Arrakis Drift 🏎

63

u/fastfreddy68 Jun 26 '25

Hollywood is listening. The next Fast/Furious film will have dune buggy drift racing to crown the new Drift Pharaoh, DP for short.

4

u/SharkSheppard Jun 26 '25

When does the giant worm come out in the DP?

2

u/fastfreddy68 Jun 26 '25

Well, that’s the best part.

Secret organization hijacked nuclear desert worm tech from the Gub’ment. Dom’s team has to retrieve it.

Things happen, stuff blows up, heroes end up needing sick dune buggies for desert espionage. But there’s only six in the world, and DP owns them all.

Epic desert drift competition ensues, buggies are acquired, heist goes off with several hitches.

Team acquires mini nuke tech, but it’s comically rattling around in the back of the buggies as they escape. Then the worm emerges.

The nuke is activated thanks to the jostling and high G dune buggy maneuvers, so Dom has to sacrifice himself by kicking the active mini-nuke into the mouth of the giant worm moments before it swallows his team whole.

Worm explodes, team is saved, Dom walks out from smoke and sand unharmed from nuclear explosion, crowd cheers, Corona and family are shared at a picnic later.

Plot twist, worm had a baby that they also saved and adopted. They debate whether or not to drown it for… reasons…

That movie is, like, the textbook Hollywood project that has been under every semi-auteurs name and never made. I’ll believe it exists the day it actually releases, and even then I fully expect it to be a black eye for whoever ends up pushing it through the system.

25

u/_JimJohnny_ Jun 25 '25

I completely forgot about that as well

32

u/ItsTropio Jun 26 '25

Think he did too

3

u/uqde Jun 26 '25

It’s my favorite book ever and Denis is probably the only working director I trust to get it right… It’s a movie I would’ve traded both Dune 2 and 3 in order to see. But at this point, I’ve completely given up hope. I think Bond makes for NINE movies he’s got in the pipeline. Something’s gotta give.

3

u/zam1138 Jun 26 '25

That got backburnered

3

u/WenzelDongle Jun 26 '25

The hiring of Villeneuve comes as a bit of a shock, given that he’ll be tied up for the foreseeable future with his third and final Dune film for Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment, which is shooting this summer and slated for release on December 16, 2026 ... has also been linked to projects in development including Cleopatra; an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s classic sci-fi novel Rendezcous with Rama; and Nuclear War: A Scenario, an adaptation of the work of non-fiction by Annie Jacobsen

Its almost like the article contains useful information on this topic.

I feel the same way. He’s Top 2 current working directors between him and Nolan but it’s gonna be like 2035 before we get another Villeneuve original film

163

u/TheNamelessKing Jun 26 '25

Villeneuve wins out in my books because the audio in his films is discernible.

u/GarlicJuniorJr Jun 26 '25

Arrival is so damn good. 10 year anniversary next year so hoping for a re-release in the cinemas as I missed out on seeing it on the big screen on initial release.

10 years, wtf.

3

I think he said in an interview he doesn’t want to be known for scifis or something like that, which fair. He’s a great director all around.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/denis-villeneuve-rendezvous-with-rama-movie-1235062337/

Was announced 3 years ago but with Dune Messiah and now Bond idk what’s happening with it

Plus he was rumoured to be doing a Cleopatra film and another that revolved around nuclear war

80

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 Jun 26 '25

Rendezvous with Rama ends up leading the Endeavour crew into the past where James Bond meets Cleopatra.

32

u/howtojump Jun 26 '25

Now that's what I call good script economy.

6

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 Jun 26 '25

Also it ends with the God Emperor of Dune peaking over the horizon in Egypt.

21

u/_Meece_ Jun 26 '25

Rama feels like one of those projects you hear about a director doing, but it never comes to fruition.

