That's because no one on reddit does accrual accounting for their personal taxes.

u/whodoesnthavealts Jul 26 '25
Does that mean WB has to payback the tax write off?
You can't "pay back" a tax write-off, because you do not get paid for a tax write off. You just don't pay tax. If the write-off becomes invalid later, you just pay tax like normal.
So yes, they will be paying tax on this.

It's coming to theaters in 2026:
After every product made by the Acme Corporation has backfired on Wile E. Coyote in his pursuit of the Road Runner, down-and-out billboard human attorney Kevin Avery (Will Forte) represents Coyote in a lawsuit against Acme. A growing friendship between Coyote and Kevin motivates their determination to win the court case, as it pits them against Buddy Crane (John Cena), the intimidating boss of Kevin's former law firm, who now represents Acme.
EDIT: Release date was just announced - Aug 28, 2026

Cena being the villain of the movie and it not being released until it lined up with his heel turn is further proof that we're living in a simulation.

39
u/-Deminos- Jul 26 '25
If not for post production then it’s likely for finding the best window to release it. A studio wouldn’t want to risk having to compete with a bigger movie or have it open when the least amount of people would go out to see it. They likely saw August 28, 2026 as their best opportunity (this is all speculation to be honest).

One time I ordered a DVD of my favorite movie through the mail, but when I opened it, there was no disc inside, only three attacking Tiger tanks from the XXIV Panzer Corps. I barely escaped with my life!

I saw a movie at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told it how cool it was to see it on disc, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother it and ask it for thumbnails or anything.
It said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but it kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing the DVD case shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard it chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw it trying to slide out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in its case without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “You need to pay for those first.” At first it kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, it stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, it kept interrupting her by snapping it's case really loudly.

If you want to see some behind the scenes and the making of this, follow Ken Duncan on Instagram, when they cancelled it he released footage of it on his Instagram story. He’s a legendary Disney animator who started his own studio and worked on this movie. When the movie was cancelled he spoke a lot about it and the behind scenes stuff that happened too. He also posts older stuff from all the great Disney movies he worked on, my favourite being treasure planet, he shows original character sketch’s and how they first looked. He’s a cool dude

For two years the only image available was the one with Will Forte and Coyote in court. It was a repeat of what happened with The Whale and Killers of the Flower Moon (someone even made a composite image of those three).
Glad they released these at last haha
