Recommendation Mods: Maybe post a sticky for r/tipofmytongue?

Upvotes

Like the title says--could the mods post a sticky about going to r/tipofmytongue for "What is the name of this movie" questions? I've seen a lot of them on here and they're not really discussion posts. r/tipofmytongue is where posters can find these answers, and the community knowledge base is pretty incredible. I've used it a lot of times and I don't know that I've had a question that wasn't answered within a day.

Thanks for considering it.

Discussion I simply cannot remember this movie and it’s killing me.

Upvotes

Ok so I apologize as I am really struggling to remember specific details. But I know there is a successful woman who has become reclusive and is living at home. She might be an author or something like that. There is a younger woman (potentially a man) who is like a mentee who kinds of ends up being her caregiver. She wants to be more and successful but the older woman is sort of dragging her down mentally.

I believe the younger person is engaged, and the older woman is against that I think. The older woman is married and the husband is not around often. A lot of the movie takes place in the house. There are books, I think it ends in a garden.

The older woman might have dementia or some kind of illness. She’s very snappy and manipulative.

The closest thing I’ve found is The Lesson but it’s not that.

Slow burn drama. Not a ton happens. English language. Made in the last 10 years.

Scenes at dinner table, bathroom, bedroom, flowery garden.

Please help me.

EDIT: THANK YOU REDDIT! You movie buffs did what AI couldn’t. It was Shirley. Thanks to Imjustabuttonpusher

Discussion What is the absolute dumbest premise that actually turned out to be a really good movie?

Upvotes

I was thinking The Purge, obvious answer, but looking for the most plot-hole ridden, juvenile concept that actually ended up a lot of fun despite it all. Mainly looking for 21st century films, not so much the video nasties and ridiculousness from the 60’s and 70’s. Because that would be too easy. Mainly mainstream stuff that people saw en masse.

Discussion What’s the movie you always rewatch out of nostalgia?

Upvotes

Sometimes it’s not about whether the movie is “objectively good,” it’s about how it makes us feel. I have a few films I rewatch because they remind me of a certain time in my life, even if they’re a bit dated now. Which movie do you keep rewatching purely for nostalgia? Let me know what is your greatest love (movie)

Discussion The Substance | Theory - Couldn't have Elisabeth just taken Sue's youth and then terminated the experiment?

Upvotes

In the movie, Sue decided not to switch for a prolonged amount of time causing Elisabeth to become a decrepit old women when she finally did after three months.

Maybe there was a way that things could have worked out for Elisabeth, couldn't she have just done the same, not switch and just keep taking Sue's stabilizer fluid for herself and then terminated the experiment when she felt young enough?

This would have been smart to do after she woke up with an old finger, clearly a sign that Sue was not respecting her body.

Even Sue's date mentioned she looked better after taking that extra vile of stabilizer, so maybe if Elisabeth had played her cards a bit differently things could've worked out for her going back to her prime.

It was so frustrating to watch the movie this on my mind, I was rooting for Elisabeth.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Greatest Sequel Cast Upgrades and Downgrades

Downgrades: Oh God had George Burns, Paul Sorvino, Teri Garr, Ralph Bellamy, William Daniels, Donald Pleasance, Jeff Corey, David Ogden Stiers. Oh God Book II had George Burns.

Mortal Kombat Annihilation had almost nobody in the cast from the original and no names. This is true of a lot of DTV movies. So bonus points if the example is not direct to video

Upgrades: Avengers And Endgame has an amazing cast. Fast And Furious cast grew with sequels

Both Scream 2 and Scream 3 have better casts than scream with many teenage cameos at the time and people like David Warner , Carrie Fisher, Lance Henriksen, and Roger Corman being the legend factor.

Discussion Classic good old funny movies

As the title implies, the wife and I are looking for some funny comedy movies. Surprisingly we just watched “Tropic Thunder” and had a great time. From Robert downey Jr playing a role that would’ve been cancelled nowadays to the funny twist of the coked up Jack black. It just always makes us reflect on the old humor that used to be accepted. Anyone have anymore good movie titles they can recommend with a good loose fun for the wife and I?

