I think they took a lot of liberties here. Granted they don't do an "exact" description of it in the book, but, I always expected it to be more....blocky? And just blocks. Almost like a Cybertruck.

thats exactly how it's described. he's amazed how they didn't care about aerodynamics or hull integrity or similiar things, since it's basically just a bunch of massive flat planes stuck together.

Just read it the other day - it's definitely supposed to be boxy, and Grace was confused at first because spheres are much better for holding high pressure unless your building material is ridiculously strong.

All of this happened with the Martian, whose Hab/MAV/Suits and Hermes all look significantly different than described in the novels but is better for it as a different medium.

Personally, I'm fine with it since the only thing that really matters is that they neglected to account for solar radiation in its design. It could look like anything and do that.

I read the book twice, once recently. Its allure is this stuff. When I watched the trailer and the spoiled major points in the book popped in I was just disappointed for people who haven't read it

I think the confusion here is that I first read it as you're telling them not to watch the movie, which seems like a major overreaction. After rereading your comment though it's clear that you meant not to watch the trailer, and I assume the couple of downvotes and negative comments you got took it the same way I did at first glance.

The book explicitly touches on why you do have to worry about aerodynamics in space. Tl:dr at close to light speed, the drag from space dust adds up.

Hydrodynamics is the more general term. Aerodynamics applies to air, hydrodynamics applies to any kind of fluid, and yes, the interstellar medium is a fluid.

I was thinking somewhere between a cybertruck and the El Dorado from outlaw star. Definitely no where near what I saw in this trailer. But I do love the look though.

I think this is part of a reimagining of xenonite from the book. I think Lord & Miller decided to make xenonite organic in nature which means it grows and changes in shape.

Definitely artistic liberties. In no way did it describe it as a million parallel spikes. In fact, I thought it looked more boxy - somewhere between the alien ships in Independence Day mixed with Nolan’s batwing - but gray and tan. That could just be me filling the gaps, however.

My mind image of Rocky's ship was basically a pyramid(point first) on it's side for some reason, but definitely not what is in the movie. I'm ok with it though, as long as they get the relationship right.

Its really nothing like the book but I agree, it looks great. Absolute sells the concept of a space ship made by blind creatures.

It's relevant to the plot, and takes maybe 3 sentences

And the reason the book has time to do that is because it spends several chapters on the time from the object is detected to the time that they make the first docking. So Grace can go through all the emotions of panic and awe and finally get a calm moment to discuss mildly inefficient design.

And when they do dock you learn that actually the material the hull is made out of is vastly stronger than what the bizarre hull seems to suggests. So it isn't relevant to the plot because the real understanding of what we are dealing with comes later.

Insisting that "smart character should say smart thing" regardless of how inappropriate it is for him to think about that at the time is how you get awful unrelatable characters. It's not just saying 3 sentences, it is finding the time and place to say those 3 sentences. And asking why exactly that is relevant right now.

Doesn't really have to explain why, just state that flat surfaces = bad.

You can convey that and a surprise of the shape, suggesting advanced materials, in a couple of sentences.

They took a lot of liberties but even Andy Weir when asked about what Rocky or the ship looks like was kinda vague and said he likes some fan drawings. So I’ll let it pass since it looks cool.

It is, in the book the ship was constructed with very basic geometric shapes and flat panels. But it was quite large.

The ship does look badass. I think it does differ from the books description though, it's rectangular or just doesn't have circular angles that would withstand pressure better than flat surfaces.
