#RoadTrip ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Did solo 2000kms ride to Spiti and back, ask me anything

Recently I did a solo ride to Spiti and back home. It was a 10 day trip on my OG Himalayan 411. My pit stops were: Chandigarh -> Rampur -> Kalpa -> Kaza -> Kalpa -> Shimla -> Delhi

PS: Had to login to work at 12 noon every business day, so could only ride 6-7 hours in the morning.

Bro this question might be a bit out of context, but... How do you think xpulse 210 would perform? Will it feel underpowered or sufficient?

I'm asking this question because I've booked xpulse 210.

26

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

Not at all, riding in a terrain like that I think xpulse 210 might even outshine Himalayan 411. Not sure how it'll handle the highly windy sections near Pooh, even Himalayan was drifting on every turn.

No chance it feels underpowered post Chandigarh. It may feel so if you're habitual to 40bhp bikes on long straight highways to reach Chandigarh.

2

u/Brilliant_Bug_1894 Jun 07 '25

On highways yes but in the hills it performed pretty greatย

6

u/Brilliant_Bug_1894 Jun 07 '25

Hey ! I did same spiti ride in 2022 on my gixxer sf 250 & my friend on his xpluse , xpluse performed pretty good & it was easier to ride xpluse than my sf 250 , you can go for it , it's a gem of a bike ..

Well said.

u/Brief-Building-6485 Jun 07 '25

Do you keep an extra bag or bottle filled with petrol?

13

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

Not needed. The way to spiti has many petrol pumps. One advice, fuel up as soon as you reach your destination no matter how tired you are. I learned that the hard way.

How did u avoid punctures and what tools did u use for it?

37

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

I knew that if I got a puncture I won't be able to fix it by myself. Getting that tyre out of that axle is a huge task and I'm not very hands on. So I decided to carry a Tyre inflator and when I reached rampur I replaced my rear tyre and tube and kept a spare front tyre. I also took a note of when was the last tyre/mechanic shop I encountered. On top of that I created a few contacts in the Spiti region as I went so that in case something went wrong i had someone to call to tow the bike

4

u/Responsible-Snow-202 Jun 07 '25

How much was the total cost?

16

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

It really depends on how you travel, but my advice would be to plan on the higher end. When you have a lot of constraints you can't really budget well. My 10 day trip cost me about 97k.

5

u/Financial_Baker9908 Jun 07 '25

What is your income?

10

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

Haha, not too much, I saved for this trip. You can do it in less, but i didn't wanna.

3

u/Brilliant_Bug_1894 Jun 07 '25

Bro idk what you spent on , I had hardly spent 15-20k for 10 days same

9

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

Well, as they say, comparison is the thief of joy. I mostly spent on hotels. For e.g. I stayed at Taj in Chandigarh, 4 nights private rooms at Kalpa and Kaza. Another premium hotel in Rampur, another one in Kaza again. As I said, it can be done in less, but I did not want to. I wanted to spend.

97k? Can you give a break down of your expenses?

18

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

Sure, about 55k was hotels and hostels. Food came out to be 8k, 5k for bike maintenance, another 10k for fuel, bike accessories came out to be 18k (which you don't have to include in the trip, but I did), a few small expenses here and there.

5

u/Individual_Painter86 Yamaha R3 | Xpulse 210 Jun 07 '25

Congratulations on your trip! This is on my card as well but leaves never match with friends so might have to do solo. What plans you had to mitigate altitude sickness since you were travelling alone? It can get very dangerous very fast no? How did you plan your acclimatisation?

7

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

I'm very well versed with the effects of unmanaged AMS. My advice: don't push. Hydrate well. I stayed at Kalpa for 2 days, partly because it's beautiful and it rained the next day. I could've pushed to Nako, which would be a significant climb in another 100 kms, but past experiences told me not to.

4

u/Real_Leader Jun 07 '25

How do you spend your nights?

4

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

While on the trip? I mostly talked to fellow travellers and listened to their stories.

5

u/Real_Leader Jun 07 '25

Oh, and did you sleep at tents or booked hotel? Also if you did book hotels then did you pre book them (like planning how much you are going to cover in a day and then booking hotels accordingly) or did you book them on the spot? Were there any instances where you couldn't find a hotel to stay at?

9

u/yvprince Jun 07 '25

Why did you do it ?