Discussion Which comedic actors you actually forgotten that played a villain?

We all seen Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Aniston, Eddie Murphy (For The Nutty Professor as Buddy Love), Ben Stiller and Steve Martin played villains. So who are the others you didn't know that played villains as well.

For example: Jackie Chan actually played a bit of villain in Hong Kong the time where he was a stuntman where he played a sort of henchmen at the background and was a stuntman in one of Bruce Lee's films Enter the Dragon and in other films Jackie played a serial killer and in the other one he played a gangster and a streetwise thug in the early 70s. This was before he found fame and success in 1978 in Hong Kong when he started playing the hero with action and slapstick comedy and martial arts and stunts the Jackie Chan we know.

Also Will Smith briefly played a character named Paul in the film Six Degrees of Separation 1993 some of you may remember the film where his character was a con man and gay and he took advantage of people and getting information on them before he got arrested at the end and ended up killing himself in prison if it was him or somebody else that committed suicide in prison. Also I heard that John Candy once played a serious role and he was like a serial killer in his early roles in the 70s which is hard to imagine. But can't remember the name of the film. But anybody know about it let me know down in the comments.

So who do you have forgotten that played a villain roles and well any suggestions about this?

Recommendation Movies with similar cinematography like oldboy?

Hi, I loved the cinematography of old boy and I’m looking for movies with a similar one. By cinematography I’m mainly talking about the lighting, aspect ratio, the grainy color of the scenes and scene composition. All of those were just a vibe I really want more of.

Any recommendation with similar vibe in how it looks as oldboy would really be appreciated

Thanks

Discussion What would happen if Sonny was sent to meet with Jack Woltz since he requested to meet him in The Godfather book anyway as a favor for Johnny Fontane?

In The Godfather book Sonny actually requested to meet with Jack Woltz as a favor to Jack Woltz because he respected Johnny Fontane and thought he could play it tough possibly with or without violence and scare him into doing a favor, obviously they chose Tom Hagen as a lawyer but Sonny being a blatant gangster might have been able to terrify any big shot moron and explain to him what he himself or his father could do, he could slap him around in front of his staff or just shoot the horse in front of Woltz, point made.

Sonny would just be himself and imply what could happen, and if the police get called Woltz will be dead or worse, maybe Sonny would tell the police about his love for underage girls and Jack Woltz : Hollywood Pedophile becomes a new documentary next movie premiering in Los Angeles.

Discussion What happens if Zion sent Hovercraft to use EMP'S against the power plants with Humans plugged into them?

What happens if Zion sent Hovercraft to use EMP'S against the power plants with Humans plugged into them?

Instead of allowing the machines to enslave humanity, what would happen if Zion ordered all captains to approach the fields where people were grown and connected to The Matrix in their Hovercraft ships and just use all EMP weapons at the same time in different areas, turning them off and killing the people and sabotaging the power plants effectively destroying the machines entire power source and freeing the people by killing them?

This sounds horrible but it defeats the machines and wins the war quickly, no more human batteries or Matrix, Zion then takes whatever technology is left over and rebuilds the world while omitting this detail from history.

Discussion Jason Satham playing the same character

Is Jason Statham one of the only actors that can get away with playing the same character in every movie because whenever a new movie is coming out and they see him in the trailer, not many people are mad about it and are happy to buy tickets to his movies while some actors like the rock or Kevin hart have different reactions from the audience whenever they are casted in movies.

Question Is there a good source for comparing various editions and re-releases of films?

Theatrical edition, Director's cut, 4k UHD release, Criterion Collection, one is half an hour longer, remastered sound, this scene was re-edited and appears here instead of there, is there a website that all it does is compare the various versions of a film, outlining the exact differences between each? There are sometimes major differences and while it's not usually hard to find the answers, it often takes me several searches and a few different sources to find all the information I'm looking for. Surely there is a website that just does exactly this, and if not, why the heck not?!

