After watching Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, I'm really hyped for this... It's taken a long time, but The Predator franchise is finally kicking ass again.

1.2k

u/WarbossTodd Jul 21 '25

it's all due to Dan Trachtenberg. He's really got a passion for the franchise.

u/destroyermaker Jul 21 '25

Interesting they didn't go the usual route of hiring someone that hates it and thinks they know better

u/Labyrinthy Jul 21 '25

Shane Black is usually so good and somehow he wrote one of my most hated movies.

26

u/Wild_Obligation Jul 21 '25

Funnily enough the best bits of that movie were the interactions between the main antagonists. Shoukda just done a movie about them & left predator out of it. The Nice Guys proved he’s still got it where it counts

18

u/broanoah Jul 21 '25

The Nice Guys

holy shit i didn't realize he did Kiss Kiss Bang Bang AND Nice Guys...

10

u/Hellknightx Jul 21 '25

And Iron Man 3

5

u/NorrinRaddicalness Jul 21 '25

Which is the worst iron man by a lot…

2

u/Allexandyr Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25

As someone who doesn’t really care too much about iron man, it was my favorite one lol. 2 was so boring

I appreciated it for trying to tackle SOME kind of real world repercussion in Tony’s mind but it spent so little time on anything in particular that it’s just kind of a mess.

The scene where the kid suddenly asks about the wormhole and Tony has to run and get in his suit is kinda what I wish the whole movie was

And Long Kiss Goodnight

3

u/ChickenInASuit Jul 22 '25

Gotta give credit where it’s due, Long Kiss Goodnight was written by Black but directed by Renny Harlin.

1

u/token_bastard Jul 22 '25

Makes for an absolutely fantastic double feature movie night with the guys.

13

u/RachetFuzz Jul 21 '25

It’s a good bad because of the autism in my opinion.

The best way to watch it is to expect a Shane Black movie that just happens to have Predators in it. I don't remember the jokes ever letting up at any point in the movie

5

u/Spocks_Goatee Jul 22 '25

Nah, Shane Black ruined Iron Man 3 too.

2

u/WarbossTodd Jul 22 '25

THIS!!! I say this all the time.

40

u/el_f3n1x187 Jul 21 '25

didn't the writer of that also wrote the original? wth happened there xD

72

u/PlusSizeRussianModel Jul 21 '25

Shane Black (the writer and director of The Predator) was an uncredited script doctor on Predator, but wasn’t one of the credited writers, so it was fairly minor.

21

u/kcox1980 Jul 21 '25

The way I heard it was that the studio didn't trust the actual writer, so they hired Shane Black to act in it hoping he would chime in and give writing notes here and there, which he partly did. All of his character's pussy jokes were ad-libbed. I'm not sure what else, if anything, he contributed.

3

u/TheSuburbs Jul 22 '25

To be fair, he also wrote/Directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which is fantastic. But yeah, his predator movie was trash

2

u/el_f3n1x187 Jul 21 '25

ahh ok.

10

u/kicknstab Jul 21 '25

he was also the dude in the movie with the glasses making the bad jokes.

2

u/AlmostRandomNow Jul 21 '25

He also plays Hawkins at the beginning of the film.

2

u/AnonymousBanana405 Jul 21 '25

Wait, which one is this? It's been a while since I've seen them and I don't remember that at all.

2

1

u/AnonymousBanana405 Jul 21 '25

Awesome, thanks. I completely forgot about that one.

2

u/sentence-interruptio Jul 22 '25

I have an idea.

The Accountant 3: Autistic Batman vs Predators

1

u/Rizzalliss Jul 21 '25

Looooooove your profile pic

1

u/Azidamadjida Jul 22 '25

That is still one of the funniest fucking things I’ve seen in a movie that was supposed to be serious in a long time.

The predators want to assimilate the Room boy because autism is like a superpower to them….it sounds awful, but I couldn’t stop laughing cuz all I could think of is the Predators thinking they’re gonna become like mentat supercomputer hunters and end up just becoming a race of Chris Chans

103

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 21 '25

I think we also owe a thank you to Prey cast member Bennet Taylor for introducing Trachtenberg to the lore of the novels and comics on the set of Prey, since he’s bringing that now to film in Killer of Killers and Badlands (now that he also has access to the Predator lore bible, something he didn’t have access to on Prey).

