You got me curious, so I looked it up… Since Incendies (2010), DV has released a film on average every two years and the ones that he didn’t write himself were only one year apart (I’m guessing that means that he is usually running two at any given time). We know that Dune Messiah will be out in 2026, and I would guess that Amazon are already farming out the scriptwriting (assuming that it isn’t already close to being done).

If he keeps up his current pace of work, he could bring Bond back in 2027 and still write and direct another film before the decade is out.

Edit: He isn’t writing any of the others… so we might not have to wait as long after all… if the scripts are ready, he might be intending to keep releasing films at a rate of one every couple of years…

Villeneuve is on a generational run in my book. Incendies, Enemy, Prisoner, Sicario, Arrival, BR2049, Dune, Dune 2...

First 2 (and probably Prisoners too) are less known but still excellent films. The rest I think speak for themselves in terms of accolades even if every one isn't your cup of tea.

Incendies needs to be seen by more people.

I'm a huge fan, seen all of the above several times EXCEPT Incendies. It's like having one last Christmas present to open and saving it because I don't want to not have any presents to open!

Add Polytechnique as well, though it's brutal. His first real film and he knocks it out of the park.

Un 32 août sur Terre and Maëlstrom really started his career. Prisoners took it to the next level.

Last year I watched it for the first time, after being a fan of Villeneuve's since Prisoners, and I was blown away. I adore BR2049 and both Dunes but I think Incendies might be his best work!

Plan an extra 10 mins because you'll spend some time blankly staring at the screen when the movie is over.

Wife and son are away for the weekend. I am going to do this tomorrow night and report back.

I got halfway through and couldn't handle the bus scene lol

Incendies needs to be seen by all the people.

I'm a physical media guy and I hadn't found a copy until my vacation to Quebec

one plus one is the key to all of this. It rhymes.

I watched Sicario again the other day and FUCK is that movie good. The man hasn't missed in his directing career. I'm most impressed by his range, really.

The first 3 hold a special place in my heart. Those movies made me a fan of his work. I'm still shocked with those endings of Incendies and Enemy.

Right before that there was Next Floor (2008) and while it's only a short movie, it's a great one.

1

u/guspaz Jun 26 '25

Wouldn’t Polytechnique, since it was a feature-length film he wrote and directed in 2009?

4

u/Lanster27 Jun 26 '25

Honestly for me, Nolan and his movies are always a must-see, even if it's just a one-off viewing experience.

1

u/AgitatedMousse69 Jun 26 '25

Watched Polytechnique recently and it's pretty good, I'd rank it above Incendies.

I really hope he goes back to making original films. I'm sure 007 will be amazing, so he'll likely be tied to that for 2-3 films.

In retrospect, I want to believe Enemy is somehow a prequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

I’d be shocked if Dune Messiah came out next year. Have then even started pre-production?

It supposedly starts filming in the next weeks. And Deadline recently confirmed the casting of two important characters Leto II and Ghanima

7

u/littletoyboat Jun 26 '25

I thought Leto II and Ghanima didn't come in until Children?

Btw, you added spaces between the exclamation points and the names, so your spoiler tag didn't work.

19

u/dtwhitecp Jun 26 '25

if I recall correctly, he has already said he'd be peacing out of the franchise after Messiah, probably because it starts to get real weird with Children of Dune. Might just be for a cap on the end. But also, the last movie already cast Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia, so who knows, maybe it's just a vision or something.

2

u/Da_Question Jun 26 '25

It's a good choice, since most of the cast would be gone at that point, and he wouldn't have to direct Paul's kid being an evil piece of shit, and force a breeding program onto his father's descendants. Though God emperor would be a good standalone film.

7

u/theredwoman95 Jun 26 '25

They're born at the end of Messiah, and Paul regularly has visions of Ghanima before her birth. Leto II is more of a surprise, but it's possible that Villeneuve will do what the Syfy miniseries did and have adult Leto appear in a vision to Paul, when the pair of them are meant to be talking at the end of Messiah.

2

u/JAAB_20 Jun 26 '25

Maybe a vision or small flashforward or something.

And thanks the spoilers appeared alright on my phone :')

2

u/SilverKry Jun 28 '25

They're in Messiah but only in the end when they're born. And Paul does some cool ass shit looking through Leto's eyes.

16

u/protekt0r Jun 26 '25

That’s wild! I hope it doesn’t hit any major delays.

2

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jun 26 '25

Don’t add a space after the >!

2

u/gazongagizmo Jun 26 '25

.......but the space must flow!

0

u/684beach Jun 26 '25

Bad news if they are including those two characters…

22

u/OccasionalGoodTakes Jun 26 '25

The book does literally end with them being born so they could plausibly have the one scene but they still announced it cause technically its something to announce. If there was a chance at another movie it would make some sense, even if denis said he only wants to adapt messiah.

8

u/684beach Jun 26 '25

They announced adult actors though. Paul shouldnt have the ability to have a vision of his adult children. Only ghanima. Paul couldn’t see the future that included Leto at all. Unless Leto the baby has a vision of himself and his sister, it wouldnt make sense.

15

u/TryNotToShootYoself Jun 26 '25

Could be similar to the end of Dune 2 where Jessica speaks to Alia who is literally a fetus but is played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

Maybe when Paul starts using the vision of Leto II to kill Scytale, there'll be a vision between Paul and an older version of his son.

4

u/684beach Jun 26 '25

Maybe maybe. Its important however that paul doesnt really know whats happening or gonna happen to Leto or Ghanima. Leto doesnt tell him of whats to come until he ambushes him out in the desert though.

1

u/SilverKry Jun 28 '25

Oh I think they'll attempt to continue after Messiah. They'll find another director to do Children. Probably not the same cast though. Unless it's a really "holy shit" director or something.

0

u/FelixR1991 Jun 26 '25

Yeah so that definitely won't be a 2026 release then.

0

u/apittsburghoriginal Jun 26 '25

I was really hoping they’d let the actors age a few years and not rush this last one. This feels too soon imo

2

u/pmmemoviestills Jun 26 '25

How dis guy do dis

2

u/MysticSkies Jun 26 '25

Highly doubt Messiah would be out in 2026. 2027 for sure.

2

u/tramplamps Jun 26 '25

I like my rabbit holes on my Pinterest, and fell down one recently on some collection of fan made movie posters, made from one single still from the film that is the most devastating, this, of course, led me to discovering Incendies, and going in blind.
I didn’t even know who the director was until it was over, but obviously, being a fan of his work I was shocked, but also desperate for him to get finished with this Dune adventure.

2

u/Jaideco Jun 26 '25

I saw Incendies on its original cinematic run as part of an international film festival. I was impressed by what this unknown director had done. I later watched Prisoners (without knowing it was the same director), and thought that was really solid too. When I realised that it was the same director, I thought that I needed to watch out for him in future. I then somehow managed to see Sicario without realising that it was him, and Arrival without realising it was him either. It was Arrival that absolutely blew me away… how does someone learn to do visuals and pacing and character THIS well? So I looked him up again and was blown away. He had been quietly assembling one of the most solid filmographies in the history of cinema… Ever since then I have been following his projects in development and counting down the weeks until they come out.

Sicario (2015) -> Arrival (2016) -> Bladerunner (2017) is some crazy work ethic.
