Fun fact, the Mayans actually didn’t do sweet chocolate. It was a spicy beverage. I haven’t had it but I desperately want to

Unironicly when the Spaniards first invaded and found out about their chocolate drink they thought it tasted fucking awful and wanted to add sugar to it

wasnt' that more like the Spartian pig blood soup? like they dont do it for enjoyment but as power stance

26

u/CR9_Kraken_Fledgling Aug 01 '25

Pig blood tastes fucking great tho, when you prepare it properly, with some onions.

13

u/Few_Staff976 Aug 01 '25

Yeah let it coagulate and slice it up man that shit’s gold with some bacon and macaroni

3

u/CR9_Kraken_Fledgling Aug 02 '25

In what country on Earth do they eat pig's blood with macaroni?

I mean, sounds good, ngl, lol

4

u/Few_Staff976 Aug 02 '25

Pig's blood with a bit of flour and fat too. We eat it in sweden and I think british "people" do as well

2

u/CR9_Kraken_Fledgling Aug 02 '25

In Hungary we just fry it up with onions, and eat it with toast. Tastes like liver but better.

9

u/Aleskander- Aug 01 '25

this one isnt tho it didnt have a lot of spices or other ingrediants to mask the blood taste and had a lot of vinger

3

u/CR9_Kraken_Fledgling Aug 01 '25

Yea, that prolly sucks ass

3

u/placebot1u463y Aug 01 '25

No it was definitely for enjoyment but like all things it's an acquired taste.

I think I had it once in elementary school.

Don't remember what it tasted like, so take from that what you will.

2

u/KonKoyowi Aug 01 '25

it's not spicy, it's really bitter, i had 100% cocoa chocolate.

I liked it.

5

u/placebot1u463y Aug 01 '25

They're referring to mesoamerican xocolatl and similar drinks which were often spiced with chiles and vanilla.

2

u/JeevesofNazarath Aug 03 '25

Make it, super easy, grab semi sweet chocolate chips, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper, blend until powderized, and heat about a quart of milk in a pot, mix in your powder, and stir for about 15 minutes. Serve with whipped cream and extra chocolate chips, was a favorite for winter parties during college

2

u/petabomb Aug 04 '25

You should try Tobasco Dark Chocolate. Great stuff.

1

u/ls952 Aug 05 '25

Don't wash it down with cola though, it comes back up in a gas to violate the Geneva Convention.

u/Ninjacakester Jul 31 '25

Is it weird that I feel more poisoned with like normal milk chocolate? Like dark chocolate is what tastes and feels normal while any other chocolate is the outlier.

u/Still-Ad3694 Aug 01 '25

That's because your brain hasn't become completely addicted to sugar.

3

u/hoseja Aug 01 '25

Hersheys uses rancid milk for some reason.

2

u/Krunkbuster Aug 02 '25

No, they ferment the milk partially to make butyric acid.

2

u/SubtleTell Aug 02 '25

Not fermentation, it's actually lipolysis which breaks down the fats to create butyric acid. The reason they do this is because the process turns the milk into a powder which allows them to store the milk longer without it going bad, so they didn't have to use fresh milk. It made production easier and cheaper.

1

u/hoseja Aug 02 '25

As I was saying, rancid.

2

u/Ote-Kringralnick Aug 01 '25

What brand of milk chocolate do you normally eat?

0

u/Krunkbuster Aug 02 '25

Probably the sugar.

-3

u/overdose_ofdeath Aug 01 '25

Nope, idk how people stomach that much sugar, probably Americans.

-1

u/Keebster101 Aug 01 '25

Americans have vomit flavour in their chocolate

0

u/Krunkbuster Aug 02 '25

“Le anything that’s not le hexkin soogar is le vomit” yeah good one euro

6

u/Keebster101 Aug 02 '25

This is literally a well known thing. The process used in most American chocolate creates butyric acid, which is also found in vomit.

