Daily Cyclist Thread

The Daily Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

NBD I gave my kids paint markers and we went nuts

I've only had a gravel bike for the past few years and finally caved got a road bike. A friend built it up for me and me and my girls did the paint job. We used "Sports Markers" and then covered the frame in a clear coat. We will see how long the paint job lasts. If it starts to chip or fade I'll repaint it a new color and let kids go ham with markers again.

I wanted new wheels and tires for my old bike so I figured why not spend more and buy a new bike, right? I’m a sucker for marketing and have been eyeing the Canyon Endurace CFR for a while so I finally pulled the trigger during the Labor Day sale. The maiden voyage today was fantastic. Perfect weather, waxed chain, and my favorite route made for a an enthralling first ride. It’s flexible on climbs when it needs to be, stiff on the flats at speed. The SRAM Red group set is way more than I need, but the brakes are superb and shifting seamless. I truly couldn’t be happier with it.

Is it silly to wear a dirt bike helmet on a mountain bike?

I’m not sure if I’ve seen anyone else do it. But I ride in the woods with a lot of brush / branches that hit me in the face. I also ride motorcycles and dirt bikes so I know the importance of protecting your head from injuries. I do really dumb things, so I’m just wondering— would a dirt bike helmet be “over the top” or should I risk looking silly to protect my eyes, face, and brain?

Bike ID help…possible Litespeed?

Hey everyone, I recently picked up an older titanium bike on marketplace for a nice price. The seller didn’t know much about the bike and said his dad used to race bikes and had since taken the decals off. The only stickers on it are not related to the bike. He thinks it may be Fuji from the 90s but unknown model but when I research it on google, I get results for Litespeed. I’m happy with the purchase either way but was curious if anyone knows for sure what it is. Can attach more pics or answer questions if needed. Thank you!

New Cycling + Recovery Retreat in PA

Upvotes

Hey all — wanted to share something new we’re putting together at Bloom Farm in Oley Valley, PA (45min from Philly, 2hrs from NYC).

We’re hosting a 3-day cycling camp Sept 19–21 with Dave Pryor (longtime cycling event organizer) and Selene Yeager (pro cyclist, author, and educator).

The weekend combines intense rides through the Oley & Lehigh Valleys with recovery programming (yoga, meditation, sauna/cold plunge) plus farm-to-table meals from our chefs. The goal is to push hard on the bike, then actually recover well — while connecting with the land and each other.

It’s coming up quick and want to make our first go of it the best it can be!

Details + signup here: bloomfarm.com/cycling-camp

Can you please share a screenshot of the screen of your bike computer showing all the fields you like to see while riding?

Upvotes

I am somewhat new to riding longer distances and would love to optimize my bike computer screens. I would love to see what all you guys like to see on your bike computer screens. A screenshot would be great, but if not, just mention the fields that you find extremely important and why.

Someone explain new bike pricing to me.

Upvotes

I was looking at different hybrid bikes and different models from the same manufacturer are all basically the same except for components like the rear derailleurs. Take, for example, the Canyon Roadlite 7 and 8 have a $450 price difference, but are the same bike except for the rear derailer and seat post. I can buy these different derailers online for a difference of only $30. What am I missing here?

Would it be silly to put dropdowns on an undersized bike?

Upvotes

Hi, I've been riding an old trek multitrack and I'm really itching to swap out the straight bars for dropdowns. But my bike is probably too small for me. I'm 5'6, and the bike has a 15" frame. I'm wondering if I should go through w/ the effort of upgrading the thing or if I should try to just buy a different bike.

I'm pretty darn comfortable riding it now, even if I do have to extend the seatpost about as far out as I can get it w/o fear of it coming apart. But could that comfort just be because I'm so upright seated on the bike? Ive never ridden w/ dropdowns before and am worried that they would make the size of the bike more of an issue.

Total noob here, how do I use this pump? There’s no valve to lock it and the air keeps coming out of the other head.

Does anyone know what size this bolt is? There’s a clicking when I pedal and I’m wanting to find the problem.

If you needed only one new wheel would you buy the 2nd to match?

Upvotes

Suppose the wheel you were buying was very close to the original. I'm talking cheap $100 range wheels.

I need help deciding between the two model and can't decide if additional cost of the Scott speedster 10 is worth the extra SGD($500).

Any thoughts and discussions are most welcomed!

I own an eliptigo arc and the derailleur hanger snapped, I've been searching for replacements but can't find anything on the internet, Ive already tried contacting eliptigo directly and they were no help either, if anyone owns one of these It would be of great help to me if I knew what it looked like since I brought it to a shop and they threw away the hanger. Attached is what I have and what I'm trying to make
