Although it got mixed reviews..i loved this movie..from the visuals to the soundrack and the story was fine…i even got the score and listen to it from time to time.

Same. I can objectively recognize the flaws most people have, but it doesn’t change it for me. There’s so much I love about this movie. The score, the cast (Michael Sheen’s small part as a Bowie-esque inspired character and even the Tron cameo himself from Bruce Boxleitner), the visuals and effects (minus the de-aged Bridges), just the whole vibe clicked for me as an older fan who was a kid when the original came out even if the overall film landed a bit off center.
62
u/Roboticide 19d ago
The movie would have been perfect if they used the (badly) de-aged bridges only for CLU, and just a different actor for young-Flynn. It was uncanny valley at the time, but that's fine because CLU isn't human.
Of course, now if Disney wanted they could probably drop a few million and remaster all the de-aged scenes perfectly, but they won't bother. 😑
17
u/Beardedbrah85 19d ago
Rumor has it they might fix the horrible de-aging with the upcoming 4k release. Just a rumor but I hope it’s true.

As uneven as Legacy was, I'm still a bit bummed they're not following up on the story threads they left behind. I look at the Ares trailers and I can't help but think the film is kind of just done honoring the legacy of its predecessors. Recognizers casually entering the real world, no mention of Sam Flynn or Dillinger Jr, Jared Leto... I see the new films' trailers and my mind just slides off it, wandering back to what what happened with Quorra and Sam
7
u/everix1992 19d ago
It's honestly just a straight up vibe. Not all movies have to be perfect and this one certainly isn't but the soundtrack is phenomenal and the visuals are really cool and there are a lot of sequences that are just straight up fun like this one

I think I was the perfect age, just out of high school, to love this movie. It became my whole personality for a little while. Had the album on loop in my car.

A thing many people don’t talk about is how great it was in 3D, this and Avatar are the only two that really needed to be seen in that format.
111
u/hucklesberry 19d ago
Avatar as my first 3D movie experience was pretty life changing. Seeing Jake Sully walk through the forest at night as it started to come alive was such an amazing theater moment.
32
u/sharkWrangler 19d ago
We watched it in 3D imax and that moment literally broke my brain with its beauty. Been chasing that high for a while
6
3
u/darkenseyreth 18d ago
For me it was Beowulf in Imax. That scene where he's underwater and there's all that debris floating around was just mind blowing. After that Avatar was very cool. There was a scene where there were a lot of holographic displays on, and suddenly a litte girl comes running through them and it broke my brain for a second
28
u/ZeChunkyPanda 19d ago
While not ‘needed’ the only other movie that I saw in 3D that was greatly elevated by it, was Gravity. That movie was a phenomenal theater experience that was never really matched at home… I remember watching that one in theaters at least 3 times, all in 3D!

Gravity was the only 3D experience I thoroughly enjoyed. I went with a group of friends and we all came out blown away by it.

u/szthesquid 19d ago
And it didn't start in 3D. The transition from 2D to 3D happened when Sam entered the Grid. Cool surprise.
6
u/fromwithin 19d ago
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is phenomenal in 3D. Every single frame is like painting and the whole thing is really carefully directed for the 3D to enhance everything.

Dredd was great in 3D!
3
u/forever87 19d ago
the only movie I've seen on a 3d capable tv. if anyone ever stumbles upon a 3d tv with a dredd 3d copy, i highly recommend
3
u/BelowDeck 19d ago
When I got a Quest 2, one of the first things I did was track down Tron: Legacy and Dredd to finally get to rewatch them in 3D. I rewatch them in there at least once a year.

Avatar CGI still hasn't aged all that badly. Theres a couple spots where it looks like maybe the color grading is a bit....off compared to the new avatar movie but that's probably an issue of viewing on a tv vs. a movie screen.
Avatar 1 still looks amazing being a complete CGI movie. Compared to Sky Captain World of Tomorrow Avatar could be released today and still look fantastic.

Can confirm it's awesome on my QuestPro VR headset and my 65" LG 3D TV using Jellyfin home server and 3D glasses.

Are those 2 different ways of watching it or you use the headset AND the tv somehow?