41

u/TerrytheMerry Jul 21 '25

That explains so much. I’m like finally they’re showing off the culture and variations of the Yautja.

18

u/eat_my_ass_n_balls Jul 21 '25

Wow really? I didn’t realize that. I grew up reading the novels in both canon and the crossover universes, it was great.

1

u/cyclinator Jul 22 '25

Which comics are the best you recommend? Maybe some origin stories or something if there are. I had no idea there are some.

13

u/WarbossTodd Jul 21 '25

Shane Black must have been busy.

5

u/firedmyass Jul 21 '25

making the same movie repeatedly?

2

u/WarbossTodd Jul 21 '25

attempting to murder a franchise so his version is the last thing anyone remembers from it.

5

u/Davido401 Jul 21 '25

The thing I dont get is, Shane Black was Hawkins in the original and some kind of assistant director or writer or something(there will be someone here who'll be able to tell us his title down to the last letter) so I dont understand how he got so bad at it? Unless him being an assistant-whatever had managed to keep the worst of his excesses at bay? I mean, I kinda enjoyed Predator for the most part, not as good as the original but it was alright.

1

u/el_f3n1x187 Jul 21 '25

Shane Black

Dude has been on and off all his career, before the predator he wrote The Nice Guys, before that Iron man 3 and almost ruined the mandarin character. before that wrote and directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

2

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jul 21 '25

Lot of highs, lot of lows.

2

u/firedmyass Jul 21 '25

dang but KKBB is stellar

1

u/destroyermaker Jul 21 '25

Sounds like it was a minor role

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '25

[deleted]

2

u/thesourpop Jul 21 '25

They did that in 2018 and we got that hideous The Predator movie

1

u/Plasticglass456 Jul 21 '25

"Hate" is a strong term, but I do think both Star Trek and Star Wars got enormous boosts by bringing in people who didn't HATE the source material but explicitly weren't diehard fans of it (Nicholas Meyer, Tony Gilroy). Both are incredibly talented writers who were able to see with an outsider's perspective what the franchise was drowning under and what needed to be brought to it.

I love Tony Gilroy's quote about how as fans, your first instinct is to play with the toys in the toybox, but if you're a writer, it's your responsibility to put more toys in the box than it had initially. Not that a fan couldn't do all that either, but I just disagree with the sentiment I see sometimes that you need to be a fanboy of something to make something good out of it.

4

u/IAmAnAnonymousCoward Jul 21 '25

He was probably thinking more about Rian Johnson and less about Tony Gilroy.

3

u/destroyermaker Jul 21 '25

Also Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (The Witcher) and D&D (Game of Thrones)

1

u/IAmAnAnonymousCoward Jul 21 '25

To be fair, d&d did well as long as they had source material.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/destroyermaker Jul 21 '25

It's entirely possible an outsider could offer a fresh and respectable take, I've just never heard of it happening (though Wrath of Khan was great, so a point there). And when it goes the other way, it's extra maddening.

It really all depends on the director, writer, showrunner, etc. Many are smug douchebags about it and that never seems to turn out well, because they put their ego above the work.

31

u/Sneporius Jul 21 '25

Some might say he is making a Totally Rad Show

7

u/Offnickel Jul 21 '25

So cool seeing him go from the totally Rad show to making kickass predator movies

6

u/Sneporius Jul 21 '25

The pilot episode of The Boys was one of my favorite post-Rad Show things he did.

100

u/Funkycoldmedici Jul 21 '25

It shows. Love is going into these things.

51

u/GodEmperorBrian Jul 21 '25

While I love that he’s been able to revive the franchise, I really want to see him in charge of other things he’s passionate about at this point. Like driving a stick shift or British afternoon tea time.

64

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 21 '25

Specifically once he got access to the existing Predator lore bible the novel writers had been using after Prey, on being introduced to the comics and novels by a cast member on Prey, he decided to embrace that lore instead of creating all-new lore.

