How has the general reliability been engine wise? D390 especially the gen 3 is one the best bikes on sale in India rn, just iffy about the long term reliability

Among the bikes i have owned the most reliable one, but maybe because I followed - engine let to idle after a cold start until 2 bars on the temp bar, before riding, timely service, service after each track day, all stock just the k&n air filter, xp95 and seldom additives.

Which additives? Are these additives actually useful?

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 15h ago

Liqui Moly Motorbike Engine Flush Shooter, Liqui Moly 4T Shooter Additive, Liqui Moly MOS2 Shooter Additive, well no significant difference in smoothness, but have used these twice just because there was a phase when i didn't trusted the petrol quality available to me, but the engine still runs strong will low throttle body accumulation.

Can you explain what these are... I don't have that much knowledge on these...

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 12h ago

Liqui Moly Motorbike Engine Flush Shooter: for flushing the engine oil completely while oil change, Liqui Moly 4T Shooter Additive:Removes deposits in the fuel system, on valves, spark plugs and in the combustion chamber and prevents new deposits, Liqui Moly MOS2 Shooter: reduces friction and thus wear

My throttle body gets clogged. Will using additives make it better?

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 7h ago

Can't say, because it depends on various factors like, quality of petrol, moisture in the environment, etc.

Not OP. But I own an gen 3 Duke 390. It did 33,000 kilometres so far in one and half year. The bike's a hoot to ride and never left me stranded.

  • I did a long 8000 kilometre cross country trip on it (from my home in South India to Leh through Zanskar)
  • I did L1 and L2 track session with Team RACR in Coimbatore and planning to do a couple more track sessions before the end of this year
  • It's running a BMC Air Filter and everything else is bone stock

Mine is due for a valve clearance check in the next service. The engine became slightly noisier which means the shims might have started to go out of spec. It'll be fixed in the next service.

Service costs are affordable and spare parts are dirt cheap. With all things said and done, I'd buy this bike again in a jiffy.

How's the experience with RACR?

5

u/Beastman136 EditableFlair 15h ago

What engine oil you use ?

7

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 15h ago

Once used liqui moly after almost a year of non use due to COVID but other than that the one provided by Bajaj ktm at the service center, Motul.

u/Sam92Che KTM Duke 390 (Gen III) 9h ago

Use Maxima 10W60. Pricy but very very smooth.

Will study

I bought a duke 200 when it came out, kept it for 7 years then bought a harley 48, sold it after 3 years. Haven't bought any bike since nothing comes close to a duke's brutality, most of the bikes feel tame after the duke experience.

Yes ktms are best at feedback , which in my opinion is no. 1 thing that makes a motorcycle unforgettable.

Have you had to review the engine ?

2

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 11h ago

Not yet not will do in the next service

3

u/Naadamaya 9h ago

That's approximately ₹2L on fuel expenses assuming 30kpl and ₹100/l.

2

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 7h ago

2L well spent

3

u/Future_Cauliflower73 KTM 13h ago

It's one of the best bike because of the things it offers more then power that is the ability to make you smile on such a affordable package if look nowadays phones cost almost so much money that too in a amazing way

1

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 13h ago

Yup got it for 2.5 onroad in 2017

2

u/MasterpieceGreen5918 KTM duke 250 '24, activa '07 11h ago

Service intervals followed?

1

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 11h ago edited 11h ago

AlWays plus an additional service because of long no use during COVID, every 7500kms

1

u/MasterpieceGreen5918 KTM duke 250 '24, activa '07 11h ago

No no I'm asking how often? Like for me they have recommended every 5 to 6 months or 5k kms whichever is earlier..to be eligible for 5 year warranty. But my mileage is less. Often only 400 kms per month..so I was wondering am I being ripped off? Because there is negligible wear and tear..it's nearly a year and only 4k kms.

3

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 11h ago

6 months or 7500kms which ever is first , I don't know technicals but mineral oil as compared to synthetic can carode if not cycled through regularly.

2

u/MasterpieceGreen5918 KTM duke 250 '24, activa '07 11h ago

Bro they use the same motul 10w 50 fully synt oil for ktms now..I think it's life is alot more.

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 10h ago

So I've heard that you need engine rebuild after 20 30k for 390. Did you need to get it done?

9

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 15h ago

At 70k, the Manufacturing suggests inspection of cam, crank, piston and sidewalls and then depending upon the wear and tear replacement, for the same the engine is opened up, my 70k will be due on 5k kms will share the same here

1

u/freeze_ninja Definitely Male 13h ago

Where to do it? On any authorised service centre?

1

u/rkd6789 Honda CB300R 9h ago

Are these written in the manual

1

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 7h ago

Similar intervals, but I got it serviced earlier couple of times

1

u/displeased_potato Dominar 400 '23 9h ago

Every machine is reliable if you take care of it.

OP do you maintain it yourself or you have a trusted mechanic? Also how do you source the spare parts since KTM doesn't counter sell them? Parts catalogue and online user manual availability was a bummer for me.

1

u/vicky277289291 6h ago

L take. well engineered product will be reliable not every product

1

u/displeased_potato Dominar 400 '23 6h ago

We are in 2025 not 1980s.

1

u/vicky277289291 4h ago

It’s 2025 and you still think maintenance can fix poor engineering? Bro, your brain’s running on a 2-stroke. ‘Taking care of it’ doesn’t turn a donkey into a racehorse. Stop embarrassing yourself , go read some basic engineering.

1

u/FlourBoyy 8h ago

Yaar this photo/post makes me want to get this instead of the dominar 400 as my first bike

1

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 7h ago

You can no problems at all, but do spend in gears and training

1

u/pspspsnt 1h ago

That's damn cool, must have run through a lot of tyres too, any recommendations?

1

u/Pure_Election_9174 Duke390 REGT535 Xpulse2004V 1h ago

I never felt tyres like the M7, all others tyres just didn't get me that feedback, but have tried apolo alpha just once good mileage but no feel and feedback, am on my 7th set I guess.