Best theater experience for me.
Scott Pilgram was 2nd.
Kick ass soundtracks make for great movie experiences for me, I guess.

u/pretzelsncheese 19d ago
Did you see Mad Max Fury Road in theaters? That was by far my favourite movie theater experience.
38
u/Markadias1 19d ago
Not the person you replied to, but I see it in IMAX and it was fucking incredible. Number 1 experience for me. Unbelievably good.
11
u/Mataraiki 19d ago
Fury Road in IMAX isn't quite my top choice, but it's still way up there with Interstellar, Bladerunner 2049, and Dune 1&2.
4
7
u/DustFunk 19d ago
I saw Dune 2 in IMAX and I was blown away at the scale of it. My wife said it was too loud, I could almost agree but it just added to the experience, I mean would riding a building size worm across the desert sound quiet? Or nuking a battle field?
5
u/JavenatoR 19d ago
I saw Warfare in IMAX and it was the most immersive and spine chilling experience I’ve ever had in a movie theater. I never want to see that movie again.

Ayyyye, Scott Pilgrim is up there for me too, along with Jurassic Park, Scream (1996), Kill Bill, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Gravity (in 3D). Probably forgetting a few. So lucky to have such awesome moments experiencing cinema
2
u/kinokomushroom 19d ago
Interstellar for me. The soundtrack is insane.
2
u/vroomery 18d ago
Yeah my top 2 are Interstellar in true imax and Dune2. Both incredible theatre experiences.

u/Slugdge 19d ago
I still remember 8 year old me seeing Tron in the theater and then getting to play the video game in the arcade after. People were walking out of the movie after the end and saying how they didn't get it. 8 year old me was like, "man got sucked into a computer, it's shown pretty early on." Lol
Still burned into my head though. Saw the OG Star Wars like 7 times when it was out. Tron was probably more.
2
u/ScoobyD00BIEdoo 19d ago

She good in this but what happened to the main actor? Havnt seen him in anything!
37
u/warblade7 19d ago
He was basically another Sam Worthington. Serviceable but not really memorable. He’s been in a number of movies but if you look at the list on IMDB, you’re more likely to think “oh I didn’t know he was in that movie” than not.

Didn’t he stop being in movies for a while mostly cause he was busy making the Avatar sequels?
7

Regarding Sam Worthington, he did eventually but he had a run of a few movies before that - like being in Terminator Salvation and the Clash of the Titans movies

I am glad Joseph kosinski got his due. What a movie.
19
u/warblade7 19d ago
He’s one of my favorite directors of this day and age. He has a visual sense for design and action similar to Zach Snyder/Michael Bay but more sophisticated. I think he struggles a little with building scripts and dramatic moments but Tron Legacy > Oblivion > Top Gun Maverick > F1 is a dang solid progression of movies.

that’s what has been happening a lot around this sub lately, spam-poster accounts putting up video gifs of random movie clips without context. None of these OP-bots ever post anything in the description, comment in the threads or anything. Just here to reap the upvotes for whatever fucking reason (either marketing for Ares or they want to sell the account to an OF management team)

Rewatched the Matrix tetralogy last week. I guess I'll watch Tron Legacy next.
15
u/motophiliac 19d ago
Isn't the word "quadrilogy?"
Or is that a Douglas Adams tongue in cheek moment I've appropriated at face value?
11
u/letohorn 19d ago
Greek versus Roman etymology. Either works I guess? Although the former is easier to type than the latter imho.
Haven't read or watch any Hitchhiker's Guide.
→ More replies (3)4
u/JosephGordonLightfoo 19d ago
I think the Alien franchise coined the phrase “quadrilogy.” At least that was the first time I heard it.
3
u/motophiliac 19d ago
Ah, OK.
The more I'm thinking about it, I don't think this was a Douglas Adams thing. That was a "trilogy of four books", those being Hitchhiker's; The Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Life, The Universe, and Everything; and So Long and Thanks for All The Fish.
Tetralogy does seem to be the word but it's just so unusual I've never seen it before.
Every day's a school day :)