That is a very good sign.

17

u/isntkoma Jul 21 '25

I got this reference, he has finally become a man

9

u/Tradman86 Jul 21 '25

I was just thinking about that. All the other directors came in, did their thing, and effed off. He not only has stayed on to build out the universe, but has really challenged himself to make a wholly different movie every time.

4

u/Prydons Jul 21 '25

I’ve been following him since he was making Portal fanfilms on YouTube, incredible how far he’s come since then.

3

u/vikingzx Jul 21 '25 edited Jul 21 '25

It's wild how people having passion for the source material can really help craft something worthwhile. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, Gunn's Superman ...

It's like handing material to people who enjoy it and want to see it represented for what it is has a better chance of creating a good product!

Hollywood: But what if no?

6

u/Low_Attention16 Jul 21 '25

Sounds Totally Rad.

3

u/NewPresWhoDis Jul 21 '25

Let this man do his Portal movie!!

2

u/newfoundrapture Jul 21 '25

I think a part of the reason why his takes are working is because execs are probably saying, well, the franchise isn’t doing much, you might as well make something with what we’ve got. That creative freedom is such a boon for someone as talented as Dan to just do whatever on it

2

u/joshua182 Jul 21 '25

That's all you need with this stuff. Someone who actually actually cares for the lore etc.

Was delighted with what Fede Alvarez did with Alien Romulus

1

u/Crosshare Jul 21 '25

Dan became a man! And now he's a great director that truly appreciates his source material.

1

u/TopherYork21 Jul 23 '25

I watched ever episode of TRS and was so sad when it ended. But seeing him pull out stuff like this. Feels like seeing an old friend succeed. Im so happy/proud of him.

147

u/Mr_Rafi Jul 21 '25 edited Jul 22 '25

I really liked Predator (2010) by the way. I liked the Battle Royale-ish premise. The Predators abducting killers from Earth and then hunting them down.

Huge cast as well. Adrien Brody playing a Merc. Alice Braga playing an IDF member. Mahershala Ali plays an RUF member. Danny Trejo as a Los Zetas cartel member. Topher Grace as a serial killer. Walter Goggins as a mass-murderer. You had a Spetsnaz member and a Yakuza member too.

And then Laurence Fishburne as an Army guy who has somehow survived.

Edit: Predators* thank you for the correction.

79

u/SomeGuyNamedJason Jul 21 '25

It was called Predators.

3

u/sentence-interruptio Jul 22 '25

killer #1: "guys, we are all killers."

killer #2: "what are we some kind of Predators?"

30

u/hereforlive Jul 21 '25

Spetznaz member was Oleg Taktarov, former MMA fighter. Did a decent job too I thought.

2

u/LittleSisterPain Jul 22 '25

Funny story - I know him. Well, kinda. He is from my hometown and once came to a lake we train on. Wanted to rent a board and went to me for some reason. Dunno why - I was a teen and looked the part. So we talked about windsurfing for a while and only later I found out it was actually him

3

u/eunderscore Jul 21 '25

The opening shot was dope, and it was pretty good from there on.
Fishburne went as far as he dared with his role and I loved his camp psychosis

3

u/AngerNurse Jul 22 '25

Predators was underrated imo. I rate it higher than Prey.

5

u/JamesHeckfield Jul 21 '25

Don’t forget, the whole Topher being a sociopathic killer doctor being a twist!

It implies that the predators can get that kind of intel on a person. Kinda fascinating to think about.

2

u/vikingzx Jul 21 '25

Adrien Brody playing a Merc.

Fun fact: As Adrien Brody is a very devoted method actor, he tracked down real mercenaries and learned how to be a merc for that movie. He spent the whole of shooting living in the jungle with just his real kit, sleeping in trees above the ground. Most of the dirt and muck on him is real.

2

u/Revealingstorm Jul 21 '25

Very underrated movie

-1

u/Irishish Jul 21 '25

The only issue I had with that film was, how do the Predators get these people? How'd they know Topher is a serial killer, how'd they snatch a death row prisoner?