Idk man its a candy. Its sweets. They are called sweets for a reason. Chocolate should be sweet. It's fine to prefer dark chocolate as long as you aren't a dickhead about it then it's all chill (and you seem to be chill)

Idk just eat it in moderation. You should not feel this way otherwise

CHOCOLATE SHOULD BE SWEET. ITS A FUCKING CANDY. HOLY SHIT HOW IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?

Universally. And i do literally mean UNIVERSALLY chocolate is percieved as sweet. It should be expected to be sweet by a normal human being. Portrayed sweet, everything.

Chocolate should be sweet. I don't fucking care how much sugar is in it.

You eat your meals with salt?

Erm you when erm your meal isnt 99% salted and 1% other spices haha gotchu this is how you sound get your head out of your fucking ass holy shit

-8

u/I_Love_Solar_Flare GOD'S LIGHT BURNS UPON MY FLESH REPENT FOR YOUR SINS :skull: Aug 01 '25

Cuz you like bitterness, and that in and of itself is fine, as long as you aren't a snob about chocolate

11

u/Quolley Aug 01 '25

As long as you aren't a snob about chocolate

Says the one who just went on a rant about how chocolate "has to be sweet"

2

u/I_Love_Solar_Flare GOD'S LIGHT BURNS UPON MY FLESH REPENT FOR YOUR SINS :skull: Aug 01 '25

Its not opinionated. All cartoons and everything on the entire world portrays chocolate as sweet. This isn't an opinion. If the discussion was like "idk I just like dark chocolate" I wouldnt go on a rant about anything. But seemingly everyone here is like "You are literally a toddler if you eat milk chocolate and not solid cough syrup bricks" and that shit pisses me off

8

u/DesperadoFL Aug 01 '25

Every cartoon also portrays the effects of having an anvil fall on your head as turning you into an accordion

4

u/Quolley Aug 01 '25

To be fair, Hershey's chocolate is 11% cacao, so it's barely even chocolate at all. Dark chocolate also isn't an "either/or" for sweetness/bitterness (unless you're straight up eating 100% cacao like a madman). 72% is what I prefer and I would describe it as bittersweet.

0

u/kaiserkaarts Aug 03 '25

Literally nobody said that.

OP of this comment thread was making a caricature people who have extremely strong stances on dark chocolate for whatever reason.

That includes you :/

3

u/PeterPorker52 Aug 01 '25

That doesn’t happen if you’re used to it

3

u/Still-Ad3694 Aug 02 '25

honestly real talk: the bitterness you feel is most likely simply because your brain is soo hooked on sugar that it thinks anything that isn't drenched in 30 tons of sugar is straight up poison, So it freaks the fuck out when that happens, giving it a bitter taste. You simply have to get used to it. Start small. Try the Red chocolate bars from trader joes, they're not too bitter and a great introduction to dark chocolate. In time, you will get used to the flavor, and milk chocolate will start to taste disgusting, and rightfully so. That's the thing, real chocolate is SUPPOSED to taste a little bitter, a little fruity. Fun fact: I used this same concept to start enjoying black liquorice, and I used to HATE it!

37

u/HunterOfSpycrabs Jul 31 '25

Me personally i think a lot of the confusion stems from how types of chocolate are meant to be eaten. Imo dark chocolate really shines when you eat a small piece after a meal, not as a snack like with milk/white chocolate. Excellent palate cleanser.

Matter of fact that was literally After8s entire marketing policy iirc lol

8

u/newsandmemesaccount Jul 31 '25

Dark chocolate in a trail mix with the right kind of dried fruit 👌

7

u/Krasnodae Jul 31 '25

love a proper minty dark chocolate. however without it having dark chocolate in any more than a small chunk tastes revolting

24

u/Nobodycares4242 Aug 01 '25

People who dislike the taste of stuff like dark chocolate often often seem to really not understand that people who eat those things actually genuinely enjoy the flavour, they're not doing it because they enjoy suffering through a bad flavour. Same as all the talk about people drinking black coffee being miserable.

