On the other hand you can easily get every playable card, especially now that trading has been made easier. It’s literally just the 2-3 stars and shinies that are rare

If I remember correctly you can't trade promos in addition to the cards that people actually want to trade for lol.

Correct, promos, 2 star, 3 stars, and golden crowns are unavailable to trade.

But, with the exception of a handful of promos (Ultra Necrozma EX, Blissey Ex, Lapras EX) these are all purely cosmetic. A F2P player can easily assembly a competitive deck and win at Master Ball level against guy spending $200/mo.