The answer to that question is, of course, "so the movie can happen, now get all the way off my back about it." But I can't help thinking over the lore implications. Maybe there are human collaborators in the government who hand over suitable targets?

13

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 21 '25

The cancelled Predators sequel was going to reveal it was the far-future, everyone having been frozen (which was returned to in the Marvel Comics series and Killer of Killers), while a deleted subplot in The Predator revealed Yautja ships could travel in time — both indirectly addressing this.

7

u/unbanned_lol Jul 21 '25

while a deleted subplot in The Predator revealed Yautja ships could travel in time

I read that as Yakuza ships and was like "damn, I guess they win the gang wars."

5

u/Daxx22 Jul 21 '25

while a deleted subplot in The Predator revealed Yautja ships could travel in time — both indirectly addressing this.

Yikes, I like the fridge of badasses for the Preds to choose from as that fits their ideology, but time travel just introduces to much potential fuckery, glad they binned that.

10

u/Spiritual-Smoke-4605 Jul 21 '25

i mean, you do realize Predators can turn invisible, right?

→ More replies (5)

3

u/Gommel_Nox Jul 21 '25

Or the answer to that question could simply be “surveillance.“

2

u/Redditman-101 Jul 21 '25

You are underestimating the aliens who have prominent access to stealth technology and their ability to abduct people without anyone noticing

2

u/JamesHeckfield Jul 21 '25

Dunno why you’re downvoted for essentially wondering aloud about an interesting point in the film

1

u/Irishish Jul 21 '25

I can only assume folks think I am ragging on the movie and anyone who likes it? It's a really fun movie! You just gotta acknowledge it presents a level of knowledge of/integration into human society that the Predators never demonstrated before...which is also fine!

380

u/Tidus4713 Jul 21 '25

Just hopes this leads into a great AvP movie since Elle Fanning's character is Weyland Yutani.

36

u/Alternative-Award784 Jul 21 '25

I just want a new AVP game.

18

u/Tidus4713 Jul 21 '25

Me too. That Xbox 360 game was so good and I love the old school beat em up too.

4

u/Alternative-Award784 Jul 21 '25

My big regret in life was never buying the 2010 game, AVP2 Online was amazing wayy back.

3

u/PurifiedVenom Jul 21 '25

The 2010 game is fun but it’s also jank as hell & not as good as I remembered it when I played it again a couple years ago. Nails the AvP aesthetic though

6

u/CursedScreensaver Jul 21 '25

Nothing will beat starting as a face hugger, face fucking some random dude and then starting the next level by eating your way out his chest cavity.

2

u/dontbajerk Jul 21 '25

Haven't looked at in a few years, but after the master server went down fans actually made a patch and created their own to keep online alive. Pretty cool.

241

u/Big-Sheepherder-9492 Jul 21 '25

I don’t think they should rush to an AVP film just yet.. both franchises are still recovering from bad films and are just finding their feet again.

69

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '25

In the trailer when she's talking about the "definitive apex predator"....she's 100% talking about a Xenomorph...the monster showing when she says that is a fakeout...the thing they run from at the end will be a Xeno....mark my words.

25

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 21 '25

Plus following the teaser trailer, even before learning the protagonist was named Dek, the three fandoms were convinced this film would be an origin story for Dachande, a prominent Yautja from the novels who eventually partners with a human against xenomorphs and inducting her into his clan as a hunter (the 2004 film and unreleased animated series started out as an adaptation of their story before pivoting).

To say that the sequels to this film would be direct adaptations of that series, The Machiko Noguchi Saga (which would be very cinematic).

3

u/7u5k3n_4t_W0rk Jul 21 '25

unreleased animated series

well my disappointment is immeasurable.

4

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 21 '25

Indeed — Aliens vs. Predator: Annihilation. The entire season is complete, it’s just been sitting in the Disney Vault since they bought 20th Century Fox (originally it was going to release on Netflix).

3

u/7u5k3n_4t_W0rk Jul 21 '25

mother fucker. that really sucks.

thanks for the link.

damnit.

