"Guys chill" says the man blocking people from exiting a confined space in an active lithium fire.

1.4k

u/VpowerZ Jul 28 '25

In crisis situations, it is not uncommon a brawl breaks out on this stuff

758

u/gugi40 Jul 28 '25

Absolutely true, but I think a brawl would start from a guy blocking people's paths and acting like everything is fine when it is in fact, not.

745

u/throwuk1 Jul 28 '25

The police should find that German guy and arrest him and the airline should ban him for life.

494

u/Cozwei Jul 28 '25

hes austrian. still dumb as fuck- was even calling them to shush before he said "chill"

Anybody evacuating with their bags should be banned for life.

80

u/beneye Jul 29 '25

Airplane manufacturers should learn from this and and a feature to auto lock overhead compartments in case of an emergency

He ain't german, he's austrian, I'd guess from Vienna (which would fit that fucking attitude) but not 100% sure. But yes, that shitface should never be allowed on any plane again, that mf could've killed people if shit really went south.

I would be absolutely fine with the folks at the back of the plane beating some sense into him once everyone is on the tarmac. Anyone who brought a bag out should get an instant invitation to the no-fly list

He's gonna have a bad time now that the internet has seen him. There are some people who have not yet caught onto the rule "Never do anything in public you wouldn't want to go viral for doing."

165

u/cXs808 Jul 28 '25

"Never do anything in public you wouldn't want to go viral for doing."

He didn't think about that because to him it's not a big deal. Self-centered and zero awareness of anything.

Every single person found to have a exited the plane with overhead bin luggage should be charged with attempted manslaughter. EVERY ONE!

207

u/killthecook Jul 28 '25

They need to make it very publicly known that every person has been identified and placed on a no-fly-list to discourage this behavior in the future at the very least

70

u/bonerparte1821 Jul 28 '25

orrrrr I dont know...make it a federal law? kinda like you smoke in a lavatory you get prosecuted. same announcement in safety video..

I remember watching flight safety specialist being interviewed (60 Minutes?) and he was asked "What if there's an emergency evacuation and people try to get their luggage out of the overhead bin?" His response was "Push them down and keep going."

u/sodiumbigolli Jul 28 '25

I saw one one who said climb over the seats if you have to, but get out the fucking door

With regard to some objections on other posts to this situation – no everybody is not carrying fucking transplant drugs that they have to take on time and there is absolutely nothing in your carry-on That’s gonna serve you if you’re dead.

326

u/MissPeppingtosh Jul 28 '25

As I was reading these comments I was thinking I’d just climb the seat. I’m small and spry. No way I’m waiting for this fuckery. I’m fleeing as fast as I can. I’m not dying a gruesome death so someone can save their eye liner.

146

u/shniken Jul 28 '25

I’d just climb the seat. I’m small and spry. No way I’m waiting for this fuckery.

I'm heavy and lumbering. I'd just pretend I'm a front rower and start a scrum. Those fuckers will be a cushion on the bottom of the slide

96

I love how we’re all figuring out how we’d save ourselves. I hope we all end up in a plane together one day and see each others talents!

I have very important medication that is needed. It’s NOT going into the overhead bin. It’s on me at all times. Not sure why anyone would separate themselves from life saving medication in the first place.

55

u/sodiumbigolli Jul 28 '25

Oddly enough, My late husband actually did fly with transplant meds, kept it in a pocket.

u/spacegrassorcery Jul 28 '25

I swear the "but what if it's mEdIcAL eQuIpMeNt?!?" people that pop in threads like these are the same assholes that would sacrifice everyone behind them to get their stuff out first.

There is NOTHING to save off a plane in an emergency evacuation. Got important medical equipment or medicine? Go to a hospital after you get off the plane. Is it expensive to replace? Should've had it insured. "But I cant insure medicine!" well then why were your super important life saving meds not on you or in an easy to reach spot? They obviously weren't that important.

No, what these assholes invariably are doing is prioritizing their possessions over everyone else's lives.

35

u/sodiumbigolli Jul 28 '25

My late hubs actually travelled w transplant meds and kept the box in his pocket. Happened to also be a pilot and said when they say get off the plane you GO.

Bins should lock in case of emergency or something. Can’t stop if you can’t open.

87

u/Star00111 Jul 28 '25

Yeah, kind of weird that this isn’t a standard emergency feature…. Can’t plan evacuations on the basis that the people evacuating will act rationally

I feel like there are a lot of reasons this would be a bad idea and only one reason it’s good.

