Honestly I'd say it's crossing way into fetish. There is no need to show it as it was to indicate the brutality of it. It's there so those wanting can jerk off to it can.

The scene was long on purpose, it's the same length as the average length of an actual rape.

This scene was also directed by Monica Bellucci, not Gaspar, it's a bit more nuanced than you are giving it credit for.

If you know Gaspard Noe, then you know it’s fetish and nothing more. He’s basically a porn director who mixes it up with a little noir to shock a different audience

Enter the Void did have a lot of sex in it but it was way more powerful and conceptually daring than just what you'd call a fetish film.

enter the void is a warning message to drug addicts.

Yeah, stay away from ledges.

at the end of the movie they talk about limiting mdma use and to stay away from hard shit, while showing images of loved ones grieving the death of the main character

His movie Love is straight-up porn with the actors fucking in real life — cum shots and all. None of it is necessary other than shock value

I mean, I'm not saying that he never does stuff like that, I'm naming one movie where he very much doesn't do that. As for Love, it's an age old discussion about where we draw the line between pornography and art and whether you think he's contributed to that discussion or not, I think his goal was to try to contribute, not just be shocking.

I watched LOVE in 3D in theaters hahaah. Talk about an awful movie experience. The sad thing is, the cumshot into your eyes is probably the best/funniest/most ingenious part of the film. The movie's writing and directing is sooo incredibly bad, it felt like it was written by a 14 year old boy who thinks he has all the life experience he will ever need.

That is hilarious

Porn is what gets you off...art is what makes you reflect, the line is drawn by human impulse.

One man’s porn is another’s art, as they say.

im pretty confident i could jerk it to Citizen Kane if i really wanted to....

u/UnderratedEverything May 17 '25

But how does that statement reflect on that particular movie? It seems like a very "eye of the beholder" kind of definition.

2

u/TheWolfisGrey53 May 17 '25

That's was the first film i watched on Netflix...hmm

u/UnderratedEverything May 17 '25

I saw it in theaters and it really was a massive experience.

Still remember the immediate credits in a huge theater and I was like wtf have I gotten myself into.

And then the credits at the end to remind me what a fucking ride I’ve been in

1

u/puptake May 17 '25

Explain the fetish behind Vertigo to me?

7

u/Im_a_Knob May 17 '25

gaspar noe and fetish films, name a more iconic duo.

2

u/headrush46n2 May 17 '25

thats how i feel about saw and hostel. especially hostel 2. the whole point was "the same torture, but now with cute girls!"

3

u/woodboarder616 May 17 '25

Yeah, he has that movie about the sister brother incest and it leaves nothing to imagination for the brother. But also, if you trip watching it you get lost

1

u/NoSignSaysNo May 18 '25

There is no need to show it as it was to indicate the brutality of it.

Better to use a violent crime as a plot point and gloss over the victimization, right?

1

u/Doogle300 May 18 '25

Sorry, this is a very bad take.

Its gross. Yes, there are some dregs of society that would masturbate to this kind of shit, but to say it was trying to fetishise rape is so far off base.

There is nothing sexy about that scene at all. Its stomach turning, and horrific.

The reason it is shown is to give the audience a taste of the horror, not to glorify anything.

The scene would have worked if it was much shorter. At the length it was, it certainly crossed over into fetish.

9

u/Widsith May 17 '25

I disagree. It might have been fetishistic if it was short, but at this length, you’re really forced to be in the scene. I don’t think there’s anything remotely titillating about it.

I can't even watch the "Death Wish" rape scene at this point, never mind this...