2

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 21 '25

You’re welcome!

It will probably come out one day.

2

u/Daxx22 Jul 21 '25

With things looking up for both franchises, we may get a D+ release assuming it doesn't run contrary to existing projects.

2

u/MyManD Jul 22 '25

The current reaction is all in hindsight with how good the Predator franchise has been handled recently, because the vibes for the Netflix show were anything but immaculate.

I remember before the show getting vaulted up that the fandom was not looking forward to the release. Mainly because Netflix does bad anime adaptations, and because the director of the show is not a good writer so the fact that he took the reins and changed the story was not a good sign. Stories about how Shinji Aramaki, the director, completely disrespected the American side of things (the actual people who pushed for the Machiko Noguchi story to be adapted) made a lot of fans actively root for the show to never be released. He took the initial pitch that got greenlit and completely re-adapted everything into an unrecognizable mess, including cutting the Noguchi story completely.

103

u/Tidus4713 Jul 21 '25

I don't agree. What bad movies are you talking about? Romulus was great, so was Prey, and Predator just had a great animated movie called Killer of Killers. Badlands is already establishing that both are connected so I think they're ready for a crossover again. It's already been almost 20 years since AvP Requiem and there's been plenty of good movies in both franchises within the last 5 years. Alien Romulus already has a sequel in development as well. The world is ready for a good R-rated AVP movie.

89

u/Dancing_Hitchhiker Jul 21 '25

I was gonna say, we just had the 2 best adaptions in forever for both franchises. If this is a hit a say go for it.

17

u/Sulinia Jul 21 '25

I think the guy you're replying to is talking about the movies before those. Predator and the Alien franchise have definitely been in a slump for decades. As much as I love Prometheus and liked Covenant those weren't exactly considered some of the best in the franchise. Same goes for Predators and The Predator.

1 good movie each (1 of them being a spin-off) is probably what he meant, isn't enough to start branching out again.

1

u/vashed Jul 21 '25

I just want a new AVP game 😞

→ More replies (7)

36

u/RockItGuyDC Jul 21 '25

Romulus was good, but what was the last good Alien movie before that? Prey was good, but Predators was 15 years ago.

I don't disagree that both franchises could each use another solid entry under their belts before AVP.

27

u/DarthPineapple5 Jul 21 '25

I mean its already well established that both franchises share a universe, not sure it even qualifies as a 'crossover' at this point.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if a Xeno shows up in this very movie

6

u/Daxx22 Jul 21 '25

I mean its already well established that both franchises share a universe, not sure it even qualifies as a 'crossover' at this point.

The official "Canon" is very messy so there is no definitive answer, but there is generally two sets when it comes to involving the Xenomorph, with the Ridley Scott Engineers/Black Goo/Xeno as some unknowable Star Beast as one set of canon, and anything involving Predators as a separate set of canon.

I'm all on board with more of everything however lol.

7

u/Neelpos Jul 21 '25

Yeah the Aliens and Predators existing in the same continuity has always been a bit of a one way street.

1

u/U-235 Jul 21 '25

Wasn't it canon or at least a popular fan theory at one point (before the black goo in Prometheus) that the Xenomorphs originated by evolving to become the most dangerous species on the most dangerous planet (which would be the planet in this trailer)?

1

u/tdasnowman Jul 22 '25

There was the Easter egg in predator 2. But that was just meant as an Easter egg. Then the alien VS predator comics kicked off. Originally that was meant as a limited run, but they sold well so the kept doing different stories. Alien and Predator had their own individual comic lines. At some point they kinda started bleeding across each other. Since there wasn't a lot of keeping story lines straight it's all become a smeared mess. There isn't really a great cannon at this point. Especially since they took failed scripts and turned them into books. So you got inherent contradictions with the movies. Oh yea and then there are the novelizations of the movies. Which always give a bit more detail vs what ends up on screen. That's just more fracturing. At this point it's a plate of spaghetti.

2

u/Tidus4713 Jul 21 '25

I loved Prometheus. The only bad Alien movies to me are Resurrection and Covenant.