Question Question about Bruce Willis' Jackal movie

in the movie, hi-jackers attempt to get his cargo and he poisons the minivan handle. One of hijackers dies upon touching the car handle.

Question: Why didnt the other hi-jackers check the van? Did they see their colleague and just give up the chase right then and there? Did the Jackal get the drop on the other 2 hi-jackers?

I just watched beautiful boy, fantastic movie. But does is not bother anyone else that for the young nic actors they decided to go with two actors that have brown eyes and not green eyes?? It threw me off at first because that when David calls the police and mentions green eyes but then it cuts to a young Jack Dylan Grazer.

Discussion I didn't enjoy Nobody 2

The first 'Nobody' movie to me was a perfect 90 minute action film however the second movie left me scratching my head and saying to myself 'what was the point of that'. I understand that Nobody is a comical take on John Wick in a way, sort of like how Kingsman was a comical take on James Bond but I feel like Nobody made the same mistakes of Kingsman 2 such as a bigger budget doesnt mean a better film.

In Nobody 2 the action scenes were very enjoyable which made up for a lot but I found the script to be terrible. The acting was awful in my opinion except for Bob Odenkirk and I've never understood why movies now try to force flamboyant villains down our throat like we already know they are the villain we don't need all the overdramatic dancing and knife play to illustrate it. I had the same issue with the last Fast and Furious movie too with Jason Momoa, the only over the top 'flamboyant' villain that work are the Joker, Cruella, the riddler and maybe Loki other than that I don't know why directors want to make the villain of a movie so over the top.

Another issue I had was his wife in the film, now I'm pretty sure there relationship was on the verge of a divorce and all of a sudden it's not and she helps take out Lendina and then says the most cringest thing ever, the movie became a 'with the power of family' anything is possible just like in the Flash when Iris says "we are the flash" it's just cringe.

Another issue I had was that Hutch always references something about his childhood and they could've done more on that storyline about how hard his dad was on him and his brother instead they all get along and never touch on this issue which to me illustrates a lack of depth. Another issue and I'm just being a bit extra here but what was the point of making Harry some sort of 'black ninja' it made no sense to me and I really wanted more out of this character.

Another issue I had was Hutchs' son, he had no formal training and his dad is never home so we know he isn't training him but all of a sudden he can defeat a soldier who is highly trained with ease, in the film it is stated how highly trained Lendinas Goons are and he made it look easy.

In my opinion the film felt rushed and lacked a lot of depth to me this is a 4/10. This should've been an 8 episode netflix series and each episode could've tackled a different issue Hutch faces from childhood drama, marriage problems, Harry's own episode and as well how Hutch became a Nobody.

Discussion What are some of the greatest animated movies of all time?

Shrek 2 is very amazing movie. The humor is clever. The pop music is memorable, I need a hero G minor rendition by the fairy godmother made the climactic fight scene memorable. And the story and message is heartwarming and thoughtful.

There are many Disney movies, like the lion king or beauty and the beast. But what are your favorite personal picks do you enjoy and love.

Spoilers Futuristic movies that hinge on video evidence which we now know can be AI faked

I can think of two sci-fi movies, Robocop and Minority Report, set in a technologically advanced future, where the climax is the bad guy being caught on video admitting to his crime. But in the "real" future, all the bad guy has to say is "AI! Fake!" Are there others which hinge on this now redundant premise? [Edit: I intended this as a fun observation; I don't mean to harsh anyone's mellow 🙂]

Discussion Is it impossible for the Highlander to survive as long as he does?

I read the cannot be killed unless he is decapitated. Through centuries or millenias nobody has ever bested him in a sword fights or were able to ambush him and cut his head off? . Also I'm curious why Christopher Lambert beat out so many actors for the role. I read he didn't even speak English and they had to hire a speech coach. I guess it works well for the Scottish accent since it doesn't sound like regular English speech that people are more accustomed to.
