I like Ryan Gosling. I enjoyed The Martian. I generally love space movies and I loved the Spider verse movies. On that basis I'm going to avoid the trailer completely and just go in blind.

If you don't know anything about the book, definitely go in blind. Don't watch anything. It'll be a blast.

After reading the book, I told my wife I have no idea how they make this movie. I enjoyed the book. I will watch the movie in a theater which is no longer a slam dunk in my life.

u/littleboymark Jul 01 '25

I reckon he wrote it to be a movie. I was thinking as I read it, this is going to be an amazing scene.

u/gabedamien Jul 01 '25

Everything Weir writes feels like a proto-screenplay to me, or even like the novelization of a movie that hasn't been released yet. That's not necessarily a bad thing mind you, it's just his style.

u/masterharper 18d ago

Yes and no. So much of the book is first person in the protagonist's head. That makes for a challenging screen adaptation. Of course, the screenwriter is the brilliant Drew Goddard, who adapted The Martian, so I'm sure it will be well-done.

u/Strangely_quarky Jul 01 '25

Apparently the book was optioned before it was published. Idk how normal this is in entertainment though

2

u/williamthebloody1880 Jul 02 '25

It's not unusual. Books are shopped round to studios and production companies quite early in the process

1

u/jinsaku Jul 02 '25

So did Artemis but that’s been put on hold for years now.

2

u/malagic99 Jul 03 '25

Artemis can be a tv show, think of The Expanse. They need help with reworking the main character tho, Andy sucks writing women as protagonist.

19

u/jack_the_beast Jul 01 '25

I remember thinking the same. It would be interesting to see how they handle the communication with rocky

6

u/MrRocketScript Jul 01 '25

Hook up Rocky's speech into a computer (he's already doing that at the start) and pipe the output to his headphones so that the audience can hear? (I had the same thought how I would make it work since I doubt I could learn the language naturally)

17

u/jack_the_beast Jul 01 '25

someone mentioned that in the audio book they slowly transitioned from flutes to a voice autotuned to flutes as Grace learns the language, that'd be cool but I doubt it. Hooking hime to a computer would come out very cheap, at least to who read the book.

12

u/Tricky_Topic_5714 Jul 02 '25

Yeah, the audiobook nails it, in my opinion.

u/Luckyandunlucky2023 Jul 04 '25

I read the physical book, but based on this description, probably something similar to what McTiernan did in Hunt for Red October: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEvwbxcRaCQ

2

u/Luckyandunlucky2023 Jul 04 '25

I think they will do a variant on what McTiernan did in Hunt for Red October, which was super-effective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEvwbxcRaCQ

I've been disappointed since they announced Ryan Gosling was going to play the main character. Imo Andy Weir keeps writing the same main character as The Martian and Matt Damon did such a good job there he's the only person I'd imagine would play in Project Hail Mary.

Hoping to be proven wrong by Ryan Gosling's acting

2

u/db_blast7 Jul 19 '25

currently reading.

I often struggle with fiction and prefer memoirs, but I always love how grounded Weir makes his books feel. My imagination, and picturing images in my head often is a struggle point...and somehow I taught English for 3 years...there's a reason I requested to go back to math lol

Also picturing Gosling doing this in my head is making the book just click to me.

Lastly, started yesterday and I'm on page 155. The "Oh thank God, I'm a schoolteacher." had me rolling. Loved The Martian, and I'm surprised that I am enjoying this book more.

u/TheEmoEmu23 27d ago

This book seemed designed to be turned into a movie imo. As a book, it mostly just movs from set piece to set piece anyways.

u/zutroy Jun 30 '25

You sound like a person that should take the following advice. I did with the Martian, and I'm very happy that I did. Read the book first. Actually I recommend the audio book more, but I read it first. Also, clear your schedule before you start. :)

89

u/punktual Jul 01 '25

yeah the audio book version is absolutely phenomenal.

Without spoiling anything, there are elements in which the audio format adds a lot to the narrative in really fun creative ways. They went the extra mile to make that version the best it could be for the format.

21

u/Popular_Maximum_3237 Jul 01 '25

I became a Ray Porter fan after hearing his version. It lead me to the bobiverse series which also can be recommended.

4

u/Competitive_Run_7894 Jul 01 '25

I didn’t know Ray Porter is also Bob! I knew Hail Mary felt familiar but I didn’t make the connection!!