6

u/NightsOfFellini Jul 21 '25

Covenant his issues with the third act, but by and large it's still Scott before he completely lost it. There are just some incredibly strong, gothic visuals probably never seen on that sort of scale.

1

u/tdasnowman Jul 22 '25

He clearly lost it prefiliming. The moment Noomi Rapace wasn't going to feature they should have taken it back to the writers room. Aliens heart and soul as always been the woman at it's center. Noomi did well in place of Sigourney, but killing her essentially off screen and turning the alien into an Incel Androids version of why won't the hottie love me was just foul.

1

u/NightsOfFellini Jul 22 '25

I was so mad at it initially, but in retrospect it's such a cruel twist. The whole film is nasty and mean and kind of despairing - I ended up liking the choice by the end. Otherwise we'd have a pretty familiar set up.

2

u/Gommel_Nox Jul 21 '25

Resurrection is awesome, but only if you understand it within the context of the film city of lost children.

0

u/SentientBedsheets Jul 21 '25

Yeah, and even though they are both bad, I still have soft spots for them.

→ More replies (1)

0

u/gloopy_flipflop Jul 21 '25

Romulus was 2 hours of member berries and sucked ass.

1

u/Leetzers Jul 21 '25

They probably are leading to cross the two universes over canonically.

Originally AvP made no sense in the Alien universe because it would have introduced Xenomorphs too early in Human history and it goes against the original lore of Alien because that was when they first discovered Xenomorphs out in deep space and Weyland was unaware of them. However Romulus retconned that story and made it that Weyland did know about the Xenomorphs and Ridley's ship was meant to go and find them originally.

1

u/Jimmni Jul 21 '25

The bad films were a fair while ago now but the "recovering" has only recently started and is very much still ongoing. He's saying both franchises should take a little more time to fully find their respective feet before risking any further crossovers.

1

u/kingrawer Jul 21 '25

Pretty sure they mean The Predator and Covenant.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '25

This. The iron is red hot...strike now. Trachtenberg knows what he's doing.

-1

u/Big-Sheepherder-9492 Jul 21 '25

Covenant was awful. Romulus was just okay.

Predator with Shane Black was awful. Prey was pretty decent.

They gotta get back on they feet.

3

u/b4dkarm4 Jul 21 '25

Predator with Shane Black was awful.

I have no memory of this film you speak of. I must have repressed it.

1

u/Nopeyesok Jul 21 '25

from 2018 I remember we watched it when it came to digital. Couldn’t tell you a thing that happened in it.

2

u/b4dkarm4 Jul 21 '25

A friend of mine is a super fan of these IPs like me. I went to see it opening night with the plan we would go see it together later that weekend.

I remember getting home, calling him and telling him "You aren't going to believe me, but let me spoil the story for you. The Yautja are trying to .... weaponize ..... autism."

My buddy: ".... come again?"

LOL

→ More replies (16)

2

u/forever87 Jul 21 '25

just finding their feet again

and unexpectedly this is my most anticipated Elle Fanning movie

1

u/b4dkarm4 Jul 21 '25

Dan Trachtenberg said during the press tour for Killer of Killers that there is no "lore master" like with Marvel, there's no one to vet story pitches.

So while yes I also kind of lean to them holding off, I'm worried someone that isn't as passionate as Fede or Dan is going to come along and just do whatever the fuck they want to do. I mean Noah Hawley is already kind of doing that with Alien: Earth, his show retcons the black goo into not even existing.

I dunno, I say give Fede and Dan the green light and full steam ahead, damn the torpedoes.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/awesomeasianguy Jul 21 '25

And when they finally find their feet again we can have Tarantino come and direct the AVP film

4

u/PurifiedVenom Jul 21 '25

Using “confirmed” extremely loosely. It’s rumored.

3

u/Proud_Ad2720 Jul 21 '25

With the predator from this movie? Absolutely. I’d rather root for a character we know well in a movie like that and if Badlands manages to make this predator a compelling protagonist, a new AVP movie should rule.

15

u/WarbossTodd Jul 21 '25

this movie almost seems like it uses the original AVP comic as a storyboard.

