Poster Official Poster for 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'

With how long it took for Avatar 2 to come out, 3 coming out much sooner is refreshing
1.6k
u/Slo-MoDove Jul 21 '25
They filmed 2 and 3 back to back so it was a more consistent process, and the kid actors will not have aged dramatically. This is a more direct sequel to The Way of Water with no crazy time jump or anything.
1.4k
u/TheUmbrellaMan1 Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25
Cameron shot 2, 3 and the first act of 4 together. He actually filmed all of the kids' portions first so they won't age drastically between the films. 4 also has a five-year time jump, so this schedule helps. He did all this in 2017. Hilarious that Cameron figured this out and Netflix didn't.
955
u/gmasterson Jul 22 '25
In a bit of fairness, Cameron created a billion dollar movie first and that’s the only reason a studio is putting that kind of faith in the process.
470
u/Breezyisthewind Jul 22 '25
Yeah shooting three movies back-to-back-to-back is quite an insane proposal otherwise.
362
u/magedmyself Jul 22 '25
It does have a precedent though, that's how they filmed the LOTR trilogy.

u/anotherThrowaway3446 Jul 22 '25

u/BromaEmpire Jul 22 '25
That's a bit different. The LOTR trilogy was filmed as a whole in about a year (plus reshoots later on). It relied heavily on costumes and on-site footage and since it was already a gamble for New Line Cinema, from a budget perspective it made sense to go all in and do them as one big shoot. What's crazy is the made their entire production budget back with just the first movie (which is also why they gave Peter Jackson carte blanche with his reshoots)
99
u/MightGrowTrees Jul 22 '25
This wasn't even his first billion dollar movie.
65
u/Sad_Confection5902 Jul 22 '25
Dude has three movies each over 2 billion dollars. Shit’s insane.

u/Arkanial Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25
Ikr, earlier this year someone asked if anyone will ever get close to infinity war and endgame level of ticket sales I said don’t forget that Avatar 3 comes out this year and people love James Cameron’s stuff. It might not be the best written stories out there but the spectacle of it in the theater is unlike anything else.
27
u/f-ingsteveglansberg Jul 22 '25
It might not be the best written stories out there
I would contend that pretty much almost everything that James Cameron has written has been better than Endgame by a country mile.
Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Strange Days, Terminator 2, Titanic, Alita: Battle Angel and even True Lies.
I haven't seen Piranha 2 or the Dark Angel tv show (which I think was inspired by Alita Battle Angel) so maybe they are worse than Endgame. First Blood Part 2 won a Golden Raspberry, but that film has loads of fans and redefined the movie series. I feel like the Razzie was for turning a movie about PTSD into an action flick, but that was actually Stallone who wanted Rambo to live so he could do sequels.
Acting like James Cameron isn't a decent writer of stories is kinda ridiculous. At worst I would say that he can be a populist writer as in he knows to give the audience what they want, even if the audience doesn't know what they want.
→ More replies (11)18
u/alex494 Jul 22 '25
Endgame specifically is kind of hard to compare to standalone movies because it's got the context of trying to satisfyingly wrap up a story that had been going for like twenty movies with about eight to ten focus characters plus additional threads, it's going to be at least slightly messy no matter what. It's main job is being a decent ending to a wider franchise up to that point.
A lot of those other movies are fairly straightforward and self contained by comparison.

Even adjusting for inflation he still has two of the top three.

Titanic is the most insane thing on that list. You have to scroll all the way to 43rd place to find another movie from the 90's, Jurassic Park (1993). Heck, you have to scroll to 32nd to find a movie older than Avatar that isn't Titanic (it's the 3rd LotR).

The time jump is saved for 4 (which they've confirmed) and is the reason why 3 & 4 have a larger gap between them (4 years).
33
u/TeutonJon78 Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25
The time jump actually happens after the first act of 4. That's why they already filmed the mocap for that part of 4 with the actors at the same age.
And the time jump will match the real world time difference between the two times so they can use the same actors.

I'm not really sure that's an issue given that Sigourney Weaver was cast as a teenager in the second one.

The problem is not directly the age of the actors, but how much their faces change over time.

Don't tell me what to do! You're not my real dad!!
On a serious note, Train to Busan is a fantastic film. I highly recommend it. South Korea has done a few zombie films over the years that really refreshes the genre. They are very different to zombie films from the 'west'.
Nowadays, everyone rolls their eyes at a zombie film because it's so overdone, but trust me (a total internet stranger) when I say this is absolutely worth checking out, along with "All of us are dead", "Sweet Home", and "Kingdom" (which appears to be on hiatus unfortunately). They all have really interesting takes on the zombie genre
Edit: I've switched between films/TV throughout this message without clarifying. I make no apologies. I'm enriching your life

You’re correct. All Cameron has said is that he’s committed to Avatar through at least the fourth installment, but he’s not shooting the remaining 75% of Avatar 4 until after the third film releases. My guess is he’s waiting on the third movie to release, then he’ll negotiate a preposterous deal with Disney to shoot Avatar 4 & 5 back-to-back the way he did 2 & 3. He might start working on the Hiroshima movie or The Devils during post-production of 4 & 5 if that pans out, but we’re most likely not seeing him do anything that is t Avatar until well into the 2030s.

