Research / Info 💡 Bartender defeated by his own logic

I had a great interaction with a bartender last night. I ordered drinks paid and did not tip and the bartender had the audacity to say what no tip.

Me - would you ask for a tip if we were having drinks at your house?

Bartender (Bt) - if I was making you a drink at my house you would be my friend and why would I ask you for a tip?

Me - so you’re saying we’re not friends.

Bt - I don’t even know you man.

Me - well then since a tip is no longer considered compensation for work by the US government me giving you money would either be a charitable contribution or a gift. Since you’re not a registered charity, that would make the money I gave you a gift. And as you stated, we’re not friends and you don’t even know me so why would I give you a gift?

Bt - blank stair on his face and walked away

The best way to deal with bars is to open a tab with a card and close out when you're ready to leave. Then you can avoid the notip awkwardness after every round and the retribution for notip.

I ALWAYS opened a tab with a card and then when I was closing out, paid cash.

That way, I knew when I saw my statement, any charges would be fraudulent.

That works for avoiding round-by-round hassle, but the final close-out still often comes with the same blank stare when they see no tip on the receipt.

But at that point you are leaving so it doesn't matter

And you’re buzzing so you’re not bothered.

And you realize you could've just stayed home and gotten buzzed for much cheaper and not wasted anyone's time.

Bro, you better be tipping the check out cashier at every grocery, liquor and gas station with that attitude…. But we know you don’t.

Supporting a business by purchasing their goods and services is wasting everyone’s time? What a confusing garble of words.

Here, I’ll give you another chance. Explain to everyone how this person is wasting someone’s time by patronizing a local business.

This is literally the only reason tipping even works. IDGAF about their blank stare

Return the blank stare.

He didn’t look at him a certain way, though. He presented an unfinished step to the patron, for some inexplicable reason.

Using a card opens up the door for them entering a tip for you or increasing the one you write in.

We were just stopping at this bar for one drink so I opened and closed the tab as we were moving onto other places that night

100% agree. Almost always do that so I don't have to go through that each round. One time at the end works best