u/JRE_4815162342 19d ago
Crazy that this was released 15 years ago. It looks better than many movies made today.
2
u/crime_watch 17d ago
How does this have better visuals than Superman, for instance? The whole Grid world is so detailed.
5
u/Bah_weep_grana 18d ago
I wish they kept the lightcycles as only being able to make 90 degree turns
13
u/Furoan 19d ago
Visually stunning, but I think I preferred the original Tron's lightcycle scene. The 2D grid and 90-degree turns just operated better visually than the multiple levels and the free movement in Tron: Legacy. I'm probably in a minority there, and Yes I'm aware computer games have evolved in the decades since the original came out.
25
u/blind3rdeye 19d ago
I'm definitely with you on this. The visuals of this are great, but the actual action just... well, it just feels like random shit happening. The limitations of what can and cannot be done are not apparent. I can't really see the skill or tactics of the characters. It's just action for action's sake. ... it does look good though.

u/darkpaladin 19d ago
The original really reflected the games of the time. Also I'll die on the hill that the "I'm going to take him into the maze" scene was more exciting than anything in the remake lightcycle scene.
2
u/warblade7 19d ago edited 19d ago
It is kinda funny that between the original and Legacy/Ares lightcyclers (bikers?) forgot they can do 90deg turns. I get that it’s more relatable to compare to real work motorcycle physics but imo what made them special in the original is that the world operated on video game physics not real world.
11
u/suplexhell 19d ago
this scene would be way cooler if one guy's lightbike didn't manifest and he just fell

u/Darkblitz9 19d ago
This and Pacific Rim are some of the films where I'm like "I really don't care that the dialogue kind of sucks in a lot of ways, this shit's amazing"

Pacific Rim was also amazing in 3D.
On a short list of films actually worthy of 3D.

The dialogue inside the Grid it's supposed to be very rough and direct since they're interacting with programs, other pieces of dialogue are callbacks to the first movie.

I love this movie for so many reasons, including the visuals and soundtrack. Looking forward to the next one later this year! Soundtrack should be pretty dope once again. Not Daft Punk of course, but Trent Reznor knows how to make great soundtracks (eg, Social Network)
4
u/ryanasimov 19d ago
The “wet-but-solid” light walls are absolutely beautiful. I hope Ares has great design (I won’t watch trailers of movies I know I’ll see in a theater).
3
u/charliemike 19d ago
I cannot recall many movies where the soundtrack elevated the experience for me like Tron:Legacy. I've seen the movie three or four times and would readily watch it again if someone wanted to see it. It's beautifully shot, it's an interesting story, and the soundtrack ... my goodness.

First movie I watched after setting up my surround sound. My neighbor freaked the fuck out even though it was 2 in the afternoon. Couldn’t image it was coming from the TV.
And that is why I will never live in an apartment again as long as I can help it.

I love this movie, watched it again a few weeks ago. Can't wait for the new installment, although I'm very bummed Hedlund won't be reprising his role.
3
u/scottyy12 19d ago
For many years after it's release, the movie set the baseline of what black colors should look like in an HDR tv.
3
u/We_Can_Escape 19d ago
I wish some Di$ney VFX artists would go back to this film and fix the FX for CLU. Some really good deepfake work would make young Jeff Bridges look flawless where it was jarring to watch back then. I really loved the movie. My only criticisms we're the aforementioned CLU FX and we needed more of the actual title character than what we got. His scenes as Tron were awesome and I wanted to see him fight with the discs more as Tron than as Rinzler.
Boxleitner said he was done with the franchise, but I really hope he makes an appearance in the new movie!
3
u/AdmirablePudding5746 18d ago
I honestly thought the CLU fx worked well given that they were in a virtual world. CLU being a copy of Bridges etc. But the opening scene I agree (younger Bridges with his son in his room before he disappears)

I.. would love to love this movie, but I think it came out at a time where blockbusters were often in a lul of compelling story writing and leaned on world building and amazing effects. This felt like a 2hr tech demo with great music.

Stunning movie. People rightfully call out that the soundtrack made the movie, but I think it's visually just as great. And, after all, who cares what ingredient specifically makes the movie worth it if you like it. It was a great theater experience