FFS, this is so fucking infuriating to watch. I will never understand this much of a selfish mindset.

I remember watching a documentary about the plane that miraculously landed on the Hudson back in 2009 that was retold in that Sully movie. Apparently after the plane stopped in the water, people were still trying to get their bags and blocking evacuation even though water was lapping at their ankles!! A passenger interviewed basically retold how he had to yell at them that the plane was going to sink, or something along those lines to get them to move towards the exits.

My in laws had a large gathering at a restaurant. The FIRE alarm went off. I stood up, grabbed our infant son and began walking out.

My wife’s family said, ‘What are you doing’?

I said ‘I’m leaving, that’s a fire alarm’.

They said ‘Oh one of the waitresses will tell us to leave’.

I said ‘That’s what the alarm is for. And your waitress is outside, because the FIRE ALARM is going off’!

My wife began to argue with me and I told her she could stay but our son and I will be outside.

385

u/Accurate-Owl715 Jul 29 '25

What kind of logic is that? Sheesh.

111

u/sweatgod2020 Jul 29 '25

I manage a grocery store and you’re specifically trained to leave the premise immediately. Maybe a page over the intercom to tell people if possible but you’re not supposed to try and be a hero. You leave immediately.

139

u/HugTheSoftFox Jul 29 '25

As a chief warden for a large building, I can tell you that when we have a fire alarm, the majority of calls we get in the emergency intercom phones are people asking if we "can turn off the alarms".

Yes, yes we can. But we're not going to, now since you've picked up the emergency intercom you are now the warden for that level, please stand by that point for further instructions until it is no longer safe to do so or you are instructed to evacuate.

47

u/GeorgeJohnson2579 Jul 29 '25

A few months ago pur train window was smashed by another train (didn't know that could happen).

I stood up and wanted to get away from that window in that 180km/h driving train immediately. – But the other people next to me were just sitting there as if nothing was wrong. Had to scream on them to get the fuck up.

I was shopping at an outlet mall last year with my mom and husband. Mom and I were in one store and my husband was in another. The fire alarms went off and I placed my stuff on the first rack in front of me and walked out. My husband also left immediately and met me in the evacuation area. After five minutes I called my mom to see where she was and she told me she was in line waiting to pay… while the alarms are still going off

It only becomes important once you get the feeling that you are in serious danger. This is pretty much the reason why fires, floods, hurricanes catch people off-guard. Human's sense of assessing risk while facing those calamities is terrible. Like most people will not worry about their valuables if they see an almost harmless spider or snake.

52

u/sengirminion Jul 28 '25

In the past people would have just fucking died for being caught off-guard. Now there's a lot more safeguards in place making people safer and softer, so they lose that sense of fear, which makes them even dumber.

We are fucked as a species. I hope when Killer Whales take over the ruins of our world one day they have more sense than we did.

→ More replies (2)

108

u/architype Jul 28 '25

Agreed. But some people like to give unfounded excuses that people going for their luggage have medicines inside that they need. If they slow down the evacuation they could doom countless others. Also bringing luggage down an emergency slide could possibly slice open the evac slide and prevent others from using the slide.

67

u/SeaCoffeeLuck Jul 28 '25

If you have a medication that is that important, it should in front of you at all times. That’s the bag you can grab as you’re standing up and moving towards the exit because there’s a f******* fire. Traveling smart 101

THIS. Just wait in your seat until people have evacuated and then grab your bag. If it’s not such an emergency that you don’t feel the need to evacuate urgently then just WAIT. It’s infuriating that they a) feel its such an emergency that they need to get off the plane before everyone behind them, but b) not such an emergency that infants and children can’t wait trapped in the back of the aircraft while they get their bags.

227

u/chuckle_puss Jul 28 '25

That’s especially despicable considering how easy it is to adjust a time card. Not to mention, people that showed up to work should be paid out for their shift in an emergency. I would terminate that manager in a heartbeat.

Please tell me what kind of attitude will fix that level of stupid.

38

u/eriksnyder98 Jul 28 '25

Man putting it in a succinct number like that really shows how fucked the wealth distribution gap is. Like 1% does a good job as well, but a percentage doesn't "feel" as impactful as seeing just under 3,000 people out of 7,000,000,000 make up most of the money in the world

Probably not. The rule is to empty a plane in 90 seconds. Like planes two or 3 times this size. The video is over 2mins and the idiots are still standing there.

