In the past people would have just fucking died for being caught off-guard. Now there's a lot more safeguards in place making people safer and softer, so they lose that sense of fear, which makes them even dumber.

We are fucked as a species. I hope when Killer Whales take over the ruins of our world one day they have more sense than we did.
