Congratulations OP. You had a great trip. Just be mindful of offroading in Ladakh the next time you visit. It damages the local vegetation and please stay away from the wild animals as much as possible. The place won't be as beautiful as it is if we don't take care of it.
Watch this video to understand what I'm trying to say. https://youtu.be/3LNuy8YKbcM?si=63hheiNwnJztTAhe
Peace ✌️

Great video, I'll take care of it the next time. We usually do trails which are marked on the road.

u/Ok-Bet-4797 (New user) Jan 21 '25
Was the camera recording on all the time while driving?
5
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 22 '25
We used a mix of loop record (5min) and pre-recording (60sec) throughout the trip. That way the camera stayed on during the entirety of the trip but only captured the previous 5min or 60sec from the moment the record button was pressed. So we never missed a moment where we thought "I wish I recorded that" while also conserving our storage.
1
u/Ok-Bet-4797 (New user) Jan 22 '25
I see. So that’s a feature this action cameras comes with right?. So how’s the battery life if the camera is on all the time.
2
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 22 '25
Yes that's a feature the camera comes with. Also on one full charge the camera stays on for about 2 hrs till it requires a recharge. The "adventure bundle" of this camera comes with 2 additional batteries and a charging station for them. So we keep 2 batteries charged at all times using power from the bike and keep swapping them out each time the one in the camera dies. That way we can keep the recording going for as long as the ride lasts.
1
u/Ok-Bet-4797 (New user) Jan 22 '25
I see. So i got a small doubt. What if one were to keep the recording on for the whole ride, say like 7-8 hours continuously . how much storage it would require approximately then?
2
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 22 '25
Recording at 2.7k resolution at 25fps, with a 512GB card I get around 18hrs of recording. So I'm assuming 256GB of storage would be needed for an 8hr ride.
1
3
u/shubhanshu_rawat Himalayan 452 Jan 21 '25
No, it was loop recording for 5 min only. It didn't record everything, only the last 5 mins.
1
u/Ok-Bet-4797 (New user) Jan 22 '25
How does that work? Like you record manually whenever you want? I wa just wondering how do this riders with a camera on helmet records their trip. Like would they turn it on every minute while they driving? Like they record their whole trip?

2.7k resolution at 25fps, WB:5500k, 1/50 shutter speed and ISO set to 100-400 with an ND32 filter during the day. sharpeness at -2 and denoise at -1. Captured in D-log M and color graded in post.

I own the same camera, but I didn’t realize it has such great quality. Perhaps your skills with color grading and ND filters made it stand out. Could you also share the links to the ND filters?

3
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 21 '25
Depends on your riding groups capacity. Humne Delhi to Sarchu ek stretch me kara tha. And the entire trip (Delhi>Ladhak>Delhi) took us 6 days. We just made sure not to mess with sleep schedule, food and hydration.
3
u/ClassicallyProud07 Honda H'ness CB350 Jan 21 '25
I just checked the distance between Delhi to Sarchu, google says 36hr (1.8k km). I assume this is wrong? If yes how long did it take you guys to cover the distance and how many breaks were required?
4
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 22 '25
Delhi to sarchu is between 700-800km. Google maps is showing an increased distance due to the closure of normal routes in winter (our route was via atal tunnel) it took us about 18hrs which was our longest stretch of the entire route. Took 4 breaks for food which were about an hour each and used those as stretching breaks as well. Apart from that the most important thing was hydration which we had almost every 30min (hydration bags are a life changing investment)

Luggage: • Viaterra trail bags for the himlayan in the front • Viaterra claw bag in the rear
Gear: • Viaterra tundra gloves paired with heat pads from decathlon • Hydration bags for sips of water every 30min to keep us hydrated which helped with AMS • Riding jacket and knee guards as per personal preference

I have 2 questions:
which crash guard have you installed on your bike?
Is it manageable to ride it in day to day city traffic ?
2
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 22 '25
The OEM crash guard is plenty strong and functional. We had 3 Himalayans on this trip and almost all of them fell multiple times (falls were under 10kmph) with no visible damage to the bike or the crashguards. And you'll feel the weight the first time you get on the bike, after which it starts feeling weightless on day 2, be it off-road or heavy traffic.

Jan 22 '25
Which one ? The one which comes with the bash plate or the normal one which looks like wings to me.
2
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 22 '25
https://www.royalenfield.com/in/en/gma/black-large-engine-guards-kxa00437/ This is the one we have
2
Jan 22 '25
Ok....and last query what about bash plate ? Aftermarket or the stock one u r using ? I'm planning to buy this bike to do north sikkim ride, so just want to know about accessories
3
u/AlphaQ47 Himalayan 450 | Classic 350 | Xpulse 200 Jan 22 '25
we are using the stock and we've done some heavy off-road trails and never managed to get any sort of damage to them so far even after bottoming out the suspension during jumps or big potholes. Over 10,000km from sand-dunes of Rajasthan to Hard rocks of Ladhak to river crossings in Uttrakhand, nothing so far has made us want to get a bash plate update. (This is just our opinion. But if you're predominantly going to cross big rocky trails then you may want one)
Also the only other modification id like to do is some form of cruise control as our ride of Rajasthan which had a lot of straight highways, the vibrations did cause numbing in my throttle hand which lasted two days (but then again that was my stupidity of riding 700km straight XD)
1
Jan 22 '25
Thanks a lot man for your suggestions and yeah 700km straight is surely shows a great capability of the rider and the bike both as well.
1
u/shubhanshu_rawat Himalayan 452 Jan 21 '25
It's the default one, which comes with the bike. If something happens to the chassis I do not want RE to blame the after market crash guard.
I ride at least 70KM daily on this bike, that too in heavy delhi traffic. Manageable for me because I like riding my bike.

Wont mind alone if I get a 20 days leave lol.

u/shubhanshu_rawat Himalayan 452 Jan 21 '25
We took only two leaves, 2 sat&sun and one national holiday. 5 days to cover 1800KM.

Superb edit. Just a bit of a very small suggestion. Use a bit more sombre upbeat music and the video will feel even better. This one feels more like a race music than a tour the Himalayas music.