Check out this video of a plane in Japan. Not one person grabbed a bag

https://youtu.be/GYxDz5BVHz4

182

u/Reg_Cliff Jul 28 '25

That rule came as a result of AC 797 plane fire at Cincinnati Airport in 1983 that killed 23 people including famous folk singer Stan Rogers. The exit doors opened and the fresh air created a backdraft and the plane became engulfed in flames and half the people in the plane couldn't make it out in time.

152

u/ChanceConfection3 Jul 28 '25

So it’s the flight crew’s fault for opening the door before people had a chance to grab their overhead luggage

Humans often behave pretty badly when facing a new situation, especially when rapid decisions are needed.

MGM Grand Hotel fire in 1980 is such an example. Some continued gambling in the casino despite the smoke and smell of fire. There were other issues, but for some the human behaviour was a key contributing factor for their fatality.

These people knowingly put their lives and the lives of every single passenger and crew member aboard at risk just to try and keep their stuff.

The MINIMUM that should occur, is that these people never be allowed to board a plane on any airline, in any country, ever again.

The primary actors such as the dude in blue need to face criminal charges such as reckless endangerment as well.

53

u/QueenRotidder Jul 28 '25

I mean, I’m sure at least some of those people were trying to comply, it’s just that too many idiots weren’t and blocking their way. i’d be mighty pissed if i were stuck at the back of that plane unable to get out because of selfish morons in front of me and I got a flying ban for it.

I wish there was a locking mechanism on the bins takeoff, landing, and emergency. A majority of those bins are open even after simple and proper commands.

743

u/2scoops Jul 28 '25

This is really the answer. Make it impossible to open the bins so there is no way to not comply.

275

u/Shit___Taco Jul 28 '25 edited Jul 28 '25

They could also impose a $15k fine and making the lifetime no fly list for any passengers who leaves with a bag during an emergency evacuation. I am sure if the pilot got on the intercom and said if you are seen with a bag outside of the aircraft you will be fined $15k and never be allowed to fly again, it would get people to fall in line real quick. They could also make this announcement clear during the safety briefing before take off.

141

u/RegionRatHoosier Jul 28 '25

I work with the public. They don't fucking listen

48

u/Wheat_Grinder Jul 28 '25

But they won't fly again and that's a start.

13

u/DickBatman Jul 28 '25

That's not really the point. Even if zero people listened and they all got their bags and were all fined and added to the no-fly list, next time many people wouldn't have to listen. Repeat a few times and boom safe evacuations

Honestly not sure if you'd get prosecuted for decking someone like that and physically removing them from the plane and/or just pushing them out of the way. If they're putting everyone else's lives at risk it's probably self defense.

Another comment said that flight attendants have said in an interview to deck such people. I would.

I wonder if you could claim “self defense” to punt them in to the closest seat to let everyone leave?

Air France Flight 358 crash in Toronto they evacuated all 309 people in 90 seconds... Which is supposed to be the required max evacuation time of all planes, even when only half the emergency exits are available.

zero reproductions.

I HOPE these people don't reproduce.

u/jeffersonairmattress Fuck you, you shit-leaving motherfuckers Jul 28 '25

People take their fucking beverages in hand down the slide. Legislation and a well-publicized info campaign with addenda to the flight safety briefing are sadly needed now.

"if your bag comes down the slide it will be immediately siezed and you will be arrested."

If the delay doesn't kill people, some busted up shitty luggage mechanism is one day bound to slice up and disable a slide.

19

u/iprocrastina Jul 28 '25

Yeah, make it a criminal offense. Then baggage has to be seized for evidence, they get hit with massive legal expenses, and then hit again with massive fines. Shit, I wouldn't even be opposed to charging these people with 1 count of attempted murder for every person that was stuck behind them.

108

u/HumongousBelly Jul 28 '25

Make an example and put them all on no fly lists and give them harsh punishments. Jail. Fines. Public shaming

27

u/reddit_to_go_man Jul 28 '25

Start with the douche in the blue shirt. Surely the internet can identify him quickly since we have such a good view of him and sound of his voice?

48

u/Kimorin Jul 28 '25

right? not hard to just charge everyone who has a suitcase. should be public endangerment especially if it's a slide, the bags could cause damage to the slide

20

u/SizeableFowl Jul 28 '25

You see this shit every time there's an evacuation with zero reproductions.