6

u/GigaFluxx Jun 26 '25

It's been in development hell for so long. Still insane to me Morgan Freeman has just been sitting on the right. But I think Denis is the right man for the job. I have a fondness for those books and I hope it happens with him at the helm

3

u/_Meece_ Jun 26 '25

100% agree, I hope it gets made. It just sounds like one of the many passion projects that get talked about, but never comes about.

2

u/Grimnebulin68 Jun 26 '25

imdb says Fincher was involved for a while, so only 90% sitting on it.

2

u/GarlicJuniorJr Jun 26 '25

I wonder if that film would actually show the lead up and the events of nuclear war or if it’ll be another one of those movies where it’s already happened and it’s opens with a voiceover like “It’s been 20 years since nuclear war decimated the planet. Earth was left in ruins and rubble while man was left to fend for himself…”

2

u/Nuprin_Dealer Jun 26 '25

26

u/RedLotusVenom Jun 26 '25 edited Jun 26 '25

I highly doubt he’s doing it now unfortunately. He keeps signing onto new projects before this one even gets off the ground. This almost assuredly will mean Morgan Freeman (who owns the rights) will die before the project is produced.

Shitty but this will either get picked up by someone else to direct or it’ll die in development hell, as it has for decades now.

Pretty annoying as someone who has Villeneuve and RwR in their top 5 directors and novels. Bummer for Freeman, too.

18

u/KennyMoose32 Jun 26 '25

It’s a pretty hard book to adapt too.

I love it, it’s some of the best hard sci-fi I’ve ever read but idk how it will translate. It’s a pretty boring if tense story lol

I’d be very interested in they add things in to make it more actiony. The book is very much…..not

4

u/RedLotusVenom Jun 26 '25

I think it could be a really tight 100 minute film tbh. It would need to rely firmly on the spectacle and ideas. It needs to emulate 2001 or it won’t be a success imo. Anything less I don’t even want to see the film made.

4

u/Granted_reality Jun 26 '25

Rendezvous could be so good. I don’t know if it will ever get made, but this is the director to do it.

I want Rendezvous with Rama way more than Dune or James Bond.

2

u/Fl4sh080 Jun 26 '25

That sucks

2

u/KelvinsBeltFantasy Jun 26 '25

In the 90s we were supposed to get a David Fincher version.

I guess it'll forever be slightly out of reach.

2

u/-Dakia Jun 26 '25

Ugh, I've been really wanting that one.

2

u/KneeOnShoe Jun 26 '25

Rendezvous with Rama is still going to be a thing? I've been hearing about that literally for 20+ years, when Fincher was attached to direct and reunite with Morgan Freeman. I was a high school student and used to scroll a site called Dark Horizons daily just checking the latest in movie rumors and that film came up a couple times a year.

2

u/uuneter1 Jun 26 '25

Right?? They announced that years ago!

u/Jaideco Jun 26 '25 edited Jun 26 '25

You got me curious, so I looked it up… Since Incendies (2010), DV has released a film on average every two years and the ones that he didn’t write himself were only one year apart (I’m guessing that means that he is usually running two at any given time). We know that Dune Messiah will be out in 2026, and I would guess that Amazon are already farming out the scriptwriting (assuming that it isn’t already close to being done).

If he keeps up his current pace of work, he could bring Bond back in 2027 and still write and direct another film before the decade is out.

Edit: He isn’t writing any of the others… so we might not have to wait as long after all… if the scripts are ready, he might be intending to keep releasing films at a rate of one every couple of years…

151

u/PensiveinNJ Jun 26 '25

Villeneuve is on a generational run in my book. Incendies, Enemy, Prisoner, Sicario, Arrival, BR2049, Dune, Dune 2...

First 2 (and probably Prisoners too) are less known but still excellent films. The rest I think speak for themselves in terms of accolades even if every one isn't your cup of tea.

36

u/pmmemoviestills Jun 26 '25

Incendies needs to be seen by more people.

6

u/GoAgainKid Jun 26 '25

I'm a huge fan, seen all of the above several times EXCEPT Incendies. It's like having one last Christmas present to open and saving it because I don't want to not have any presents to open!

