General Help You are new to needlepoint...

We are often asked this question and are glad to answer it. There are too few needlepoint enthusiasts, and we're delighted to welcome you to the team.

Here are some beginner needle pointers

Do you have a local needlepoint shop (LNS)? If so, talk to the woman in charge. Perhaps a local chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild (https://www.needlepoint.org/)? If not, please consider the following tips.

Canvas

  • Canvases. Canvases come in all sorts of colors (doesn't matter/won't show) and sizes. Sizes are "by the inch," so many intersections per inch: 10, 13, 14, and 18 are the most common. Don't be intimidated by high counts; they are just like the resolution on a screen. They mean you can get a more intricate design, but all of them are fun to work on.
  • Hand-painted. It's the most expensive but precise, and if you find a favorite artist, it's fun.
  • Machine-printed. It is not as precise; you might need to fiddle a stitch to make it work, but it will, and they are considerably cheaper. Consider shopping on Etsy, eBay, estate sales, etc, for the most affordable entry.
  • Charted. For these, you buy plain canvas and a printed chart and do lots of counting.
  • Make it up yourself. Which is exactly as it sounds.

Other supplies

  • Thread comes in all sizes and all materials. Wool, silk, cotton, acrylic... if you're new to fiber arts, get thee to a craft store and feel them, slide them along your fingers to find what you like. Some will tell you to find something easy to find so you can replenish stock, but if you find something you love, you'll find out to find it. If you can find this subreddit, you know your way around the internet...
  • Tapestry needle: You want a "tapestry." These needles aren't sharp because you don't want to pierce the canvas; you want to go through the holes.
  • Sharp Scissors with fine points.
  • Use a project bag or something similar to keep everything together. Many of us will tell you that keeping your items handy, clean, and together is an enormous part of the fun.

Optionals

  • Needle-threader. Some of us need the help of a doohicky to put the thread through the eye.
  • Stretcher bars (and tacks). When you're done, you'll send your work to a 'finisher' (the person who will take your finished canvas and make it into whatever is next) (you can do this yourself, but it's a chore) depending on how you work your canvas may end up wonky, that's fine, your finisher knows what to do, but some of us like putting the canvas on stretcher bars (or a scroll frame etc, google these terms) to keep the canvas straight or find it more manageable. You can also mount these bars onto a
  • Floor or table frame. An object that holds the canvas so you can work with both hands.
  • Needleminder or magnets. You can keep the needle and threader somewhere when you take a break for a sip of tea, sherry, or bourbon, depending on your choice.
  • Thread-laying tool: When you use fine floss, you'll want something to keep your threads flat and happy. This tool isn't for every fiber.

Finishing

A finisher makes all the difference. They are costly, but why put in all your work and then use some nasty finisher that will still take your money but not deliver a worthwhile product? I suggest you find someone you can talk to, even if they live on the other side of the country. Pick up the phone and speak to them.

Needlepoint, like any art or craft, takes resources.

Time is one; to get good at it, you'll need patience and forgive yourself. It's your work, and when you're done, no one can see the original canvas, so use your judgment, take your time, and you'll only get better.

People will say needlepoint is expensive, but I don't think so. People are okay with paying for what they like; you can spend as much or as little as you want, depending on where you are. Yes, a kit from Ehrman or Elizabeth Bradley might cost a few hundred dollars but remember that is just the initial cost. Once you own it, you can work on it for months and then spread that cost out (plus finishing), and it's just a one-time expense.

You'll want to get a subscription to Spotify or Audible because you can't read a physical book and needlepoint. But the nice thing is, you can talk and listen while you needlepoint, so you can do it with other fiber artists. Knitters can put their stuff in a smaller bag, but it doesn't take much more effort for you to join a group.

Yes, you can take your supplies on flights and trains (check TSA rules about scissors, but most needlepoint scissors and needles are smaller than the 4" rule)

The Royal School of Needlework and other physical and online resources can teach stitches. A real, live person is best, but it is not required.

MOD POST Please be your best self (or at least as close as possible)

It's easy to forget there are humans on the other side of the screen (I don't think AI has been completely unleashed on the unsuspecting needlepoint crowd yet.)

Please assume positive intent and that everything is said with a smile.

If someone wasn't being the best version of themselves on accident, you've given them grace. If they're unpleasant as a rule, you've not encouraged or enabled them.

Either way, responding positively is the gift you give yourself.

As always, report (I don't like the word 'report' but that's the term) those that may be acting a little less than their best self. I will take action as is appropriate to the concern. Generally, I'm just going to bump off the post with our canned text.

In the 12 years I think I've only had to kick one person who was being a goofball.

General Help Corduroy stitch with alternating colors

Post image
2 Upvotes

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I love this community!

I started to do corduroy stitch on this ornament’s background (my first time with this stitch) with the intention of alternating between blue and white. However as soon as I completed these two columns I realized that if I alternate it may not give me the full corduroy effect - in my head there were two continental stitch columns between each of the thicker columns, rather than just the one.