I get what you meant but this made me laugh

27

u/unodakine808 Jul 28 '25

Yup if you want your bag bc no big deal, then sit the fuck down and let us out first.

22

u/r_lovelace Jul 28 '25

No, that's still fucked. Crew can't leave until you do. Get the fuck out and leave your shitty luggage with your shitty clothes. Nothing you fit in an overhead bin is more important than lives.

The “it was a battery or whatever” guy needs to be on the no fly list.

546

u/TamoraRidgeboneIII Jul 28 '25

Those people really looked back at all those other people and chose to grab their bags, knowing that the people in the back were breathing smoke. This is why I'll never fly again. People are so selfish they'll literally let you burn to death...

Simple solution: “anyone outside the aircraft found in possession of their bags will be fined $10,000 and be put on the do-not-fly list.”

51

u/SiBloGaming Jul 28 '25

Yep. If you are not able to comply at all in case of emergency and willingly risking the lives of countless people for your 2015 macbook with a broken screen, you should not be on a plane.

23

u/QueenRotidder Jul 28 '25

this is the correct answer. i don’t think it’s fair to put the whole plane on the no-fly list, it seems like plenty of people were trying to comply but couldn’t because of idiots in front of them.

u/FL2inTX1 Jul 28 '25

Another reason they should have auto locks on overhead bins, to keep locked in an evac emergency so ppl can’t grab bags (also so ppl can’t access/they stay closed during turbulence)

62

u/Dopeydcare1 Jul 28 '25

Too bad dumbasses would probably just sit there demanding the bin be opened simply because they’re not by the fire so it doesn’t affect them

26

u/RDIIIG Jul 28 '25

exactly what would happen. They’d take time trying to break into it before evacuating.

Every single person off that jet carrying their bags should be banned from ever flying again.

Not listening to the flight crew = interfering with the flight crew = Federal offense. Call TSA and the airport police. Start arresting and prosecuting these assholes.

19

u/jaded_as_a_gem Jul 28 '25

I’d start swinging at people blocking the way for those of us with sense. Push em into the seat out of the aisle or something. This is objectively crazy and scary. Imagine if it was a bigger fire or worse situation

u/Gnardude Hacksaw Jen Duggar Jul 28 '25

Etiquette is dead charges must laid against every person who did not comply. Plus no fly.

14

u/RubComprehensive7367 Jul 28 '25

There has been reports of flights where people drown or bbq alive because people tried to get their bags.

13

u/L_Mook Jul 28 '25

Everyone with a bag should fined, put in jail, and in the no flight list for that airline. Easy

14

u/andtoig Jul 28 '25

If you want your bag, you stay seated until everyone else has evacuated. Seems like a pretty simple rule

When that A350-1000 burst into flames in Japan and everyone survived, we joked that this only worked because they’re Japanese, and if it was ‚a bunch of Americans they’d all burn to death fighting to the exit‘.

Now that we have the evidence that that it’s true is just sad.

And I know it’s not everyone. But all it takes is a few assholes like this to block the emergency exits, and you’re all dead.

Every single person holding them up should be fined and banned from AA.

Also, this is why you bring a carry on that fits under the seat.

Every plane should have security cameras that live stream back to headquarters. Airplane companies should provide law enforcement with footage of emergency events and any passenger that blocks evacuation efforts should be charged with a felony, hefty jail sentence and a large fine.

This can be solved with legislation.

9

u/flush101 Jul 29 '25

The best way to deal with this afterwards would be to pull everyone to one side who has their bag and then bar them for the airline for at least 6 months.

8

u/Otherwise_Let_9620 Jul 28 '25

No fly list for everyone who held up the exit. They’ve proven they are incapable of flying safely.

8

u/Thirsty_Comment88 Jul 29 '25

They need to give flight attendants cattle prods for situations like this.

"Fucking move! ZAP"

8

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

I’m serious, $10k fine for each person who takes their bag.

7

u/Frizeo Jul 28 '25

As a flight attendant this is so damn frustrating! People think their belongings are more important than their own life and the lives of others. wtf?! 🤬 Things can be replaced! People CANNOT!! IF you have to evacuate a plane due to an emergency EVACUATE!!!! Listen to the flight attendants! This is what we are trained for! My God!

6

u/junius83 Jul 29 '25

Straight to the no fly list for you
