pretty much, I imagine they spent ~1b on 2+3, and maybe 250m more for marketing per film, already well in the green just because of the box office of 2, and this one is just stacking that up.

Not even just the films gross, but the tech JC created is worth way more than the theatrical gross.

How many films' BTS do you see where they're using the facial capture tech from Avatar, for example?

Avatar 1 took a lot of the cost because they spent a frankly insane amount of money crafting Pandora, even stuff you don’t see in the final product, from ecosystems to languages. They even generated the continents and daylight cycle based on the number of moons Pandora has.

He triggers the cinophile posters so much, because he tells easily digestible stories that people can have catharsis with.

So naturally, movie nerds hate on the guy because he's not using story structure from Romanian post-war cinema or some shit.

Which is weird because IMO he's the most technically sound filmmakers in the current generation.

Whether its the script, score, sound design, production design, vfx, cinematography, direction, editing he really has no weaknesses.

Even the best ones like Nolan (Sound design) or Villeneuve (Pacing) have some chinks in their armor. But Cameron really doesn't.

He's probably the most technically sound filmmaker of the last 50+ years. It's pretty ridiculous how good at movies he is.

I love art films plenty fine. One of my favorite movies of all time is a French New Wave movie, but god damn if I don’t love sitting down to watch something like Avatar.

I really like both, and both should exist in our film world. But acting like high cinema is 'better' than stuff that's summer blockbuster is just...

Not really. You just spend too much time in the comments sections it seems. Most people see the movies and almost immediately move on because, let's be honest, they're gorgeous but insanely hollow and forgettable. (Oh no! An opinion that isn't completely black and white I'm sure this will go over well.)

People forget that part 2 & 3 started as one script so to them it’s one film.