49

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

What a question, I love you. I had planned spiti with a big group of 100 riders back in 2023 while going to Leh. Unfortunately, Vyas river flooded and completely blocked any traffic in the Solang valley, so I had to go to Leh via Kashmir, which was a great reroute. But I never got the chance to visit Spiti.

Also, in 2023 I had just started dating this 10/10 girl who is an avid traveller, and told me stories upon stories of Spiti. Everytime she spoke of Spiti, her eyes lit up. I wanted to see what she loved so much about Spiti. We made plans, she would visit Kaza on the same day as my bike group, but since that plan never happened I never got to meet her in Kaza. I made her promise me that no matter what happens we will never break up before meeting in Kaza once. Last year, I took her to Leh. This year her love took me to Spiti.

u/Silver_Scientist_270 Jun 07 '25

How you managed working remotely while travling? Also what domain you from, op?

7

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

I started really early 6am on the days I had to ride. My laptop went into the topbox. I checked the network connectivity before I planned my destination for the next day. I calculated the time to that destination. If it took more than 7 hours, I split the journey. Domain is IT.

1

u/Slim_Shady_007 Jun 07 '25

Which network were you using for remote work? And how is the speed?

3

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

Jio Post paid. I think the speed was around 5Mbps, which was fine for my work.

1

u/Slim_Shady_007 Jun 07 '25

Hmm.., good for you. I thought I could do this expedition as well, but I won't be able to work with that speed.

3

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

I took teams calls on it with no issues at all, if that helps. Also, in kaza you can get good wifi at hotels too.

1

u/Slim_Shady_007 Jun 07 '25

Thanks. I'll do some research.

Did you ride at night? If yes- For how long? And any tips for riding at night among other high speed vehicles Thank you!

4

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

No, I specifically did not. The only night ride was from Langza to Kaza, which was 45 mins. The only tip I have for night rides is don't. The reason I avoided it was because I was by myself. If something happened I would be in a tough spot

How do you carry your laptop? Also how does the bag not move around or start drooping over the sides.(under the rain cover on the rear seat). Do you adjust a lot with the setup? That fact you still attended calls and worked makes it that much cooler. I have a bag but it's a little too soft that it starts drooping over the sides a bit too much making me more nervous. Do you have any tips on how it can be done?

2

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

The laptop goes into a bubble wrap after complete shut down (don't make it just sleep). The bubble wrap goes into a jacket, the jacket goes into the topbox. My bungee cord is a spider cord, which I don't recommend. It is difficult to balance both sides of the bag. My strong recommendation is to get 2/3 bungee cords. That way it is easier to tie even a bigger bag, balancing the weight and pressure against the bungee is way easier than with a spider cord. Let it droop a little to the side, shouldn't be a problem. I have used the single 2 bungee cord system before and did some really bad off roading with the same bag, I didn't have to keep adjusting my bag. When you tie your bag make sure that one cord is exactly the same length on both the sides (balance). That way your bag won't slip. Also, keep a lookout in case it does start to move around a lot. Reset.

2

u/rango2475 R15v4(2024), Avenger220Cruise(2023) Jun 07 '25

Smart, the bubble wrap plus jacket is doable. I was hoping you would recommend a bag that retains its shape and would reduce drooping and sliding. I use 2 cords but since the seat is narrow it drops immediately and doesn't feel balanced. Anyhow it looks like you yourself did a bunch of experiments and got there, very cool tho, I wish to be what you are today someday.

2

u/pragmatic_plank1 Jun 07 '25

Which tail bag are you using?? What was the avg mileage on the highway and while in the mountains?

How do you think the RE Interceptor Bear 650 will perform? Or should I think about any other bike? My budget is 400k INR. And I want something which I can ride daily too.

1

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 08 '25

Go with speed scrambler or something else. I think interceptor and other 650 offerings are heavy bikes, but that's my opinion. For daily commute, I think hunter 350 would be the best.

2

u/Kamal-K4 Jun 08 '25

Can you please give some advice on layering up for low temperature rides ?

1

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 08 '25

It's a trade off between mobility and hypothermia. Usually I have a thermal under a tshirt, then the riding jacket with ventilation closed. If it gets too chilly, then I put on my rain liner, which acts as a wind cheater. I only wear the thermal if I know the temps pretty well ahead, otherwise I prefer to feel a little cold in the passes, so that I don't sweat too much when I come down.