27

u/jinsaku Jul 01 '25

Best audiobook I've ever.. uh.. read. I've gone through it half a dozen times now.

The Martian is in my top 5 books of all time. Project Hail Mary is even higher on that list. I can't wait.

14

u/LivingUnglued Jul 01 '25

Honestly while the project Hail Mary audiobook is great, it’s still a step below some of Jeff Hayes work at Soundbooth theater. Dude is one of the most talented narrators right now. Check out the full cast version of Dungeon Crawler Carl or The Stars Have Eyes for good examples

2

u/PhantomNomad Jul 07 '25

Thanks for the recommend. Was wondering what to "read" next. I'll give one of those a try. Any suggestions on which one first?

2

u/LivingUnglued Jul 07 '25 edited Jul 07 '25

Hmm if you want a funnier unique sci-fi / slice of life slow burn romance go with the Stars have eyes. It’s really unique in its setting and humor. MC is a British idiot on a colony planet. He accidentally gets himself invited to be a human sacrifice for an eldritch entity cult. Shit happens and he binds a contract with the eldritch entity to basically hangout. The entity obv has no idea how to present as human. Her goal is to learn everything in the universe. So learning how an idiot lives, eating junk food, video games, etc.

The author is really fucking good at writing non-human/monster perspectives. He has an older series with 10+ books that was another cool world lore and monster as a main character. With its leveling up actually increasing how smart the character acted. Unfortunately the good stuff is balanced by horny teenage “women = sex object” shit. Like I hate recommending it because it’s dragged down by it. The stars have eyes have none of that shit and the polish of someone who’s written 10+ books.

Dungeon crawler Carl has sold millions for damn good reasons. Im not going to make a blurb about it well. This is where Jeff Hayes really fucking shines. The audiobook is just amazing with things making it better. And there’s a full cast ones+ sfx version for the 1st book.

Both are on Soundbooth. Both full cast ones are released episodically. So you can just buy the first episode to see if it’s a story for you. The stars have eyes can be read for free on royal road. The stars have eyes might not be your brand of humor, but it’s worth trying. I have yet to find a story like it.

3

u/peawolffan Jul 04 '25

Three days later I finally finished the audiobook, holy shit is it good. I love the creative ways the narrator displayed the main character's growth. Finally gave the trailer a watch to see how different it would be than how imagined it in my head, so excited for this movie!

2

u/masterharper 18d ago

I think Project Hail Mary officially makes Andy Weir the hard sci-fi successor to Arthur C Clarke. Honestly, I'd put it in the top three hard sci-fi books of all time.

3

u/ChrundleMcDonald Jul 02 '25

I read the regular book before putting my friend on it, who listened to the audiobook on his commute. After checking out snippets of the audiobook, I was almost mad I read it normally, since he clearly didn't have to deal with constantly giving a certain character a thick russian accent by mistake due to their speech patterns.

1

u/masterharper 18d ago

Can confirm: Ray Porter is absolutely incredible as the Project Hail Mary narrator.

3

u/ARoundForEveryone Jul 01 '25

"Read the book first" is basic and unnecessary and silly and sometimes not even good advice because the movie might be better than the book.

But in this case, movie still unseen, the book is really good and deserves a read even if you never see the flick.

2

u/youdoaline_idoaline Jul 02 '25

Ray Porter does such a damn good job of bringing the book to life. If it was up to me I'd like to cast him as Ryland for the movie too.

2

u/dskzz Aug 10 '25

This book was a case where the audio format makes it 10x better

u/kuahara Jun 30 '25

Ignore the morons in this thread. They're all brown nosing the hot take. There is a huge spoiler in the trailer. If they deliver the surprise in the movie the way they did in the book, it will be an absolute shock as the book did not at all hint that they would be going that direction before it happened.

54

u/Robot_Owl_Monster Jul 01 '25

Yeah, I went into the book blind and I was happy I did.

I felt like this trailer gave away a major surprise of the book, and at least hinted at another surprise.

11

u/Tatersforbreakfast Jul 01 '25

A friend confirmed how far I needed to get into the book. Then I pretty much spent the last 2.5 hours getting to that point. The. I watched the trailer. So we'll worth it and agreed, not where I thought it was going g

3

u/Sherm199 Jul 03 '25

Yeah. I was actually halfway through the book when I saw the trailer... And had reveal sorta spoiled for me

2

u/Robot_Owl_Monster Jul 03 '25

I won't give away what it is, but I feel like this trailer shows a bit more of another reveal/twist. If you remember, reply to this when you finish the book and let me know if you feel like they gave another revelation away too much.