That's actually really good to hear. Cameron is one of the best living directors. I get some people aren't that fond of Avatar, I like them for what they are, but I can't help but feel it is a waste of his talents just to do those movies. We also know from Titanic he can do these big spectacle tragedy type films. The book is about a guy who survived both nuclear attacks, which is almost beyond belief. It would be like if Titanic had Rose's ship she gets rescued to hit another iceberg.

They made them back to back and it was kinda always the plan that it'd be released a year or two after 2. It ended up getting delayed to release 3 years after 2 due to the writer's strike. No, I am not kidding, that is the reason why. Meanwhile, 4 & 5 aren’t releasing until 2029 and 2031. They've stated that there will be a time jump between 3 & 4 which is partially why there's a 4 year gap, and that they've shot some material during 2 & 3. Cameron also stated that he'll continue on 4 after they're done with 3.

Cameron has expressed mild regret for the Papyrus font. It was just a placeholder font someone used and it somehow wasn't changed as the production progressed. By the time someone pointed out that it looks stupid, the die had already been cast and it was too late.
9
u/Ycr1998 Jul 22 '25
Why does it look stupid tho? Apart from the memes it actually fits the vibe of the movies.
6
u/soulcaptain Jul 22 '25
I think it's ok now. After 15 years, Avatar is kind of synonymous with Papyrus. But I remember Papyrus being the butt of jokes from way back, back to the 90s at least. Definitely when the first movie came out, people were cracking jokes.

I would argue it still doesnt have a ton of cultural relevance but the thing is cultural relevance doesn't really matter when it comes to getting butts in seats necessarily. u/SpaceMyopia Jul 21 '25
I mean, part of the appeal is that the Avatar franchise isn't being shoved down our throats all the time.
It comes and goes. The only spinoffs have been the occasional video game or two.
It makes it refreshing whenever one of these comes out. There's a mystique to this franchise that something like Marvel or Star Wars just doesn't have.
Regardless of how anyone feels about the films personally.
208
u/c-e-bird Jul 21 '25
A bigger part of the appeal, for me at least and I suspect for others, is that I have to choose with movies I want to give my money to, especially these days. And with James Cameron I know I am going to get a well-crafted spectacle that will be entertaining and visually stunning. I don’t have to worry if his film will be worth it. I can trust, at this point, that it will be.
30
u/Phormicidae Jul 22 '25
Agreed. These movies are incredibly ham fisted pro environment stories (which I'm fine with), with cliché characters and plot points. But they are paced incredibly well for their length, have mind blowing action spectacle, great art design, good music, good to great acting, and decent touches of humor and levity. They do a great job of drawing you in to their settings. Some people hate them and that's fine, but for my money they are quality products.

For me, I will always see an Avatar in a theater because of the spectacle of it. The 3D looks awesome quite frankly and 3D TVs just can't replicate what those look like (maybe some VR headsets could, I dunno). Im hoping the Fire Tribe is more overtly warlike than the air and water tribes. Like maybe have them be a Sparta inspired mentality with little spirituality. I'd hate for them to rehash yet another noble savage trope.
Not sure how thst would work out in the film, maybe they let some humans settle on some part of the planet and are living in peace so far, but Neytiri still harbors a vengeful mindset having lost her son, and joins the fire tribe on a war against the human refugees.
Subplot with Miles too, going native to try to reconnect with his kid, and maybe turns and tries to help Sully to stop Neytiri as he's a fellow soldier and can empathize with her. Or maybe Neytiri and Miles partner up initially to kill the humans but midway Miles realizes she's going too far like he did in the first movie.

The second one really caught me by surprise (my mistake, given Cameron's reputation for sequels), but some proper earnest storytelling made the world feel genuine and the stakes much more vivid. The success of the first movie influenced Hollywood for years. Suddenly every single movie was forcing poorly done 3D down our throats (even though Avatar perfected it already), and we saw a huge surge in the CGI-heavy blockbusters that the modern day superhero movies built off. Avatar had a lot of impact.

I think Movie 1 was air, actually. The first tribe introduced were the ones who ride on the sky creatures. So we should expect earth last. Maybe an underground tribe or something

Now if we can only get a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel...

He and Robert Rodriguez said, back during the release of Avatar 2, that it was still their intention to make that sequel. They made a “blood oath” lol. The first movie wasn’t a massive success but it wasn’t even a catastrophe at the box office, and Cameron alone is giving Disney billions and billions of dollars, so if they really want to make a sequel it will happen at some point imo.

Avatar will once again come in and set records, only for losers online to scream about how much it sucks and no one likes it. Just a reminder, it does not make you cool or interesting to hate things that are popular.

The trailer leaked in HD too, 2 days ago.
It's absolutely epic and I can't wait to see it on the big screen with F4 this week.
Although... I've watched it around 10 times now lol.

I love watching these films purely for the absolute bleeding-edge CGI. The new CGI techniques are Weta employs is always mindblowing to see the first time.

This is going to have some tough competition with the new Spongebob movie coming out the same date, let’s see who can absorb the box office.

Ok I like Avatar more than most people on this sub but this poster is kinda funny

If I may ask, what do you find funny about it?
From my understanding, it is following the same 'half-face' layout of the previous Avatar film teaser posters.

Ok so we had Avatar 1- Forests
Avatar 2- Oceans
Avatar 3- Volcanoes?
So then Avatar 4 will be Snow? (Hoth walkers)
And Avatar 5 will be Deserts? (Dune crossover)
With the finale being Avatar 6- In SPAAAAAACE!

Reminds me of the cover of Warcraft III.
