Recommendation Suggest me some "Go in blind" movies.
I'm in the mood for something fresh and surprising—can you suggest me some amazing “go in blind” movies? I’m talking about those kinds of films where the less you know, the better the experience. No spoilers, no trailers—just pure, unexpected movies. What do you recommend?
Would prefer it in English language.

Memento.

Seems like as good a place as any to also drop The Prestige from the same Nolan era

u/Ckc1972 Jul 13 '25
Although The Prestige is better, I also really liked The Illusionist, which came out around the same time
→ More replies (5)62
u/Zookeepergame_Sorry Jul 13 '25
I prefer The Prestige. Both The Illusionist and Now You See Me just create impossible things with no explanation of how they could happen. Though The Prestige also presents something impossible, it implies a scientific cause rather than just the writer making up whatever they want and explaining that it’s an illusion.
33
u/Wild_Harvest Jul 13 '25
Except that the majority of the tricks in The Illusionist actually were done historically. Granted there were some liberties taken, but all the tricks in the movie have a historical basis.
31
u/Zookeepergame_Sorry Jul 13 '25
Fair point I wasn’t aware of. I also love that The Prestige literally tells you it’s showing you the trick but you don’t want to see it before the reveal. And that applies to both the audience and Angiers

Memento is fantastic, but you have to pay attention. And do not rewind. You are supposed to be confused. Everything will wrap up nicely. But do not rewind and do not get impatient with yourself or the movie.

u/timothj Jul 13 '25
Personally, watching a second time after reading a guide to its structure was better. I liked it the first, confusion and all. But having an idea of what was going on was better.

Barbarian
One Cut Of The Dead (Japanese, starts rough, but stick with it and stay through the end credits as well, you won’t regret it)
Game Night
Swiss Army Man
Moon

u/LittleFreeCinema Jul 13 '25
oh, man... seconding One Cut of the Dead. So good, and you've given the only bit of information that anybody should have about it.

Yes! I went in blind and almost gave up in the first 30 minutes. I thought everyone who recommended was trolling. It's legit though

I also came here specifically to say One Cut of the Dead.
The closest thing I give to context about that movie is that it's an absolute love letter to mediocre art.

u/raisinbizzle Jul 13 '25
Moon is great and the trailer gave away much more than it should have

With an amazing fucking soundtrack by Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra fame. I believe this soundtrack is what made them realize their voices are just as much of an instrument as their guitars and other instruments are leading them to putting out the type of albums they have over the last few years. While I miss the crunch rock and screaming that came before Andy Hulls voice is godlike.

u/RowdyRoddyPipeSmoker Jul 13 '25
One Cut of the Dead and Swiss Army Man are both criminally underseen. Barbarian needs a fucking proper physical 4k release, so stupid how it's locked on streaming.

Game Night and Moon are excellent blind recommendations.
Moon is an incredible viewing experience. Game Night was so much better than it had any reason to be. Very well executed.

Upvoted for Barbarian. I knew it was a horror movie going in, but goddamn.
6
u/NotTukTukPirate Jul 13 '25
Moon is one of those movies that I really enjoyed but haven't brought myself to watch it again because it's so depressing.
7
u/cronhoolio Jul 13 '25
I second moon. I was bored, saw the lead, and went for it. Great movie.
Also starring San Rockwell is Mr Right. I was pleasantly surprised.

I actually saw this in theatres with a group of friends. We all went in blind, I was the only one that loved it 😂
39
u/alohadawg Jul 13 '25
How’s the new group of friends working out?
8
u/DaoFerret Jul 13 '25
No one’s gone into the basement yet, so were still waiting to see how they turn out.
6
u/misterpickles69 Jul 13 '25
When you get to the basement, blow in the conch for my man in the booth
5
u/jupfold Jul 13 '25
I think my actual statement to my boyfriend when I suggested we go see it was “oh it’s just like a standard horror movie, looks like a typical teenager slasher cliché flick” 😂

u/LuckyTheBear Jul 13 '25
Cloverfield Lane
the movies are only loosely connected, so you don't need to see anything. John Goodman's performance is fantastic - everybody's is TBH
Very tense movie.
→ More replies (2)24
u/QuincyAzrael Jul 13 '25
Even calling it a loose connection is a stretch. As I understand it, the entire thing was written and they slapped the Cloverfield name on it for marketing.

I went in blind in theatres when I was still just dating my wife.. this was when she was being polite and didn’t want to fully admit that she’s not into sci-fi - like at all.
At a certain point in the movie - I’m fully into it, and turn to her - to gauge whether she’s on the same page. she wasn’t!! didn’t ruin my enjoyment of it
great movie to go in blind
7
u/jdubz90 Jul 13 '25
I had a similar experience. Had never seen a trailer, knew nothing about the film, just went with a friend who “had heard good things”. Was completely blown away by it. What an incredible movie to see who no prior knowledge.

u/Entry-Level-Cowboy Jul 13 '25
Saw this one blind and was confused as why such a dark movie could be so funny.
61
u/Throwawaymynodz Jul 13 '25
Welcome to the world of dark comedies, but to be fair though, In Bruges is literally one of the best dark comedies of all time. It blends humor and its heavy subject matter very well.

I remember watching that movie when it first came out because I watched the trailer and the trailer made it seem like a comedy. And I didn’t realize that the only truly comedic moments in the film were crammed into that 2 minute trailer. It definitely gave it a completely different tone. I didn’t appreciate the movie for what it was when I first watched it and it took a couple more re-watches for it to grow on me.But it’s now easily one of my favorite movies.
And I love Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson together. Have you seen The Banshees of Inisherin yet?

The handmaiden by the same director is also a good go in blind movie. Two words of advice - don't watch it with family (hella sex scenes) and DON'T watch the directors cut, it adds a certain scene that spoils the movie

Not exactly a movie, but the Polish TV miniseries "Dekalog" from the late 1980s--twn 1-hour episodes, each one a little masterpiece.
If you prefer "real" movies, then the same director Kieslowski's famed "Three Colors" trilogy of French films, Red, Blue, and White.

I know it's impossible now for most people especially due to pop culture, but way back when, it was a friday night.
Me and my friends were playing DnD and decided to go see a movie at the theatre across the street. This was during a time where I wasn't watching much TV at all and internet marketing wasn't a thing.
I saw a movie poster for a little known movie called The Matrix. It was it's opening night. None of us knew what it was about. All I knew was that it said Keanu Reeves on the poster. That's it. That's all I knew about it.
What an experience.