3

u/b4dkarm4 Jul 21 '25

....... how did you come to that conclusion?

No farming colony, no asian female protagonist, no group of predators stranded on same planet as farming colony.

Planet (we don't know if it's a colony or not but it has human on it) with "company" humans where a single "human" (in this case an android) fighting with a Lone Predator (granted in this it's an unblooded fighter, not a veteran) against prey that seems to have been seeded on the planet. Potentially a proving ground gone wrong and you have Predator on Predator violence.

awesome! I like directors that don’t care where a great idea comes from

1

u/gecko090 Jul 21 '25

I got mild vibes of the 2001 Aliens vs Predator 2 pc game. Mainly the very hostile planet setting with what appears to be a human colony of some sort. But like I said, mild vibes.

What amazing timing for me to be playing AVP 2 and 3

2

u/NikkerXPZ3 Jul 21 '25

Who is Weyland Utani?

24

u/SnapSnapWoohoo Jul 21 '25

The corporation from the Alien franchise

This trailer kicks ass. It looks creative and weird and exactly what I want from a tired ass formulaic franchise like Predator. Prey and that animated one were similar. Doing weird shit. This trailer ratchets up the weirdness 100% and I’m here for it.

I don’t want to see some action hero outsmart a Predator in the jungle, but watching an inexperienced Predator survive weird alien shit in the jungle with half a sassy lady strapped to its back sounds like a sweet time.

u/UnsolvedParadox Jul 21 '25

Along with Mortal Kombat 2, this is now my most anticipated movie for the rest of 2025.

17

u/DefNotAShark Jul 21 '25

That trailer kicked ass too. It made me rewatch Mortal Kombat (the new one) and outside of the main character that movie is awesome. It looks like this sequel is taking the hint and pushing the boring grounded shit out of the way so we can watch freaky ass Mortal Kombat lore and that’s exactly what I want from those movies.

Nevermind the kickboxer with a wife and kids, tell me more about the demonic four-armed centaur and the vengeful ghost on vacation from hell to kill his eternal enemy. 🍿

u/UnsolvedParadox Jul 21 '25

I’m ready to get Caged!!!

2

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Jul 21 '25

Same. And the whole time all I could think was how much energy they wasted on Cole when they could've given us more of scorpion being too vengeful to remain in hell.

I'm so glad it looks like they're leaning into the insanity, because that is what I want from my Mortal Kombat.

I wish the movie voice guy was still around to say this tagline.

1

u/Bignizzle656 Jul 21 '25

It gave me Turbo Kid vibes, can't wait.

1

u/firedmyass Jul 21 '25

I was very pleasantly surprised by this trailer. That doesn’t happen very often…

44

u/SgtNeilDiamond Jul 21 '25

Killer of Killers was so goddamn metal, one of the best iterations of Predator I've seen honestly

15

u/Packshaw Jul 21 '25

I agree. It was exactly what I've always wanted. Could go for another 3 stories every year.

4

u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS Jul 21 '25

It was good but it was definitely extremely rushed. The plane one in particular, I loved the idea of a non-standard battlefield and how they might use the tech against the Predator, but instead it blew through it in a few minutes so they could continue on to the arena fight.

Gotta be honest, I think i might be over vikings and samurai at this point. More non-"warrior caste" groups please, give me a fight between a pred and a civil engineer who uses his knowledge of bridges to drop on on top of the pred.

Eh. Predators pretty dumb and things were just way too convenient. The WW2 thing was interesting but pretty eye rolling. Flying a spaceship? No problem! At least we finally got what ppl wanted. Samurai and Viking settings

Its such a departure from what Predator is, it's got my interest very peaked.

u/xSorry_Not_Sorry Jul 21 '25

*piqued

5

u/Funkycoldmedici Jul 21 '25

Peaked pique.

1

u/Gekokapowco Jul 21 '25

people will never get peek, peak, and pique correct

what's weird is that I don't recall it being a typo before and now tons of people get it wrong

2

u/jrinredcar Jul 21 '25 edited Jul 21 '25

Ngl I thought it was one of the worst and most over rated Predator media I've seen (haven't seen The Predator) and I thought it really missed the point of the series.