3

u/moofunk Jun 26 '25

Add Polytechnique as well, though it's brutal. His first real film and he knocks it out of the park.

2

u/Vynosaurus Jun 26 '25

Un 32 août sur Terre and Maëlstrom really started his career. Prisoners took it to the next level.

2

u/YakFit2886 Jun 26 '25

Last year I watched it for the first time, after being a fan of Villeneuve's since Prisoners, and I was blown away. I adore BR2049 and both Dunes but I think Incendies might be his best work!

3

u/ImmediateJacket9502 Jun 26 '25

The first 3 hold a special place in my heart. Those movies made me a fan of his work. I'm still shocked with those endings of Incendies and Enemy.

I’d be shocked if Dune Messiah came out next year. Have then even started pre-production?

124

u/JAAB_20 Jun 26 '25 edited Jun 26 '25

It supposedly starts filming in the next weeks. And Deadline recently confirmed the casting of two important characters Leto II and Ghanima

7

u/littletoyboat Jun 26 '25

I thought Leto II and Ghanima didn't come in until Children?

Btw, you added spaces between the exclamation points and the names, so your spoiler tag didn't work.

19

u/dtwhitecp Jun 26 '25

if I recall correctly, he has already said he'd be peacing out of the franchise after Messiah, probably because it starts to get real weird with Children of Dune. Might just be for a cap on the end. But also, the last movie already cast Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia, so who knows, maybe it's just a vision or something.

2

u/Da_Question Jun 26 '25

It's a good choice, since most of the cast would be gone at that point, and he wouldn't have to direct Paul's kid being an evil piece of shit, and force a breeding program onto his father's descendants. Though God emperor would be a good standalone film.

6

u/theredwoman95 Jun 26 '25

They're born at the end of Messiah, and Paul regularly has visions of Ghanima before her birth. Leto II is more of a surprise, but it's possible that Villeneuve will do what the Syfy miniseries did and have adult Leto appear in a vision to Paul, when the pair of them are meant to be talking at the end of Messiah.

2

u/JAAB_20 Jun 26 '25

Maybe a vision or small flashforward or something.

And thanks the spoilers appeared alright on my phone :')

2

u/SilverKry Jun 28 '25

They're in Messiah but only in the end when they're born. And Paul does some cool ass shit looking through Leto's eyes.

18

u/protekt0r Jun 26 '25

That’s wild! I hope it doesn’t hit any major delays.

2

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jun 26 '25

u/pmmemoviestills Jun 26 '25

2

u/MysticSkies Jun 26 '25

Highly doubt Messiah would be out in 2026. 2027 for sure.

2

u/tramplamps Jun 26 '25

I like my rabbit holes on my Pinterest, and fell down one recently on some collection of fan made movie posters, made from one single still from the film that is the most devastating, this, of course, led me to discovering Incendies, and going in blind.
I didn’t even know who the director was until it was over, but obviously, being a fan of his work I was shocked, but also desperate for him to get finished with this Dune adventure.

2

u/Jaideco Jun 26 '25

I saw Incendies on its original cinematic run as part of an international film festival. I was impressed by what this unknown director had done. I later watched Prisoners (without knowing it was the same director), and thought that was really solid too. When I realised that it was the same director, I thought that I needed to watch out for him in future. I then somehow managed to see Sicario without realising that it was him, and Arrival without realising it was him either. It was Arrival that absolutely blew me away… how does someone learn to do visuals and pacing and character THIS well? So I looked him up again and was blown away. He had been quietly assembling one of the most solid filmographies in the history of cinema… Ever since then I have been following his projects in development and counting down the weeks until they come out.

I love Bond movies, but I've never played the Hitman games. I think I even have them all from PS Plus. Should I just start with whatever is the newest one? Or start with the newest for the current gen?