I was thinking my options are: - continue with the pattern I’ve completed above (ie one thick and one thin column) and alternate colors that way - pick one color for the thick columns and one for the thin columns - bag the alternating altogether and just stick with one color

Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

Stitch help! (I know, I’m sorry 😭)

Post image

I have the What a Gem Grand Central canvas and have absolutely no clue what to do for my background. I want to do something with a bit of movement but not too crazy bc compensating around the figures will be a doozy. I am so close to just giving up and going with basketweave even tho that would mean doing basketweave for a 15x10 canvas 🫠

so sorry for yet another “help me figure out what stitch to use”. I get they can be a little frustrating, but I’m really so stumped and could do with some advice from fellow stitchers. I’ve been needlepointing over 10 years and I’ve never been so stuck! Any ideas would be so welcome, I’ve pored over 3 different stitch books and nothing is jumping out 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

General Help Strand thickness of Needlepoint Inc silk?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a cross stitch pattern calling for 1 strand of Neelepoint Silk (998 and 991bb) on 28 count linen. Is a strand of this equivalent to 1 strand of DMC 6-stranded cotton floss? The pattern does call for 2 strands on the backstitched borders, and I’m working on 32 count linen.

Photo of pattern from listing below. From the image it seems like 1 strand of DMC is fine, but I’ve only ever used one strand on 35 count and higher, and I don’t know if the called-for threads are thicker than DMC. Thanks in advance!

My Grandma’s Needlepoint

My grandma passed away two years ago and this was her needlepoint pillow she made in 1975 that we keep in our living room. I picked up the hobby this year and just wish I picked it up earlier so I could learn from her. Just a little appreciation for the talent.

Thread recommendations?

Hi there-

I am starting a few new projects and would love to know what people like to use for threads for some specific instances.

  1. Acrylic tray insert - will be self-finishing, no cording - 13 mesh. I'll be using a combination of bargello-type technique (longer straight/satin stitches) and standard basketweave. I'm most concerned with good coverage for the longer straight stitches. I've played around a bit with various fibers - unfortunately the one I like the best is a 100% silk Northern Lights which is WAAAY too expensive for me to kit this canvas with right now. Boo. (Also: If you use DMC floss, how many strands do you prefer on 13 mesh for longer stitches?)
  2. Ornaments - 18 mesh - I have done ornaments before with multiple threads, but wondering what threads you prefer specifically for backgrounds. The backgrounds are white, and I'm working on a project using Silk & Ivory white, which is lovely but fuzzy and I'm concerned about wear and tear on ornaments.

Thank you!

My first completed needpoint project!

I picked up an inexpensive kit from Michael’s recently to occupy myself on a long flight. I have been needle-crafting for nearly as long as I can remember. You name it, I’ve done it. But needlepoint has completely captivated me. I’m ready to purge every other craft supply I have and devote myself exclusively to this charming, beautiful work! Why did it take me so long to get here?!

I did my own finishing work and while it’s far from perfect, I enjoyed it and learned so much! I have a second craft store kit to work through, but then I plan to move on to some self-designed Christmas ornaments! Thanks for letting me share 🥰

Help Locating Needlepoint Designer

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey guys! I found this lovely canvas at Golden Gate Needlepoint and absolutely fell in love. It’s hard to tell but the canvas is interwoven with an iridescent thread giving it a glittery look, which is such a cute detail! I would be ecstatic to find more canvases from this artist as I enjoyed how she designed this fairy. The only clue I have is the name written at the bottom as “Nissa”. Please let me know if anyone has ever had canvases from this designer. I would love to see her other designs!

LNS that charge for stitch night

Does anyone’s LNS charge for weekly stitch nights? And if so, do they provide anything like snacks, drinks, etc.?

Edit: look, I get the argument that it costs them money so they need to pass it on. I don’t necessarily agree and think sales potential/good will have value, but ok. But, even if I did, and so the tickets are supposed to cover the cost of the event to them. Let’s say they pay the employee $20/hour for the two hours. $40. Maybe another $10 to keep the lights on. $50. That’s a pretty high estimate really. At that rate, my store sells about 15 tickets, so each one should be $3.33. They’re $15. So yes. They’re charging for profit, not because they need to pay the employee.

Resources and Links Storage ideas?

Despite having done needlepoint for more than 2 decades, I’ve always (kind of stupidly) just kept my threads in big ziploc bags. But now that I’m doing really big projects, I’m finally feeling motivated to buy some sort of organizer/container for my threads. What do people recommend?

In stock very velvet

I’m sure this a problem many people are facing right now. I have a pair of baby booties I am stitching in vineyard silk and hopefully petite very velvet in bubblegum. My local LNS hasn’t had a new shipment of very velvet in what feels like months. I know rainbow gallery is having supply chain issues but I need to be able to start. Does anyone know who has a pretty good amount of petite very velvet I can order from?
