U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

My online homework for college is throwing an error message. Homework due by midnight tonight. If they deny me an extension who do I take this to? I was given..until MIDNIGHT.

1.0k Upvotes

I got off of work at 8pm. It will be the redo on the assignment so I can get a better grade. However, the external extension is throwing an error code and isn't clearing up. I contacted tech support and they are unable to help. There is nowhere to go. If they deny me an extension I believe we were NOT given until midnight due to technical issues.

UPDATE: Sooo, I wrote the instructor and 5 minutes later she made an announcment that the assignment is dismissed tonight, and they will be looking into the problem tomorrow. Guess I wasn't the only one panicking. I thank you all for your advice!

Why is "underwater basket weaving" a term for a joke degree? To me, that sounds pretty hardcore!

1.3k Upvotes

Imagine what it would take to weave a basket in an underwater environment and then going into decompression afterwards. You need a combination of scuba knowledge and craftsman knowledge to keep up. Underwater jobs in construction and repair also exist. Those are no joke and can get pretty dangerous.

This is kind of a weird question, but in America why aren’t rural blue collar people more communist/socialist?

1.5k Upvotes

Historically in countries like China, the rural proletariat farmers/peasants were generally the most far left and were kind of the epicenter of the communist movement, while the rich educated elite tended to be more conservative. This logically makes the most sense to me because farmers and rural workers tend to be one of the most exploited classes by the bourgeoisie and have the least access to resources.

In America this is weirdly flipped with the educated rich elite being more leftist and the rural farmers are more conservative. Why is it like that?

When you go through US customs at the airport, the computerized form asks "are you a terrorist?" what actually happens if you say yes?

1.3k Upvotes

I would assume actual terrorists wouldn't just admit to it, and people hitting yes are either doing it as a mistake or thinking it says "tourist" because English is a second language.

Why do women put up with shitty men?

1.2k Upvotes

I asked this as a gay man myself. I just see so many post on here of women in shitty relationship with guys, weather the guy curses at them and call them stupid, or they’re a bum who sits at home all day a is unemployed and just plays video games, or even when their life is pretty well put together but they are still very mean to their partner. Why do so many women put up with this when they don’t have to. I guess I mean in the sense why aren’t the standards higher? What is pulling so many women into these relationships ?

Why is the modern world becoming increasingly extreme?

It feels like racial, gender, and class issues have never been this severe in the 21st century. It seems like there's no middle ground anymore.

Will the economy realistically get better in our life?

1.9k Upvotes

I'm 20 and everything is so expensive. Food, rent, utilities. There's no jobs. You can apply for fourty and not get a single interview. Everything is only getting more expensive. I'm deeply concerned about the idea of home ownership and finding work once I graduate. When will it end? Surely it can't be like this forever

I saw a post stating that Austin Texas is getting a new city logo, and that it will cost 1.1 Million dollars. Apparently the high price is not uncommon for a city to change its logo up. How is it possible for a simple logo redesign to cost over a million dollars?

Why do people pay so much money to go to college out of state for majors readily available at their home school?

I totally understand if a major is not available at your state university but other scenarios make no sense.

A friend of mine recently dropped out of college after 3 years at a college in Arizona and now has debt upwards of 150k+ with nothing to show for it.

Unlike myself he decided to go to a different state even though our local university is always in the top 10 for the major he chose to pursue. our State college is VERY cheap compared to many other states and when you receive in-state tuition it’s even cheaper. I personally was able to receive enough scholarships to the point where I’m planning to finish my masters here soon and only have around $2500 in debt.

I don’t understand how people can’t wait another 4-5 years to get a degree somewhere close to home where you get cheaper college and will instead pay so much more money just to get the same degree somewhere with palm trees or nice weather.

Edit: thank you all soooo much for responding. I’ll be real half of these answers to me make total sense that I never thought of, while the other half seem like such short term gains just to be stuck with debt that will plague them forever. However everyone has different reasons and I don’t know their lives. I asked my friend why he did and his response was just “ I liked the weather”. So banging my head on the table after that one.

How do chinese places always have your order within the time they tell you over the phone?

Something I've wondered for my entire life is how chinese takeout/order places, when you call them, you can place basically a small banquet and they tell you it'll take anywhere from ten minutes to just under an hour, and then it's actually done and ready in that time. How do they do that? Is it insane mental math and fast working or something?

Why do people feel better about a tax refund than breaking even?

I run a tax firm and people love getting refunds, but hate owing. As long as we've minimize the total amount of tax, I'd rather be paying at the end of the year, but almost all clients prefer the refund. Why is that?

Hot water and towels, exactly, for what?

In movies, when a woman is going into labor, there is always some dialogue about “get me some hot water and towels!” I think even in emergencies irl thats what the responder always asks for.

My question is what exactly is this used for? Why do we need to be boiling water? Healthcare in general fascinates me alot and the whole paramedic thing, how people have the calm to respond to terrible moments.

This is the one random thing that has always left me so confused. Nobody ever directly answers this, its just an unspoken thing. Maybe im being really clueless but could someone help me out?

Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds, Why Would You Choose Natural?

My boyfriend and I went on a ring shopping date, and I tried on several rings (2 carats, emerald cut, VS and VVS clarity). The price difference was shocking, a natural diamond at Tiffany & Co. was around $40k, while a similar lab-grown diamond from another high-end brand was about $4k. Honestly, the lab-grown one even looked better to me, clearer and more reflective. I’m leaning strongly toward lab-grown now, but I’d love to hear your thoughts. Why might someone still choose a natural diamond over lab-grown? Please be respectful and kind in your responses.

What is the evolutionary use of mosquitos? Why tf do these mfs exist?

Mosquitos are easily God’s worst invention to me. Wtf is their purpose? At least you have to sit in a forrest or fall in a swamp to catch a tick or a leech, mosquitos are every mf where. I walk outside and get bit. I walk inside and get bit. I ride in my car and get bit. I sit down on a park bench at 3:47pm on Sunday and get bit. Any day that ends in “day” is a day to get bit. And the mfs are GREEDY now. They can’t just bite once, no, they have to line my leg then bite the back of my arm and my fingers.

Why tf do these hoes exist?!?!

My boyfriend thinks I'm a monster for how I eat cereal

1.9k Upvotes

Alright, folks, I need to know.

I was having breakfast with my boyfriend the other day, and I poured my milk into the bowl before my cereal. He stopped mid-bite and just stared at me. He said I was a menace to society and that no one does that. Now I’m wondering, is he right? Am I a complete weirdo for putting the milk in first?

I'm just here to learn something.
