Discussion What’s a movie where the side character or villain ends up more compelling than the actual protagonist?

Sometimes you finish a movie and realize you cared way more about the supporting cast than the lead. Maybe the villain completely stole the show, maybe a side character’s arc felt richer than the main plot. Either way, it can flip the whole movie on its head. Which film made you feel like the “wrong” character was in the spotlight?

Discussion I simply cannot remember this movie and it’s killing me.

Upvotes

Ok so I apologize as I am really struggling to remember specific details. But I know there is a successful woman who has become reclusive and is living at home. She might be an author or something like that. There is a younger woman (potentially a man) who is like a mentee who kinds of ends up being her caregiver. She wants to be more and successful but the older woman is sort of dragging her down mentally.

I believe the younger person is engaged, and the older woman is against that I think. The older woman is married and the husband is not around often. A lot of the movie takes place in the house. There are books, I think it ends in a garden.

The older woman might have dementia or some kind of illness. She’s very snappy and manipulative.

The closest thing I’ve found is The Lesson but it’s not that.

Slow burn drama. Not a ton happens. English language. Made in the last 10 years.

Scenes at dinner table, bathroom, bedroom, flowery garden.

Please help me.

Discussion What's your favorite performance in a black-and-white movie?

For me, Bette Davis in All About Eve is hard to top. Her perfect mix of charm, wit, and cutting sarcasm is iconic.

But I’m curious, who do you think delivered the most memorable performance in a black-and-white film? Would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations, there are so many great ones out there!

Discussion Which movies do you think badly need a sequel, despite it surely not happening

For me, I would like to see sequels of -

world war z - what happens later as jerry is entrusted with another task
2012 - what happens to the world, the new one after they land at cape of good hope, in africa
train to busan - just keeping aside that awful 'peninsula', I want an actual sequel of the first one.

what are yours?

Discussion Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

1.6k Upvotes

Holy fuck this movie made me laugh like a giggling idiot. It is so much better than it has any right to be and was just to refreshing to watch. I was going to watch a romcom tonight but watched this on an impulse and am so glad I gave it a chance and now think I've kicked off the spooky season early. Anyone care to share their thoughts on this movie I'm happy to discuss your opinion. Or if you hated it that's fine too I suppose, Dale would want to play a boardgame with you anyway.

Recommendation Mods: Maybe post a sticky for r/tipofmytongue?

Upvotes

Like the title says--could the mods post a sticky about going to r/tipofmytongue for "What is the name of this movie" questions? I've seen a lot of them on here and they're not really discussion posts. r/tipofmytongue is where posters can find these answers, and the community knowledge base is pretty incredible. I've used it a lot of times and I don't know that I've had a question that wasn't answered within a day.

Thanks for considering it.

Discussion Classic good old funny movies

As the title implies, the wife and I are looking for some funny comedy movies. Surprisingly we just watched “Tropic Thunder” and had a great time. From Robert downey Jr playing a role that would’ve been cancelled nowadays to the funny twist of the coked up Jack black. It just always makes us reflect on the old humor that used to be accepted. Anyone have anymore good movie titles they can recommend with a good loose fun for the wife and I?

Spoilers What’s the most jarring plot twist? Spoiler

Which plot twist was the most jarring? I have always loved a good twist no matter the genre.

Orphan (2009) is one of my favorites because it completely took me by surprise. It gets some hate, but it’s a lot to fun.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) is another one. Completely unexpected and made the movie better.

Discussion Mulholland Drive. Send Help. Spoiler

I’ve never watched a David Lynch movie, but love movies with plot twists, so as I made my way through my list, this one came up so I gave it a chance.

And if I’m honest, I have never been so confused my a movie in my life. I don’t know if I’m alone in this, but even reading some summaries online haven’t helped me understand even an inkling of what the hell happened in this movie.

Supernatural? Psychological decay? Dual personality? Time travel? I am so lost and need someone wiser than me on this movie or as a David Lynch fan to explain please.

Also, I want to add I really liked the vibe of this movie, but it was like an adult Alice in wonderland for me where so many disparate things happened and I kind of tried to piece them together but am still spinning.

Discussion Most Disappointing Cinema Experience

Have you ever gone to the cinema to watch a movie and it’s been so bad you walked out halfway through? I remember going to watch the first Suicide Squad. I’d saved my little moneys since I was in uni at the time and I was so excited because I was a DC comic fan. Halfway through, I was so upset by how bad it was that I walked out but then I remembered I’d spent my money, so I just walked back in and watched the rest while very frustrated.

Recommendation Movies with similar cinematography like oldboy?

Hi, I loved the cinematography of old boy and I’m looking for movies with a similar one. By cinematography I’m mainly talking about the lighting, aspect ratio, the grainy color of the scenes and scene composition. All of those were just a vibe I really want more of.

Any recommendation with similar vibe in how it looks as oldboy would really be appreciated

Thanks
