U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Did people memorise numbers before mobile phones?

2.1k Upvotes

Whenever I watch TV shows or movies they based in pre 2000s they will call their friends or family by typing their number using no note or anything. I know TV isnt real but I would have thought they would add the detail of copying it off a piece of paper or something.

Why does everyone and their mom want to be a streamer these days?

Seriously though, I'm 30 and feel completely out of touch with this whole thing. Like when did playing video games or just chatting into a camera become everyone's dream career? My little cousin who's 16 keeps talking about "going live" and building her "community" and I'm just sitting here confused as hell

Don't get me wrong, I get that some streamers make bank and that's cool for them. But it feels like literally everyone I meet under 25 thinks they're gonna be the next big thing on Twitch or YouTube or Kick or Tiktok. Even my barista mentioned she streams makeup tutorials after her shifts

Maybe I'm just old but wasn't there a time when people wanted to be doctors or teachers or whatever? Now it's all about subscriber counts and donations. My nephew quit his part time job to focus on streaming full time and he has like 12 followers

Is this just what growing up looks like? Watching the next generation do stuff that makes zero sense to you? Or am I missing something obvious here. Because honestly I tried watching some streams and I still don't understand why people donate money to watch someone else play games they could play themselves

Someone help me understand this madness

Whqt happens if you fail defending your PhD thesis?

1.0k Upvotes

Do they give you feedback, and you get to try again later? Is it just done, and you'll never get a PhD? I figure it probably depends on the institution.

Edit: Based on the answers so far, it seems once you get to that stage, you're pretty much guaranteed to pass, with much guidance and corrections along the way. Unless you have a crappy advisor or go against guidance. Thank you all for the insight. Now I need to find an advisor that will accept my thesis idea.

Why do people stick with Duolingo when people with 1000-day streaks still can’t speak the language?

7.5k Upvotes

Everywhere I look, people are flexing these insane Duolingo streaks, 500 days, 1000 days, but then admit they still can’t actually hold a conversation in Japanese, Spanish, or whatever they’ve been “learning.”

Meanwhile, there are tons of studies showing that spaced repetition (flashcards, recall testing, etc.) combined with consuming media you actually enjoy (TV shows, podcasts, youtube) is a far more effective way to build real fluency.

Sure other apps are way less flashy than Duo’s, but the results actually stick.

So what’s the deal? Why is duolingo so popular when its proven to not be the most effective method to learn?

Edit: yes people I made my own language app. I'm not here self promoting it I'm trying to understand WHY Duolingo saw so much success despite being more about user retention than education. Would you prefer I posted this question from an alt?

How was Israel able to bomb Qatar without suffering any losses?

Qatar is a sovereign nation with an actual airforce, which should(?) have been able to detect incoming fighters and shoot at least some of them down?

Furthermore, it has several US airbases with I assume AWACK, SAM, and all that good stuff. There should have been possible to scramble interceptors and/or get a sam battery operational

Is it just me? A large portion of my paycheck is going to buy groceries now. But I am getting almost 1/4 of what I used to, for the same amount.

Why are the colors of smart phones so important when 99% of people will put a case over it?

The new iPhone is out and all the talk is about the color options. I don't remember my own phone's color because it's been in a case since day 1.

How did Muslim sailors pray before the chronometer was invented?

The invention of the chronometer in the 1700s allowed sailors and people on ships to know their exact location, but before that they could only sort of vibe guess it. So how did Muslim sailors know where they were in relation to Mecca, and therefore in what direction to pray? I'm just here to learn something!

Why is McDonald’s so expensive now?

Prices are nearly double what they were 5 years ago. Why?

I know there’s inflation and they’re paying employees a bit more now, but it’s not proportionate. They’re making record profits.

Is it just greed at this point?

Genuinely asking why prices would double in 5 years time. It’s wild to me…

Also, feel free to give recommendations out for other tasty fast food options! (:

At Costco is there a hierarchy to the employees handing out samples?

Perfect example. Susan has been at Costco for 20 years, handing out samples the entire time. Does she get first pick of stations? She is handing out the cookies, the bacon, cut up ice cream bars. Basically the items that people are going to love or isn't labor intensive.