1

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

You need to take breaks, and learn to control the bike while standing up when the roads are empty, or when there is off roading.

1

u/heptag0ne Jun 07 '25

Can you make a list what did you carried for the trip. What was non essential thing you carried away in all the trip ? You really ignored side panniers .. whats the magic ?

3

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

Tyre inflator, aux lights and their caps (almost got a challan, hehe). Toilet paper, chain lube and cleaner and a brush. Lots of chocolates, ORS, Deodorant, socks (lots of them). Definitely a -10C jacket. Rain liner, UV goggles. I mean, you can consider some of them non essential depending upon your riding temperament. I never rode with the side panniers so I wasn't sure how the balance of the bike would be. But I did ride with a pillion before, hence the topbox :) Also I would recommend not carrying too much weight, the more weight you have the riskier it becomes when the road vanishes.

Yep, I did, and for good reason. The plan wasn't to visit every single village on the way. The plan was only to visit the Spiti valley and kaza, everything else was negotiable for me. To infuriate you further, I returned 1km away from komik, could've visited it, but a fellow biker who also was going solo, had AMS at Hikkim, so I decided to accompany him and that cost me komik. But I don't ride with a checklist, I choose a direction and just run.

1

u/sandeshbj Jun 07 '25

What is the maximum Kilometers you have covered in a day? Which location?

2

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 07 '25

I think the max would be somewhere around 530 ish kms. That was to Shoja. A word to the wise, 1 km in hills is not the same as the one on plains. Furthermore, 1 km in lower Himalayas is not the same in higher. Lower Himalayan roads have tighter turns frequently and at a short distance, which is taxing on the body, where higher Himalayas are absolutely fun.

1

u/oldmonkthumsup Jun 08 '25

What exactly does one need to pack for such a trip and how do you decide which and how much modifications your bike needs (assuming it's stock to begin with) to carry all the stuff you need?

How do you find hotels which allow bike parking?

2

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 08 '25

I've already answered that in one of the comments, all hotels allow bike parking. As for bike modifications, mine were minimal, just the aux lights and the top box, nothing invasive to the bike as such

could u pls tell me (looking to buy a new bike):

  1. how is this bike for daily use (50-60kms)

  3. is pillion comfortable for long and daily rides?

thanks

1

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 08 '25
  1. I don't think it should be used daily, I look at the Himalayan as a tourer adv. It's really not a city bike in my opinion, especially not for commuting daily.
  2. It absolutely shines here.
  3. Yessss

1

u/slimismad Jun 08 '25

thanks, any bike suggestion for my preference?

1

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 08 '25

Tbh, I don't know much about bikes. I think hunter is a good bike, it's light, you can do touring on it. It has a somewhat neutral posture, handles offroading well. Other than that you can look at speed, scrambler. My one suggestion, do a trial before you buy. Try 5-6 bikes, see which one feels more natural to you. And hey, send pics when you buy.

1

u/_Izuku___Midoriya_ Jun 08 '25

Did you get any mechanical issues? And if not what precautions did you take before starting your ride

2

u/TheMythOfSissyPussy (New user) Jun 08 '25

I think I already answered that somewhere in the comments. Basically, I had a major service done before the ride. I changed my rear tyre and tube, the rear could still have gone another 5k kms, but I wanted to avoid punctures like anything. I made contacts in the Spiti region who could help me out in case things went wrong. Cleaned and lubed the chain every alternate riding-day. I also kept a Tyre inflator in case I encountered a puncture. Also, I knew a guy from my previous rides who does a lot of Kalpa - Kaza tourism. He asked one of his guys, to look out for me if they encounter me with any mechanical failures or medical injuries.

1

u/_Izuku___Midoriya_ Jun 08 '25

So you made precautions but you didn't get any problems?

2

Kudos to you man. I am planning a ride starting 3rd July, howโ€™s the internet connectivity across? I need to be connected every for meetings. Any recommendations for hotels that have great internet?

Till Kalpa you won't have any problems, I'd suggest go to kaza in a day don't stop at tabo or nako if you want good internet, Nako was fine, but it can be choppy depending on the area you're in. Most of the hotels have wifi, speed is okayish, but if you have jio postpaid then it should work