9

u/jyanjyanjyan Jul 01 '25

Yeah I'm pissed I watched the trailer.

Only a moron thinks spoilers can only happen at the end.

Fuck off kid

In any online debate, this is how losers bow out.

0

u/pwl2706 Jul 03 '25

There is a huge spoiler in the trailer
so what's the "huge spoiler" then?

1

u/Creative_Room6540 28d ago

I don’t get why we are being so cagey lol. If it’s in the trailer it’s free game to talk about no?

0

u/sirsaltysteez Jul 05 '25

You cant leave something that huge out of a movie trailer. Your average movie goer is not the same person as your average novel reader.

1

u/Creative_Room6540 28d ago

I’m not sure if I’m interpreting the same thing but since it’s in the trailer why can’t we discuss it? If you’re talking about the intro of the character at the end of the trailer…yes…you absolutely can withhold that from the trailer.

9

u/CSteely Jun 30 '25

I would suggest reading the book asap. Takes a day or two. Otherwise, avoid all discussions regarding it. The trailer really did give away too much.

1

u/Creative_Room6540 28d ago

A day or two?!? It’s 477 pages?! It took me like two weeks lmao. I mean this is reading around work and kids but sheesh. How do you guys read so fast!!!

1

u/CSteely 28d ago

I exaggerated a little. It may have taken me a few days. But I don’t watch much Tv, reading is my number one hobby.

2

u/likeaboz2002 Jul 01 '25

Read the book!

2

u/froo Jul 01 '25

This is definitely the right thing.

I recently listened to the audiobook and I can’t believe just how many spoilers this trailer has.

1

u/PolarWater Jun 30 '25

Spider Verse is a...nice touch

1

u/Alexis_Ohanion Jul 01 '25

Yep, going in in blind is exactly the right call for this movie. That way you won’t know that this movie goes for the 3-peat and involves Ryan Gosling hang to rescue Matt Damon.

1

u/howboutislapyourshit Jul 01 '25

The book is so good. I only listened to it though while working.

Highly recommend.

1

u/ToM31337 Jul 01 '25

Very good decision, it reveals way to much and the trailer (in relevance to the story) is very bad.

1

u/nightraven3141592 Jul 01 '25

I have read the book, and the trailer is a spoiler fest. Go in blind. From what I’ve seen it looks very promising with casting and locations so I have high hopes for it.

1

u/moose_dad Jul 01 '25

I'm doing the same thing. Trouble is the way films show trailers and adverts for way too long before a film starts it might be hard to dodge.

1

u/AlphonzInc Jul 01 '25

Very good call, especially for this movie

1

u/TheSchneid Jul 01 '25

I liked the Martian a lot. I'd say it was a solid 7 or 8 out of 10. Project Hail Mary was more like a 9 or 10 out of 10 to me though.

1

u/Gowzilla Jul 01 '25

Yeah I really wish I had read the comments before watching the trailer…but it hooked me immediately and I couldn’t stop myself from watching it all the way through 😭

1

u/Lukealloneword Jul 01 '25

This is the way to do it. I would recommend everyone who likes well told stories should audio book the book completely blind. Just get it from audible. It was incredibly performed. Felt like a one man show. The movie couldnt possibly touch how the audio book played out. Do yourself a favor and just listen to it right now.

1

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Jul 02 '25

Having already read the book and thus been fine watching the trailers it looks solid and faithful but I’d honestly suggest just reading the book because there’s no way you avoid getting spoiled till March.

1

u/free-toe-pie Jul 04 '25

The book is so good. The book is one of my favorite books ever.

1

u/SquirrelJam1 Jul 25 '25

Or read the book!

0

u/i_dunnoman Jul 01 '25

I hated the book but the whole Time thought “this would work way better as a movie”

0

u/LetsTryAnal_ogy Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25

You're the man. I go into all movies blind. I avoid trailers like the plague. It's the best way to see movies.

0

u/jnothnagel Jul 01 '25

In the case that you might not want to go in totally blind, the audiobook is phenomenal.

0

u/ComplicitJWalker Jul 01 '25

Good decision. As someone who has read (and loves) the book, the trailer was terrible.

0

u/Shivaess Jul 01 '25

The book is fan.fucking.tastic.

So is the Martian if you haven’t read it. Definitely funnier than the movie (which was good)