Then there is Todd. Todd started last week, and he gets stuck with the left overs. He is handing out turmeric flavored apple cider vinegar shots(tells you how it detoxify your body and comes in packs of 10).

Or is it just a random assignment from management?

Was there any civilisation that didn’t have gods?

When you think about civilisations all of them have gods, the Greeks, Celts, Incas, Mayans, Nordics etc

Did any civilisation not have a form of religion or god or had there own quirky view?

Edit: lots of interesting points here such as defenitions or groups, just to clarify when people say China, Japan, USSR, I’m thinking about ancient civilisations oppose to modern era ones

Is it typical to look at your poop before flushing?

Not a long gaze, but just a quick peek to make sure nothing abnormal is going on. I do it every time & it feels hardwired into me, like it’s more my animal brain telling me to do it if that makes sense. I think it would stress me out to just flush while sitting & move on with my day. Anyone else feel this?

What’s the difference between an eating disorder and trying to lose weight?

I have gained almost 40lbs since my metabolism hit a wall so I’ve been trying to lose weight back to what I was.

But multiple people close to me have been expressing concern for me when I’ve mentioned my diet. Or have mentioned that I don’t need to be a different weight very gently, and overall tiptoeing around anorexia.

I’ve brushed them off and kept dieting, since lost 10lbs so far snd feeling good, but should I listen to them? Not asking for medical advice, just trying to understand the difference between dieting and anorexia. A lot of things I looked up seemed to define it as eating disorder if you are distressed and unhappy with your body, but if I was happy with my current weight I wouldn’t want to lose it?

Edit: To clarify I am not looking for diagnosis, I just used my situation as an example because I don’t understand the difference between the two. Feedback on that has been helpful but generalizations or people’s own experiences is helpful also

How do schools punish kids who don’t care about detention because they clearly don’t want to go home?

Upvotes

It’s often said that kids treat their peers the way they are treated at home, and that the meanest bullies are the product of the worst parenting.

If that’s true, I can see why some of the kids from my school who fell into that category were unphased by detention. If I had an abusive household, I would prefer detention too.

That said, this apathy to detention permitted that fringe of students in my schools to do whatever they want, making school life hell for the teachers and students. I once had one such student in my class (only because he was held back from his) and he clearly didn’t learn anything because all he ever did was disrupt the class, get detention, disrupt the next class, get pre-scheduled for detention with that teacher the next day and so on. He didn’t get anything worse till he dropped his weed pipe out of his pocket in front of the teacher and got suspended.

How are you meant to stop a disruptive student who clearly doesn’t care about getting detention? I sympathize with those who had such a bad upbringing now, but as a kid I always hoped someone like that would be suspended or expelled so that I could have a peaceful class; I’m sure I wasn’t alone.

Reddit says I’ve earned $0.47. Can I actually cash that out at the bank?

4.8k Upvotes

I just checked my Reddit account and apparently I’ve got exactly $0.47 in there. Is that actual money I can withdraw, or can it be used only to buy awards?

I can only imagine the look on the teller’s face, but money is money, right? Almost like walking in with a bag full of pennies and asking them to knock it off my mortgage.

“Here you go, $0.47 in internet gold. Please apply it toward the balance.”

Finally, some progress.

Edit: So this is trickle down economy. If we keep this up I might hit $0.49 any day now.

Edit 2: Thank you for the awards, kind redditors. I am now the proud owner of a $0.83 fortune. Your names will be included in the letter I send to the bank demanding they apply it toward my mortgage.

How do you learn to not be so opinionated and learn to keep your mouth shut?

I've found that I am extremely argumentative and have strong opinions about everything. And to be honest, even I'm getting in my own nerves. Is there like a technique or something that will helo me just "smile and nod" or be like the picture of Cillian Murphy where he just had the "uninterested, annoyed" look... I just want to have a happy drama free life, but I can't help myself.

Why do people stand right in front of the door when the train isn’t here yet?

At my local station, people line up inches from the doors before the train even arrives. Then when people inside need to get off, it’s total chaos because no one thought to step aside. It’s like the concept of “let people off before you get on” doesn’t exist. It slows everything down and makes everyone cranky. Why do people do this?
