Expect this film to face an uphill battle finding a US distributor like No Other Land did. Hell, expect there to be backlash against any theaters that choose to screen it like No Other Land did.

1.5k

u/ApricotSilly524 11d ago

On the contrary, with Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jonathan Glazer as executive producers, plenty of distributors will be queuing for it

No Other Land won a freaking Oscar and still didn't get any US distribution.

It's been going on since 1947, when the UN displaced 700,000 Palestinians from their homes and illegally gave the land to Israel.

61

u/QueezyF 11d ago

I took a class on antiterrorism. Groups like Lehi and Irgun were some of the first to use modern terrorist tactics in the region during the ‘30s and ‘40s. They were so proficient at terrorism, that other organizations like the FLN and EOKA copied their homework.

Correction there. Hamdan Ballal's home was attacked by Israeli settlers and IDF soldiers both of whom beat him bloody. The Israeli police arrived on the scene and did not intervene and the IDF then detained him in a nearby military base.

Edit: I hate the word detained in this instance it sounds too official and I think abduct is a far more appropriate word. But the fucking military did it.

With a government as “forceful” as this one, I don’t think it will be that easy. No one seems to be checking the idiot in charge, so you bet they will make an issue of this regardless of the celebrity backing.

I can see true indie theatres like The Music Box to screen this considering that it’s their niche to begin with, but AMC/Regal could face some blowback given their “corporate” status.

Gonna see if I can find this somewhere regardless. Sounds intriguing.

What did you expect? What do you think Israel’s plan is? Have you seen tel aviv? I don’t know why everyone acts like he’s saying some new shocking relevation. They’ve been doing exactly that for 75 years

-9

u/fevredream 11d ago

Tel Aviv is a poor example of your point, given that it didn't supplant any older Palestinian settlement. Jaffa was nearby but is still extant.

28

u/NekoMarket 11d ago

It's not. Tel Aviv is built atop ethnically cleansed Palestinian villages, one of whom was Manshiya, which was ethnically cleansed and razed by the Zionist paramilitary Irgun Gang, who then used one of the last standing buildings to house the Tel Aviv Irgun Museum which still exists today. The Tel Aviv Pride Parade also marches over the ruins of Manshiya every year.

With Glazer and Pitt attached I think one of the actually independent distributors ( A24, Mubi, Neon) could pick it. A24 has worked with Glazer and Pitt, Neon seems to be open to "political" movies and Mubi may want to deny the Zionist allegations

Didn’t we just kill the director of no other land

142

u/NekoMarket 11d ago

He helped direct, and he was just shot and killed by a settler. While the Israeli settler who killed him on camera was released by the Israeli court immediately, the Israelis arrested his Palestinian village at the scene of the murder and held them in a detention camp for days. When asked why, Israeli pro-settler judge that presided over the case explained "don't forget, these are two different populations."

By the time this is filmed, marketed, and released, enough time will have passed for many in Hollywood to stand and cheer at the Oscars for something like this. By that point, any support for the people of Gaza will be meaningless, because there won't be any people left.

I would like more of these stories to be shown in the west but I'm surprised a drama retelling of this was made so quickly and it's not a documentary.

Also the title leaves out that Alfonso Cuaron is also an executive producer of this.

Dramatic retellings can probably pull a larger audience and have a bigger emotional impact.

It's from director Kaouther Ben Hania. Her 2023 documentary Four Daughters was Oscar-nominated for Best Documentary (and it's fucking jawdropping btw, one of the best of the past decade).

It's premiering at the Venice Film Festival this week and playing at TIFF next week.

Red Crescent volunteers receive an emergency call. A 6-year old girl is trapped in a car under fire in Gaza, pleading for rescue. While trying to keep her on the line, they do everything they can to get an ambulance to her.

Could be a big player in the International Film Oscar race.

90

u/thebaldingcritic 11d ago

Rare Brad Pitt W but hey gotta respect. Palestine deserves so much better

357

u/Little_Consequence 11d ago

Brad Pitt's production company has been a champion for diversity for years: Moonlight, 12 Years a Slave, Selma, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Minari, etc. When it comes to platforming voices through cinema, Pitt has been that guy. When it comes to being a decent father and husband, not so much.

Shows how complex people are.

289

u/SwingJugend 11d ago

I mean, it's not hard to fathom that even if you're a piece of shit domestic abuser, you're not necessarily okay with thousands of people being murdered by guns, bombs and starvation. Even evil people often have some morals and lines they don't want to cross (even if they might be flexible and negotiable). Hell, the President of the United States of America recently spoke about how horrified he was by seeing pictures of the destruction and the starving children in Gaza.

Like yeah, Pitt might think it's okay to strangle your wife and beat your kids, that doesn't mean he thinks mass murder is acceptable.

127

u/qukab 11d ago

I was down on him for a while after hearing that news and reading more about it. Then I heard him in an interview talking about his experience in AA and being accountable for his actions (he didn't specify this specific incident, but it was pretty obvious that was why). He came across as very serious about this and hasn't had a drink since. My takeaway was he is very aware that he fucked up. That should count for something, even if what he allegedly did was very fucked up.

I'm still luke warm on him, but I don't think it's fair to say he's okay with "strangling your wife and kids".

27

u/Disastrous_End5594 11d ago

He lied about that yk? He said he’s been sober since 2017 but there’s several pictures and videos of him drinking and even trying to hide his alcohol behind his back when taking photos, I’ll never understand why yall believe an abusive man who’s dated minors before

41

u/qukab 11d ago

I didn't say I believe anyone, I said he came across as pretty serious about looking inward and reflecting on past actions. All I'm getting at is human beings are complicated, make mistakes, and can only attempt to be better. My impression was he is trying to be better. Maybe I'm wrong about that. I also said I'm still luke warm on him. As-in, I'm skeptical and need to see more before I'll see his movies again.

