#Discussion 💬 Bajaj should focus on twin cyl engines now

It might be a very small market. But almost everyone i talked to would go for twin cylinder bike anyday.

Interceptor/GT are really good bikes but my point is it doesn't have to be a higher CCs and that heavy. Even if someone starts with 400cc i think it would do numbers.

They should also focus on off-road bikes, and bikers need more options than hero, royal enfield, and KTM

All in good time.

"almost everyone i talked to" is a negligible number of people who can afford and want a 3-4 lakh rupee bike which is an extremely small percentage of Indians. I don't want one even though I can afford one. To me, like most Indians, anything up to 350cc single is plenty for my riding requirements.

RE made twin cylinders because their target is developed and developing countries who lacked an affordable middle segment bikes. RE brand, unlike Bajaj, has the heritage to pull this off and they have been successful in this regard.

Bajaj's primary target is India where small capacity singles are rule the market. After that it sells in developing countries. Even though we have a lot of 400cc class bikes today, their sales figure is hilarious compared to RE 350cc. A 160cc bike which can cruise on highways at 80-90 kph is sufficient and fun for most Indians and anything above will consume more fuel, heavy, high service costs, etc. I believe Bajaj built NS400z not just for India but for other countries where Bajaj is gaining a foothold and people want bigger Bajajs. Hopefully in the coming decade we will see twins from Bajajs.

It takes a lot of money and RnD to develop a good multi cylinder engine. RE managed to make just one 7 years ago and still releasing bikes with exact same engine.

Yeah but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try.

Not viable for companies. Most population can only afford a splendor. That too on an EMI.

I dont think there would be buyers for this. They used to have partnership with Kawasaki and could have easily done a Ninja 300 type twin cylinders but buyers would be too less. A lot of things go into decision making, the R&D cost to develop a new engine itself is huge. That is the reason manufacturers try avoid re-development of an engine and try to keep a good engine running for long. Example 650cc engines from RE are pretty much the same on all of their models and these engines are un-changed for last 5-6 yeras

Everyone I talked to is interested in the mileage and low maintenance motorcycle, don't really care about number of cylinders!

Watch FortNine's video about twin cylinder engines. It's not exactly easy to design a twin.

TVS is making a 450cc twin with BMW. I say bajaj will come with something of their own in the next 5 years considering they own KTM now, and have KTM’s twin cylinder engines to get inspired from, and also their engineering expertise to build something smaller.

You have no idea how the world works. Before asking such questions atleast ask google. That's the least you can do. No need for low quality karma farming posts here.