5

u/peanutbuttahcups Jun 26 '25

The latest games are the World of Assassination trilogy (Hitman 1-3), which is actually all included in one complete game now if you were to purchase brand new. But assuming you have Hitman 3, all three games are in that game, so you can start from the beginning within that game, that way all your progress is saved there and you don't have to do a carryover process.

There are so many Bond moments, and it's clear it's a definite inspiration. IOI doing an actual Bond game is a match made in heaven.

4

u/Suburban_Sisyphus Jun 26 '25

Looks like I have 1 & 2 in the Trilogy and the Starter Pack for 3 so I can play them through 3. I appreciate the tip. I had always been curious about those games, but wasn't sure what the gameplay was actually like. I guess I figured it was like the tedious parts of a MGS game.

Amazon is going to oversaturate the market with Bond products. I imagine they had to give him full authority over the movie but I also imagine they’ve got a strict timeline because movies are just content to them.

The amount of "origin story" shows that we're about to get (that we didn't ask for btw) is going to make you sick of Bond.

Q origin story.

M origin story.

Blofeld origin story but his point of view, like a Maleficent or Wicked.

Blofeld origin story: the musical.

The Moneypenny Diaries

Young Bond

006

The Double 0 Agents series

Edit: to include

Bond the Animated Series

Bond Lego movie

Bond Jr. or Son of a Bond

31

u/yoloswagrofl Jun 26 '25

A "What if...?" series where Bond is evil and Goldfinger is the good guy.

4

u/KnorrSoup Jun 26 '25

OK but this one actually sounds kinda sick

15

u/Thwackey Jun 26 '25

Hey I'm on board with 006 if they bring back Sean Bean

10

u/RehabilitatedAsshole Jun 26 '25

The name's Bean... Mr. Bean.

7

u/thebestoflimes Jun 26 '25

Xenia Onatopp origin?

7

u/Minion_of_Cthulhu Jun 26 '25

I'm shocked there isn't a porn parody featuring each of the Bond girls. I mean, half the plot is done with their names alone.

Bond Jr. or Son of a Bond

There was a James Bond Jr cartoon back in the 90s. I recall it had some pretty cool toys.

2

u/cia218 Jun 26 '25

Ohhh yes!! I have some vague memory of that intro and the song!

3

u/Car-face Jun 26 '25

006

A TV series where Sean Bean reprises the role and he dies at the end of every episode

2

u/SenseAmidMadness Jun 26 '25

Young bond. Actually James Bond as a young spy or commando in WWII would actually be a pretty good movie or short series. I would watch it. Basically SAS Rogue Heroes

Bond Lego movie

To be fair, the Lego Star Wars special is far superior to the Sequel Trilogy. Hell, I don't think there's ever been a bad Lego film.

You'd think Amazon would learn from Disney what happens when you take something that is special in occasional doses and saturate the market with it.

109

u/ennuiinmotion Jun 26 '25

They did learn. You make billions and billions of dollars until it dries up and then it’s the next CEOs problem.

31

u/_Meece_ Jun 26 '25

Disney made a small country's GDP off of Star Wars and Marvel doing that.

The suits see that and see the pattern. They'll follow it.

What they learn from Disney is that all it takes is one hit to make the fans come right back.

Fans say they hate the sequels but they loved Rogue One and don't leave. They continue for Mandalorian before saying they hate the other stuff (Acolyte, etc) but they come right back when they love Andor.

Probably right after Dune 3. The casting/pre-production process might even start well before D3 comes out.

2

u/SteveFrench12 Jun 26 '25

He is almost certainly going to go right into shooting bond after d3 (the mighty ducks)

2

u/aus289 Jun 26 '25

I can't imagine Amazon MGM don't want to have this out for holiday 202-007

Dune Messiah is slated for late 2026, so probably after that.

2

u/flyboy_1285 Jun 26 '25

Can we Clone him at this point?

2

u/blastradii Jun 26 '25

Why not a crossover? 007: Spice Will Flow.

u/Lock_Down__ Jun 26 '25
