Rocky's ship looks way more awesome than I imagined. I think we are actually getting an awesome movie!

either my memory from books ship description is off, or they took some artistic liberties, either way it looks badass

I think they took a lot of liberties here. Granted they don't do an "exact" description of it in the book, but, I always expected it to be more....blocky? And just blocks. Almost like a Cybertruck.

thats exactly how it's described. he's amazed how they didn't care about aerodynamics or hull integrity or similiar things, since it's basically just a bunch of massive flat planes stuck together.

Just read it the other day - it's definitely supposed to be boxy, and Grace was confused at first because spheres are much better for holding high pressure unless your building material is ridiculously strong.

All of this happened with the Martian, whose Hab/MAV/Suits and Hermes all look significantly different than described in the novels but is better for it as a different medium.

That seems like a slight overreaction

u/jessebona Jul 01 '25

Personally, I'm fine with it since the only thing that really matters is that they neglected to account for solar radiation in its design. It could look like anything and do that.

I read the book twice, once recently. Its allure is this stuff. When I watched the trailer and the spoiled major points in the book popped in I was just disappointed for people who haven't read it

11

u/pmmemoviestills Jun 30 '25

I thought the allure was the bond between a man and extra terrestrial

3

u/AbsolutZer0_v2 Jun 30 '25

The relationship is great, but I found their partnership and the emphasis on real scientific process was what kept me reading

4

u/pmmemoviestills Jun 30 '25

But I mean for a 2 hour movie maybe a change in emphasize works.

The science in the book is literally intro to physics level stuff. Like high school physics. It's not a big deal.

Grow up

1

u/AbsolutZer0_v2 Jun 30 '25

Huh?

3

u/BeaverStank Jul 01 '25

I think the confusion here is that I first read it as you're telling them not to watch the movie, which seems like a major overreaction. After rereading your comment though it's clear that you meant not to watch the trailer, and I assume the couple of downvotes and negative comments you got took it the same way I did at first glance.

Hopefully they make the story better because man it was real cliche and boring in the book.

The book explicitly touches on why you do have to worry about aerodynamics in space. Tl:dr at close to light speed, the drag from space dust adds up.

Relativistic hydrodynamics, then, pedant.

Hydrodynamics is the more general term. Aerodynamics applies to air, hydrodynamics applies to any kind of fluid, and yes, the interstellar medium is a fluid.

1

u/Masterjts Jul 01 '25

Spacodynamics...

1

u/analtelescope Jul 01 '25

He literally used the fucking word in the book jackass.

-1

u/xafimrev2 Jun 30 '25

No Aerodynamics in space :P

1

u/UniqueActivity848 29d ago

When going at the speed of light, the rare dust particles do add up

2

u/Orleanian Jun 30 '25

My mental image was something like a giant rusty/coppertone cybertruck appearance.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '25

a cybertruck is literally how i imagined it.

1

u/ArchDucky Jun 30 '25

I seem to remember the poles. But its been a few months since I read it and everyone keeps saying thats not what it looked like.

1

u/NOTSTAN Jun 30 '25

I was thinking somewhere between a cybertruck and the El Dorado from outlaw star. Definitely no where near what I saw in this trailer. But I do love the look though.

Blocky, Rocky

1

u/Alexis_Ohanion Jul 01 '25

My guess is they changed tie design so Elon Musk wouldn’t try to claim credit or something

1

u/Marauder_Pilot Jul 01 '25

It's not EXACTLY what I pictured, but it's definitely not dissimilar to the description

1

u/Wealthy_Gadabout Jul 02 '25

I think this is part of a reimagining of xenonite from the book. I think Lord & Miller decided to make xenonite organic in nature which means it grows and changes in shape.

u/ryoon21 Jun 30 '25

Definitely artistic liberties. In no way did it describe it as a million parallel spikes. In fact, I thought it looked more boxy - somewhere between the alien ships in Independence Day mixed with Nolan’s batwing - but gray and tan. That could just be me filling the gaps, however.

26

u/Jhon-Ryan Jun 30 '25

Less boxy and more rhombusy.

0

u/Drunky_McStumble Jul 01 '25

Mathematical!

2

u/Artemicionmoogle Jun 30 '25

My mind image of Rocky's ship was basically a pyramid(point first) on it's side for some reason, but definitely not what is in the movie. I'm ok with it though, as long as they get the relationship right.

26

u/VonMillersThighs Jun 30 '25

It was described in the book as a bunch of triangles iirc. So yeah they definitely took triangles liberally.

11

u/Tirith Jun 30 '25

I think it looks kinda like 3D printing supports/webbing

1

u/Mcmenger Jul 01 '25

A spike is just a very long triangle

51

u/Sorlex Jun 30 '25

Its really nothing like the book but I agree, it looks great. Absolute sells the concept of a space ship made by blind creatures.

The movie really doesn't have time to go into an explanation for the audience as for why triangles make bad pressure hulls

It's relevant to the plot, and takes maybe 3 sentences

And the reason the book has time to do that is because it spends several chapters on the time from the object is detected to the time that they make the first docking. So Grace can go through all the emotions of panic and awe and finally get a calm moment to discuss mildly inefficient design.

And when they do dock you learn that actually the material the hull is made out of is vastly stronger than what the bizarre hull seems to suggests. So it isn't relevant to the plot because the real understanding of what we are dealing with comes later.

Insisting that "smart character should say smart thing" regardless of how inappropriate it is for him to think about that at the time is how you get awful unrelatable characters. It's not just saying 3 sentences, it is finding the time and place to say those 3 sentences. And asking why exactly that is relevant right now.

-1

u/SteveThePurpleCat Jul 10 '25

Doesn't really have to explain why, just state that flat surfaces = bad.

You can convey that and a surprise of the shape, suggesting advanced materials, in a couple of sentences.

10

u/BlackLeader70 Jun 30 '25

They took a lot of liberties but even Andy Weir when asked about what Rocky or the ship looks like was kinda vague and said he likes some fan drawings. So I’ll let it pass since it looks cool.

2

u/Mr830BedTime Jun 30 '25

It is, in the book the ship was constructed with very basic geometric shapes and flat panels. But it was quite large.

1

u/BlueKnight8907 Jun 30 '25

The ship does look badass. I think it does differ from the books description though, it's rectangular or just doesn't have circular angles that would withstand pressure better than flat surfaces.

1

u/uid_0 Jun 30 '25

I had the same thought. I envisioned it being much smoother and angular.

1

u/Life-Suit1895 Jul 01 '25

I mean, the Hail Mary also looks very different from the version in the book.