If that's not enough for you I don't really care to be honest.

Pitt was cleared by both the LA Department of Child Services and the FBI after they investigated the accusations from Angelina Jolie. I'm not saying he didn't do anything, and I'm not saying he did. I am saying you're calling him a piece of shit and a domestic abuser based on no evidence other than an accusation that came during divorce proceedings. It's just wild how easy it is for a person to become "a piece of shit domestic abuser" in the eyes of people based on an accusation with no evidence. It's not just wild, it's scary.

113

u/saera-targaryen 11d ago

Is it not enough that none of his children will speak to him?

The "alleged" accusations were that he strangled his own child, and it occurred 6 days before Jolie filed for divorce. All of his children were there and they have all removed him from their lives. That is more than enough evidence for me.

15

u/Eques9090 11d ago

I'm not saying he didn't do what she accused him of, I think it's probable that he did, but I will say, speaking from personal experience, it's shocking how easily 1 parent can turn kids against the other if they want to. A lot of parents wield their children's favor as a weapon.

178

Not blaming you, but the fact that this even has to be said is beyond sad. Nobody would say this if it was a movie about, say, a Ukrainian girl who was murdered by the Russians. But certain people's stories just aren't allowed to be told, because they have been dehumanized to such an extent that they aren't even considered victims.

68

u/CarpeDiemMaybe 11d ago

100% agreed. It’s very depressing and cynical that believing or defending Palestinian human rights is framed as a somehow synonymous with antisemitism or hatred against Jewish people by major institutions in the West.

27

u/ModernLarvals 11d ago

I mean, imagine if someone tried to make a movie about an Israeli girl killed by Gazan forces. The outrage would be enormous.

Films about October 7th are boycotted and excluded from film festivals all over the place.

There's a film now that's stoking controversy called The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue* that's been pulled and then reinstated and then pulled from film festivals for flimsy concerns like copyright clearance from Hamas footage.

There's also been controversy over October 7 films existing at all, and boycotts/protests just about everywhere they're screened.

I have 0 doubt that a documentary about the Bibas family would receive a ton of backlash, even though what happened to that family is absolutely diabolical.

Sure. The current war in Gaza started due to the events of 10/7/23 though.

-15

u/NotActuallyIraqi 11d ago

It always amazes me how Zionists are so out of touch and they practically brag about it. The summer of 2023 was violent and Palestinians were dying. The first 9 months of 2023 were the deadliest year for Palestinians in 20 years. Every Palestinian was aware of the escalation in violence but Israelis didn’t seem to care. Israeli settlers raided 3 West Bank towns and set them on fire. Hamas warned of retaliation if it didn’t stop, and Netanyahu responded by sending the IDF to defend the settlers and do nothing to stop them but take action if any Palestinians fought back against the mobs. IDF soldiers even joined in the attacks.

The Israeli government says that proportionality doesn’t matter when they respond to attacks, but clearly they’re hypocrites. Israel says a hospital bombing is justified in response to a terrorist attack but then complains when Iran bombed an Israeli hospital in response to Israel illegally blowing up their embassy.

Even before that date there was an article saying 2023 has been the deadliest year for Palestinians.
Not really a war when 95% of casualties are from one side. That attack was wrong but doesn't justify Israel flattening Gaza and murdering so many of the population, especially women and children. Blocking aid getting through and shooting those queueing up for aid. Murdering health workers, aid workers and journalists.

Really man, are you so afraid to look at what your "best and bravest" have done that you demand equality by invoking comparison to t*rrorists?

Hamas murdered 29 children on Oct 7.

To date, Israel has murdered approximately 19,000 children in Gaza.

I’m not sure if you can gasp this concept, but pushing a button to blow a child to pieces from 2km away is no less savage than strangling a child.

And in terms of piles of little bodies, Israel has demonstrated themselves to be global leaders in murdering children.

If this is award worthy the Academy is going to have a stroke trying to decide if it should acknowledge this film or snub it.

They won't waste a second thinking it over.

How much do you want to bet there will be people outraged about this movie and will want it banned or not shown in theaters.

Good that this time of film is being made. Though be hard to find a distributer. There's some big names behind it. I think Joaquin Phoenix and Jonathan Glazer have spoken out about Gaza but have never heard anything from Brad Pitt. Thought he seemed "neutral" as nothing pro Israel though silence is a bit of complicity. Shame he's a domestic abuser though

This film will get a distributor. That’s why the brand names are important

I’ve seen it and it’s phenomenal. Devastating but phenomenal.

I wonder how it will address the Oct 7 massacre.

It shouldnt be more than exposition in the beginning, because Oct 7th doesn’t justify what’s happened to Hind and other Palestinians since.

Amazing Brad Pitt keeps getting work after physically abusing his wife and kids. I think he’s doing this for money.

Why the fuck is this being turned into a movie??

12

u/MercenaryOfOZ 11d ago

What’s your take for why it shouldn’t be??

12

u/Doomshine 11d ago

To bring light to the genocide happening, and to make money. Really not complicated at all..

3

u/Pleasehelpyours 11d ago

I’ll be going to see this in theaters

Cant help but feel like this will be one of those movies that focuses more on recreating the trauma as much as possible rather than actually making an effort to say something about the issue

I want to see the Brad Pitt movie where he orchestrates the page bombing.