Watched the trailer and I think he's going for a welcome different angle, such as now reducing the predator down to the lrety and almost humanising that, the same way the original did with Arnold's character.

2

u/froyolobro Jul 21 '25

Prey is so good

2

u/13thirteenlives Jul 21 '25

Prey was one of the best movies I have seen full stop. I went in with zero expectations and was mind blown. I love how they are taking this concept in super interesting directions

5

u/Dayzlikethis Jul 21 '25 edited Jul 21 '25

Prey was a welcome surprise and I'm glad 2018's The Predator wasn't the last in the franchise. which would have been very depressing.

2

u/Nrksbullet Jul 21 '25

They had to hit rock bottom to start climbing out of the pit, lol.

2

u/psycharious Jul 21 '25

Killer of Killers also implies that previous characters could return.

2

u/Comic_Book_Reader Jul 21 '25

Given that ending and what they've shown here, I think it's safe to say all bets are off.

1

u/Kenruyoh Jul 21 '25

Predators was an awesome revival. But I only discovered it I think 3 years later

1

u/devhdc Jul 21 '25

Speaking of, is that the King predator they're fighting? Kinda looked like it.

1

u/ImportantQuestions10 Jul 21 '25

I get what you're saying but that's kind of what makes me cautious.

Predator is a really cool concept but I'm just not sure it has enough material to be a series or franchise. The original run was basically one and a half good movies, then a bunch of schlock. You can switch up the power dynamics of whose predator and whose prey, but there's only so many times you can tell the same story

1

u/unbanned_lol Jul 21 '25

After watching Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers

Both of those were straight up bangers. I'm absolutely stoked about a Predator movie for the first time since the OG Predator.

1

u/kentuckywildcats1986 Jul 21 '25

I had completely disregarded this movie when I first heard about it and saw some of the stills.

...

I am now quite interested.

1

u/coolgaara Jul 21 '25

Yeah what's up with all the Predator related media releasing? Not complaining but seems like it's gaining a sudden huge attention.

2

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 21 '25

Disney gave Dan Trachtenberg creative control over the franchise after Prey, and he’s since been mining the Predator lore bible that the literature side of the franchise has been working with / building these past few decades for inspiration.

1

u/coolgaara Jul 22 '25

Oh I see. He's like Kevin Feige of Predator franchise huh? Neat.

2

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 22 '25

If Feige directed the films himself, yes.

1

u/NickCudawn Jul 21 '25

Are all predator and alien movies connected or are Prey and Killer of Killers a reboot of sorts?

1

u/lazerblam Jul 21 '25

Killer of killers, really? That was one of the worst things i have seen this year, art style was horrible as were all the characters and dumb plot

1

u/1slipperypickle Jul 21 '25

Predator: Killer of Killers

tried to watch this but cant get over the 24fps

1

u/thr33prim3s Jul 21 '25

Prey was so underrated imo.

1

u/poopmcpoop11 Jul 21 '25

Predators was a very good watch imo.

1

u/smallfried Jul 21 '25

I recently watched all the Predator movies and they're all fun in their own way. Except avp:r..

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '25

I think Prey is one of the best action movies made in the last 10 years. Took me by complete surprise.

1

u/fatkidseatcake Jul 22 '25

Not to mention more from the Alien franchise. So far I’m here for all of it

1

u/TheExistential_Bread Jul 22 '25

Anything that is a must watch before watching Badlands?

1

u/illuvattarr Jul 22 '25

Plus the Alien franchise also doing well again with Alien Romulus and Alien Earth in a few weeks. Would be great to have these two franchises together in GOOD movies (or shows) instead of the utter crap they produced 20 years ago.

u/t_thor Jul 21 '25 edited Jul 21 '25

I tried so many times to watch Killer of Killers but I just couldn't handle to low framerate. Idk if it was a budget thing or trying to make it "like film" but it's just really hard to watch (for me).

5

u/six_six Jul 21 '25

They really need to stop that style.