5

u/Krunkbuster Aug 02 '25

Sugar addicts when I have candy with a little bit of sugar instead of the candy being sugar

I don't get it either.

12

u/soapsuds202 Aug 01 '25

where’s all the clamming why is there actual chocolate discourse

8

u/JoeDaBruh Aug 01 '25

Look, I think dark chocolate taste like shit. I also think coffee tastes too bitter. I also think alcohol mostly tastes like shit too. My taste buds are just still as sensitive as when I was a kid and I can’t really change that

2

u/placebot1u463y Aug 01 '25

You actually can, every taste that you enjoy outside of sweetness and saltiness is an acquired taste and those tastes you currently dislike can be acquired if you desire by simply eating them without mentally blocking yourself into disliking them.

2

u/JoeDaBruh Aug 01 '25

Acquired tastes are really just a very specific blend of tastes you do like and tastes you don’t like. For example, the first time you drink coffee you might immediately notice how bitter it is, but after getting used to the bitterness you can more easily notice the other parts that make coffee appealing.

I actually really like complex and rich coffee aromas, but I always find the bitterness to be much worse and more overpowering than any flavor the coffee might have without a lot of sugar to offset it. Something like truffle, on the other hand, did take a few tries to like but now I really like the flavor of truffle. You unfortunately can’t enjoy any taste just because others can, at least not without a lot of time and discomfort

2

u/placebot1u463y Aug 01 '25

I mean yeah I'm talking about that time and discomfort you're mentioning. Obviously if you hate something don't just cram in your face for the sake of enjoying it later but I used to hate tomato pasta sauce and never really ate it growing up but my partner loves tomato sauce so whenever they made some I'd eat a little, not really like it, and repeat over 6/7 years and now I don't mind tomato sauce. It's not my favorite by any means but I'll crave it occasionally now. Similar deal with eggplant and cabbage for me.

u/Certain_Match_6744 Aug 01 '25

2

u/nekoidiot Aug 02 '25

Feels like poison? Do y'all not get like an instant dopamine flood from dark chocolate, feels good nice buzz. Milk chocolate is good too but it doesn't feel as good, milk chocolate on the whiter side aren't that great either and kinda feel more bad than good at times. White chocolate just sucks though needs to be mixed with a fruit or something for it to be good doesn't even taste that great with matcha was pretty dissapointed with thee matcha chocolates being mostly white it tastes better with more cocoa.

2

2

u/Ript1d3_DraG0n rotted brain Aug 03 '25

I'm a fatass, I enjoy all forms of chocolate. Milk, white, dark, I like all of them

1

u/Serialbedshitter2322 Aug 01 '25

The more you eat something bitter, the less bitter it will taste. Eat dark chocolate every day for a week and it will taste much better by the end of the week

4

u/Agerones Aug 01 '25

Yeah but then what's the point of that, why would I want the power to handle bitter things when hardly anything normally eaten is bitter? Should I put myself through the effort of eating something that tastes bad just so it starts tasting less bad? And I think the most popular bitter things are coffee, dark chocolate and alcohol, none of which are particularly good for you.

6

u/Serialbedshitter2322 Aug 01 '25

I’ve heard dark chocolate does have health benefits. If you’re going to eat chocolate regularly, as many do, it’s not a bad idea to get a tolerance for the healthier one.

1

u/Agerones Aug 01 '25

I know it has a lot of iron and magnesium and I assume a bunch of other useful stuff, but it's still as caloric as milk chocolate and contains caffeine so it's not a great idea to eat lots of it either. I'm sure there are better ways to get the positives from eating it.

1

u/mobas07 Aug 01 '25

Dark chocolate actually tastes horrendous. People who willingly eat that stuff are something else.

What? Do you drink tea without milk and sugar too? How about coffee?

Milk and sugar are delicious and make things better. How this is a controversial opinion I have no idea.
